Backto89 ·

its New Year, and show season is looming around the corner.

So what would you say is the best VW to come out of Australia and why. Post pics if you have them, I can then get the idea of why a dub is so special.

Just interested in getting a flavour of your show cars, past and present.

So if you show me yours.....i will show u mine LOL

:duh

Backto89 ·

No show cars?

I enclose one of ours from 89. Built by a bodyshop called Thump Thump it featured flush fit teardrops, pillarless and deseamed bodywork oh and a fluro Billabong interior from you guys in Oz.

Got revamped about 4 yrs ago and is on my Back to 89 books for my displays in the UK.

I give you billabug....well I would of if the pic thing was working!!!!

vwtyp2 ·

we build our cars to use them,
not trailer queens.

Backto89 ·

This was used as a daily driver.

However trailer queens are in short demand.

So there must be some nice looking dubs that have been built by you guys, that have been inspirational?

Billa is now in the North East of the UK and is driven to and from shows, where it is displayed in the Back to 89 displays.

don't forget when you posted the first one was 430am our time. Most folk are starting back at work today after the New Years long weekend. So you may not get any pics for a short while (ie: tonight our time)
Not sure what a lot of other folk thing, but I reckon the peach convertible (I think its wayne penrose's) is one of the best at the moment. I'll check if there are pics in the other section.

vwtyp2 ·

Dave O'Connor's "Kafer"
super clean, street reg'd 12 sec 1/4 mile.
that's inspiring.

or Jon Kruger's '56 oval that appeared in Ultra VW.
Silver Grey, 2180cc, polished MWS BRM's
this is the car that inspired me to do my '54.

or Shane Hinton's 55 "cherry ripe" deluxe type 2 split.
NOS or recond everything.
like a new car.
like porno for splitty lovers.

try these links. I am sure the pics are on here somewhere but my computer is running slowwwwwww today.

http://www.clubvw.org.au/ (part way down, left side, click on 2004 VW Nationals Show/Shine photos

or

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?search_keywords=vw+and+Sydney&search_terms=all

have seen pics of thump thump before, in one of your mags I think. Looks good. The story said (from memory) one of the guys had to get out of the car business after developing some sickness/reaction? Pity, that thing looks sweet.

Damn, link doesn't work to Samba properly, you will have to cut and paste the whole thing over, it loses the Sydney bit otherwise.
Cheers

Mmm,
like that single cab splittie from Sydney. Love the ground decoration around '56 oval 🙂 nice... bet there were a few sore heads out of that one.
Anyone got any other shots of the Type 3 Notch out of Melb, the black one that Manx posted just above on the Checker board mat? I think its owned by one of the guys from Volkommen Art.
Thats Wayne's Cab I mentioned before as well. I can't get to my shots, anyone else got any? Its even decorated inside the wheel wells!! and its driven around by waynes wife (Forgot what her name is😀)

PS Stu, pics have to be under 50kb to be posted.

VDUBXTC ·

Here are some shots i took of the black Notch at the Sydney nationals lastyear.

NigeType3 ·

Sorry this is noting to do with this post but could someone give me some info on the third pic manx_xtc posted, the grey 60's type 3 squareback.

I want to know where I can get the side mirrors from or if they have a name, model number any info would be great. Also the material the under bonet area is line in red with what is it and is it readaly avaliable.

Thanks Nige

gayanne ·

These are all top show cars showing at vw shows,we need to also show of these cars at Street Machine shows as well.Ive been to 4 of these shows won Best Engineered top Super Comp and runner up Best Presented against Summernats cars, come on boys lets show our toys.Just love the purple oval always kept in good cond and a good bloke that owns it.JVLRacing Orange Race Car:P:P

penguin ·

All I can say is that its a Victorian rego'd squareback, and I agree. Nice mirrors. I think the material under the front is just a felt type stuff, but someone here must know who actually owns it. I don't think it was one of the two Volkommen Art cars.

NigeType3 ·

Thanks penguin I have seen them on european cars but not here they look hot. And talking of hot Waynes beatle rocks that is so clean. The last mag I got with that in it didn't do it justice these pics are better. Such a nice car can't belive its use on the road.

Hi

This car has not been around for a while. While Aero gurads are not everyones cup of tea the level of detail achieved with this is one of the best Ive seen, and its for sale.

Geez.. I feel priveliged to have my car in that lot, thanks heaps Manx!!

Those mirrors you spoke of are 'Talbot' mirrors, or Talbot style mirrors, or racing mirrors for that 60's period feel.

57 Chook Shed ·

Gotta love Nat`s Buggy from Adelaide.

57 Chook Shed ·

But especially Dave`s "Split 1"
Not sure of any cars here from the Rad Shorts Era though!
I was back there with ya mate (well from about `91).
It`s mad to think that "Lemon Bavois", "Targa","Billabug" etc are now Nostalgia!
I reckon Keith Seumes "No Mercy" drag car was pretty damn awesome and very inspirational.
Cheers
Graham.

My Nostalgia isnt about 70s empi etc which has been done to death.

Its about cars that inspired my generation to build some truly awesome cars.

Billabug as mentioned before is on the books, Targa has just been redone and debut again this year, Bav is tucked away. I have Bavs old interior in my car, and some Thump bits as im only 2miles from Jay.

Also on the books and shown this yr, Alan Smart Tube framed oval, Troy Billen Speedster (was white green scallops then outrageous), Andy Parrotts Trophy trap the blue 74 with all the billet details, Betelguise race car of Jim Bowen, Shorty splitty once blue n pink called dolly mixture, Als Cal. I got around 130 old feature show cars on my books, and I get about 40 to Bug Jam all lined up with people going "wow remember that".

Its a breath of fresh air to see some different rides than the whats been cloned in the UK as Old School or to me 70s retro Vintage Cal Look, on this forum. Im sure many are really into the 70s stuff, but for me I didnt want those that grew up in the scene in the late 80s early 90s to forget about those special cars that we all read about and took pics of. Its all to easy to loose yourself to the good ole day of Orange County, although no ones lived it, apart from the pioneers etc. So I stuck to my roots, and the displays have been really well received. Sometimes with me commentating over why certain cars are so special, as those new in the scene have never seen these cars before. I add display cards about each car in their window, so the enthusiast can read why the car is in the display. Its hard work but worth doing. Some coverage in mags, think Ultra have been very good as well as VW Motoring doing a 2 page in Octobers issue. I organised the Best of Best for Volksworld last year at their show, and also a mini nostalgia display and commentating. All goes down well, and gives many something to aim for than a large engine and certain wheels.

No Mercy is now called Tarmac Teaser I think, and the old funny car is Tarmac Teaser 2 with a huge methenol engine in it.

Keep the pics coming, mine are to large :duh

may be more pics of the peach cab, its called Hypo-VW, and its eneterd into our SummerNats (Summer Nationals held in Canbera each year, for show, drag, special cars etc. Sort of a car junkies paradise).
Apparently the spray pic on the glove box is Lisa (the owner/driver), but you can see from Buzzbugs pics that they have a surfboard to match as well.

Hey Stu,
I remember when I was back in the UK around `99, seeing an old VolksWorld feature car parked up someone`s driveway in Runcorn, Cheshire.
It was the one with the fluro orange paint splashes on the front over a white base. It had slant chop too. Do you remember that car?
Has someone restored it??
I think what you are doing is highly commendable.
Empi to me means the Taiwanese shit sold by the likes of Kingfisher Kustoms, Limited Edition, Big Boys Toys etc!!!
I wouldn`t say that I`m fully into the whole Pastel paint/ rad shorts thing but I too am part of that generation and was more inspired by the UK VeeDub scene in that era than anything that "The Old School" back in CA did. Although without them, we would possibly not be involved with the scene we know today. It takes all types and styles to make the VW scene tick but I`m not really a "BRM`s and twin 48`s" person!
Keep up the good work mate.
Would love to see some pics.
Send me some..... gradarlingtonau@yahoo.com.au
Cheers
Gra.

The Adrian Coker "Dayglo" is no longer dayglo. I have the car on the books, now with a flame design in I think dark green and dark burgandy.

Go to backto89nostalgia.com and then onto the Forums, the guy replied back to me on there.

New out is the Russell Fielding Baja from back in the day, you see the added bonus of bringing back old show cars, is that many who buy these many moons on and are in need of another resto, now choose to restore them back to how they originally came out back in the day. The Baja as an example, has been rebuilt back to its 88 feature.

Also

Als Cal, I almost bought it. Let my friend Ian onto the lead and he bought it. It was really F@cked, and some hidden problems. However, Ian consulted with me every step to make sure that Als Cal didnt detract to much from the original concept. Interior is now white, has white window rubbers, and the chromies have changed. Ian wanted ERCOs...I told him he would be very sad to put such "trendy" wheels on it, its gotta be nostalgic or bust. So we tracked down some back in the day Eagle 529s for it. Looks different, but you can tell its Als Cal a mile away with all the mods, like suicides, deseamed gutters, hidden headlight adjusters oh and that billet square steering wheel, which is now fully polished. I have Als original chromies in my lock up 😀

Your pics are correct inc the race car.

Frostys Bus...1loskitzo/dolly mixture...wanna hear that story, inc the running of the engine in at the 1/4 mile at the pod? Its Class...just holla if u want the story.
