What software are you trying to install?
If its the drivers, go to the manufacturers website and donwload the latest version.

How are you trying to install the software?.. Is it off a CD?.. If so.. Leave the equipment unconnected.. Install the software off the CD.. It should autorun when you put the CD into the drive.. After the software is installed.. reboot machine and THEN connect the printer device.. If you are running windows programme with USB support (I assume its a USB connection) the machine will automatically find a "new device" and install the correct software drivers etc..
If this doesn't happen you should be able to select the software through "install new hardware" from the control panel.. procedure is as follows..
Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Hardware
Hope this helps.. If not let me know a little more..

It is a Lexmark X1170 All in One Print.Copy.Scan

Some thoughts.
Lexmark drivers are notorius for these type of set-up problems.
Try upgrading to XP and see if the problem persists!
Do you have an older win 98 machine? If so try installing the combo unit on this machine and see if it will run.

Hi

Win 2000 is a stable OS and compatible with nearly all peripherals.. We run this on all our work stations except laptops.. If it was me I wouldn't upgrade to XP as a fix.. If you have other reasons, sure.. but not to install a printer.. Let me take a look in the morning.. Sl;eepy time now..

I have had no problems wth 2000 until now has been very stable.
I think that I am typing the command line in wrong as I am not up with this dos stuff. All I know is that you have to be spot on with what you type.

As for the why not, get a decent firewall.....most of the Hotfixes will slow your system down, particularly important that this doesn't happen when using heavy CPU load style programs. Graphics or Music!
Also how long is it since you re-installed Windows? Once every 6 months to a year is best, speeds the machine up immensely. This is a real pain. Make ceretain that you back up all your data before you do a fresh install. Actually making certain that you do regular back-ups of your data is essential. You haven't lived with a computer till you have lost several years work because of a crash and the back-ups are corrupt. Solution is to have more than one back-up. A DVD-RW is a great cheap way to back up, a spare hard drive is also very effective.
Back to your Lexmark problem. have you checked on the Lexmark site for any updated drivers for your machine.
Thanks guys for all your help, but the thing just pee'd me off so much I took it back. Hopefully the HP printer I have on order, will do the job for me.
Thanks again
