C'mon. 68Auto bug I know you're itching to show yours!
68AutoBug ·
It good to be asked...
I still haven't finished the other 2 gauge padded panel yet...
something to do tomorrow....
There are some others I have seen at Valla & the nationals...
Compared to theirs, mine was easy to do....

Oasis ·

A lot of work hand cutting and filing the 3 mm ally plate to get the correct curve. held on by countersunk stainless hex screws. I was going to continue the plate to the door trims but got cold feet due to the amount of work. I'm just about sick of hand making alluminium bits for this car.
Oasis I'd love a speedo to match the guages but I can't have the kids go without food for that long.
Those of you with Tachos to the left of your stock speedo, can you actually see them while your driving?
I was going to put one there but can see it past my hand on the Formuling steering wheel (13.5" I think?) especially if it was in the heat of the action.
Cheers

smoothed and remounted to see both...
Jeza ·
Nice
Thanks twoguns.
It is similar to what I was thinking of doing. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to re mount the stock speedo without welding the mounting tabs back in.
I'm thinking of cutting off the tabs and pushing it into some aluminium sheet (the mirror image of the glovebox door), securing it in place with some big hose clamps and then screw that to the dash.
Any thoughts?
Cheers

I don't have kids so I suppose I'll have to use all my spare money on the speedo:P

Safer than toggle switches to. In NZ toggles are a no go, except down the centre column ie where modern radios sit.
The reason (as if authorities need one!) if you come into contact with the dash in an accident, toggles have a habit of stabing you!
Just food for thought.
Illuminated rockers you can see in an instant when they're on.
Cheers

Yeah, but only if I can find a good enough replacement set from a 914, or a cheaper 911 set. I need oil pressure and temp, speedo and fuel guages. I need more black in my car as it looks a bit 1980s for me...
ruckus ·
hey anth how do you reckon you'll go with visibility with that setup?
Anthiron ·
forgot fuel guage and cigarette lighter.
as for visability.....im hoping a 14 inch steering wheel will sort of go inbetween the 2 oil guages and the tacho and fuel guage on one side and just outside the amps and volts guages on the other side....with my current 13 inch steering wheel it would be a no go but 14 inch should be just right im hoping. the backing will be made from alloy checker plate..
i currently have my tacho mounted under the dash to the right of the steering wheel at the very end of the dash and can see it well........would have been better on top of dash but hard to make a mount for it and its technically illegal..

What is everyone running that they need so many extra switches for?
Anthiron ·
ill have that i know of so far:
.headlights
.dimmer switch
.wipers
.3 sets of spotties (3 switches)
.1 set of these will have high and low beam (buggie lights) so another dimmer switch
.rear spottie
.small reverse light
.isolator switch for my stereo
.electric fuel pump
.ignition isolator switch (theft precaution)
umm thats all i can think of right now.....theres probobly more........and yes i will have a dual battery set up with an alternater...........lots of lights :thumb
GL1972 ·
+ demister fans + washer pump + hazzard lights
+ nitrous.
The_Bronze. ·
Mussn't forget the nitrous.
Why - Of course. Goes without saying.
I had my dash worked out but the wife must have felt it wasn't to be and so formatted the computer with my wiring diagram and everything. About 5 hours work in schematics and to size plotting.
I have a 13 inch steering wheel and can't see a thing on my dash. All my warning lights run a buzzer in circuit (80db) and I rely on the GPS for road trips to give me an accurate speed as converting the MPH to KPH and then work the tyre size ratios won't be a good enough excuse for Mr. Plod I reckon. The whole car screams - "book me, I dare ya!"
I hope to have a fuse bank set up on the inside of the car where the stereo would normally go. The stereo will be replaced into the glove box or I have just picked up a cheap laptop which I can sinc with the GPS for navigation and redlight, camera and speed zone warnings displayed verbally and on screen.
For those that are interested it takes a little bit of setting up but can happen through running a program called Oziexplorer, a plug in, a .gpx file with the zones listed and hey presto.
My bank of rocker switches sit above fuses (hopefully) and include spot lights, fog lights, reverse light and buzzer, hazzard lights, stereo and amp isolation, AM 27mhz, UHF, interior light, engine cut out, underbonnet and over engine work lights, cigg plug (seperate switch for camp light / air pump at the rear of car) and inverter (for laptop).
And yes - dual batts are on the wish list. Now back to shameing the wife.
Bronze.
Geo-Technofile - When you absolutely, positively have to know exactly where you are!
Stuff fitting it all on the dash - Just fit it on the screen. Get with technology.
