My highlight was standing next to my car at full song , it was simply awesome! Also, getting to drive Keiths 2387cc up the street a couple of times, I want a stroker crank!!!!!!!

Jak

PS can the guys that got any video footage please email me so that I can arrange a copy.

PPS I will post all the pics on Monday

Che Castro 路

yes a very fun day! nice to meet people there. Too bad Richard didn't make it in time with the 2.4 turbo bug probably would've mopped up 馃榾

Quickbug 路

Some good figures. 馃榾
Totally 馃槧:cussing:cry that i couldnt be there!

speedster356 路

Great stuff guys, I had a great time........ up until when I got shunted in the rear on the way home on P road馃槧
Oh well, shite happens.
Off to the fibreglass shop we go.

Things I need to do....
1. Get the air/fuel ratio from 9/1!!! to something reasonable!!!
2. Get the 1916 in the Speedster.
3. Do that again.......
:thumb
Got some footage so will let ya know when its up on the web.

XXX-1.8T 路

Nice meeting u guys and hopefully i see u guys at the Bulli show with shazza my VW (yes i do have one guys 馃槈 )

Shame what happened to the 550 Pete (damn i love ur cars)

Thanx for the good day guys:thumb

Any more pics damn i loved the grey Oval :bounce

amazer 路

hey cool pic of my kombi. If I can make 69hp through the front wheels imagine what I can do next time with the rear wheels.

bad luck about the shunting. Its a lesson learnt though. Come to the pub next time and you wont be at that spot at that time.
:beer

Bizarre 路

Yep GREAT DAY

amazer 路

AF ratio??? my AF curve is steeper than my HP curve!

and away we go!

That was the first frigging thing I thought !!!!!!!

speedster356 路

my lb/hp = 3.77
my kg/kw = 9.07

any others out there?

amazer 路

you win the drags mate. I got 24kg/kw assuming a kombi is 1280 kg like the rego papers say. It was enough to hold out the wanker in a corolla on mt ousley though.

jakriz 路

I saw Richard with the Turbo beetle just coming out of SAS when I drove up Silverwater road on the way home. just missed out. We ended up standing on the side of the road talking for another 1.5 hours!!!
The turbo was only running 8 pounds boost instead of the 15 pounds that it should be running but when we took off together it didn't seem to be slowing it down at all!!!!!!!
Jak

Bizarre 路

1974 L Bug

1918lbs / 61.1 HP = 31.4 lbs / hp
904 kgs / 46 kW = 19.7 kgs / kW

Pete - i think you might need to do your lbs/hp again 馃槈

yeah - just had a beer with Rich. Spent the arvo driving the kids up and down the street 馃榾

Bizarre 路

just looking at my manual
Stock was 60 hp (yeah yeah NOT rear wheel ponies) at 4400

Now i was flat lining at just short of 120 km/hr
My manual says 3rd is 1.26:1 and 22.3km/hr per 1000 rpm. So i was making top power at 5,380 revs ...... i'm happy.

Just to check though... the box i have is a dual side plate. Is this a 4.125 final drive box? or a 3.88?
I also have a single sided box in the garage, what is tha box?

speedster356 路

oops...14.89 lbs / hp
馃榾
If only I'd used my 14.89 lbs / hp to get out of the way of the Toyota driver with Coke bottle bottoms for glasses.

was probably too busy trying to work out what it is, to work out that whatever it is, it's stopped.

if that makes any sense to you at all. (I know what im talking about even if noone else does)

speedster356 路

I know what ya saying......
Listen to this...we were stopped at the lights, I was in front of MR TOYOTA going straight ahead. The right turning lane light went 2 green beside us, and he hits the gas. He said he was adjusting his mirror at the time and got a bit confused!!!

amazer 路

mine is better. the person who ran up the back of me tried to say it was both our faults for trying to run the red light. Only I had already stoppped for the red light.

the always have dark hair n the wrong shaped eyes. the same one hit my smoothieeee last September.

Jak what happened to Dick couldt he get outta bed.

Sorry i didnt make it i had to R n R a Kombi engine

cool
good to read some info and comparisons between the various combos and find it easier to beleive than the yank (tossers) magazines. are all of these cars driven daily?
can t wait til i get a hot 4 to compare to all you lucky bastards 馃檪

the 1500 is not exactly a tire shredder.

how come jakriz is making 90 and ct 76? can i get some more details on engine configs, carbs, cam etc? i thought the 1916 would be making more?
keiths car sounds like a ball tearer!

lugnuts 路

Hijak,my scorecard says 26.2hp yours says 33.1 what gives,Michael M (lugnuts).Couldnt make it to the boozer way past my sleepytime.(nightshift).seeya.

jakriz 路

Sorry Mike, but I'm posative that it was 33.1, I even remember talking about it with the other guys that were standing there as well. I think that they have accidently printed your first run, not your second.
Dino, Rich didn't put it on the dyno since they had shut up shop after we had left.
Jak

lugnuts 路

No problem thats good news i just got a power increase of 26% for sfa, looking at the figures looks like CT is going to have some serious competition this year 90.4hp,very healthy.seeya.Mick.:thumb

XXX-1.8T 路

My mate reckons that cos SAS had the dyno on Shootout mode it adds 10% to the dyno figure and they should of had it on normal mode

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Also my car weighs 1150kgs?

So how are ur calculations working and what are u calculating?

Che Castro 路

yeah i had a ride in the turbo bug after... man i almost shat myself when we went full ball down the main st in mortlake! That thing is crazy fast!

I reckon your mate is jealous.

Divide 1150 by your kw reading to give power to weight ratio. less kgs each kw has to push the better. like a desktop drag race.

XXX-1.8T 路

so 1150kgs/120.7kw

= 9.5

is this any good

Also my mate which pointed this out had his mates dyno reading that has shootout mode and normal mode and shoot out mode gave a 10% higher reading

Whats the use of these 2 modes???

jakriz 路

I don't think that it really matters Costa, as long as u use the same dyno on the same mode everytime, it's all relative.
Jak

amazer 路

yeah. what matters is we are running the exact same turbocharger and i got 90 hp less. I want my money back.

wasnt a good thing to go to. Now I just want to spend more money

jakriz 路

Golde60 wrote:how come jakriz is making 90 and ct 76? can i get some more details on engine configs, carbs, cam etc? i thought the 1916 would be making more?
To be quite honest I was expecting CT's 1916cc to make more than mine despite my recent upgrades in the head/rocker department over Xmas. I've also been slower in lap times as well but we put that down to the 150kg weight difference in our cars & also the gearbox difference as well, mine having a L-bug box with the higher gearing than CT's superbug box.
I've since changed to a close ratio box to try & play catch up as well as the head work & berg rockers.
The specs are as follows

1880cc 73x90.5mm
Chevy rods
Engle K-8 cam
Berg 1.4 rockers
040 heads with 40x35 valves ported & polished with 3 angle valve job by Richard Holzl 8.5:1 compression
Berg dual springs
Berg pushrods
1.5 inch merged exhaust
dual 45mm dellortoes with update kit(horizontal discharge tubes)
Tall manifolds match ported to heads

CT's 1916cc 69x94
Counterweighted crank
Pobjoy 30/70 cam
Street Eliminators with 44x37 valves
44mm Webers
Berg 1.5/8 merged header
1.25 ratio rockers
9.5:1 compression
I'm sure that CT can give u more info & correct anything that i have given.
We were both quite surprised with his 76hp. I was quite sure that he would have more but by how much was another thing.
CT is going to play around with heads & maybe another cam & we'll go back to the same dyno to see what happens.

Jak

vw54 路

Jak so what happened to Dick.

jakriz 路

Sorry Dave , but who the hell are u referring to?
Jak

vw54 路

Dick Hozell you remeber Dick from V Forcce.

vw54 路

Jak go gett he spoons for teh custard... DOD...

RICHARD Or DICK as he known to his friends... everyone calls him DICK. did he bring the car along???

jakriz 路

In all the years that I have known Richard I have never heard anyone call him Dick.
Yes he did bring the car along but was too late as he had trouble with some oil scavenge pump or something like that (too technical for me) & so unfortunantly missed out.
Jak

Bizarre 路

What the hell happened to Peter?
have i missed something sad here?
the spider didnt get hit on the way home did it?
bad? :cry

Yeah - as for my hit that was sad.
For the record i was at dyno day and just had my turn. took the car out and parked it and walked over to look at the spider. Next thing i hear a clunk and thought " uh oh! some poor sucker has been hit" - turn around and this goose has backed into me! I couldnt really say anything cause there wasnt any damage i could see. He reckon he was looking at all the cars and.... I just asked him to leave ........quickly.

Now back to happy stuff.
For the record Blue has
1776 - 69 x 90.5
Counterweighted crank
AP2 cam (sort of Engle 110ish)
8.5ish:1 CR
Stock valved 040 heads that are real old
Heads have been 3 angled but no "real" porting. Richard Holzl had to hemi them a bit cause i only had 43cc when i got them and they had to be opened to 48cc
IDF 36 carbs 40idles/140 mains/180 airs
Aircooled.net offset manifolds that were match ported by previous owner

Room for improvement

rejet - i am running too rich (but i knew that 140's either that or 120's. I need some 130's)
Probabally some 1.4:1 ratio rockers if i can get em cheap enough

TO be honest if i have 60 at the wheels - then that is fine by me! It pulls great and i have driven a few air cooleds now. "If" i can do some tricks and get it to 70 i will have a goal. Hmmmm mayne i should have taken the belt off!

So who did the vids and pics

saw Che Castro do most of it but i could be mistaken馃槑

Keith Haeusler 路

Jak,
Great day, we`ll have to all do it again sometime. Thanks, Keith.

lugnuts 路

1st Saturday in February each year, that gives you a target each year to aim for,an incentive to pull your finger out and get on with it,i know it worked for me,now all i need is a bucket load of cash!

馃榾

jakriz 路

No worries Keith, thank u for making drive your car, now I know what real hp is all about. Richard said that he might know where his Berg 86mm crank is...............if not, I'll get u to get me one later on in the year.

1st of Febuary of each year sounds great. Ct & I are going back to the dyno when he changes his heads. We have until the 12th of April for our first supersprint wiht the Porsche club & ideally we wold like to have the same hp so that we are evenly matched on the track, it would be no fun if one of us could just drive away from the other.
I'm going to play with jetting & also put on my match ported manifold gaskets! I left them at Richards & had to use standard metal gaskets which were about 2.5mm smaller in diameter to my ports! So I may pick up some hp there as well
Jak

Hutcho 路

Please accept my appologies for not attending guys. Unfortunately, I really had to be somewhere that I just couldnt get out of.... Its excellent to see some of the figures though and all of you guys that DID go, now know where you stand in relation to the performance of your cars.
Condolences to you three(?) that experienced situations that were out of your control. 馃檨馃檨
I hope you all are back on the road veedubbing shortly...

Bizarre 路

Jak or CT

could you guys do a power to weight thing?
I would be interested to see how much lighter CT's oval is compared to Jak's 1302 compared to my ...... um ....... do they have Jenny Craig for L Bugs? :jesus

Che Castro 路

heh yeah i took some photos but i still have to finish the roll 馃檪

hey baz at least u got struts and a windscreen that isnt so wall shaped ! :P

XXX-1.8T 路

so who took the video???

worked out what shoot out mode was, its a constant dyno where all variables like ramp rate are equal so if i go and dyno my car somewhere else shoot out mode will be the same conditions as saturdays dyno馃槑

jakriz 路

My superbug is 890kg & I think that CT's oval is 760kg.

fullnoise 路

Hey Jak,

Yeah my car is probably lighter now. The cookie cutters are much lighter than the steel wheels I used to have. I can't afford to put much petrol in the tank. I think I ground the lobes off the cam to save weight too (judging by the dyno results). I'm running a dry sump becasue I can't afford oil either. I've filled the tyres with helium. I've replaced the glass with a plastic emergency windscreen from a service station.

Nah that's all BS. It's probably heavier since it's been upholstered and sound deadened, but not by much though. We can weigh the cars next time we're at Eastern Creek. We should do a test and tune day one Friday.

We'll have to figure out the our power to weight ratios so we can get them close. We might as well race with each other, we'll see daylight before we see Steve Carter's turbo bug.

Craig Torrens 路

Jakriz, love to enter a supersprint, 12th April against Porsche's sounds fun. Where is it and how do I enter !!!
Also there is a Hillclimb/roadrace on the old highway at Bulledellah r u interested in running ? part of the tarspeed series, early March I think.

jakriz 路

Hi Craig
To enter on the 12th u have to be a member of the Porsche club, just join & turn up to Wakefeild Park in Goulbourn & just do continuous laps all day!!!
Just as a friendly note, CT & I aren't there for the competition, we basically just use it as a Sunday drive as the street is no place to drive our little toys quick on anymore. I've noticed on some of your other posts that u champion of the Universe in Hillclimb LOL!馃榾

As for your offer for the hillclimb, I'll have to decline. It's just not my cup of tea. Driving flatout on roads designed for a restricted speed limit doesn't appeal to me, I do enough stupid stuff on my Mountain bike, & besides, after reading the 1916, what do think of it thread, it doesn't sound like u guys enjoy yourselves that much as u seem to spend a lot of time bitching about tenths of seconds.
But anyway, I hope to see u on the 12th, we should have up to 8 vw's this year running with the Porsche club, last year CT joined me & the year before that I was running solo, so to say that it has snow balled is an understatement.
regards
Jak Rizzo

Craig Torrens 路

Jakriz, thanks for the reply. As for the bitchness at hillclimb, there is none, just happened to spill out on this forum !!!!
I was going to race my street beetle for some fun ! the hillclimb gearbox 4th gear is probably the same as a stock 3rd!
Which Porsche club, is there only 1 ?

P.S there's nothing like doing big speeds on public roads, legally!!!

OvalGlen 路

Well done to all concerned in the Dyno Day.
Even the stock figures are a great help to all the hot rodders on the forum.
Must get my act together for the next one.:thumb

lugnuts 路

Gooday, just been lurking at STF its nice to see that not all yanks are claiming 120-150 hp.Theres a guy with a mild 1776 with dual kads 68bhp and 90ft lbs torque, thats pretty close to Barrys 61bhp and theres another hero claiming 17bhp in his stock 1200,all these were dynoed.馃槈

Bizarre 路

Yeah Mick - i rad that too and though "yeah - pretty close"

vw54 路

If it is Barry then was out yr screen does not break...

HES UGLY... :beer:beer:beer:beer

At least a 15 to 20 on the SCHOONER scale.

Golde60 路

still cant figure it out.
ct and jak's engines that is
higher compression, bigger valves, bigger heads, more ccs.

less power.

im giving up, cos the details have just got to technical for me. 馃檪

looks like an awesome day had by all.

thanks for all the pics and info.馃榾

amazer 路

maybe its cos torque = force x distance. jaks car makes torque from longer stroke.
then hp = torque x revs.

back to the old 1916 thread...

Craig Torrens 路

CT needs smaller valves and less radical heads, then it will make more power !(Also he is running ratio rockers compounding the "Big valve" problem)

Its all about the right combination not necessarily the individual components, if one is wrong it lets the whole engine down.

:thumb

fullnoise 路

It just so happens that I pulled the engine out this evening. I'm going to put a dial guage on the retainer and measure the valve lift to make sure it's still there. Then I'm going to test your theory Craig. I've got some 40 x 36 valve 044 heads which are going on. Then back to the dyno for a back to back test.

I'm impressed by the broad power curve of the 37/68 cam but if it doesn't get me above 80 hp with the 044s I'm going to find another cam.

I'm glad you're coming to wakefield Craig. I had Porsche Boxter that couldn't catch me at that track so I'll be expecting you to pull the same trick with some of the 993s and 996s.

CYA, CT

vw59 路

Hi all,

Back on line after 6 months. Sorry Jak missed you dyno day, but had a Kombi that needed an urgent rear seal change!

Guy's where's the torque figures? Without torque figures I'm only getting half the story! Horsepower may win you a race, but torque is what pulls you off the line and out of corners.

My limited experience on dyno's has taught me not to even ask for horsepower readout until my tuning sessions are over. But what I do like to see during the tuning is big torque figures at low rev's.

With my new cam and changes I hope to make your next session.

Looked like a great day!
Cheers leigh

Bizarre 路

Leigh
I think we learn by experience.
Our print outs gave HP and Air Fuel ratio readings. A few of the stock cars that ran on a set of different rollers got HP anf torque.
I guess next time we can ask for the Torque and not air fuel or just look at the air fuel or get 2 printouts or......

amazer 路

baaah. poor excuse. (you and brichall using the same one?) You could have done the seal change after the dyno.

My preparation was the usual 5 minutes. Finished putting the boost adjustment in the night before. Went for a spin up to 22 psi and blew the gasket out of the plenum. Mainly cos the threads are 90% stripped so it probably lifts up. So it would go to 10 psi and drop back to about 7. But it was backfiring pretty bad at the same time. bad coil/plug/lead? dunno. Seeing as how my AF graph goes off the scale and it smokes like a diesel there's probably big chunk's of charcoal hanging off the plugs.

There's always a next time. You better go first as my big block 1800 will prolly break the dyno. Would hate to see you miss out again.

speedster356 路

Yeah amazer, a pretty poor excuse if ya ask me.........I've also heard that Leigh and Dave have started drinking light beer as well!!!!:P

jakriz 路

Hi Leigh
CT & I will be going back to the dyno within the next month if u want to chip in & book an hour or so.
As for the figures, it was only a quick 10 minute session each with 2 runs each, although I got 3 as I was on first & I asked the operator to give her one more blatt as I was intoxicated standing next to my car at 6000rpm! It was brilliant!!!!!

Jak

OvalGlen 路

come on CT, refine that beast

KruizinKombi 路

Chris, I'm sticking the kombi on the rollers at the Melbourne dyno day, so we can do a comparison. Then you'll know wahst sort of improvement that turbo is giving you. :thumb

amazer 路

that'll be cool kol.

vw59 路

Hi Jak,

Thanks for the offer, but I was counting on your next session being after the Nationals, not so early. I'm not going to pull the motor out yet because I know one thing will lead to another and it will turn into a 6 week build. I've got a few other tricks I want to perform to the motors setup whilst it's out. Then I'll miss the chance to cruise to the Nats.

As for that rumour about lite beer, both Dave and I strongly discount this possibility as we don't fill the fridge with lites. Anyone who drinks lites with us is drinking a warm beer (ie: not been in our fridge)

Looking forward to having a coldie with everyone on here at Nambucca.
