i dont know if i have gone too low or whether its gonna be jsut right....
it is damn low, and am at the moment trying to get 145 rubber for the front as the current set up touches the headlight buckets.
whay you all reackon? and whos near me with a pair of 145 donuts?

twoguns ·
you can tell by the hahn light 'official measurer of men tool' as to where its at.
killakornkobb ·
looks about the height of mine.. maybe a little lower.. i'd say jack it up 2 inches front and rear.. bouncing along on bump stops gets annoying after the first week🙂
twoguns ·
and this.... the sump is inches, and i am serios about this, inches from the ground...
[Edited on 20/1/2005 by twoguns]
buzzbug ·
that is sweet
i would like my ass that low
pyr0 ·
nah its all god man as long as you dont wanna go into macca's 😉 at that height is the front beam narrowed ?
ColumBUS ·
hehe too low? never
just knock up some bash plates and youll be sweet
twoguns ·
front beam is narrowed... 2 inches. jsut need the 145s now. and no im not a big maccas visitor... lubkly burger king and mibole are a bit more understanding.
pyr0 ·
was it hard to do the front beam, im planning on doin the same treatment 4 my 62, i was thinking of running 135's on the front with 2inch's of narrowing, oh yeh with adjusters welded into the beam as well.
im doing this to another beam i have that way i can just swap it over in one go instead of having the car undriveable.
killakornkobb ·
im running 135's with the adjuster beam.. not narrowed, pretty nicley.. the rear is the un comfortable bit :/.. if you run 135's you dont REALLY need to narrow the beam unless yopur going crazy low, and you want the coppers on your ass 🙂
pyr0 ·
can you put up a pic of how low urs is ??
Unity-28 ·
Not low enough mate! Looks real good. Have you got dropped spindles on that, If not, you should prolly get some for the ride quality....N!
VWFOOL ·
not low enuff yet, just needs a dnvk sticker i reckon thatll bring it down those extra few mms.
good work mate
[Edited on 20-1-2005 by VWFOOL]
killakornkobb ·
this is my height, 135's no narrowed beam
twoguns ·
the back of mine seems lower still than that killakornkobb.
front should come neat witht he 145s. is it better for 145s or should i go 135s?
no N, i havent got spindles. jsut the adjuster narrowed fornt beam,a nd a two inner spline drop oin the back. had to go inner, as the outer was stuck solid on one side. restricted my options a bit.
pyro, i got the beam from valla last year at the swaps. fitted neat. bit of fiddling wiht the steering arms. but all sweet.
had to make a few phone calls to a mate, for suggestions but all wnet ok.
twoguns ·
now for the EMBARRISING part....
guess what i jsut did?????
killakornkobb ·
go the 145's cos you have the narrowed beam.. dosent hurt having a little more rubber on the ground 'eh? 🙂
what'd ya do?!?!
*did* ·
looking good guys!
picking up my dual adjuster beam for the black bug tomorrow, so i might as well join you down there 🙂
twoguns ·
well, i , urm, took it for a test, but i forgot to tighten the wheel nuts, on all four tyres....
front left wheel came off and went bouncing up the street... doh! and the others were almost off. had to go home and get my jack and the factory jack as weel as the wood and tools, and pry and try and put hte front wheel back on. went home quite embarresed in the end. my lady jsut looked at me and smirked.
twoguns ·
he 'did' it is nice. bit rough but i am gonna try it for a while. at least i can get in and out of my driveway, which was i was worried about.
another Q.. i seem to have a lot of play in my steering. is there something i have missed? or an adjsutment i can play with?
killakornkobb ·
the threaded rod that goes between the two front wheels can be tightened/loosened i think, which will give some play. once you have the height you want to keep, get the wheels aligned, and that play should dissapear
twoguns ·
saint, if youre still looking....
twoguns ·
the black under the car is the engine and heater tubes. i think they are about 2.5inches from the ground... TOPS!
killakornkobb ·
that is way coo🙂
my cousin's fiance' "Sumo" had his lowered like that.. just a bit lower.. he had completley removed the bump stops, and notched the spring plates, to give more play.. an idea if you wanna keep going lower🙂
twoguns ·
killakornkobb... gonna try that tomorrow.
is there a such thing as too much camber? ie gear box oil to the bearings, etc.?
this is more for jsut cruising around town and maybe a DNVK cruise or two, until i get the ute sorted.
twoguns ·
nah, i htink the back is low enuf, for sure. now jsut gotta get the front tyres. damn shame i cant get some tomorrow..... :bounce
killakornkobb ·
in my opinion, never too much camber🙂 looks so phat 🙂
i heard that Paris' beetles bearing siezed on him, because of how low they were, it restricted oil flow to them?
twoguns ·
yeah, suppose i will wait and see.
tried fitting my 5.5 rims that i had on eht bus, but they were offset wrong. so witht he camber the hit on the inside both front and rear.
so i will stick with the thinners and dress rims, me thinks.
pyr0 ·
get sealed bearings 😉 that way camber isnt a problem 😀
twoguns ·
sweet, will look into that pyro. suggestions who from?
pyr0 ·
nah sorry, i think it may have been nectar that i saw mention them, he's prolly the best person to ask about low as bug's 😉
have i mentioned your beetle is awesome as :cool
Unity-28 ·
Not me about the sealed bearings. Ive gone IRS....But Will be going back to swing axle with notched plates...So I too would like to know who does sealed bearings, If there is such a thing?
N!
WABaja ·
They just look so good SLAMMED don't they...!!!
sleeper ·
never too low, my oval isn't as low at the back i only drope it by one notch but the front is slammed, can't fit a can of coke under the car, not even a packet of cigarette......
scrap.....scrap.....scrap....
Chewy ·
Be sure to fit a skid plate.. :duh
HotRodMatt ·
Wes, don't worry about the rubber. Just cut the back of the headlight housing and weld a piece with minimum clearance for the light housing and you'll be sweet.
twoguns ·
no i need the rubber. as im about an inch or slightly less out. so the 145s would bring it down a bit more.
64vwmark ·
That beer will be getting warm now.
VWFOOL ·
now thats a fukn hoodride!
twoguns ·
the beers get rotated, dont worry about that. 😉
well i took it out for a cruise today, after trying to sort the play in the steering, and change the starter.
gotta say. it aint staying down in the basement. going to play a little and try and get a slight increar. jsut bouncing everywhere.
still cant sort the steering. has heeps of play.
is there something i am missing?
bugboymatt ·
Low and lots of camber thats the way to go !!!
ruckus ·
Hey tg. Have a look at that tyre calculator thing. My 175/65 are only a little wider than 145s and around the same height, so you may have to go 135s if you want more clearance.
i htink hte 145s should be about 30mm smaller in diameter. will double check though.
VWFREAK ·
Na looks good, thats about as low as my 65 will be.
kustomkool ·
145 will not do you are gonna have to get 135x15 or even better 125x15 or go smart car tyre 120x15
twoguns ·
bummer.i htought 145s would be a smaller diameter. pity my 195/50.15 rims and tyres from the old bus look dont fit. tey are perfect daimeter.
kustomkool ·
you will sort it out.
ruckus ·
good luck tg. I've only just sorted out my tyres after a month and a half of rubber-burning stuff ups.
twoguns ·
talking to a mate. and we are going to reset the centres on my 5.5s to cope with the front.a nd then set it on 195/50 rubber up front and 205/60on the back. and see how that goes...
twoguns ·
man am i sooo pisssed off and dissappointed...
today i managed to sort the steering out and get it all tight. had a bit of a play around and then thought, 'sweet.. lets go for a quick spin and see how it is'. so i hope in back out on to the street and get stopped by the red light not 50m from my house. sitting there with a big grin thinking this should be good, when all of a sudden a cop car pulls up beside me. starts looking at my bug and as the lights go green i wait a second to see if they will go, but no they wait... so i move off thru the intersection, only to have em fall in behind and flash their big tough blue light.
i pull over not 100m from my house, and get out. they climb out of their big shinny poolicce car, and start looking around my grubby little bug. now when i say grubby i mean it. big greasy paw prints everywhere and tools in the cabin.
well the bloke comes over and says 'so what ya up to...' i reply 'jsut about to test drive it, ive been doing some tinkering. jsut tryign to sort a few things out'
he goes yep sure looks like it. his mate trying to look under the back. pops his head up and goes 'what on', 'its pretty damn low'.
after a bit of discussion, mostly by them. i had to take it straight round teh bloke and back into the garage. got threatened with a defect if i dont raise it up. and problem being they are locals,a nd this is a smallish town. they both know bus80y.
can you believe that. not two minutes and done for.
anyway i have now raised it about 2 inchs more. bummer really, but gotta say, the first 'very brief' drive it was a bit rought to handle but now it does feel a bit smoother.
nicko ·
You reckon they would have better things to do like finding whose been lobbing rocks at purfleet
twoguns ·
jsut couldnt believe it htough. jsut real bad timing... and thinking about it, i shouldve taken a bit of time and cleaned to grease prints off.
Fossil ·
hey loose nuts - keep em tight in the future:P
twoguns ·
old news..

That looks mad. How adventurous are you feeling, could always install bags or hydros?
As for the bearings on swingaxle cars... The bearings take oil from the trans through the axle tubes. Really good, simple and effective design. However it doesn't work when your axles are pointing up at an angle, unless ofcourse you want to corner really hard and fast, but in a swingaxle car though 😉
Starbug ·
i guess with the school holidays being over and everything they didnt have any teenagers in their dads WRX to bust. Thats some really harsh luck!!
twoguns ·
starbuggy... s'pose its not as bad as your bumper. i didnt break anything. hope you have it sorted.
overall i think they were kinda impressed, and certainly liked it. they like my splitter. i think that if it was cleaner i mighta *innocent look here* got away with it.
so in a few weeks i might play with it again, but for now its pretty good.
[Edited on 28/1/2005 by twoguns]
pyr0 ·
come on it was only a warning 😉 clean it up and dump her back down :P when they metion it just say yeah it is higher then b4, that way you'll get ANOTHER warning :sandrinen after that its up to you.
whats the penalty 4 a defect notice in regards to ride height ? (wheres the rice boyz when ya need em LMAO )
twoguns ·
thats my plan. i will leave it for a few days or so, and then change it again. defect means blue slip inspection, so it opens up other problems.
pyr0 ·
ooo that sucks badly.................on that note i will be avoiding defects like the plague in my beetle, prolly sumtin to do wid me skipping engineer reports on the narrowed beam im goin to install 😉 (thats until i can afford it)
i know!!!!!! paint it and say it a different car LMAO
twoguns ·
got he same narrowed beam as you want, 😉.
also i got heaps of mattblack if it comes to the crunch... thata fool em...:duh
Special Air Service ·
very keen driving the streets of taree that low to the ground, my beetle is about 2 inches lower than stock at the front and Ive dragged the front beam on humps and shit on victoria street. keen but cool hope to see it getting around.
