Thought I would post some updated shots of my new toy. For those who may not have seem it on general chit chat I thought I would post detail type shots on this car.
Its a 1965 T34 Karmann Ghia that has been fitted with a 2.4ltr flat 6 911 Porche engine.
Runs late Type 3 front end with disc brakes and late IRS Type 3 rear end. Gearbox is VW 4 speed.
Wheels are Fuch 15 x 6 and 15 x 7 (I think)
911 motor has a dry sump and an oil tank has been mounted in the spare wheel area to move wieght forward. Same for the battery.
Since I purchased it late last year, I have sorted out the wiring, put on a new set of tyres. The old ones were a little worn and a little on the wide side for me.
Here are a few pics taken today.

Nice thing Dean. I'll bet it's hard to restrain yourself. She'd sound nice too.
vwtyp2 ·
nice buy.
what's it go like?
I looked at buying this but obviously didn't.
other things etc. etc.
Grey 57 ·
havent fully tested out the performance bit yet. All I can say is that it gets to the legal limit mighty, mightly quickly.
Bit wary of Mr Plod spoiling my fun and doing a sacrificial burning of my license if I get too carried away.
vwtyp2 ·
ha!
yep, I know what you mean.
maybe there's some off street, legal drags near you?
test it out, and keep us posted.
what do you suppose the 0-60 and 0-100 times would be?
11CAB ·
Thats running the early mechanical injection..... If you look at the engine case on the r/h side of the fan down near the crankshaft pulley there will be a number stamped into it....something like 901/xx that will tell you what year the engine is from and what country it is from as well.
Grey 57 ·
Supposedly 0 to 100 in 5.7 seconds. BUT that was with the original 2.0ltr 911 motor that has more HP. 180 vs the 160 that this 2.4 has. Its certainly not up to that sort of performance at the moment. Needs a real good tune as its running very rich. Still reading all about these motors and trying to understand what everything is and does.
As soon as its sorted I will be heading off to a drag night somewhere. Cant wait.
Graeme, the motor is a 72 2.4ltr T motor. 160 hp. The cooking version. The 2.4 S motors are the tuned up ones producing 180hp. More than enough power out of either in this car to consign my license straight to hell if I am not carefull.
vwtyp2 ·
nice one Dean.
can't wait to see some vids of it in flight. 🙂

Grey 57 ·
The T34 has been layed up in the shed for the past few weeks slowly getting all the things done for the Vic Roads road worthy certificate.
Started out getting the fuel system all sorted after the little mishap the last time I drove it.
Decided that metres and metres of fexible hose was probably not the best option so have replaced it with steel from front to rear With new line runni ng thru the tunnel. Easier in a Type 3 than a Beetle because of the inspection hatches at the front and rear.
Sitting on axle stands in a way too small shed.
Grey 57 ·
The main offending fuel hose was the return for the fuel filter. Poor plastic fitting popped off and almost turned my toy into a 6.00 oclock news item.
Have now run proper steel lines thru the bulkhead with grommets and body clips and cut the flexible lines down to a minimum.
Grey 57 ·
Relocated the fuel pump. Was attached to the lower floor panel and I reckon was way too exposed and had a heap of flexible hoses dangling around.
Now tucked up beside the gearbox nose and again flexible hose cut down to a minimum.
Grey 57 ·
next bit is sorting out the oiling system. The original set up had 2 full flow oil filters. One on the return hose to the oil tank and one strangely on the suction or delivery hose.
The delivery hose was looped up over the rear axle placing the filter above the level of oil in the oil tank. To my way of thinking this set up would make it hard for the oil pump to receive oil. So the second oil filter is now history.
I have to re plumb the hoses to keep them as low as possible all the way from the oil tank (at the front) to the engine.
Grey 57 ·
The oil delivery hose. Filter removed and dangling in space at the moment. Plan is to bend up a 25mm steel tube and bolt it to the gearbox below the CV. Then bends back towards the long steel tube that runs along the sill to the oil tank in the front.
Grey 57 ·
This is the oil return side. The filter was right in the way of connecting up the heatexchanger pipes to get the heater and demisters working. ( You need these for a Vic Roads RWC) Ah the joys of custom cars hey.
So it has had to be relocated. I think I will probably move it again as I am concerned that the axle may hit the filter on full compression.
Grey 57 ·
One of the last jobs will to seal the engine bay. There is a huge gap between the rear of the engine and the rear panels on the car. Want to use rubber sealing similar to the Beetle engine bay seal if I can. And avoid steel to steel contact to cut down vibrations and noise.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
That big black thing is the muffler.
[Edited on 26-1-2005 by Grey 57]
Grey 57 ·
Some funny gaps to fill on the sides of the motor.
Grey 57 ·
Any some big gaps to seal off at the front too. So any ideas you guys might have would be really appreciated.
pete wood ·
Whoa! nasty fuel line buso, when I was putting fuel lines in for my EFI setup a mechanic friend of mine actually told me to use flexible lines down through tunnel, I was surprised anyone would be that silly. Suffice to say, the engineering signatory wasn't happy with it either.
I feel for you with all your oil hoses too, Once you put a large non-VW motor in an IRS car, everything seems to be crowded around the axles.
Keep up the good work, it'll be tops once it's done. Fitting the turbo will be a snap, um, was I thinking out loud again? gotta stop that........:thumb
vwtyp2 ·
nice work Dean.
I don't think I would have had the patience to fix it up as you have.
Will definately be sweet once you have it all sorted. :beer
Mr Bubble Head ·
Nice work dean
looks like youv'e been busy. I have an idea for the rear closing panel the one above the exhaust. Make it double skined so that the heat from your exhaust won't rise into the engine bay. maybe make a heat shield over the exhaust as well. It may sound complex but I recon it would be easy to do.
good luck
speedster356 ·
Nice Dean...will you be cruising up for the Nats?

Hmmm turbo set up hey! I was in a Porche wreckers yesterday and saw all these kool turbo bits and though hmmmmm!!!!.
Nick that idea of a double skinned panel is a good one mate. I think I will go with that. Maybe sandwich some heat sheilding and sound proof stuff between the 2 skins.
The oiling set up just got a lot simpler after a discussion with some porsche guys yesterday too. Put me straight on a lot of things.
Pete, I would love to cruise this thing up to the Nats. See how it all pans out. Could even trailer it up I spose.

Nice mate. bet ya carn't wait to start cruzin...........
Grey 57 ·
Whats that shiney thing on my bumper. !!!!! Yep finally registered. All went withiut a hitch and just flew thru the Vic Roads inspection. After the 3 of us including 2 Vic Roads vehicle inspectors worked out where the engine number was. For the record its under the right hand side of the fan housing on a 911 motor.
So all there was to do was open up a vien and give them lots of money and I was away with a new set of plates and a rego sticker. Most expensive bit of sticky paper and 2 bits of aluminium I have ever known.
State taxes hey!!!:repuke
Been for a nice long drive tonight, just because I could. Motor needs a good tune (because I have been mucking around with it) oil change and a good long drive to blow out the cobwebs. Other than that she pretty much good to go. Bound to be a few little things that crop up with us. But all in all I am wrapped.
Cant wait to get it down to Calder on a drag night soon. :thumb

Oh the right hand drive T34's are code Type 344

$47.00 for the slim line plates.

btw Dean, try this with your next night photo shoot with your car: set your camera to that same exposutre time and apeture, but use the flash as well. then you should be able to see some of the front of the car, as well as having a dark background... =)

Keep up the good work.
Dennis
Grey 57 ·
Thanks Dennis, hey California is only a 16 hour plan ride away. Come on over for Valla next year. I will be there along with the a lot of the best VW's in Aussie.
Finished "tuning" the engine tonight. Taken me a few goes to get it running right as I am a real novice when it comes to these flat six motors with mechanical injection. 6 throttle bodies to syncronise heaps of linkages to set correctly and the injection pump to set just so. All by ear with out the luxury of a CO meter. But despite myself I have managed to get it idling right and pulling thru the rev range with little hesitation.
Taking it to work tomorrow. Will chuck in a can of injector cleaner and get a few k's of use over the weekend to burn out the carbon thats more than likely built up from way too much idling in the drive way. So Melb dubbers keep an eye out for me and dont forget to wave.
Cheers

Dyno ·
You need to get yourself the original 911 tin and bolt it to the motor. This will remove all the wierd angles, nooks and crannies around the engine. From here, take measurements of the existing gaps and use your imagination to draw some rough sheetmetal designs which will follow the contours of the body and has tabs for fixing to the body.( break the sheets into sections...ie left, right ,right rear and left rear for ease of installation.)Redraw all diagrams and double check the measurements, keeping in mind you will need a uniform 1.5cm gap between the engine tin and the body tin. Go to a sheet metal worker, get them made, test in car and drill mounting holes, ogle over your ingenuity(LOL), remove them again, powder coat and then refix them. From here, you should be left with a 1.5cm gap around the motor... simply buy a late bay engine bay seal and fit( if it is too short, buy another).. hey presto.... seems tedoius... but a job done properly is done ONCE.
Grey 57 ·
Good advice Dyno, I was thinking along the same lines. That was until I got a price for a 2nd hand piece of rear tin!! $250 large ouch. Think that this is still the best way to go and I will be keeping my eyes out for a piece of tin at a better price.
To be honest the engine doesnt seem to heat at all. Temp is pretty constant at 80.C
Only hassle is fumes getting sucked in when the heaters are on and the car is stationary in traffic. On the move is no worry.
Grey 57 ·
What better way to spend a nice Queens Burday monday than take ya VW out for a spin in this unseasonally warm Melb winter. Headed off to one of my fav spots not far from my joint and took a few update shots of the Karmann. Trying to get a bit techie with the background and stuff too.

Scored some really nice front seats for my T34 a couple of weeks ago. And spent most of yesterday fitting them.
These are a pair of Scat Procar seats. Fully stitched in black vinyl. Look like they belong in there. And most of all they are way way way more comfortable than the old Datsun (something) seats that were originally fitted. And I can now get into the rear seat. Well a hobbit could, cause its a bit tight for a full size adult.
Heres a few pics

After a big search and a lead discovered by good mate at the Pomona Swap Meet, then a trip half way around the world I finnally have the correct T34 Front Bumper fitted to my Ghia. It had a slightly modded Type 3 bumper previously and I was never really happy with it. Most people didnt know the diff but I did.
So heres a couple of pics. Almost ready for the DOVW. Just a few little things to do and a real good clean and polish. I am a happy man. (for now :P)
If any ones needs a Type 3 front bumper let me know.

Cool Dean, your bling is nearly as nice as mine!!!!!:P
65busser ·
Deano,
Those over riders are nice. Are they what make it correct or were they an option?
Grey 57 ·
Hi Brad the overiders are T34 ones. They are different shape to all other VW ones. I got these on ebay about 8 months ago. The bumpers on these are 3 piece jobs. Same as a T1 Karmann. The overiders cover the joins so I think that overiders were a standard thing not an option for Karmanns.
What I do know is that they are all hard to find bits in good shape. Half the fun is the hunt I spose.

JNR356, you can tweak on my 2.4 anytime mate, . But I think that bigger brakes might be the next major upgrade before any more power. She's running pretty sweet now. Just fitted the last component of the Crane Ignition system tonight. A big arse Crane coil pack. So sparks no issue at all.

Hey Dean - Great find that bumper. Maybe I can return the T3 one and get my $100 back. We wont tell anyone about the scallop out of it. Spyder is taking shape - getting to the point of wiring and mapping the ECU. DOVW in Perth is my aim. Probably on a trailer though!!
Love to drive yours again now you've got it all sorted - puts hair on ya chest I bet.
Grey 57 ·
Cheers Ken, dunno about the hairs on my chest mate, but it certainly makes the hairs on the back of neck stand up when that motor is roaring. You would notice a big diff to way it drives now thats for sure. Getting very easy to handle now.

Your T34 was parked near to us at DOVW, and I went back to look at it countless times.
This is one car that looks way better in the flesh than in photographs; it's go my thinking about a T34 myself!
[ Edited on 19-12-05 by modulus ]
pete wood ·
Your T34 has to be one of the most underrated VWs in OZ. It looked great 10 years ago in fast 4s, it look just as good now, and with the standard bumpers back on what a sleeper.😎
Grey 57 ·
Thanks guys I am pretty happy with how its turning out too. Still a list of detail and cosmetic stuff I want to do to this KG, but it drives real nice now and is easy to handle.
Pete W hopefully you will get a chance to see it in the metal at the Sydney Nats. Planning on driving it over.
Grey 57 ·
Ahhh Xmas holidays. Why dont we just relax and watch the cricket. No lets get covered in 40 yo grease instead.
Too much time on the hands so yesterday I relocated, replumbed and re-wired the electric fuel pump in the T34. Was mounted at the back but above the outlet on the tank. Now its mounted in the front (on the front beam) directly below the tank. Controlled with a relay. Runs nice and quiet now.
Grey 57 ·
And what jobs to do on the 35 degree day. Oh I know! Remove the doors. They have only been on for 40+ years couldnt be that bad. Haa!! Impact driver , drills and taps and they are off. Had to take them off to get the hinges re-bushed. Probab;y coulda picked my days better tho.
Bug Boy can you call me. My mobile got broken and I dont have your number. :thumb

The KG is looking good.....did the cricket get boring ...and I hope the shed had aircon I've been trying not to melt away for the last two days so hot
Grey 57 ·
Finally after a few weeks my doors are back on. Got the hinges re-built by a Vintage Car Resto company in Keysborough over the past few weeks. Its the only way to fix sagging doors on T3 Karmans as new hinges are like rocking horse sh*t.
They re-built these with teflon bushes so they operate real smooth. And the doors close bewtyful.
As these hinges are made from cast alloy I thought I would polish them up rather than painting them again. Not factory original but looks way better for mine.
Good to see nice straight shut lines on the car too now
Judsons4eva ·
Dean
Good to see you retained those stop straps I put on the car!!

Still sorting the 550. Made some side idicators to avoid cutting a 1 in hole in my guard.
Fitting a high light brake light off a new audi TT and windscreen washer, the pits are getting closer!!

Looking good Dean.... I was in love with this car way back in the 80's...
It was an east coast car back then... Funny how the world turns!
I didn't know you owned the T34 Ken.... Did you sell it at the 'Free'n'Easy' the other year?
Love the 550 by the way.... Looked way good sitting on the hill @ DOTVW!!
You must be getting close to rego now?
Some of us NoH2O guys are thinking of heading over for the Nats or maybe Valla this year....
You should drive the 550 over!
Be nice to see all the Porsche Reps and the T34 and that 911 powered Bay sitting together!
And Dean you MUST drive the Ghia up to the Nasho.... Its a great drive!
Hell if I can drive over from Perth for it (which I did a few years back) you could drive up from sunny Melbourne!
Keep up the good work Dean.... Your keeping a bit of history on the road there!
Judsons4eva ·
Simon
Yeah I bought the T34 several years ago with a blown (up) engine. It was a 2 l 911s with a dropped valve. I bought a 2.4l injected engine from Swan Porsche and dropped it in the T34 and sold it to Dean thru' this site. I ended up finding a repacement piston for the "S" engine and was intending to put in the 550 when it arrived. But the 6 cylinder engine won't fit in a 550 chassis. I then opted for a 914 engine that i got from Pete Arnoldi.
Rego is getting closer. Still sorting FI and all the little bits the the stupid rules dictate for "new" car.
Not sure if I'm up to the trek east - but will see. Dean up for a drag if I do.

Bit of spare time on the weekend and I have finally gotten around to re-locating the brake fluid reseviour. It was previously mounted on a custom made bracket in the nose. But the lines ran up hill then down to the master cylinder. I wasnt really sure if the fluid would flow properly.
So I have now relocated it to operate like a late model Type 3 set up. Looks way cleaner too.
Ken all that folded metal in the front for the Brake fluid and washer bottle is all gone now. Have a lot more front boot space.
Regarding the Nats, its not looking good at the moment guys sorry.
