Sorry to say, I haven't bought this great little beetle.. Main reason was that I have found another toy.. The other reason was that the sale was tricky..
Here's the story.. A guy owned it and he did a runner from the flat he was living in.. The landlady who is owed money is selling it.. The bloke told her to keep and and get what she could for it.. Trouble is no papers so you need to do a bill of sale with the landlady and then re-register.. That in itself didn't worry me as I have rego'd cars in NSW on a Stat Dec when I haven't had papers.. The problem is that the old owner (the bloke who did the runner) may still have title..
Someone out there may know more on the legality of this purchase but for me it was just too hard.. If anyone wants a crack at buying it.. just U2U me.. It is fantastic original condition and needs only a tidy to be a great runner with maybe a longer term resto project..
Rob
And (I believe) the original radio and all the right knobs on the dash

okay, it's tricky. by holding a receipt of sale from the person you buy it off you are not at risk of going to jail, HOWEVER if the original owner reports it stolen it can be confiscated from you, and you can legally take the person you bought it off to court to recover your cost. if that person has a written document stating the registered owner has given it to her to cover debts then everything is sweet, but you'll need a copy of that as well as your receipt to be totally covered.

if the landlady declaires him doing the runner to some department stating she is owed money etc and gets the go ahead she can sell the car i think well its like this in boats as my parents own a slipway and people living aboard there boats one guy didnt pay up for so long and it accumulated into $1000's owing to my parents so they did all this shit and then had an auction for the boat!?!?!?!
this isnt really helpful but yer iut can be done
cheers

road authorities are a law unto themselves so some of their rules are very different to common law. the rego papers are not proof of ownership for example, the original purchase receipt is.

AVD , Rob and that landlady you all rock! This is what it's about folk! Rob could have quite easily bought this and sold it off making heapos but he didn't , he passed it on . How good's that people!
The 61 is as solis as. only minor repairs to battery area. doors shut nice , inner/outer sills great , inner arches show little wear to the original factory paint. outer has a few small rust spots but nothing to get excited about . OE paint will come up a treat. Interior is trashed so a quick / cheap day on that is on the cards. It stops well , handbrake etc , yet to see about the motor due to a flat battery and no keys. reckon $500 will see it through rego with another $500 on making it look abit better interior wise.
This is the sort of thing you here about and rarely find. Paid half a weeks wages for it aswell , silly money!! Rob your a true gent and you know i'll slam it down and make a cool ride out of it , keys are yours when ever you want mate!
Christ 2 projects now!!

We should definately produce a "rescue" type TV show.. Little VW fanatics in hippy overalls.. blatting all over the countryside rescuing old dubs from the uncaring, unknowing and unwanting..

Heh wasnt that the car that was reported stolen on here a year or so ago- nah only kidding.. but the joke is relevant.
But to protect yourself if you are planning on a project take heaps of photos of before (preferably the bad condition). I put a bloke onto a V8 C'dore a couple of years ago for real cheap money, we drove 400klm to collect it and then started rebuilding it and the mate who bought it was spending serious money, having already a Top 10 summernats car in the garage. HOWEVER the bloke we bought it off didn't actually own it, contrary to the receipt he gave and some dodgy paperwork. As you can imagine the original owner then reported it as stolen and the vehicle was seized and returned to the original owner, as title had never passed from him to the bloke we had bought it off (which is fair enough). Luckily the original owner wasnt too bad and we were able to take the parts off it that we had put on, but my mate was still out about a grand. You can then make a complaint of fraud against the seller (the bloke we bought it from) and try and recover your money- but you have little chance of that.
I certainly dont want to rain on your parade, just letting you know that it does happen- and sadly more often with people doing runners from landlords etc than say a settled family orientated person (that is being polite)
If the vehicle was his to give away in the first place then you have no dramas and then all the best to you, am sure you will make something nice out of it.
Hope it works out well for ya..

Sure that side of things will be okay.Lady okay with Stat dec form which i'll sort out soon as. Have witnesses etc so i'll just worry about getting it looking and sounding pretty ready for rego and being my new daily driver.
Should get it home t'w so i'll be burning the midnight oil for sure!

Hi Guys I have similar experience I purchase a Beetle few years ago with no paper work if you want to register the car, go to your local Police station and tell them the story how you ended up buying this car and you need state deck from them stating that the car is not stolen then Register the car as soon is the car registered under your name the previous owner has no right to it. However I believe I saw this car in Watson’s Bay Sydney near Double Bay it’s a good looking original car, good luck on your new project…:sandrine
