Historic Reg

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/35641/historic-reg

57kombi ·

I have been thinking about putting mine on Historic reg, but then I found out it is restricted to you using the vehicle only 90 odd days per year which is no good for me as I use it more than just on weekends.

Here is the problem I heard that a bloke in our club had a notchback that was on historic reg but it was taken off him as he didnt have the original seats in it.
I also heard that ANY deviation from stock and you could not have Historic reg, I was told that it had to be how it left the factory , so I was thinking,
Who would drive a car on crossply tyres, 6 volt ect, when it is safer to have 12 volt , indicators radial tyres.
Some people cant afford to run a couple of cars and Historic reg allows them to keep the vehicle in a usable condition and get it out for runs etc.

Isnt it better to have more cars on the road than trying to get them off the road

Now as it only costs about $80 per year for the Historic reg it is worth it to do it if you dont use the vehicle that often, it could save you hundreds of dollars.

Inmy opinion, if it looks like a VW, sounds like a VW, then it is a VW.

OVer here in WA all you need for historic / club registration is ;

1 To be a member of a recognised car club

2 To have an annual inspection of your car the the clubs inspector

Its only logical for safety improvements as you mentioned surely ?

57kombi ·

Its the same here also you need to go on at least 4 club runs and attend at least 4 club meetings.
The problem is it is left to the Historic/Vintage officer of the club to deciede what is and what isnt allowed,
Some clubs like the Ford car club allow lots of non stock mods as long as it still looks like the same model, and in the past our club was very cliky and if you were IN with the commitee then you could get the reg.

Just a shame as this is keeping quite a few cars in the garage.

bugeyedbabe ·

that could be pretty bad...

what if u weren't the clicky (butt kissing) type?

nbturbo ·

Dave-have a chat with Trevor Elze or Dean Gull on Sunday. There have been some changes here in SA in recent times to standardise the rules across all clubs to prevent that matey bullshit from happening. The guidelines are pretty clear now as to what is allowed and places the responsibility of complience on the nominated club officer.

VWFOOL ·

wat r the rules in nsw? who would u hav to see to get the club rego?

57kombi ·

NbTurbo.
Come and say hello on Sunday, If you cant see my bus I can always post a pic so you know what it looks like??????????

The conditions in QLD are quite severe

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/driver.nsf/0f122c06d5c309324a2565ca00059c43/0ef2a6496f7b469e4a256723000623dc?OpenDocument

and

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/driver.nsf/files/images/$file/Specia_Interest_vehicles.pdf

The most relevent are these
Under Restricted vehicle use
- vehicles are not permitted to carry a load except in circumstances where the load is part of a display which directly relates to the authenticity of the vehicle, e.g. hay bales or empty drums

- road testing within a 15 km radius from where the vehicle is garaged
travel in order to have the vehicle repaired. No distance restriction applies in these circumstances but it must be reasonable and openly justifiable.
That means you cannot take you van away for a weekend trip loaded up with camping gear etc.

My 2 cents: If you use your bus, pay full rego, everybody else has to. If you own a show car, put it on club rego.

If people don't abide by the rules of club rego and the Gov / Trans Authorities get wind of it then they will take it way completely and we all loose out.

57kombi ·

MikeM
As per my first post, I am not going on club rego as I do use my bus and dont want to be restricted to 90 days per year.

I was just wondering why the differances in clubs and who states what can and cant be done to a vehicle to keep it in the guide lines.

It just seams that its who you know compared to the actual rules.

A mate of mine' sister bought an oval totally stack and she wanted to put it on historic/vintage/club reg and she contacted our club and the officer said that she had to be a member of our club for 12 months before they would let her have the reg.She said that that didnt seam fair and the officer told her to try the other club???

She than contacted another VW club and they let her have it straight away.
That means we lost a new member to another club, our club could have had her membership money etc.

There are 2 issues there Dave. If the system is working correctly, and her car is OK for historic Reg in one club, then it would also be OK in the other. What is different is the actual rules set down by each club to allow you access to historic Reg. I think most SA clubs now use the 12 month membership B4 granting the Reg to stop people flaunting the system ( I can't think how that would be possible) My opinion is if you have been accepted into the club, paid your club fees and your car meets the requirements-then grant the Rego. I know a bloke with a 356SC who doesn't belong to any clubs in SA, but is a member of the 356 club, never attends any meetings or gatherings, and has Historic rego for it. So there are still some faults in the system. It's a shame your friends sister went thru that shit.I am in both the SA clubs and don't like to see that stuff happening between them.

57kombi ·

Same here.
I think that more effort should be made to have joint cruises and joint events.
We all like VW's so why do I feel there is a problem between the two clubs.

Anyway 2 days to go to the show.
Still wont have time to do my interior, might enter it in the unfinished section.

Dave,
as far as I could gather from all the b.s. that went on last year in regards to vintage rego, the standards are set by The Registrar Of Historic Motor Vehicles.
The club Hysterical officers had to attend a two day seminar on the rules and guidelines for historic motor vehicles.

vwtyp2 ·

some concessions to safety are permissable, ie. 12v electrics and radial tyres.
Major modifications, such as IRS conversions are not.

Robo ·

I have a 56 Beetle on club rego. It has crossplys and is still 6 volt. The lights are fine for any condition, I dont have any problem with the tyre's either, and the wipers work well too. I drive the car on the expressway, and have had no problems. The lights (bulbs not halogen) have restored reflectors (silvered) each light is earthed individually and all conections are soldered not crimped. Crossplys are two years old (Nankengs) and grip well in the wet and don't wander.
If things are set up well, the factory spec's are OK.
Obviously 12 volts and radials would be better, but stock is still OK.
Rob...😎

bus914 ·

how about bolt on mags extractors and torsion bar resetting (type 3)?

Robo, where did you get your reflectors restored?

Green T4 ·

To put my 2c worth in....The licencing authority set the rules, not the clubs.

THEY say you must be a member of A car club, and have your car inspected, because it is a HISTORICAL REGISTER. I think that means your car must resemble something from the time it was produced.

Beetles that left the factory in 1966 (for eg) were not lowered, wide wheels, IRS, big motors etc.

For having an original style vehicle, you get rego at half price, but you can only drive it for a limited time per year (90 days). That stops the bullshit.

On Sunday, have a look at Mal Dodd's red Beetle that he bought from a member of the VEC. When he bought it, it was on historical rego. Now, tell me the option code for a Beetle that has Porsche wheels, lowered suspension (with the adjusting nut welded) small steering wheel, big motor, sports exhaust and no back seat etc. This car is NOT historically significant!

Even in our Club (VWCSA) there is differances with the way each officer will view a VW. But I think all will allow an up grade from 6 volt to 12 volt (for the sake of safety and practicality, as it's difficult to find suitable 6 volt battery now days) and radial tyres instead of cross ply tyres.

It's not that I am against these types of mods on VWs, but they are modified, not historical. Also, i've driven Mal's Beetle. It's a PIG to drive. With no (workable) suspension on the front, it will loosen the fillings in your teeth. That, to me, is not driving enjoyment, but yes, it looks good.

I am constantly amused by one of my favourite Type III sedans at DOVW in Melbourne each year. Lowered, Porsche wheels, brilliant black paint, pale yellow leather (or high quality leatherette) and this is on historical register.

Don't be surprised if the licencing authorties remove Clubs from the active list of approvals, as they are open to too much abuse.

PS...I am not a historical officer, and these points I make are from what attending many VW Club meetings.

Hi Bus 914
Got the done at an electroplater on the Gold Coast quite a few years back, he has retired now, but I would imagine that any electroplater would be able to do it.

nbturbo ·

Maris-I thought when all the clubs sent the nominated Historic officials to the Licensing Authority meetings last year to thrash out the new rules- a set of guidelines was produced as to what was allowed to be modified on an early vehicle, yet still keep it within the "as it came from the factory" specs. I believe there were very specific mods listed, such as the 12 volt conversion and seat belts etc. When I take my cars to the bloke in my local club to be checked that they fall within the guidelines,I have to book a time and tell him the make, year and model and he has a list with the all the cars details eg.tyre size, wheel diameter, engine size, what type of brakes were on it from new etc. I have no issues with denying Historic rego to cars that don't comply to the standard, but agree with Dave that the process of how someone becomes ellegible within a club can lead to lost membership.I remember when I got back into the scene about 5 years ago,I went to a VW Day of at the Bay,and couldn't believe how many heavily modified VW's were lined up with Historic rego.It should be pretty obvious to most people that cars like that don't fall within what the system was set up for. I purchased a car some years back that was on Historic rego, and when I checked the log book,I don't think there would have been to many Taxis around Adelaide that had clocked up more miles a year than this car. Another way for it to be abused. I agree with you about the Black Type 3 in Melbourne,Blind Freddy could see that it doesn't come any where near being eligible, but what an awesome car.I think from memory it was all leather inside-unbelievable detail.Perhaps some of the Historic Rego guys from different clubs around Aus could chime in with what they understand their States guidelines to be ???

63Splitty ·

Dave are your plates a yearly fee or a once off thing?

ragged ·

When I enquired about historic reg at a VEC meeting I was told by one member (not the historic reg person) that I would have to wait 12 months to be eligable. I do not believe that I should have to serve a probationary period to earn the right to be eligable for historic reg if my car complies. Consequently I am still not a member and for a combination of reasons, I've decided to sell the car. If anyones interested it will be at the Day of the Volkswagen on Sunday. It's a 1965 beetle, 40 hp engine, six volt electrics, standard rims with radial tyres. Unfortunately it has a pair of 1964 front seats, the front guards and indicators are from a 1962 and its been lowered. Fortunately I have the correct front seats being repaired, I can supply the correct indicators if you want to weld and redrill the guards and the suspension can be raised. Oh, the colour is Olive Green from a 1962 sorry!

P.S. Surely it is in a clubs interest to attract as many members as possible, by what ever means. And in the process if it keeps cars on the road or better still in Australia, thats a good thing, isn't it?

!2 months is not uncommon. It took me about the same time to get into the club Im in now. The trouble with club rego is that it is open to abuse. PPL join clubs get their cheap rego and have good intentions at first, but soon sucumb to temptation and start taking the car out when they know they are not supposed to. I have seen S registered cars in Qld used to do the weekly shopping and parked in surf spot car parks, it wasnt that long ago one bloke got caught with four boards on the roof and all his mates with him heading to noosa. It has to be a documented club run, or an invitation run by a registered club, or culturally related event or festival. The problem the clubs have is if ONE person gets caught doing the wrong thing, it directly affects the rest of the club, and the way things are getting right now with the state registering authroritys making it increasingly difficult for clubs to keep their historic rego and the tightening of the suitabilty of the car itself, this is why the clubs are becomming a little selective about who is allowed into their club. They have to make sure your a person of good character and someone who will stick to and abide by the rules.
Our club has a breakfast run every sunday, we have a 12 month printed run calendar, this states the place we are going but we put down the starting time as "normal meeting time unless otherwise notified" this allows a little flexabilty as times go. I also am a member of Klub VW, this allows me to attend their runs as long as this is noted in the movements log with my Vintage club. I also attend cultural festivals, Speed on Tweed is an open weekend, I can use the car for the three days of the festival, The herbie parade in the Lismore flower festival, Wintersun rock and roll festival, and so on. I cant complain about not getting my $60 bucks worth of historic rego. I get to use the car every week and I recon the 12 month wait to be admitted to the club was worth it.

Plates are one off fee $170.

The post was about how it differs from one person to the next and I dont think that is fair.

Hi

In NSW the rules are pretty strict. I saw a Fiat from Victoria in ZOOM which had a later turbo motor, big wheels & brakes etc on club rego, I know a few of our club members who would love to get this type of rego for their modified cars.
