AN Ocean Grove man was killed and another seriously injured after a head-on collision in Belmont yesterday.
Police last night confirmed a police van was trying to intercept one of the cars before the crash in Barwon Heads Road.
Media liaison spokesman Senior Constable Michael Henry said a divisional van had turned on its light when the red sedan veered across the road.
It collided head on with a green Kombi van travelling towards Geelong about 4.30pm.
The 39-year-old driver of the Kombi van died a short time later.
Rural Ambulance Victoria said paramedics airlifted the 23-year-old Geelong driver of the sedan, to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.
He was last night in a serious but stable condition.
Ambulance spokeswoman Jessica Li said paramedics worked on the 23-year-old man at the scene before he was airlifted.
The SES had to cut the older man from his badly damaged vehicle.
``A 23-year-old was treated for serious fractures and head injuries,'' Ms Li said.
They were the only two people involved in the crash.
Barwon Heads Road was closed in both directions for several hours as a result of the crash, causing major disruptions to peak-hour traffic.
Cars were diverted around the scene from the roundabout at Breakwater Road.
Investigators from the Police Major Collision Unit were last night in Belmont trying to piece together the crash.
Sen-Constable Henry said investigations into the circumstances were continuing.
``The incident is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit who will prepare a report for the Coroner,'' he said.
``As a standard procedure the Ethical Standards Department will assist in the investigation.''
The fatality comes a week after Geelong's top traffic cop praised motorists for cutting Greater Geelong's road toll to three, 10 less than the same time last year.
It now stands at four.

yeah i heard about it on the news. very sad.
apparently cops were behind the guy in the commo at the lights and sounded their siren. the commo guy freaked out and went accross the median strip and into the kombi.
the man killed left behind a wife and two young kids. pretty sad. wrong place wrong time.
I wouldnt have thought the kombi would have lost it's roof though? looks horiffic.

Very sad. Why does this have to happen to such innocent people?
Just another reason to dislike bombadores

we had a friend die this time of year. the worst about it is you always remember.... puts a bummer on things.

Being a kombi driver from the same small town as the poor guy killed - this is really sad. I didn't know him personally but did know the kombi - and often waved.
I also regularly travel the same road - so it's a real wake up call.
poor bloke - what a Christmas for his kids.

By the sounds of this, it could happen on any road. Dont leave home grumpy, guys. You just never know.

Never a good time for these sort of things to happen but this time of year does make it harder especially in the few following years...it can make it that much harder to enjoy the silly season...
My thought are with anyone who has lost a loved one...it's not always an easy time :sandrine
...that roof does look bad the way it peeled back :jesus

They would have cut the roof and peeled it back to get him out....
