OKY DOKY! here is my long awaited trip report! hope you like, bit of a rush job etc etc...

In the bible, the Lord rested on the seventh day...
But as for Flat Four, we were meeting at narellan Mcdonalds for a cruise to Custom Bugs and Busses' Free dyno day! a tidy cruise neatly blending old and new with Steve and Murray's Caravelles, Paul's beetle restoration debut was a hit, stuart in his ever-so-stunning racer, and my own little baby kikko... well it runs! The drive down was very smooth, if you don't count that we got lost twice. when we arrived at CBB we knew we were in for a great day of bugs, busses, dynos and reds diner.

As the day progessed from sunny, to hot, to scorching, so did the quality and power of cars being tested. Even non-VW cars turned up to join in the festivities, including some very nice harleys and hot rods. Dave becker's Call look beetle pumped an astonishing 134 horses, or 100 kilowatts in that newfandangled system, (dont get me started on what happened when i gave the canteen man 5 shillings for my kebab...) Murray suprised all with 80 horses from his ute, and stewart was awarded red's dub of the day. Now it was time for what we had all been waiting for: CBB had promised us a methanol drinking beast to run the dyno (I bet you all thought it was steve) and what a show it was... blowing records and eardrums with an amazing 250+ horsepower.

As most left just after midday i decided to stay on along with stewart to see what else was to arrive, and as terribly burnt as i was afterwards, it certainly was worth it, with a bestly orange baja running the most powerful street registered beetle of the day with 157. It was then that i decided Kikko needed her legs stretched, and a few seconds later she was on the rollers blowing more smoke than the drag car and running an incredibly low 28... Well it runs! Come 4pm it was time for even us die-hard horsepower fans to head home, but not before dave becker ran again, this time with stinger attached which added another 5, not bad at all!
as i headed home, face burning, ears ringing, i couldn't help but think that there is no better way i would have spent my sunday. Thanks to Custom Bugs and Busses for opening their brand new store and putting on a brilliant day, Reds diner for some great tucker, and all who participated in the dyno day for making such a hot day worthwhile.

nice.. looks like you guys had a great day. some sweet rides there. love the spyder...

Golde60 ·

gimme more... i wanna see more pics

looks like an awesome day

any dyno sheets/results/engine specs available?

thanks for the pics john

twoguns ·

that spyder does look pretty horn. would like more pics on that.

zac_smits ·

yeh looks like a good day.

pity it's too far away from me 🙁

Che Castro ·

I have a video of dave becker's on the dyno, just need someone to host it. Its pretty big.

My 1600SP pulled a axle snapping, rubber burrning 38.6RWHP, which is down 0.4 HP from last time it was dynoed 🙂 woo hoo!

That black car made something like 120HP from memory?? And yes it was a 1916 with IDA's

The drag car made around 270HP

sax ·

You got the video with the stinger?
How big is the file?

I got a ton of video but need to convert it all to something useable.

ColumBUS ·

sax was that you taking photos of my car?

Che Castro ·

only a vid with a muffler as I left before he ran it again

Andy ·

Man, that's keen leaving a splitty single cab in front of the cars being tested 😠

Any one know details on the T3 dual cab, and what it ran?
Be interested to know🙂

CoopGirl ·

Andy, no chance of the splitty being damaged as all the cars are harnessed to the floor.
Late in the arvo we have a nice Baja come in and did a huge run on the dyno.... just can't recall what it's HP was. Later in the day (4 o'clock) we had a Golf turn up for a turn on the Dyno too.

I thought there would have been more spectators there but it was a good turnout for the day.

warb ·

could not make it, even being just around the corner, missed a good day...

Turbo54 ·

any dyno figures?
Whats powering the 550? Turbo, intercooled?
T54

There will be coverage in the next edition of VWMA and the CBB website will be rebuilt in the next few days to reflect the move to the new shop and will carry some photos and info of the day.

Matt

Fossil ·

Good onya - looks like a great day :P

Che Castro ·

pete's 550 spyder has a subaru EJ20T in it. he had a few probs that day and wasnt able to get a proper run on the rollers

E ·

wish i couldve been then, unfortunately had to have emergency dental work...

GL1972 ·

Thanks Matt it was a great day. I should have put the 30+ on though. Sorry for dropping oil on the new floor.

I'm pretty happy with the results considdering it is a new engine. Confirmed my next actions. Bigger venturis, Merged header, ratio rockers and then have another go on the rollers.

Will Red's be there next time I come?😀

Brendan

speedster356 ·

Top stuff Matt and the boys at CBB, thanks for the great day. I'll be back again when I sort the sensor problems.
:thumb

OvalGlen ·

that BAJA blew me away , I was guessing a
sad 70 HP from the Tubo charged 1916.
It ran 154 H.P. on only 13 lbs boost.
he has run up to 21 lbs on the dunes.
(it is for sale). Shame that the guy is getting out of VW's
in favour of different make of compact car.

LOWBUG ·

It's a bit of a pitty that none of the mouths with big engines made the effort to show............unless!

HotRodMatt ·

Here's a preview...

Hutcho ·

Pete, Just sell me your car and be done with it!! hehe...
Out of curiosity, what sensor was giving you grief?
Hutcho

speedster356 ·

Might be the O2 sensor, running on C16 might not be the best for it. :oRunning very lean low to mid range. I think this is in closed loop mode.

Che Castro ·

damn I missed that baja. Great to meet a lot of you guys too

Doug Sweetman ·

Looks like a great day, obviously everyone had a blast. I only wish we had some facilities like that over here....

71bay ·

I heard that red 66 panel van made big power. Where is its picture and dyno sheet?

bugeyedbabe ·

pic pics i want more pics..

i love pics...forget the articles

ColumBUS ·

ok trip reports done!

BUMP!

hey castro you think i could use some of these pictures for the flat four newsletter??

speedster356 ·

Hi, my names Pete and I'm a dick head....
Found I had the fuel pressure regulator signal hose from the manifold disconnected.....😠 no rising rate regulator.....
I wona nuva free dyno day........please.....:thumb

Che Castro ·

no probs. use the pics as you please

ColumBUS ·

cheers mate, what do you think of the trip report

OvalGlen ·

Kikko, I want to see your Dyno sheet, you know the one
in Kw you mentioned to me.!

ColumBUS ·

hehehehe the dyno sheet is coming glen

jenz58 ·

Matt, very nice montage ...

Why wasn't there a diner the time I was there??🙁...looks cool..

bugeyedbabe ·

i wana dyno day too...in brissy (there mobile right??)

come on...how will i know how slow my car is going??

i wanna be dud of the day too!

speedster356 ·

Had another run today, fixed the regulator problem but still have intermittent electrical fault. Nice AFRs this time and reasonable power.
The other plots are when we had electical problems with low voltage to the ECU causing screwy runs.
Boost is dropping off to 6psi in the higher rpm, which I need to work on.
This is about 190ish HP I think?

[Edited on 12-3-2005 by speedster356]

OvalGlen ·

mmmm thats more like it Pete, now have you got rid of that speed limiter thingy?

speedster356 ·

Oh yes I have Glenn, plus the TD05 turbo will be on for next weekend.😉.......I want 170kw @ tw and I want it NOW.....

OvalGlen ·

more.......???
You'll be snapin axles if you keep this up

LOWBUG ·

Times the kw no: by .74 and that give you a really close ph no:

Doug Sweetman ·

Doubt it Glen, its only an overgrown bathtub on wheels - cant weight much 🙂

Coolest bathtub I've ever seen though, admittedly.
