Went on a road trip today to pick up a split, got about 80ks short of the destination and the car i was in died, spent 3 hours waiting for towy, $600 later, back home, no split...in the pouring rain as well, what a waste of the day...
Anyone had similar stories?

Ohhh no!
I drove down from Sydney to Melbourne once with friend in a kombi...
We lost a fuel cap, eventually found it flattened.
We fused the ignition and had to hotwire it.
We got stopped on the side of the road and had to wait for a herd of 400 cattle to cross (yes, on the Hume Hwy).
We completely shattered the windscreen and had to drive from Tarcutta to Wagga without one (the roadside O'Brien was awol). It was after 5 pm, so we got charged extra.
After dark, we discovered that the headlights and wipers had also fused so we hotwired them too (under a spotlight in a closed servo).
We finally got to Albury at 10:30... 12 hours after leaving Sydney. I took over the driving in Albury, and drove straight through to Melbourne in 2 1/2 hours. 🙂 (I suspect more went wrong, but that was the most memorable bits)
Sorry to hear about your bad trip Bruce.
Anybody got some more?

it was nut man...
Dude, i want your nuts, where are they? I paid $30
frenzix ·
Yes yes, It was my range rover ... and my $600 . the gas conversion shat itself basically. NRMA are nutmunchers. We were picking up a 60 split single cab i bought.

lol i had a little experience today
coming home from morisset (near newcastle) after seeing frenzal rhomb, i caught the 5 30 train back to campbelltown; a 4 hour trip in itself.
when we got to wyong station we heard these messages come across, each with a 20 minute break in between...
'we will be expecting short delays'
'due to adverse weather we will be delayed'
'we are unsure of track safety, please prepare for extended delays'
lightning had struck the tracks and started fires outside gosford, cutting electricity between wyong and hornsby. 1.5 hours later the busses arrived. 20 mins later i catch the last bus (whatever happened to women and children first?). almost an hour later i get to hornsby statin, where i wait for a train for 15 minutes. when i get to central i have to tranfer to the c town line, where im waiting another 20 minutes. when i get on the train its another 1.5 hours and im at campbelltown, only to drive the next 20 minutes home.
arrgh!

I remember driving into Carnavon Gorge Qld early evening n a kanga jumped out in from of us...smashed the headlights n jumped away........had to crawl into the gorge slowly without lights....luckily now traffic n a dirt road into the gorge back then (haven't been back for years...but back twice since the lights got busted...luv d place..or did then)
Last time we went in it rained and the bull dust turned into deep mud......driving a Datson 1600 (always then...rugged old thing n easy to fix).....2 kids and a trailor full of camping gear for two months camping holiday...it was fun...almost got there but the mud got worse n a 4wd took the trailor in...n we skidded our way in laying branches to get grip .....it was dry on the trip out
They r the best trips :thumb

drove to nambucca a few years ago with a couple of larikins from here, from melbourne to valla dub show
swapping the batteries from the beetle to the kombi cos the beetles regulator was toast !
then met up with a certain blown 2ltr kombi with more stuff in it than a big rig and it was towing a fast back race car.
the blown 2 ltr then decided to blow its heads !
kombi limped to valla and the kombi's engine was rebuilt on our camp site by all and any (anybody remember this hehehe 🙂 )
on the way home the kombi again died and left for dead...........till a tow was arranged........
othr kombi we were tavelling with from which we were recharging the beetles dead battery up to valla had a generator failure so we then were swapping the batteries again ! all the way home !
not to mention the carbie problems we had going up there b4 we even left melbourne, rebuilding a dizzy at valla, the smell of the beetle in the morning (PHEW!)
HI TO ALL INVOLVED !
I WISH WE HAD OF TAKEN A VIDEO CAMERA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

haha I remember that one (reading about it on here that is). I kept thinking, well, thats it, it cant get any worse. And it just kept on getting worse.
I would have lost my cool and left the kombi !
SKEWtYpe3 ·
yeah it was a crack up (coz none of the cars were mine)
u were there yeah? came later with a panel camper?
cheers !

How about driving through little english country lanes going across from east coast of Kent to Brighton in Sussex when the accelerator cable broke at the carb so i bodged it together with insulated wire and carried on my merry way. Well to cut a long story short the wire stretches so you have less and less pedal travel,by the time I could find somewhere that I could pull off the road to sort it out (read here- use more wire) I had acquired a queue of traffic behind me about a mile long!
frenzix ·
safely got the single cab off the back of the car trailer with the help of a strong chain and a nice tree nearby
ancientbugger ·
Had the clutch cable go in the buggy in Brisbane and replaced it like that but used washing line-you know the thick metal stuff for the Hills hoist, clamps at both ends just to get me through for a while etc. Well it lasted 9 years! I only replaced it about 4 years ago and done the same again-well you can't argue with 9 years!

Every time that orange P.O.S leaves the driveway it turns into a memorable road trip for all the wrong reasons. Needs to be burnt to exorcise the demons.
I want my old one back.

Road trip to Gold Coast from Sydney with wife and dog. Wife's first trip to QLD and boy was she excited.
Stop at Coffs Harbour for the night at brother's place. Bit twice by angry redback spider. Spend first night of holiday in Intensive Care at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital. Wife says while doctors fussing with me, "I'm going to QLD tomorrow if you are out of here or not!"

been a few
one year was going to sydney over easter, luckily a few of us were heading down. just south of valla, put my foot down out of a corner and nothing... snapped a cable at 6pm on the thurs before easter. the kombi didn't have a spare. made a few phone calls, and luckily one of the guys was just having a beer at the pells work shop ....
perfect timing😀

After spending 3 weeks on Moreton island there was a mixup with barge booking so I had to wait 2 days till they could take me. My mates had already taken the tent and all the food and beer back on the 16foot boat we had. I was parked near the garage at Bulwer during a rainstorm trying to get comfortable. Moved the seat back to stretch out and fell asleep. Woke up choking on acrid smoke from behind my seat. The seat slides had cut through the ammeter cables and set alight to the fibreglass that I had coated the floor in. I ran to the house behind the garage grabbed a bucket at the open door on the way in, ran past 4 people sitting at their kitchen table eating dinner and started filling the bucket from the kitchen tap. All I could say to them before I got 3 inches of water in the bucket was "I got a fire" then ran back to the Baja and put the fire out and ripped out the cabling.
At first they must have thought I was a lunatic. They ended up inviting me to share dinner with them that night.
