well i suppose i get asked every second day howcome you like veedubbelyous. well i blaim it on my nan back in 1976 when she lived at rydlemere and i was about 4 years old. you could see the drive in theatre at Telopea from her front verandah and i would sit on the window sill and watch the movies with no sound. just happened herbie goes to monte carlo was on (what a great intro to such a beautiful thing). so as expected next xmas holidays i went to stay with nan and she took me to the roxy at parramatta (you locals know what im talkin bout) to see herbs and ever since then i have been a freak. i seriously thought if i got a beetle it would be able to spit oil at nismo gtrs and listen to me when i wanted auto pilot to go home etc. well dad finally bought me my first beetle in 1983, what a beast, no glass, no body panels, no rear seat, no foot brake (just hand) and a slipping clutch - WEAPON - no need to say my driving skills were learnt early and the fact i was fortunate enough to be able to grow up on 40 acres with all sorts of car influences, i am proud i went against my fathers all oz (which meant holden) wishes . now its 2005 over 20 years later i am still waiting for my oil spurts, one day it will happen. any vw owner knows they all have personality. they all have a HEART. peace love and mung beans dudes. that feeling will never go away! you just gotta love em. its in the feel its in the blood i got volksymagic :party

thats so beautiful i think im going to cry...

i was inspired to buy a beetle by a bloke named john paul. when he rocked up to work for my father in his beautiful 67 beetle, i was blown away. id heard about people who restore old cars but this was just absolutely stunning. i was used to running around in mums telstar and dads econovan... to see something so old done so beautifully made me want more. he drove me to my year 6 formal, and all the kids (who were currently standing around a hot rod) ran over to ogle. over the years the veedubs changed, from the beetle to his brothers pink splitty to his own ute.

my first (and current dub) was a long shot purchase from east maitland. surface rust a bubbling, on its second engine since my purchase, and a door card is missing. its been vandalised twice and drives on an angle. but i love it all the same. and will continue to love it until the end of its days

i dont want to make you cry, i only got really bad when i got the 60 beetle. the lady who insisted i buy it , who was dying of a terminal disease, has no family, ie no living relative to leave it to in her will. although she told me many young fellows followed her home (you know who you are) and asked to buy it , but her immediate thoughts were the baja or chop top. the only man who ever drove that car was for brake test, the mechanic down the same road as volksbahn (must have been the one with the pretty bowsers) pretty devestating for someone who has had 1 car their whole driving life. this special car was like her child and i vow that i will never sell it, therefore it is currently left in my will to a car museum (not vw) until i set up my own, for legality purposes. what else can you do??? what would you want to happen to your pride and joy if you got run over tomorrow??

People who don't own a VW just don't understand. I've been driving to Brisbane twice a week (thats 2hrs driving) and giving my beast (1973 kombi) a thrashing and I absolutely love her to bits.
My dad says to me one day.... hey, I've been thinking that you should sell and get a more economical vehicle.... :duh WHAT THE?! :duh Should wash his mouth out with soap for sayin that!
You're right countrybuggy. Once you have a volksy it becomes part of your blood, part of your heart and soul, and people who don't own one are missing out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah the Dundas Drive In. That brings back memories. Why did Sydney become so property focused and allow most of the Drive In's to be redeveloped?

Squiz....

Tell me about it Dodge, I hated them with a vengeance, as a kid my dad always had one but when I had my first car (an Austin-Healey bug eyed sprite) at 17 and spent every other day fixing it my dad decided to get himself a new 1600 super beetle and gave me his 2 year old special edition marathon beetle. I hit the roof I hated them but then the relationship blossomed and the longest I've ever been able to go without one since was 6 weeks when I arrived in Oz. People either love them or hate them, the ones who hate them have never owned them. I've owned other cars ,had brand new company cars but none of them have the character or feel of a veedub.

I need help, But there's no drug to cure me. I can't go without one these days. I thought recently about what I might do up next. I breifly, I mean very breifly, considered the idea of doing up another brand of car, but what's the point, I'll always come back to an old dub.
🙂
A datto would be my next choice, but what's the point, no heritage, no personality. Besides, you can always pretend a RWD dub is a porsche. 😉

I'll tell you all why I love my dubs....

It all started when I was about 5, it was instinctive, I can't pinpoint a moment that I thought to myself "I want a VW" it has just always been with me. When I was older (about 12) I had the fortune of going through my opa's old things, and found some papers relating to his VW mechanic business, I was naturally curious and so I asked my aunt about it. As it turns out, my opa was a mechanic during the war, and you'll never believe it, but he was part of the original team who enigineered the "people's car" He apparently worked directly under Porsche himself, and his main job was the clutch assembly.

I guess you could say that VW's are in my blood.
