I hear Ross Freestone is freshening up the old dog. Does any one know a spy in the Tamworth area? His business is called Automotion. Take your cameras & note pads! We want details!

vw54 ·

I talked with Ross about 18 months ago, he was undecided wether to revive the car or not. Apparently it sitting on the trailer in the corner of his business shop.

I was hoping he would get enthusisatic about the new Sydney track ( WSID ) opening in Jan 2004, and having our VW Nats event in April.

56astro ·

I remember as a kid when it was at one of the early VW Spectaculars, it was a real conversation piece.

As was the amphibian beetle (what's it's name?) that tried to cross Bass Strait or something.

vw54 ·

Seabug, I actually went for a spin in the Valla Lagoon... funny

dangerous ·

Well, it has been over two years since I posted this question
and today I got on the phone and gave him a ring.

The good news is that he IS reviving the car
and even better he is hoping to have it ready for Warwick this year!

Ross' previous best with the 600kg car was a 10.71@124mph way back in the early ninetys.

Ross said that he has gone through the car front to back
with his sights set on solid nine second passes.

Engine size will be around 2900cc and he is looking or about 100 more HP!

It is great to see some of the old legends of the scene back at it!

NOW...
How can we get Peter Keegan and Henry Spicak back behind the wheel!?

11CAB ·

I'd love to see Henry and his Manx.....is that car still around?

HS618 ·

I would like to know if it is still around also!

vw54 ·

HS didnt you keep all the good go fast bits of the engine
havent seen the buggy around

Hi

And this time was done normally aspirated. It would be great to see him in the 9s and all of the past racers race again, I didn't say old. How does the song go, "Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill"

Steve

BeetleJuice ·

I remember seeing him go at the Christmas tree a few times. It was a beast of a thing.

He must be doing some mods to the chassis to tame it down too..Especially with an extra 100 Hp!

:thumb...yep looks like you found it alright!

aussiebaja ·

i might have to sneak a look at ross's workshop one day im shopping

dangerous ·

I have spoken again to Ross this week and he is super keen.
He is getting very enthusiastic about running his car again and is
looking forward to catching up with all the old timers, (and new fans) at Warwick.
He says he has been keeping his reactions sharp,
and has even been keeping fit and lost some weight.

The word is, that the time and effort that is going into the new engine combo,
it should be a world standard N/A combo!

vw54 ·

someone sent me these

Any luck Dave

and in colour

Ross will be at Warwick if all goes to plan.
Still finishing off the heads and then onto the dyno.
Word is that he could have bought a nice house block in Tamworth with the investment in the engine.
Hooray for the Volksy scene I say!

Stanley ·

Between all the new volksies and the vee's at Morgan park, Warwick is going to be a hoot!!!!

dangerous ·

I have Just been in contact with Ross, and his new 2897cc engine has been on the engine dyno for thorough testing and tuning.

It has been over 4 years of design and planning to get where he wanted to be.

As predicted,
the engine has world quality power and torque figures.

315 hp at 7500rpm
and 260 ft.lbs of torque at 5600 rpm.

In fact, Ross said it was still making 305 hp at 8000, so it is definitely an engine with a broad spread of power and torque.

These figures are "uncorrected",
so in good weather, or at a track closer to sea level(eg. Portland?),
good results are expected.

With Ross' car weighing in at around 1550 lbs,
trap speeds above 135mph should be no problem.
This equates to solid nine second time slips on a good track .

Ross said the engine handled 48 power/test runs on the dyno and they got the tune very good.
Ignition, fuel and Intake runner length were all optimised.

The next step will be to check the engine components thoroughly to ensure it will be ready for action in the car early next year.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Absolutely awesome!! Now to get the old silver fox back behind the wheel....

colin ·

I heard he may be ready for a run at Gunnedah in March.

I will try and slip into his workshop this week and see him.

Cheers Col

vassy66T1 ·

Fantastic! Wicked setup on the engine 👍

Stanley ·

I love the old gasser style cars. Can't wait to see this car running.

All we need now are a few more......wasn't there a "camel" car around somewhere......😵‍💫

colin ·

Okay, so i went and had a quick chat with Ross today.
He has partially disassembled the motor after the dyno session and so far all looks good. Actually he said all looks great. He was a little worried about the cam no taking the pressure and snapping, he is running triple chevy vale springs, but all looks good.
I asked him about a possible return to the track next year, he said it,s taken him 4 1/2 years to get to this stage so he is not rushing anything.
Man it,s got some crazy ports on his cylinder heads and awesome injection system.
I will try and pop in again when he has done some more and post any progress.

Cheers Col

Woo Hoo

Like that last pic Dave

hellbugged ·

cool............i remember in the mid nineties, Ross came and cut the body skin from an oval window we had, saying the structural/strength areas were not needed........so i wonder how different the body will be

RISKYBUG ·

im not sure how much different it will be as i never seen it in the 90's it's nice and low and it's still running drum breaks all round!

grogy ·

i saw it run early eighties at surfers .for the first time at surfers i think, and it ran without the rear of the car , like a baja. it popped a big wheelie and he had to back off cause it was heading for the grass

t2 ·

that has got to be one of the coolest looking drag cars i have seen, i hope it still looks like that awesome👍

TopGun ·

I was talking to Ross earlier today. Apparently Houndog's nearly completed and safety upgraded; he's planning to run it at Willowbank this May.

Dyno runs produced 316HP which is almost 100HP more than it had when it ran V8 times with an ET of 10.71!

Can't wait to see it in action.

westi ·

warick this year is going to be unreal with alot of superquick n/a cars this year.
can't wait to see this one in the flesh.
we need more pic's and updates.

vw54 ·

I hope he does make it

but wont hold my breath LOL

STOCK ·

THOSE HP FIGURES ARE AWSOME
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE CARS BEEN WEIGHED YET
EITHER WAY + 300 PONIES THIS SHOULD PROVE FOR SOME
UNREAL TIMES CANT WAIT TO SEE IT👍👍

colin ·

Hey guys i will try and slip down and see Ross next week.
I have a feeling he may try to have the car ready for Gunnedah drags on the 28th,29th March.
Will post more info soon.

Cheers Col

TopGun ·

I don't think Ross is planning to run at Gunnedah. He said "Aussie cars should hold Aussie records", so I suspect he's planning to enter it only in ¼ mile ANDRA events.

He was also telling me that as well as producing 316hp Houndog's developing 256ft/lbs of torque. Compared to a 3.3 litre XU-1 (190hp & 200ft/lbs), it's one awesome N/A four!!!!

👍

STOCK wrote:THOSE HP FIGURES ARE AWSOME

In the old days it was under 1500lbs with driver.
It'll be fast there is no doubt about that.

I think I did some calcs above...in the nines at 137 or 138 from memory.

Houndog ·

After reading comments on the HOUNDOG I am very surprised of some of the contributors
accuracy especially grogy-9/12/2008 regarding Surfer's Paradise. That date was December 1984
& the car's first attempt on an ANDRA track. It had no wheelie bars & consequently caused some anxious moments.
It felt like it was on its way backwards,I was a lot younger then & hastily avoided that with quick throttle release!!The car is almost completed & we are working on obtaining air support for the intake system & expect total completion date to be between 2-3 weeks.
The relative ANDRA requirements are near finalised. The majority of the engine parts have been handmade & are unobtainable commercially.
Camshaft, cylinders, manifolds, throttle bodies, throttle plates, throttle shafts only represent a small content of this machining to produce this engine.
When I get a moment I will post the photo on the site that somebody had clicked at the Surfer's event of Houndog on its way up !!

dangerous ·

Welcome to the forum Ross.
You will notice that this can be a very friendly family,
and your enthusiasm will increase dramatically when you realize how interested everyone is
in your come-back as well as your important place in vw History.
DB.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

always an honour to share this forum with one of the legends of VW drag racing in years gone by....

not to mention looking forward to seeing your car Ross in the flesh on the track soon.....

Houndog ·

Thank you for your wlecome. The engine is so strong & dyno proven .If the gearbox can match
Ithe engine I will be happy.Transmission componentry has been all renewed except the gearcase+3rd
which are still serviceable.Major ratio changes have been made to be more compatible with the engine.
Providing the transmission can cut the fat I guess fun will be had.Thank you all for your patience as
running this business & re-inventing the wheel with a custom made engine is no short project..
We now near have the finished goods. The tricks of nearly 40 years of being a vw mechanic has certainly
been applied to the high stress/load areas within the gearbox. There are 2 critical factors in making a differential
live, firstly you have to prevent the pinion from retreating & the crownwheel from escaping. When these
components shift mainly from flexing parts the tooth contact minimises & the ring/pinion end up like a plucked chook..
this is the major area that has been extensively modified.

matberry ·

Welcome Ross and a huge thankyou for sharing your experience, hope fully we can squeeze alot more out of you once you add this forum to your vw addiction.

Good luck with Houndog revisited, cant wait to see you on the track.👍👍

STOCK ·

YEH WHAT MATT SAID😂😂

Houndog ·

Dear Matt & Stock..thank you.Over the years of running this car I have had some of the most enjoyable
experiences with racers & racing.I used to love the staging lanes when guys would withdraw their V8
cars..toranas with 350 Chevs & the like .Pull them aside to do something or other so they were not paired up
with "THE DOG"..The 10.71 that it had back then was not far off the SSCC record of Jeff.Watson who
was running an FJ20 turbo Nissan engine in a sprite for a 10.79....it of course these days is quite surpassed
by the turbo category.VW Canberra sponsored the car to run in Oct.88 at Queanbeyan after towing there it got
rained out & resechuduled for Mar.89.On this date the car was paired up against a VW beetle with 350 Chev,Powerglide &
9" Ford diff. The engine was mounted under the front bonnet on a Torana front end....it could only hold my 4 cylinder for
the length of my first gear...back then I was doing 11.4's & the Chev was doing low 12s.Regrettably for the opposition
he suffered 3 straight losses. In the week prior this event I had overhauled the engine & gearbox & had towed it away
untested/unstarted.A small adjustment was required on the metering barrel. When work is done on motor vehicles whether
race cars or runabouts always do it 3 times...twice by hand & finally by vision..this guarantees & minimises any errors.
twice with your hands & finally with your eyes.

matberry ·

Cheers Ross, I hope we can share some racing stories. I think that is what is so special about volkswagens, we dont seem to mind having a laugh and comparing notes etc, so what if we are racing, if we help each other out it's all the more fun.
Your coments above about car preparation remind me of a car we built in the mid 90's for a client racing the targa Tasmania. Due to the mad rush of getting a car built with a never before tried engine combo, custom building everything etc etc, the owner/driver had hardly turned a wheel until unloading in Tassie. Well he went on to win his class....preparation, quality workmanshipand components is the key.

Houndog ·

This is the Chev/VW race-Queanbeyan-1989

vw54 ·

Ross

I think i ended up racing you at the Canberra drags in my 36hp Oval in 1989

i just remember a red flash going past LOL

Houndog ·

You are definitely destined to have fun with a vw on a drag strip.Dave I can remember your 36-Judson unit with its
consistent times. To Dave Butler, yourself & quite a few of my mates who have lent on me to get back out there which
provided me with sufficient incentive to reproject the car I must thank ....it has been an exciting development journey with no regrets.
I did not wish to rerun it in its 10.71 form as that would have lacked some excitement. The 2440 engine that was used at
Canberra in 1989 was bought off me by Henry Spicak. The DOG not long after that event had the back regrafted with a fabricated split
window & a total new 2570 combination that you have seen at ORAN PARK when you were running in 1992.

l

hellbugged ·

yep some of us were truely just kids when houndog was already developing it ledgendary status.........i still remeber it and can honestly say it has been an inspiration........

some video here of 1992 with houndog right at the very end of the footage (thanx to Dave Becker)

Houndog ·

Dear Daimo...I was always enthralled with Peter Keegan & the "CAMEL FILTER" VW which later went on
to produce 10.2 @ 135mph.I visited Peter at Orange to have a look at this unit in 1974..little did I know
then that I would be down his path some stage later.Camel filters if you do not know where cigarettes
in a soft pack just painted like the side of his sponsored car...now I am showing my age.Thank you for the
Oran Park footage.I remember running Peter's car during that day his hillclimb unit not the Camel as it had
long gone.Dangerous Dave of course now owns it.Pete's car was then a supercharged 2 litre & The Dog was
near 2.6 n/a.Oran Park was the over 850 ft not an eighth of 660 ft.My slip showed 7.91 for the win @ 110 mph
& Pete's was 8.014 @ 114mph...he certainly would have given me some had it been 20 years sooner !!!!
I still communicate with Peter to whom I respect deeply...his car would have gone harder if he had the clutches &
drive gear that one can obtain these days. His transmission was basically stock excepting ratio changes in the top gears.
Owing to the fragility of the underengineered standard parts to compete with 2.2 litres of high pressurised (26lb)
supercharging mildness had to be adopted on the launches.

Houndog ·

In my last post subject whereby I mentioned his car would have gone harder if he had the clutches & drive gear..
I was referring to his old Camel unit

Houndog ·

After some searching regarding a post by Grogy on 9/12/2008. I unearthed an old photo captured by someone unknown who forwarded the photo onto me some 24 years ago..This is the start of the subject wheelstand at Surfer's old track at Nerang when the car was first put on an ANDRA track & the first confrontation with a Christmas tree apart from Santa. This was the only fright that the car had given me in its racing career as it appeared that it was going to go over backwards. It certainly felt like it was 1 & 1/2 to 2 metres up..another 2/10ths of a second would have made a far better picture.Note the lack of anti-rotation protection, thre baja look (lighter & ease of maintenance)the white pool hose used as breather tubing, the unchopped look, full aluminium roll cage, ram tubes unfilterd & exposed to anything around going in...fortunately that never happened although the dirt return road provided me with more concern.Note the excessive traction compound that had been used by a funny car pass previously. After a bit more experience I improved on the tree & this is the only demoralising shot I have of a V8 ever in front of it....wheelie bars where of course fitted to it near before the engine had cooled down after returning home !!!!

dangerous ·

Where is the picture Ross????
It may be over the size limit to post
Send it to me and I will down size it for you.

Like this?

Houndog ·

Picture here:

Houndog ·

Dear Dangerour Dave...Had a bit of trouble doing the attchment to the words but later overcome that problem hence my shot & your shot are out of order..My advice when you get that far up in the air would have been to forget taking the dog for regular walks or put Rocket Rod in it as I think he eats lots of pies !!!!!

grogy ·

hi, u prolly dont remember , but that day at surfers, i was running my yellow manx, and my friend was running his black bug, and yes i can relate to being young then also. i lookin forward to seeing you bug in action again. i can remember clearly your big wheelie when u front wheels went down just on the edge of the grass, a real crowd favourite. maybe u can do a bigger one if u got more horsepower now.............. regards grogy

Houndog ·

Dear Grogy...I must say it was a ride that I cannot erase & find it overwhelming that a continued enthusiast was present on the day.To be truthful I thought it was going to land on the safety fence after the DOG screwed itself sideways whilst in the air.. I was looking somewhere about the milky way !! I was that naive about ANDRA procedure back then (first time out under ANDRA)that because the car was unfriendly with me I saddled up straight away for a re-run.....yes it was in the eliminations !!! You younger blokes have to keep an eye on me shortly as there might be some control tips I may need that have been forgotten.Re your question about doing bigger wheelstands.. have heightened 1st & 2nd gears to reduce torque supply to the differential as well as reducing final drive punishment I will need to steer it at some point. The new engine produces nearly 60 more foot lbs & near 100 more horsepower than before & consequently has bags to spare to get this unit mobile. The car with me in it is under 1500lbs.When the car goes into 3rd at about 130kph the engine to pick up the bottom of 3rd returns to 6,400rpm on the pick up of the cam.At that point the engine is producing 300 of its 316hp...this will provide steering difficulty with wheelstanding strength. The one point about torque reaction is that when objects pivot around their axis they are not going forward.I will go through some more shots of this day as some where taken by my crew on other vehicles..hopefully yours will be their..who was driving the black bug? Remember it is not engine power that makes people its the respect provided to the person that shouts first after the racing when we are safely gathered together...ps At that meet I remember Tony Harrington running a V8 Corolla Sprinter
auto running consistent 10.12s on 10.11 dial in.Gary Phillips had the "seaworld magic" funny car there also.

vassy66T1 ·

The late 70's through to mid 80's at Surfers were the time when my family (Mum and Dad and the 3 sons) fell in love with drag racing. I was a young teenage pup at the beginning of that time. Still remember seeing Jim Read do the first sub 6 sec pass in Oz. Wish I had seen your car Ross as I had a beetle (even back then) and loved it but no one where I lived had any idea how you could make them go fast. The work on your engine is just magnificent. What have you changed in suspension or other to help with hooking up all the extra power? Look forward to seeing it.
Marcus

Houndog ·

Dear Marcus...this vehicle previously had near no rear suspension except minor upward movement
to compressed bump stop rubbers. The rear has now been made totally solid...something I wished
to try especially with a swing axle.It guarantees you a perfect track contact patch as there are no angle
changes & wheelie bar height stays aligned.Everything is in the rear of the car to maximise tyre downforce.
Tyre pressure is extremely critical here. The front suspension's upward movement has been restricted so
the vehicle on take off will not let the body wind up to gain momentum then to lift the front end.It has to
lift the front end weight almost immediately. The way tracks are prepared these days traction especially with
rear end configurations is fairly well optimised. You mentioned looking forward to seeing it I just hope that it is
as easy to drive as what it is to look at it go by !!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Any idea Ross as to when it might be hitting the track. And if it is in Qld i want to make sure I am there with camera ready....

grogy ·

hi, maybe u need trainer wheels to stop it from goin the wrong way, hahha, the black super bug called madness , was grant mills, he had the ssc record for a while at 11.6. regards grogy

Houndog ·

Rod (Rocket)Penrose informed me today that he is going to fit a rear vision mirror to his drag car to keep an eye on the DOG & for me
to paint the name Houndog backwards so he can properly read it.I feel that there are at least two avenues of options for me to take
here either ....fit a tow bar to my unit so he is at least guaranteed a respectable pass or deploy my 'chute at half track & let him catch
up a bit....although his new combination will be nitrous assisted.I didn't bother about reminding him about a 351 GT Falcon with nitrous
that I had to give .85 second start once at Willowbank & the Ford was runner up.We need to get him off the pies & get him on a
pushbike then wouldn' have to worry about chasing anymore horsepower......................
I think he may have been sniffing the contents of that new NOS bottle as his comments appear funny & a bit out of
character.

Sounds like it's on❗

Can't wait to see this.

Ross you have to be going to Portland???

Hi Grogy

Here's some pics that might bring back some memories!
Can't wait to see Hounddog back in action too!

CP

BeetleJuice ·

NOt meaning to hijack thread..But I reckon I have pics of the dog at Surfers too somewhere!

matberry ·

I have to admit to never seeing the dog run but as for wheelies in days gone by....how's this one?

Houndog ·

Dear gentleman thanks for posting the Surfer's shots..I now recall those two cars Grogy. Matt I would love to be able to go to Portland. At the moment we are currently fabricating fibreglass intake scoops to sit on top of the rear guards to induce air into the muzzles of the Dog.Being all custom manufacture there is no short cut..or quick buy parts. The area where the induction is,is near straight behind the outside of the rear wheels within the confinements of the rear guards. This location provides a huge low low pressure area at speed. The massive air intakes that feed this unit are still confined under the mudguards to retain some form of external originality excepting the air feed appearance.I will ring Rocket Rod to receive anxious results on Portland...you guys just keep an eye on him not so much as in the pits or on the track but his canteen habits...I know definitely that the car will be at the Willowbank Winters-June & maybe prior that in early May for another championship event scheduled there also .Sydney in March is it a compact event ???Rocket is leaning on me here..would be a good opportunity for a shakedown run & try out the towbar !!!!! Anyway at Portland look after yourselves, god luck with the racing & drive to survive especially outside the racetrack. .look after each other & have agood time.Kind regards..Ross.

humpty ·

Wow what a great read!

Awesome to see you here Ross and equally awesome to see the DOG is coming back together... When Rodney passed on the fact that you were keen to get back into it some time back, the cry's of 'more, more' from the current establishment were deafening... Your car, along with Pete's, the Krugers, Dave's, Matt's and a few others I could mention have kept us old schooler's wanting more.

Keep at it.... The DOG must rise again!

Houndog ·

Dear Humpty...This forum has certainly rekindled past observations by yourselves
that I never knew existed in the previous running of this car.As it has been out of
circulation for quite some time it surprises me that you guys have such a long &
maintained interest in the vw scene. The forum has certainly provided value to be
able to speak to some of you people. My next challenge is getting Rocket Rod on
track but that might take me more than the 5 years of engine development that I have
put in here !!!!!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Sport compact is on March 15th. Pete Page did mention to me he was thinking of going down to compete and maybe Rod R as well. Be good to see you out at this event Ross even if it is only for some shakedown passes. the All motor boys and girls from the Honda and Rotary ranks won't be happy to see another quick Volksy to bolster the ranks.....

Houndog ·

Dear Brennden..cannot promises this one but working hard..One of the most
exciting rewards (especially previously) about running a high powered VW with so much
engineering hidden underneath the boot lid is the initial perception of the general
public in seeing a VW on a dragstrip (which were never recognised as a powerhouse
especially in general commuting terms) & thinking what the hell does he think he is going
to do with that when it was lined up to an average turbo six or maybe a V8.My friends
amongst the crowd would hear all sorts of comments until the clutch was let out.People these
days are not so quick to pre judge us now.The problem that does exist in all categories is
competitors do not like to be made the underdogs by being hosed by VWs.. I have hardened &
offer no sympathy !!!!

learnt not to be sympathetic anymore !!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Dangerous, Pete, Rod and Morgan Smith have all earned a lot of respect from fellow competitors as they are really hard to beat(especially the ever consistent Muffin man!!)

Funny thing with All motor is the arguments between the Honda and Rotary boys over who is quicker and why!!! VW's don't even enter the argument till race day then it's a case of "oh we forgot about those guys!!"

Wow, thanks for the kind words Ross.😊

Stanley ·

I can't wait to see the 'houndog" in the flesh. Pics just don't do it justice.
I have been reading this thread daily to catch up on all the latest news. Unfortunately can't add much in the way of tech but love the old school racers and could only dream of getting my car to anything half as good as youe guys. It's all you guys who keep me motivated and can I add that in the few years I've been helping Dave out I have gained more insight than my brain can cope with. I'm sure he has had a part in anyone who races.
The days not too far away where you'll need to take your shoes off to count the field of volksies at a race meet.

Keep up the great work everyone.

Houndog ·

Dear Stanley..The car is still in good shape & the paintwork etc is A! It sits here not far from my office desk.
It has been a large effort on this upgrade of Houndog & I will be relieved when at the track. Previously when it
was doing tens a considerable amount of time went into doing that engine. After Gene/Gary Berg took 1/3 of a
second off my national record & added a few mile an hour I knew that if I ever wanted to challenge this that
a lot of homework & expense would be necessary, consequently there is a lot of internal engineering fabricated
into this which is rather unique & untried in vw racing engines..it has all worked & fortuneately when severely dyno
tested was dismantled & unscathed.I knew the 2.9 litre engine was going to be strong but was overwhelmed when it
produced 256 ft lbs of torque in its naturally aspirated trim 56 more than a GTRXU-1 6 cylinder 3.3 litre & an additional
126 more horsepower than an XU-1....that was a favorable reward that certainly offset the 5 year effort.

I must say that I would have never thought that a naturally aspirated 2.9 litre 4 would ever produce the
torque level well above a 6 cylinder 3.3 litre GTRXU-1 which had 200 ft lbs to my 256..Good luck & time
obviously on my side. Thanks for your time on comment...Ross.

There has been very few times that I have chatted to Dangerous that i haven't been able to get the answer to my VW related problem.

On the other hand I asked a question about a wife related problem and had him totally stumped !!

Houndog ·

Dear Brennden....with respect--when it's a problem with a women I think most men get stumped !!!
I have a very supportive wife although she is concerned about the parameters that I will be driving to..
Now the first tip on this forum without any spanners...to make a marriage thrive always let the women
have the last say...any word said after that is officially the beginning of a new argument !!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Like my cousin says about women..... you can't live with them and you can't kill them!!

hence why he is still single i guess.... LOL

humpty ·

Houndog wrote:... To make a marriage thrive always let the women have the last say... Any word said after that is officially the beginning of a new argument !!!!
Brilliant advise.... Thanks for that one Ross!

More to come.

reub ·

That gets me excited Dave... more I say...
Thanks for posting

dangerous ·

vassy66T1 ·

The excitement is definitely building 👍

11CAB ·

Looking good.... will we see this at VW Warwick?

I showed this pic to my wife as she is a huge Ghostbusters fan..... she cracked up

Anyone else see the ghostbusters gag?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Definately keen to see this hit the track for a somewhat of a "rebirth"

milestones54 ·

That engine is bonkers!

Houndog ·

11CAB

Sorry for the delay with an answer.

Definitely be at Warwick............ and need to be there to tow "Rocket" Rod Penrose (a.k.a. Captain Snooze) out of bed. The 'Dog with all that extra power and a heavy duty snatch strap will definitely be required, as I hear he'll be camped at the track and he always party's hard! 😁😁😁

11CAB ·

Look forward to seeing it in the flesh

matberry ·

What !!!! Rocket partying hard?? Ross you must be thinking of some other Dude, pie eating Rod is usually in bed by eight😂😂😂

OK I admit to being a dummy....So what's this Ghostbuster gag

OZ Towdster ·

Ok ,now then us dummies better stick together then , so graham whats the gag thats got mel in stiches

Houndog ·

Dear Mat..did you mean 8am ??? I talk to Rod frequently...Unlike Dangerous Dave & myself he can have big nights & lots of calories & he only has to adjust manifold pressure to compensate.Dangerous & I are either walking, dieting or bike riding to attain a reasonable power to weight ratio. Both Dangerous & myself know that if it came to a 1/4 mile 3 way challenge in joggers..we know who the front runners would be !!! The ghostbusters is in reference to the bottom picure at page 3 !!! ps Andrew & Mat..what is this about being dummies....never run yourselves down like that as there are plenty of people out there that will do it for you !!!.Regards..Ross.

RodPenrose ·

Ross , for your infomation , I have so much power that I need to keep the front wheels on the ground . I will be fitting a rear view mirror to my car now that you are going to Warwick just so I can keep an eye on how far behind you will be . I will be arriving at Warwick a day earlier , just so I can gat a good camping spot close to the canteen , ROD.

Houndog ·

Mat..bingo !!!Rocket is still up did you see the time he did the last post..10.22pm..Well Allison least whilst he is up you
must be enjoying all that respite !!! Rod we are just finishing off the last of the car a new reinforced parachute attachment. I have engineered it so it can be used as a tow hitch so I can guarantee you that decent pass. The rear vision mirror is the best innovation to your outfit...it should provide at least one beneficial feature...sufficient indication to prevent you from running over your pit crew when you back up !!! My only worry about Warwick
is the possibility of a food shortage...Rod I think it is not far to town is that right ??? All jokes aside I am looking forward to that week end & the putting of 5 & 1/2 years work on the track. So pleased to know that
Keegs (Silver fox Keegan) has continuing interest...At Castlereagh in the early seventies when that Camel car would stage all the crowd would stand up as they do to the fuellers these days...Rod unlike you & I when we go out the fair
dinkum blokes will probably wander off to the toilet & the girls will readdress their make-up...Goodnight.Ross.

11CAB ·

OZ Towdster wrote:Ok ,now then us dummies better stick together then , so graham whats the gag thats got mel in stiches
Front corner of the drivers door... "OK, so she's a dog"

RodPenrose ·

Ross , I will look for my pushbke today just in case they run out of food . Yes that's right I own a bike , I have had it for over ten years and the tyres are still like new . I will look forward to finally seeing the car run again because I didn't even own a race car when it was last on the track all of those years ago . ROD.

matberry ·

I think we all will be looking foward to see the Dog on the track again.
Sorry Rod, must just be at the track when your in the cot before the pub's are shut!!!😂

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

The only grudge match that will be better than Pagey and Westi with the "pink" saga last year will be seeing Rod and Ross doing the 1/8 on foot lol.

Houndog ·

Thanks for the humour gentleman..this forum certainly has provided much enjoyment & laughs.Success is not about speed...winning is about the the good humour & comaraderie when the cars are on the trailer in one piece as the driver !! Rod maybe you & I could have a grudge race on our pushbikes at Warwick...but after all those years you have been 2 wheel inactive hence the trainer wheels will cause you too much drag...to be fair we could do it on a dial you own basis & not heads up..Cheers Ross.

matberry ·

Go the heads up pushy race boy's.

I'd like to see that.👍👍

Rod, it's only 1/8 th mile

OZ Towdster ·

Ok , lets wind this up a notch , i'll personally put a $100 on the line for the winner to see Ross & Rod drag race on pushies .

vassy66T1 ·

To be true to the era (of the cars ... not the gentlemen concerned) and style it needs to be dragsters with a 3 speed t-bar shift and a banana seat. 🙅

OZ Towdster ·

Vassy, no offence , but you have obviosly not priced a Malvern Star Dragster of late , as 2k plus comes to mind EACH that is !!!!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I reckon penny farlings would be interesting....

Houndog ·

Do not give "Rocket Rod"too much encouragement especially with a prize purse attached. He is likely to turn up with a brand new custom made titanium 2 wheeler just made for Warwick & ditch the air cooled grudge match. His biggest challenge with him wanting push bike line honours would be what he would have to purchase for an appropriate tow vehicle..Rod-a Lincoln Continental Limmo with a chrome trailer would be the go !!! Then we could go for a lap of honour in the back of it,you could shout from the bar conveniently located near the leather seats when you present "The Royal Fitness Trophy" to me & Rod try and source one with a pie oven !!! Now Andrew Westwood is
putting up a 100 bucks for the winner so you are not working with much budget..would you split it if we did the same ET ?....I would want a back to back re-run...that wouldl test you if you haven't trained..Ross

vw54 ·

It would have to be best of 3 for the 100

Mick058 ·

another vote for a push bike race!

Houndog ·

Thanks for your support Mick...Certainly would make a good feature race.Dave B...yes need to be like Canberra
(3/1989) best of 3.Could you organise a defribulator to strap on Rocket's bike..better still I think we"ll pre-race connect it
to him.Dave you can ref the contest as the blokes he went to school with reckoned he used to fudge playing marbles in
the lunch hour..
At least if it rained we would have some entertainment support...I think I might bring a wet tyre for the rear just in case
...for a startline advantage.

RodPenrose ·

At least I've still got all my marbles , ROD.

Houndog ·

Rod............touchez !!! You won that round..now are you that sharp at the startline ??

vw54 ·

bring on the dragsters ........................... ( push bikes )

Ross i still have good reaction times

Houndog ·

Dave..it will be good to catch up with you again after all these years..I am glad you are still line sharp..
Rocket has got me wondering now about my marble content.I guess it is not that hard to find drivers !!
ps I think the pushbike derby should be a starter !!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Maybe Burchell can race too and we can see if his starts are all he talks them up to be?? Anybody else want to join in a round robin pushy race maybe sat arvo after racing finishes??? Could be some quality entertainment I think....

vassy66T1 ·

Now the pushies is something I can afford to enter and may even stand a chance 🤓

Dak-A-Tak ·

Just get those race cars in TOP shape and get out there and bluddy race !!!!

vw54 ·

Maybe Burchell can race too and we can see if his starts are all he talks them up to be??

ROSS has been training hard

Ferdinand Fastback ·

I am an elderly VW Warwick enthusiast with a standard 71 type 3 road car. I have only ever been a spectator & reallly enjoy the street parade together with the friendliness of the other owners that I have spoken to.

This forum, which I regularly read is always enjoyable & I look forward to the humour & the friendly rivalry that is often displayed. The pushbike feature race had me laughing.

I remember Hounddog years ago & I've seen Rod Penrose's car go & talked to Rod some time back at Warwick. Dak A Dak obviously doesn't appreciate the importance of good humoiur as life is not always about THE "bluddy racing".

vassy66T1 ·

Hey Ferdinand!!

Love your spirit and interest.
Dak-a-tak isn't seriously against the humour, Pete just wants to be sure that they get on with the serious stuff while they are having a joke on the side.

Looking forward to Warwick 😘

westi ·

yeh pete' got a great sense of humour ,just ask him about his pink shirt.he loves it...

sgetty ·

hey ross
its deon i havnt been on the forum for a wial and found this thread welcome!!

dangerous ·

Are you ready/running the winternationals Ross?

Dak-A-Tak ·

Not on entry list , would be crazy to enter such a big meeting untested .
Neil Penboss is running super sedan .I'm going all day Saturday.

Some more spy shots from Ross:

Ready for testing soon.

Another shot from the rear.....
Not quite sure about the significance(sp?) of the pink pram.
Perhaps Ross can fill us in.

Houndog ·

Dear Dave....the pink pram is the grandaughter's.I brought it home for a minor repair. It will be ready for Warwick as
well. I am thinking about using it in the main feature race between "Rocketman"..Rod Penrose & myself. I am undecided how much start to give him with it yet. !!!! Westi previously has mentioned-24/4/2009... about Pagey & a pink shirt...hope Pete doesn't take a liking to this pram as it is only on loan.

humpty ·

Damn.... Now that's a serious bit of kit!.... But I sure hope you don't need to replace the belt too often! (jk)😂

13bwagon ·

puck me thats some great gear !!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Looking good Ross. Talking about Warwick today at Klubfest and if everyone turns up who says they are then the top will certainly be full of some very quick cars.

My guess is that if you can't run 7.30 or quicker then you will be spectating with the rest of us which aint so bad.....

Mick058 ·

awesome! Warwick will be very good this year if all the cars turn up - so many!

Houndog ·

Dear Brennden..do you mean 7.3 secs with the pink pram?? The car used to do 6.88 to the eighth previuously..with a 100 less hp.Dangerous has calculated with air flow etc a 6.06 eighth at 113mph or 182 Ks & a 9.6 @138 to the 1/4...I am a much older pilot than before..I hope fear does not encourage me to fit an ejection seat !!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Ross the majority of the top 8 from the last 3 years have been running around the 7-7.50 mark apart from Wally Penboss and Mike Waldron who are in the 6's. My guess is this year if you aren't running well under 7.30's you aint gonna make it!!

Stanley ·

Looks great Ross.

Big fan of old school cars so I'm keen to have a good look at your work at Warwick.

cheers

Boostn ·

Nice to see this beast back Ross.
So many hours, $$$ and to not lose the passion after so long......very well done.
This baby should back into the 6's no stress, and my guess would be very consistent too.
My money is on a Dave B v's Ross final?

Houndog ·

Dear Boostn...thanks for favorable comments. We ran shy of time to have it at the Winternationals. However Willowbank will be its first outing 8/8/09
& then Warwick in October. The car is totally finished.

vassy66T1 ·

Ross that is fantastic news!!! I will be one of what I am sure will be a healthy little crowd to see this car at it's first outing. The motor configuration just blows me away. 👍

Houndog ·

Dear Marcus...thank you. The work & machining in this custom engine proved an enormous task & at no stage was I about to give in.One of my maim team members Gary Heywood witnessed the 5 & 1/2 year operation. He watched me assemble this mother, helped me take it 300Ks to the dyno, assisted on engine adapting to the dyno & of course was present whilst I modified runner lengths & tuning adjustments.Gary was also present when I dismantled/ inspected & reassembled the engine after the dyno torture..He made the rear wing, the plugs for the moulds for the air intake scoops & the air boxes. He has made variuos parts at my request whilst I have been busy running my repair shop...he is familiar with the whole deal & I am extremely grateful foir his dedication. He is a carpenter..they have slightly different tolerances to mechanics..I kept a close eye though.
Off that now..I spoke to Peter Keegan earlier tonight..Pete would be the most notorious VW drag racer 10.2 @135mph ..early 1970s.We have offered him a drive in my car or dangerous Dave Butler's (which he used to own nearly 20 years ago).Pete is a little apprehensive about doing this for fear of damage however do not expect an all out display...just enjoy a good trip down memory lane...Regards-Ross & thanks Keegs.

vw54 ·

sounds good Ross hope all goes well on the first outing at Willowbank

Houndog ·

Dear Dave...thank you.More looking forward to catching up with yourself & many others that I haven't seen in the "HOLIDAY PERIOD".

Houndog ·

Have decided to give the car some 1/8 mile shakedown passes at the Gunnedah meet-18/19th July to make sure the driver still functions...this fits in just before Willowbank of 8/9 August.Any other guys interested in participating
with the Gunnedah event??

colin ·

G,day Ross,

I have run the last few times at Gunnedah but i think i,ll give the next one a miss.

Will have to come out and see the Dog run though, been many years since a saw it run in anger.

Cheers Col

hellbugged ·

Ross, why not come to the VW dyno day with T & T at Willobank afterwards???????

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Ross we would love to have you at the Dyno Day then at the TNT afterwards at Willowbank. You will have no shortage of helpers that's for sure. I'd be happy to lend a hand myself as it has been a long time since I have seen your car run!!

If you are interested give myself or Pagey a call. Our numbers are in the first post.

cheers Brennden

Houndog ·

Dear Brennden..many thanks for your anticipated support. However the engine has been extensively dynoed & optimised.Owing to the amount of
naturally aspirated mumbo that this unit delivers I wish to conservatively restrict it to racing purposes only.If anything needs performance enhancement it is the geriatric who is going to operate it !!. Dangerous may make me some of his homemade muffins --they'll add spark..Cheers-Ross.

matberry ·

C'mon Ross, a little squirt to show off Dog's new power plant and then onto Willowbank test and tune would be perfect practise for the Warwick match up with Rocket Rod

VWFREAK ·

Dam, the new and improved Hound Dog is out to kick some serious arse.

Nice work 👍

Houndog ·

Mat,I was talking to "ROCKET"Rod last week I will know if he gives up the pies real soon he will keep
me busy at Warwick !! Although he knows he has an advantage as the heavier he gets the more turns he can give the NOS.

matberry ·

😂😂😂

Things have definately lightened up around here since you came Ross. 👍

Houndog ·

All in the process of us all having a happy time Mat.I have had a lot of enjoyment from
various responses from this forum & at the end of the day no matter how fast a car a
racer drives judge him only by the way he speaks & treats others...that is where the real value lies..Ross.
ps Dangerous Dave is one that I know that fits in this category.
pps I hope Rocketman will crash his diet soon !!!...Dave might forward some cakes down!!!

matberry ·

Houndog wrote:Dave might forward some cakes down!!!
You might need some help here, maybe your good with the guy upstairs or something, as I've been trying to get some of Dave's muffins for years.....My first and last I had to drive 5000km to get😂😂

Actually I might have to send Rodney and Alison down a package of muffns.

That's cause he is always removing his engine to fix a clutch or something LOL

Dasdubber ·

Haha....every pound counts hey!

Been lurking on this thread for a while Ross, can't wait to see "The Dog" in the flesh!

Bring on Warwick!!
Al

Houndog ·

Alan...Warwick is my main priority..I really wanted to make it last year but owing to the immense fabrication of componentry was not to be.
Update....The car now only has to have fuel in it to be a goer.Tomorrow I will crank it over to test
the starter strength.Being naturally aspirated I have used the maximum practical comp ratio for alcohol.I machined
down a 6 volt armature, fitted it to a 12 volt housing with 12 volt field coils & put 18 volts into the armature circuit.
Despite all this it was just sufficient previously & provides more energy than a hi-torque unit.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Hi ! Ross , good to see you coming to Warwick , all concerned with vw drag racing have been working hard last couple years to help our hobby and sport grow .
So new and old racer's coming back really shows we are building up to a larger events and faster cars . Top8 this year will be real tuff to get into but this makes the challege more fun ( Mr Penrose didn't qualify last year ) .
Hope all goes well in testing and I will see you on the start Line !😂

dangerous ·

1992 winternationals.

As you can see I was ahead of Ross in this photo.

Actually the truth was that Ross had run well into the tens by then,
but on this run,
he ran an 11.1 @ 120mph,
and I broke a type 1 CV joint.

Be good to race again Ross..... it's been too many years away!!!

Premature ejection? Try some VWIAGRA! 😂

Seriously top work on the Dog - great to see it still alive after all these years

Houndog ·

Dear Dave....Now don't let the truth get in the way of a good story in that photo we hadn't staged !!Jerk my memory did I win that one on your mechanical misfortune..maybe the only bit of luck I that I will ever have against you !!! I promise to be a lot fairer these days I will be the gentleman that you are & give you more start in trade off for muffins !!!
Peter....Warwick will be like a large family reunion for me.I only remember you lads as young boys, not
matured men with families. The expense & workload on this project will certainly be rewarded by the
the times that are about to unfold..Regards & anxiously awaiting Warwick.

dangerous ·

You are correct Ross,
that photo was just after the burnout....which you were about to begin.

Back in those days your burnouts were so long the smoke began to turn black.

I think you had run a best of 10.71@124 by that stage, and my best was 11.56@123.25mph,
but yes, the broken CV stopped my chances of breaking into the 10s that run.(I was dreaming😂)

It did happen though in early 1994.

Houndog ·

Dave..would you have come clean if my memory had gone ??!!!!You know how the broken cv joint stopped that 10 second pass that you were going to do..well here is how I see it....if the joint did not break fear probably would have set in !!!

dangerous ·

Yes I was going to come clean Ross,
as soon as I stopped being hypnotized by your avatar.

My old memory is getting a little fuzzy too.
After shuffling through over 400 time slips and 30 note books,
I found the correct details and have edited the info about my times above.

I was 23 years old back then.
It is surprising how 17 years can cloud the truth!!!!

Houndog ·

Dear Dave...I know that I shouldn't have previously given you my password.
Where did that avatar come from.. is that the lady you bought back from overseas that we are all led to believe that she is in training to be in your backup crew ??? Warwick will certainly provide some entertainment this year.

TopGun ·

"Dangerous" Dave,

I haven't met you yet, but I've been following this thread for some time and I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines at Warwick. I've known Ross for a number of years (in fact it was after I encouraged him to come with me to spectate at a Willowbank meeting, that he was bitten by the 'bug' - pardon the pun, to go drag racing again).

It is now over 5 years ago that Ross told me he would be racing Houndog again "in three months time". Like a fool, (and trusting what he said), I went out and bought a video camera to film him competing in the next meeting. Anyhow, It's been so long since I bought my video camera that they no longer have Betamax tapes.

Consequently, I wouldn't worry too much about the numbers Ross's been quoting, as he's got 'form'!

p.s. He's telling me he'll be giving the car a shakedown run at Gunnedah on 18 & 19th July, and want's me to come down from Brisbane to watch. Can I trust that he'll be there?

Dasdubber ·

If you do go, hope you've got a new video camera to capture the action so we can all see the houndog in action!

vw54 ·

I like that pic

Houndog ·

Dear "dangerous"....Obviously that TopGun mate of mine has not realised yet that you supplied me the
performance numbers....so its not my form on the line !!! I found out that he was the one I trusted with
with my forum password etc & now look at my greeting avatar not only that when he was in the Auto-Motion
workshop last time he looked at the Winternationals pre-entry list..did a cut/copy/paste deleted a competitor & substituted it with a Gene Berg entry..and had the hide to say when he summoned me to the computer "this Gene Berg fellow isn't he the national record holder?" My only clue to this deceit..the spelling as Burg.I will be definitely be at Gunnedah all the car needs is fuel to be added.ps TopGun (one of the original guys that lent on me real hard to reconstruct & re-race the 'DOG"will be driving down from Brisbane..I am looking forward to running the car after so much input..and if it rains on the day I will not be concerned as long as TopGun gets that new camera wet !!!

Hello Mr Top Gun,
based on your user name,
I am guessing you are related to Tom Cruise or something😂.....only a little taller I guess.
Ross assures me he will be at Gunnedah rain hail or shine,
so that camera of yours with the hubble atached to the front will get some use.
Plus, I believe that Gunnedah track is an old air strip so you should be at home....or at least at work!

The numbers Ross is quoting I gave him based on a bit of maths,
but mostly wild guessing and a whole heap of BS.
In a perfect world it may run that on a good track with good air and a clean run.
...but being that the old guy is now getting out of the old folks home,
I think he will be happy if he gets to within 1/2 second for the first few meetings,
but still worth the drive for a look.

There will be no reason to cheer me on,
I will have ross all psyched out(and I'll get a head start) not even factoring the "old guy" reaction times.

Look forward to meeting you and catching up with Ross again after all those years.
You blokes sound like good sports and have a friendly rivalry.
Should be a great event this year at Warwick.

Houndog ·

Dave..you have summed him up well..he is tall but if you drained all the BS from him the rest would fit in a shoe box !!
He is Brisbane's youngest retiree (50 or close) an ex air traffic controller & you know their poor record on aeroplace separation.Simmo (alias TopGun) has been right on my case for 5 & 1/2 years.."haven't you finished that bloody
thing yet".(.I am glad he wasn't helping) His claim to fame is that he gets out of bed unassisted & can find his way around the house, knows where the fridge & toilet are.The camera in question has an image stabilising lens fitted
& this huge camera is a substitution of his physical inadequacies I am sure of it!!
Dave you know how he wants to cheer you on only at Warwick-well during recess a good purpose for him would be to keep the pies up to "THE ROCKETMAN" so Rod gets lethargic at the lights !!!
ps Its real handy slowly closing in on 60 as I have a good excuse not to perform...my horespower should fill some of these gaps !!!

👍 WOOF WOOF!!

TopGun ·

"Dangerous" Dave,

Nah! The TopGun reference is nothing to do with aviation (nor Tom Cruise), it's a "dig' at Ross regarding a friendly shooting competition in which we compete against each other. We have a "TopGun" trophy which is currently in Ross' possession and which he refuses to pass on to me, even though I have beaten his former 'benchmark' record (and beaten it five times........ in his presence?????). Obviously his ethics when defeated are questionable, so I'd certainly suggest that you keep an eye on him at any awards ceremony where there is an opportunity for him to abscond with the winner's trophy.

Also, I don't think you'll need to psych him out at the start line for a couple of reasons. Firstly, although I haven't seen him race Houndog in the flesh, I've seen all the video footage of him competing. I don't think I saw one clean pass, and he seemed to 'bog-down' at every green light - particularly when he was up against someone running a V8. I think he's trying to prove that 'size doesn't matter', but I think his wife may have a different story.

Secondly, he's been quoting new and impressive horsepower figures that are a big improvement over what Houndog had when it last ran competitively. What Ross doesn't mention is that Houndog's power-to-weight ratio is a lot worse than before (thanks to the driver's ever increasing girth) and is why Ross has earned the moniker "Fat Rod" amongst his mates!

Cheers
TopGun

Houndog ·

Dear Dave...dont worry about the trophy table.. but if there are any homemade muffins they will be under threat !!
Do you run 10.71 @ 200Ks (in the early nineties) bogged down ???
The V8s were always a hardship especially of how much start you had to provide to them !!
Can we find a purpose for TopGun at Warwick?? He will be the fellow with the oversize camera sqatting down not
getting past page 1 of its instruction manual !!!
My original 20 year old outdated woollen racing suit still fits me unstretched & am the lightest that I have been in 20 years...Fat Rod ??---- I wonder if there is "ROCKETMAN" confusion here !!!!
The fastest TopGun has ever been is his exit speed at birth on the delivery table !!!
One valuable lesson to be learnt here..is never let anybody lower your standard to raise their hopes...now aint that the truth ??

RodPenrose ·

Ross , I am also looking forward to Warwick and to once again see the DOG { hot , hound or red } with all that extra power . With all of the extra power and all of the less driver weight , I think you will have no problem at all getting it up . The big question is how long do you think you can keep it up , because you are now a lot more mature than than the last time you raced , ROD. { THE REAL FATROD }

Houndog ·

Dear Rocketman..............very rewarding to read such a positive & informative post from you unlike TopGun
you are the one with form !!!

Houndog ·

Dear Rod.......thank you for your positive response unlike TopGun you have credibility & form.It will be
very rewarding if I can get it up & keep it up..you do mean for sub 10s don't you ??..hope it keeps straight !!
ps ..Fatrod..I think I need to focus on making sure I bring the pie oven to Warwick.

RodPenrose ·

Ross , where's the avatar ? . That didn't stay up for very long . ROD.

Houndog ·

Dear "ROCKETMAN"..Rod, TopGun knows my password etc.he set up the avatar secretly & obviously has difficulty in handling the truth about the camera
so he decides to penalise me this way & signatures me as "Deep Down I know I"m only second best"...he has probably got that right though. You would never nickname him ocean as the imbocile lacks depth !!!

Houndog ·

GUNNEDAH DRAGS 18/19 JULY....CANCELLED OWING TO QUAGMIRE OF PITS.
FINE DAYS FORECASTED SAT./SUNDAY BUT NO HEAT TO DRY OUT AREA
IN TIME..

Stanley ·

You'll just have to make the trip up to the TnT after dyno day next weekend Ross

Houndog ·

Stanley....I have entered for Willowbank 8th/9th August. No need for t&t as
engine has previously been done. Car fine--driver needs the test & tuning.

HS618 ·

Ross,
You're younger than I am so your reaction times should be better than mine - show me how good you young blokes are! (We have both been out of it for about the same time)

TopGun ·

"Dangerous" Dave,

I quote from your earlier post to me regarding Ross' credibility..... "Ross assures me he will be at Gunnedah rain hail or shine"🙅🙅🙅???????? Obviously his assurances are about as good as any politician's come election time! It's a good thing that I didn't go out and buy that new video camera just yet. I've learned the hard way, the only thing reliable about him is his unreliability (and I don't mean the car).

I've also noticed on Willowbank Raceway's web site that he's actually submitted an entry in Super sedan for the Blown Alcohol Championship round coming up next month. I don't know how he's gotten away with Houndog's entry as SSC when it should be SSCC. With all that constant hot air floating around inside Houndog's "cockpit" surely it must be classified as steam driven, or some other form of supercharging! Anyhow, it's probably a moot point as his attendance at this meeting will probably be as likely as the next sighting of the Loch Ness Monster.

dangerous ·

Hello Top Gun.
Yes it appears to be that the cancellation of that event has stopped Ross from running,
but after discussion with Ross last night,
he told me that to make ammends,
he will stand out at the track for two days, alone,
with your video camera, and film the breeze as it attempst to evapourate the quagmire from the pits.

Yes I see that ross has entered the meeting at willowbank,
and he had better damn well be there, hot air and all,
so that when he chickens out I can slot into the seat.

It will be good to meet you then.

Regards,
Dave.

TopGun ·

Dave,

Now that Houndog won't be running at Gunnedah (as promised "rain hail or shine"), you think Ross could still go out to the track and perform a community service. With all that "hot air" now going to waste, he could use some of it to help dry out the paddock.

Cheers
TG

Houndog ·

Dear Dave.....Simmo alias TopGun is dead right I did state that I would be at Gunnedah rain/hail or shine but my winning card is I didn't mention competing if it was overcast. This cancellation is so disappointing,I would have liked to put some mild time into the transmission & settled in the overhauled engine after the dyno rebuild. The car & I will have to attend Willowbank green but still "HOTDOG RED".The super sedan field at Willowbank for this meeting
at closing yesterday comprised 35 v8 super sedans of which 3 are supercharged/nitrous etc & a lonley naturally aspirated SSC entry. When I ran it at Willowbank in the nineties it too then was its first outing untried...so history has to repeat. You have probably worked this out by this Dave that TopGun wrote all the Harry Potter literature,
top qualified at compiling compositions in kindergarten, has heaps of idle time (QLD's youngest retiree) & is generally
impractical with his hands except behind close doors.
HENRY....I will not disgrace the geriatric bracket we contest !!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

July 25th Ross Test and tune with a lot of other Volksy's to keep you company!! Over 10 VW's running that night!!

tayloredvw ·

Im loving this post just for the comments. Funny stuff.

Houndog ·

Brennden....8th/9th August at Willowbank is where I will be short of company....with the 36 car super sedan field..
all 35 V8S & a lonely little VW entrant doing battle all by itself !!

Taylored....Thanks for your favorable comments...Dave & TopGun ..I value our friendship immensely.Yes we do stitch each over up a bit in the name of a little humour...Although TopGun.. he will always be the class clown & looks forward to red nose day !!!

Stanley ·

I'll have to make the effort to come along and cheer you on Ross.

Houndog ·

Stanley..."Dangerous" he said he would be there too..maybe if you bring the picnic table "MUFFIN MAN"..might bring the cakes. Thanks for the support.Ross

Stanley ·

I'm sure we won't be the only ones to come along and DB doesn't travel without a container of muffins stashed somewhere.

OZ Towdster ·

Yep will definetly be there next weekend ,as i'mm sure like said above many other VW boys will be too !!!

Houndog ·

Andrew..come down & make yourselves known when you arrive.
It will be more rewarding to have some friendly associates around to talk to in the staging lanes..rather than the enemy of 35 V8s that are sharing the super sedan field with me..Regards..Ross ps Get on to "MUFFIN MAN" & make sure he hasn't lost his recipe book.

BeetleJuice ·

Ross,I hope there will be video's ASAP!

Greg Hamer sends his regards.

FROSTY ·

Hi There,
When will be the best time over the weekend to catch "Houndog" on the track? Early rounds on Sat arvo/evening?

Houndog ·

Craig...hopefully we can get some motion footage of it & post it to this site.I think I will be rather busy inside in the steering department, gearchanging & of
course underpants changing leaving me short of hands to hold the camera !!!!
The clock is wound back a long time with Greg. His folks had a water tank business-REMAH (Hamer backwards) years ago here in Tamworth .I remember his mum Queta well my mother taught her cake decorating in the mid 60's.Say gooday to him & give him my regards..what is he up to these days?

Frosty...By the look of the competitor format my qualifying runs should happen about mid morning & finish before dark on Saturday...times are real hard to predict as oil downs/clean ups etc are unknown factors.

FROSTY ·

Thanks Ross,
Looks like I'll be at willowbank mid morning Saturday.

HI Ross

I'm sure you'll be quite busy for 9 or 10 secs! 😎
Some in-car footage would be great ! I'm sure there will be a number of Volksy supporters with camera's in hand!

Spoke to Greg this morning. I'll PM his email contact details to you.

dangerous ·

Ross rang me this morning to say that he will not be racing today at the track.
He was at the test and tune last night and said the car overpowered the chassis.

vw54 ·

test and tune last night and said the car overpowered the chassis.
So what happened there

dangerous ·

Ross will probably chime in when he gets back to Tamworth,
but he had booked to just do some 1/8 mile licence passes at the test and tune on Friday night,
and sounds like the car was wheel standing all over the place/overpowering the track,
so could not race saturday due to ANDRA not approving the cars performance testing.

I am sure Ross will clear this up or what ever,
but this is my understnding from a two minute conversation on Saturday morning.

Houndog ·

Have just got back from Willowbank. On Friday night they held a T&T to test out new new diigital readout boards.Things regrettably started off rather disappointing when after warming up the oil, starting the engine, adjusting the metering barrel & a general check from the unstarted rebuild was free of any gremlins. The car was refuelled taken to the staging lanes. When time came to restart it the electronic ignition went dead.Luckily I had a drive/shims & all the old fashioned stuff all moduled up fror a quick slip in.Fired the car & back around to the staging lanes for a the regulatory 1/8 solo pass.Owing to the freshness of the new diff I elected to by pass the water. I had felt the track & near got stuck there.Staged it & did a 5000 rpm mild launch the car has about 260 of its 316 horsepower at this point & is near to its maximum torque. It carried first gear through the air,2nd as well I got off it to ground it & gave it another jab of which it just sat hard on the wheelie bars robbing it of any ground contact to be able to point it.Plus side.. there is no waiting for it to wind out it is just a wack. The ANDRA steward was concerned for its lack of steering control. It lifts the car me & the heavy torsion bar front end instantly & effortlessly..further homework required in weight transfer dept.I am once again having fun..certainly a totally different ride from before.

OZ Towdster ·

Hi Ross ,
Missed Dave's post on Sat morning and went out to Willowbank Sat arvo expecting to see you run , but alas that was not to be , but did walk many a mile out there looking for your pits to have a chat at least .
Where were you pitted ?????????

Andrew

vw54 ·

adjust the wheel bar DOWN

Houndog ·

Dear Andrew...I spectated all Saturday.I rang Dangerous Dave early to notify him of calamity to at least save you guys any inconvenience. The car trailer which is white & enclosed was parked with the car inside about 30 metres down from the bend in the staging lanes of course on the left side.I worked all today on it running clean oil through it,adjusted valves, cleaned out all the fuel system & rechecked all the valve relief pressures in the fuel injection system.Everything is ok..I thinkthe "DOG"..may have contracted rabies certainly behaved like it !!
The ignition loss was relative to an invertor failure that provides stable voltage to the elctronic ignition. At Warwick
I have two alternatives use "FAT ROD" for ballast or drive it backwards !!! Much homework now on agenda. Will catch up with you at Warwick & many thanks for your interest.

OZ Towdster ·

Ah ,you must have been in the area near an XU1 , EH complete with bug catcha and an Emerald green XW falcon .
As i said in my ealier post , i should have read the forum to check what was going on , but was so excited to see the Dog common sence went out the window , but ya get that at 41

Boostn ·

Awesome problem to have, too much power !!!

Houndog ·

Sorry for the delay in response guys as have been busy doing DOG maintenance from weekend.

Firstly Andrew was near Tamworth people a purple SSA Ford Capri & a two tone green SST Chev-(Reece Glass who was runner up at the Winters). Warwick will certainly fill these social gaps.

Boostn..re....too much power----one can always make it heavier on the nose, its easier to adjust this way than having a shortage of grunt. After the long drive & having nothing left in my own tank at 8.50pm Friday night there was nothing much left to think with.
Launching it at 5,000 to 5,500rpm where it has 260hp was wishful handling thinking for a fresh combo. This what happens when you are knocking on the doors of 60 !!!! ps At Warwick you young blokes don't be afraid of giving the "ole fellow" some tips..
but make sure you keep an eye on "ROCKETMAN" first especially when he is at the canteen.

Stanley ·

The canteen...mmmm.....an enjoyable way to add some weight up front Ross

TopGun ·

"Dangerous" Dave,

If you remember from our last few posts on this forum, I enquired if you thought Ross would come through and actually debut Houndog at Willowbank's Blown Alcohol round....................... he fooled me again!

He's now telling me to be at Warwick in early October (rain, hail or shine - but not overcast, or night time apparently). Have you heard the fable about the boy who cried wolf?

Can you give me some guidance on this matter. You've known him a lot longer than me, and I'm totally confused as he's "done my head in".

Also, I've given up trying to but Beta video tapes and have bought a digital camcorder. Hopefully by the time I get to see Houndog race, computers will still be use!
😵😵😵

Houndog ·

Dave.....I do not know what TOPGUN is on but he was the one who took the Willowbank startline shots...with a camera.
I think the way he rambles on I think he is starting to get dementia..give him a little more time & he will forget how to use
that SLR let alone a movie unit !!!!

matberry ·

Hey Ross, all this chit chat is great, but we want some get down and dirty vw pics. Hell ... even your cool avatar has gone. I'm starting to loose interest in this thread, although I still get a laugh thinking about the pushbike drag race that you two (Dog and Fat Rod) are gonna partake in.....or did you think we had forgotten?😀😀😀

dangerous ·

Bump it back up!
What is the lates Ross?
One of my spies said you might run at Gunnedah!

Dak-A-Tak ·

Whats happening with Houndog ? Ross was at Portland couple years ago , putting his toe back in the water .
Ross we need you , out there racing that great car .
Any news . 👍
