1600s were fitted in 73's. All you need to do is obtain the right tinware for type one engine into late bus.

laying in bed this morning having pre christmas snooze and wondering what bits and pieces I could sell to get over the christmas blues and..... uh oh.

Missed out an important part. 73 pov packs came with 1600's but you cant just swap the tin onto a beetle engine. The engine needs a rear engine mount bar (which is not the same as a 1700 type 4 bar). I dont think the beetle engines had a mounting point on the case for the mount.

So to summarise, you can fit a 1600 to a late bay window, but it needs to be a kombi case, you need the adapter tin, and you need the engine mount bar.

so it must work ,i think mine is a 73 or 74

In a beetle, frame horns support the weight of the engine. The IRS bus doesnt have frame horns so is supported with the bar.

Some type 1 cases are "universal" and have the mounting in the case already. There are brackets which bolt to the oil pump cover to do the smae thing also.
Don't forget 1600's in a Bay kombi (available right up to '79) had a different gear box also. The 1700GB might be geared a little high for a 1600.
I do see the tinware at wreckers from time to time, they are not that rare.

The question of installing a Type I engine in a kombi that started with a Type IV engine has been discussed a few times on http://www.shoptalkforums.com. The general consensus is that it isn't worth the time and effort considering that a Type IV engine will bolt straight in!

Merry Christmas!

The 1600 gearbox has a final drive of 5.37:1 and the 1700 gearbox is 5.42:1

The tinware is different on the sides to meet up with the seal and the rear section near the muffler is different also
