https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/33057/how-many-split-buses-are-out-there

t2 ·

who on the forum has a regesterd 50 to 67 bus or an almost complete bus just about to be on the road.
i dont claim to know every bus in sydney but from the shows i have been to id say i not to many more than 20 to 25 over the past say 4 years , its rare that i see a bus i havent seen before and to be honest buses are the main reason i go
at the last shootout there was that sc from canberra and the bd sc i hadnt seen before.
just wondering whos got what and what state they live in

byronbus ·

I have two registered, daily drivers...

twoguns ·

i remember when for a while i was one of very few out at a show... then they all come. there seems to be quite a few,a nd i think soon we should organise a split parking section like htey do at the volksworld show. looks awesome having them all lined up beside each other.

oh to answer your question... i have one rego'd now and another pretty soon i hope.

squizy ·

Why don't you try and organise a Type 2 day - and see what comes out of the woodwork? That would great to see - especially with a cruise thrown in.

Squiz....

twoguns ·

could, but i think htey are quite spread out, i think. would be good if it could be doen. know there are many in sheds waiting for retos. or they are jsut holding them for now.
what you reckon darren, maybe we should try and organise something?.

crazyfiggi ·

I have a 62 single cab on the road as a daily driver.
Alex.

splittychick ·

Please make the split bus run after easter Anth coz i'll hopefully have mine on the road by then. That would be VERY cool.🙂

ByronBug ·

:sandrine
We have 58 splitty microbus...
soon to start resto after xmas
Judy 🙂

57kombi ·

There arnt that many actually on the road.
Lots of people buy them with the intention of doing the resto and then dont do anything.
Then they usually end up getting sold to someone else who has the same intentions and it keeps going round and round.

I have heard of quite a few that would be done by this year and they still havent, its quite suprising how much it actually costs to do one.

I have another project but that will be a couple of years away, so count me in on just the one.
Cheers
Dave

65busser ·

There's one here.

ClassicVW(pacific) ·

58 microbus here on the road and a 65 delux custom when I get time to finish it.
There are quite a few here to my surprise, I only found out about most since starting the business.

t2 ·

sorry fish i have invested enough$$$ on mine allready , two guns we could try to organize something but it would take a while ,and taking a while would work out for me as i still have a few jobs left to take care of. tommorrow the motor is going in.
what do you suggest , my thoughts are a valla type thing in an area thats a even drive for most like down south at narooma or bega to try to get some people from melbourne interested ,id really like to see 57 kombis bus and splitty chicks.
i also think it would be cool to have a all in one drag / show day at the creek a all in one type thing with a focus on type 2s but all vws welcome . i dont know just an idea

57kombi ·

Just let me know where and when.

As long as its not too far north???

Cheers
Dave

ClassicVW(pacific) ·

I would be tempted to drive down ........very slowly

57kombi ·

I might be tempted to drive north and east also very slow, dont agree with trailor queens so bring on the stone chips.

BenettonVW ·

2 out the back, none registered.... yet. 😉

silver ·

65 container van used daily for work........

micromatt ·

I've got a 65 Camper (registered) and a 64 Micro (the way I'm going, never to be registered). I know of 5 other registered pre 67s in my suburb or close surrounds. All itching for a splittie meet. I think Split Konnection were talking about a National Bus Bash somewhere somtime soon.

frenzix ·

60 sc ute, 55 bus... and i know where another one is... its another 55 cut in half in my backyard too. My sister has a 60 ish bus and her man has a 63 bus.

I too am falling under the unregistered section though.

57kombi ·

The ones IN PROGRESS pull your fingers out and get them on the road, the more the better, Lets get enough to start our own yearly show,
We could hold it in a differant state each year.

As its my idea the first one should be in Adelaide.

i am trying dave , tried to put in the motor today but my box is 6v so another couple of jobs back on the list f@#king kombi.
on positive note i did get the booster all hooked up and the brake fluid in with no leaks in the new lines i put in and it all works again, new wheel cylinders , shoes ,brake lines ,modified hand brake cables and new bay discs up front and a new master cylinder in a new spot . thats hard enough just to type glad its done

57kombi ·

You can grind the box where the flywheel doesnt fit but you will also need a 6v flywheel, you can also get a bush to replace the one in the gearbox to change the 6v starter so you can fit a 12 v one.

Or you can just use a 12 volt box.
Mine is a 1500 and works really well, are you using IRS or straight axle or are you keeping the reductions?

Cheers
Dave

frenzix ·

hey get off my case man.. I'm collecting parts for them.. plus planning for a house at the same time! and about to go on holidays.. :kiss

VolksFolks ·

i have 6 'shame' but hey 4 would be crushed for sure if i had'nt off collected them, 1 soon to be registered and another next year as for the others, mmmm a lot off work,

Andy

t2 ·

yep i made myself up a straight axle set up out of a early type 3 with early type rear drums sits nice, i will be grinding out the box and getting a bush for the starter motor, the box i picked up is in really good condition so i dont want to change it

scooter ·

Buy a bay and restore it instead....... :thumb

57kombi ·

Hey scooter, next you will be saying that beetles are worth restoring???

Cheers
Dave

t2 ·

done a bay allready, well i had a bay done allready

frenzix ·

dave next you will be telling everyone to weld up their semaphore holes!

Herbie ·

My 64 panel should hit the road sometime in the new year, I am making a start on it now and it seems to take me about 4 months to do a car, although a splitty Kombie has more bodywork so it may be a bit longer.
This is the Van I collected from Coober Pedy in August 2003.
I also have a 59 11window but it remains in limbo till I find a front donor as mine has a nasty whack to fix.
But thats at least one more splitty coming back on the road.

Cheers Anthony

57kombi ·

Weld up all holes including those silly ones in the roof, I think deluxes have them, waste of time really, how do you look through them when your driving.

Cheers
Dave

t2 ·

go herbie 4 months wow, i have taken nearly 2 years so far i thought it would take around 6 months little did i know ,but i have made many mods and only worked on it when i have some spare time and bought all parts that dont do anything but look nice so i guess its my fault.

57kombi ·

Mine took 3 and a half years, anything under 1 year will be pushing it, unless you work on it full time, also depends on what type of resto you do

Cheers
Dave

Herbie ·

I guess I am really tempting fate with talkin time scedules but it does revolve heavily around time availabe to spend.

Its the Nature of my business that leaves me with months at a time spare between movie productions, I do all my own work ussually, Because if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.{So I can only Blame myself for any stuff ups.}
Having said that I am pondering having someone else paint the kombie but it probably wont happen, because,
Today I'm thinking metallic Purple, mettalic Green and bright mettalic Silver with chrome Rav 4 rims, Lowered with custom chrome bumpers and lots of graphic airbrushwork.
This May take a little longer depending on how much energy I can muster up and I doubt paying someone for such a paint job will leave any funds for anything else.

I bought Herbie as an off road bug and kept him for a year while I collected all the parts I needed to fix him up.
But when I started it took me about 3 months to Git r dun.
Herbie was never to meant to be over the top anal in the finish as I planned to drive him to work each day, I learned years ago about going nuts on the paintwork and then getting stonechips dents and scratches from driving all the time, It breaks your heart. So I made him tidy but not crazy imaculate.
Its a much bigger project doing the kombie but it will be fun and the kombie is probably in better shape to start with.
Lets hope it all goes well.

Cheers Anthony
