BenettonVW ·

There is one for sale locally, not on the forum, for $800 but it has a dropped valve. By the time you put a new motor in for no dramas when away from home and rego/rwc you might be up for 3 or 4 grand, but a very reliable car.

U2U for further info.

I am in Boambee, near Coffs Harbour in NSW. I am willing to pay about $2000 🙂

barls ·

I'll assume this will be your first car, and unfortunately that kind of money will not buy you anything good.🙂

I bought my first for 5000 when I was 16 and my second for 7000 8 months later. You should expect to pay alot of money for mishaps (my first cars engine almost killed itself - 1000 to fix, and the second needed new brakes and clutch tube - 1500. both happened within three months of purchase) and regular (every 6 - 8 weeks) services. Buying a cheap bug will almost garauntee that you will pay more than you bought it for fixing it up and keeping it road worthy.

Just be cautious, and If you don't have the money to sustain a VW, then don't even bother. I don't want to be negative, but I've had to spend more money than what I would have liked, and Im sure you will to, and you should be aware that you are taking a risky action.

sax ·

$2000 should get you something worth owning, but you will have to find somebody to fix it for you if anything goes wrong. Proper VW mechanics charge plenty but non VW mechanics charge the same and usually stuff it up due to ignorance or their attitude that vw's are all old shitboxes.

Try for a superbeetle, not as popular among the purists and are usually cheaper. Byronbugs sounds like its worth checking out.

sax ·

Stay away from anything with engine mods or bodgy backyard paint jobs if you can. Do you have anybody who can go with you to check out possible options? It is a minefield out there but well worth the hassle because beetle ownership is the path to true automotive enlightenment.

I don't know, I only paid $800 for mine.

wrecker67 ·

hey sax, whats wrong with the back yard work,so you saying my bug for $2500 is a backyard bodge....not everyone can go pay 3 to 4k just for paint, then the same for a motor rebuild,,,,

anyway i have a 62 with a 1835 motor in good condition for sale, its in the for sale section....
make your own mind up...
cheers........
ps try find a good bug in a dealer ship cheap,
i think most bugs on here have had a person that loves the things, and have most likely spent some money on fixing them right....

Did I specifically say anything about your beetle?
But if the cap fits......

Backyard and bodgy are not always one and the same,
but to a newbie it's a minefield that needs to be negotiated carefully.

Some people will paint over rust or do other dodgy shit with the mechanicals while others (like your good self) will do a much more professional job.

My take on the whole thing is for a newbie especially a povo uni student to go for something as standard and honest as possible. Just easier in the long run.
It's not like we are talking about ultra rare vehicles that are not available in good shape, many many beetles for sale at the right money if you look hard enough.

As far as "bodgy backyard" jobs go, I'm doing one myself as we speak. Short cuts everywhere but It's never to be sold because I dont want anybody else being disappointed down the track because I did it real cheap.

wrecker67 ·

mate im not concerned,i know my work, but i have worked for a few car yards, you should see the way the car yards want the cars ready for sale,as long as it looks good they dont care how you do it,,just do it.......
so i guess it works both ways
and with my one send nrma around for a inspection,,mate not hideing anything,if you seen jasons red and white one, mate i painted that 6 years ago,,still looking good, and it was done right where you were standing the other day, just no covers....
i know there is dodgy cars out there, they are 30 plus years old,,$2,000 will buy one,but it will need work,,,

anyway .....
cheers.......

sax good luck with the backyard job...........

BJ ·

I've got a 73 standard bug and will send you an email with full details and photos. Its a good honest vehicle.

BJ

Could work something out with delivering.

DIY-DUB ·

look in the papers/ trading post, i got mine 4 2g a while back and its still going ok, all u gotta do is look after it

type_one ·

Yeah if your new to the scene go for something that is relatively standard though. You'd be hard pressed to find a 100% original car these days. Standard is easy to work on and especially teach yourself the basic of VW ownership. Then again something that seems standard to the naked eye can have many hidden things. We are talking 30 plus year old cars.

Don't be scared off the so called backyard cars. Just do your research as with any car. Most people on here will have good cars for sale. Especially your regualrs. You can tell them by the stars beside their names. They certainly don't want bad feedback or reputation on here and most will be brutally honest about their cars. Go see a few they will even be so kind as to show you what to look for even if you aren't interested in their particular car. Hell you might even find yourself retuning to by the car after seeing some others out there.

Don't be scared off big motors though if you find a nice car for a good price. There are bargains to be had for sure. Research. You might be passing up the deal of the century. Big motors are not cheap to biuld. But can normally be had for less than the cost to biuld when bought in a complete car.

My strongest advice is not to buy from a car dealer. They have no idea about VW's and just want them off their lot. Make em pretty and get rid of em.

Also don't be fooled into thinking that a VW shop will be selling you a good car either. Research it. I know a VW shop close to me who does heaps of short cuts to sell cars. Bog, half baked repairs and paint, and usually over priced. I feel sorry for people who buy these cars. But i am not working there and really it is not my business. All i can say is i am sure the dodgey stuff eventually shows itself when it is way too late and you have been had. I even learnt from experince with the same person. Pretty does not equal quality.

I have personally seen this so called professionl vw mechanic buy pistons out of a burnt out kombi, (and by that i mean the motor literally melted around the crank etc) hit them with and angle grinder (yes angle grinder ) and then put them in a customers cars. Now how the hell would you as the customer be aware of that.

As a back yardy myself. I would never ever do something like that . At the end of the day I don't want someone else buying my problems.

Hell with my cars you might think i am trying not to sell it. But i'd rather sell it honestly so you can't come back and say i conned you.

Make a judgement call and as with everything ask yourself is this person trying to rip me off.

Don't be fooled into thinking that someone with a vw either is an expert. Hell some of these people can't even change a spark plug. They think they know stuff but don't. Again judgement call. Actually some of these people are the ones being ripped off for basic services.

Good luck with buying and take someone if you can with you that knows VW's. Not just normal cars as these are not normal cars. They are now cult cars.

ColumBUS ·

i think we scared her off...

come back precious come back!! 😎

helbus ·

I went with one of my wifes friends to look at a quite a few beetles until we finally found one that had a good solid motor, gearbox and mechanicals with a fairly original paintjob, no rust, few small parking dents and it all worked well.

It was a 1976 Superbug and cost $2800. That was three years ago and the only majorthing she has had to do to it is replace steering box, replace alternator and fix wiring for horn in steering column.

butidontunderstand ·

I'm still here! I have phoned the lady from Byron Bay and am being emailed photos of her beetle tommorow and I'm also looking forward to an email from BJ. I don't get scared that easy guys!!

butidontunderstand ·

I will be taking my dad with me to look at the beetles, he has a kombi and he likes VW's too. He told me he would buy me a car as long as it was a Volkswagen so Im happy 🙂

wrecker67 ·

good luck with the buy,,,,,,
cheers......

ColumBUS ·

hold him to his word

2005 golf gti... sell it and buy 1000 beetles!

Freddie Fender ·

The joy of owning a VW is doing it up, dong the job properly or if you cant do it then get someone else to do it. I love the Beetles, they are different, quirky and full of character. I've just finished my Beetle and now looking for a Kombi. Don't really know why either......anyone with a Waterbottle?

When buying an older car, there will be problems, it is the nature of buying used vehicles. Don't let it stress you too much, mechanical issues can be fixed and with Beetles usually very cheaply. Go with you're gut instinct when buying a car, you will be able to tell whether the car is honest or not. Also remember that when you pay for the car and sign the receipt, all mechanical problems are now your responsibility.

vwtyp2 ·

hey, my sister is selling hers.
it's a '64 ish.
1600cc engine and 12 volt.
it's pink.
it's in Adelaide.
it's $1200.

butidontunderstand ·

Happy V Dubbin'

butidontunderstand ·

Hey, Ive been looking around an Ive decided I will spend about $3500. Does anyone have one?

sax ·

Good chance of you finding something really good for that money.

As said before, stay away from car yards, they are not to be trusted.

You need to decide if you want something pre 68 which some believe offer better collectability and resale or something later which has some more modern options like disc brakes etc.

Dont get too hung up on engine size just yet but at least get a 1300 with a 12 volt conversion. This will let you run a stereo and decent lights.

We scored a lovely original 67 for $4K which is top dollar for that car but
you get what you pay for.

The problem with buying good cheap cars is that the best ones are often in Adelaide, Melbourne, or beyond. Better value than Sydney at any rate.

Good luck, ask lotsa questions here and keep an eye on the for sales here as well. You will do well for $3500 if you get it right.
