4 door VWs?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/35728/4-door-vws

Bami ·

I recently saw a picture of a 4 door fastback, I didn't know they came in 4 door. Can anyone tell me if notches & squarebacks also are available in 4 door??

Che Castro ·

The only aircooled 4 doors are Type 4's which were never officially sold here. Only a handfull were imported for testing.

68AutoBug ·

the 4 door Fastback would have been a 411 or 412...

They were sold in New Guinea & Nw Zealand but Not Australia... if We were New Australia maybe they would have been🙂🙂

I also wanted a 4 door VW back in the 70s... and saw a 411 with 4 doors.... they were sold in South Africa & the UK in Right Hand Drive but Australia missed out.... but they did have to go past Australia to get to New Zealand.... !!

They are fairly rare these days, even in the countries where they were sold....

I think they would have been great in Australia...

Simon Glen in Toowoomba QLD has the 411 in the photo...
as far as I know He will sell it.. its in Very Good Condition...

the other 4 door soft top VW was the type 181 LHD &
type 182 RHD vehicle called the "thing" in the USA & the"trekka" in the UK....

they were made in Germany , from aug 1969 until 1978, then production went to Mexico until 1980...
from mid 1973 CKD kits were assembled in Mexico until full production in 1978..
6,500 CKD type 181 kits were assembled in Indonesia between 1978-80....

Thanks heaps for your replies. Having a look at that 411 for sale now.
The coach door beetle looks crazy - would love one of them!

One other question is does the 411 come in wagon style aswell as the fastback type style?

There was a 4 door Type 3 Notchback produced for the Brazillian market from 1968 - 1972. It was designated Type 3, not Type 4, and was very different to the Type 4's that we know.

I'll try and dig out some pics as I only became aware of this model myself when I saw some pics in a book.

did 411 wagons only come in two doors, and the sedans 4 doors??

SquareD ·

You can check out this site for more information on the Type 4 (and the Type 3):

Found this on the Samba. Can't find a pic at the moment.

"Type 3 output continued in Australia until 1974 and in Brazil until 1982 (In addition to the above figures). Here are the Brazil only Type 3 figures:
1. Variant & Variant II Station Wagon (Brazilian 3-Door Squareback): 297,773 units from 1969-1982.
2. 2 & 4 Door Notchback (1968-1972) & 2-Door Fastback (1973-1977): 133,763 units total."
