Trawling around my PC I found a couple of photos of my 73 1303 while I was building it. Reminded me exactly how much rust the damn thing had.
Doesnt look so bad does it ?

Right rear needed a little bit of work.....
Matching bolt holes and panel profiles provided a challenge.

And on the inside as well.
Damn that VW foam they put in there !

Heads are bog standard 040's
Carbs were going to be 40 IDF's but I could never find someone to tune them, so they are still in the shed.
Doug Sweetman ·
So it got registered with a single 40 DCNF.
Which Sucked big time.
Doug Sweetman ·
And now it gets about OK with Kadrons.
Though now I have K&N's on it and a homemade breather box too.
Desert Moose ·
any pic's of your K&N setup
Doug Sweetman ·
Not on my work computer - I might have one at home, otherwise I can charge the digicam up and take some. Anything you wanted to see in particular ?
They are just K&N inserts to the std kadron filter top and bottom plates - they are a bit taller though, so the central stud needs to be extended to cope.

I still haven't done anything with mine, and I'm looking for ideas.
Doug Sweetman ·
This is the only photo that I have with the K&N's on - they look heaps better.
Kurt and Troy and Vee Dub Repairs and Spares did the work, so they should be able to give you the part numebr for the filter I guess.

Doug,
The rust in mine was almost identical! I share your pain. Good job.
Patience is a virtue but rust destroys the souls of the virtuous!

Thanks Brendan - it was a learning process for me. I learnt that there is no such thing as 'surface rust' in a 1970's beetle !

Some more up to date photos, and some photos from my win in the WA VW Club motorkhana last year.

Another Beetle saved!
Who owns the shed she's in in the first shot?
Rob...
Doug Sweetman ·
Thats one of my old man's sheds. Its a good size (15 x 9m) for a 700sqm suburban block......
Thanks Barry, I'd had those photos for a while and never found a quiet hour to put them up - thought there might be a few on here that would enjoy them as much as I enjoyed the day !
zac_smits ·
that's not a khana...
that's just you in a paddock :P:P
(but still looks cool!)
Doug Sweetman ·
Actually the photos are my celebratory donuts after the khana 🙂 I have a really cool trophy at home (which I guess I have to give back one day) with a vw conrod (bent at 45°), piston and half a valve embedded int he top of the piston, all mounted on jarrah burl, real nice.
sshhhhh dont tell anyone there was only four people competing in the khana though........
