Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on early bug blades on later model bugs? Am considering doing this to the '71 but not sure.

Hi Ruckus,
Im not 100% sure but I think that the early blade bumpers are shorter and more curved tha later model ones.
You could get early fenders and early tail lights to get around the problem..

I like the later model bugs to look like later model ones. Dont really like it when I see one with early model fenders, lights and stuff. Never looks right. If it's a late model one I think it looks good to celebrate that fact.

Screw people's opinions. It doesn't matter if Che or anyone else doesn't like it. If YOU want to do it GO AHEAD and do it.
I think the one above looks great with blades. It still has the late fenders, lights etc. Probably looks better with blades than the late style bumpers actually.
As matt said, do your car how you want to. Not how others want to. 🙂
HotRodMatt ·
Do what you want but do it well!
If you can't do it yourself, ask around.
The only thing that can be done that is tuly is shit is not making an effort. We see plenty of that - supercheap auto cars, no thought or effort slick on stuff.
Is your '71 a standard or strut model?
The blades might be too short if it's a strut car...
ruckus ·
Nah its a standard, that's why I was considering it. Akean1 you couldn't have got a closer match to my car unless you found a standard with non-detailed 914s. Thanks mate, I'll keep that photo as a reference :thumb

I was thinkin' of this too but now am chasing up some over riders for a late bar.
Starbug ·
did '68 bugs have blade bumpers? hope to put some on mine😀
akean1 ·
hey robnjo , ive got some over riders, this is kindof a tease, im putting a W decklid on, thinking it might not open with the super bumper. if it doesnt ill have a full good chrome bumper with 2 over riders in top nick for sale

hey akean1, I might sneek over your joint and glue ya deck-lid shut then:thumb
akean1 ·
you'll need a lot of glue. oh, and youll have to find the lid

Hi
You can use the bumper brackets from a 75 or 76 bug, they are the easists brakets to use.

he starbuggy, i dont think 68's had blades (could be wrong), but dont let that stop you puting em on if you like the idea:rudolf

The probelm mouting blades on a late model car is the space between the mounts. The early one mounts through the front valance panel and the later mounts throught the Guards. This is your problem. The actual space between where it mounts on the bumpers are different.
But all that is solved now the a new bracket that mounts in your late model spot but comes out and bends around into the early style bumoper mounting position. Looks factory.
Check out the overseas mags for points of sale as this is where i saw them. Bloody great idea.
akean1 ·
i was thinking of leaving the late brackets on, and making holes in the old bumper to match. will this work?
E ·
No, 68's didn't come with blades sbuggy, but do it anyway, actually, HAVE TWO
ruckus ·
yeah you can get the brackets on the samba and ebay etc. That's what got me thinking. and seeing Mulk's super a while ago.

there is nothing wrong with making a late bug look like an early bug,its when you try make a late bug look new thats when its a problem.
