i need to take my hot rod from point A (sellers front yard) to point B (my storage and repair place) would this be regarded as:
The closest convenient location for any other purpose directly related to the registration process, including obtaining insurance.
the distance is roughly 2 km. not far i know but im a little paranoid... can anyone see any trouble with this happening? anyone done this and experienced problems?

here in wa you can get a permit to do that for $15
god I love WA.......:thumb

I got a permit for 30 days from vic roads & drove my splitty quite a bit from place to place.Even home from the beadblasters so it was a shell on wheels. Not sure if they do the same in NSW as they seem a little strickter but give the NSW rego dept. a call.

Kikko,
I just drove 80 klms round trip for my Engineers certificate and Blue
Slip. Rang RTA before hand and also Engineer. I had a letter of intent stating the date, the trip the address and the purpose for the trip and also had it signed by a JP (probably going a bit far). RTA said no probs if only for inpection for registration or insurance. Saw 2 cops along the way and they didn't give me a second look with no plates on.

write a letter of intent outlining your journey, ie start and destination. Put the id and description of the vehicle in the letter. Sign it and carry it with you. Now if you crash (which I doubt) the responsiblility is your to pay if you are at fault, but that would be the same with a car trailer. The important thing is that the destination is a "place of repair" or an inspection station.
twoguns ·
it wouldnt be regarded as per the law of taking you car for repair. you can get a day pass in nsw, but i htink hte vehicle has to be road worthy. 2ks run, but you risk fine or big trouble if something happens. 70bucks to hire a trailer and be safe and insured.
:vaderi sense the force is strong in you my young jedi, may the force be with you and you see the path! :vader

i read about this just yesterday in some rta thing, so long as u go directly form a 2 b, no more, no less u can do it and its legal, if u do get stopped by coppers, just explain what u doin and u will be sweet

GL1972 ·
Kustomekool I'm sure Kikko has a credit card machine for an imprint to pay for the fine. Give him a call and give your card details.😉

From the NSW RTA web site
You can only drive an unregistered light vehicle to renew or obtain registration. You may only drive – by the most practical route – to the following destinations:
The closest convenient motor registry.
The closest convenient vehicle inspection station.
From a registry or inspection station to the nearest convenient place for repairs or a location where the vehicle may be garaged. Except when advised that the vehicle must not be driven until necessary repairs are made.
The closest practicable weighbridge.
The closest convenient location for any other purpose directly related to the registration process, including obtaining insurance.
If you are caught driving an unregistered vehicle on any other route, you will be fined and police may remove the vehicle's number plates on the spot or they may seize the vehicle.
I've got to drive about 100km to my engineers workshop, so I'll be after some sort of approval.

phone the RTA, and have them fax you the info, or at the very least get the name of the person you talk to, this is vital because the RTA phone jockeys are notorious for just making stuff up.
If they say you can do it, you must have a signed and dated letter of intent before you drive it. if you get pulled over this proves what you are doing with the car.
HOWEVER most cops don't know their own rules, so this does not mean you won't get hassled, booked, fined and have to defend yourself in court if you happen to get an arsehole or ignorant cop.
best method is to tow it, either by truck or trailer.
writing "Traffic" on a bit of cardboard is a MYTH don't do it! I have written "BLUE SLIP" on my car once on the way to a blue slip station, and a cop car checked it over without stopping me and left me alone.

Damn, the NSW system makes the Victorian system of purchasing a 28 day, $55 Unregistered Vehicle Permit seem like a breeze. Good luck man....

in nsw we get stung and stung again all the time , one time many moons ago i got booked for speeding on my p plates anyway when i was getting my ticket the cop says to me oh i saw your p plate come off just up the road and if you dont go and pic it up right now i will book you for littering, then he wrote me a ticket for only having one p plate i lost my license.
so i think it really depends on how good of a day the policeman is having maybe you should take some krispy kreme donuts with you.
pod ·
use a tow truck shouldnt cost more than $50 when they arent busy , alot cheaper than an unregistered and uninsured fine🙂
Boozer ·
Do it at 2 in the morning...
pyr0 ·
i got matchin plates here but i reckon we drive it with no plates 😉
seriously man......ill do it
Freddie Fender ·
Don't do it late at night, this is when the cops are looking for suspicious behaviour.
pyr0 ·
ok nathan just called and reminded me:
if you ring the local police staion and tell them that it is unregistered and the circumstances, they'll ask for a breif description and some info and where from where you are going and what time you are leaveing.
then your good to roll 😉
you can thanks me by buying me beer hmmm :beer
