ringoschariot ·

wanted early beetle side pop out windows.
does anyone know how much these are worth?

vw54 ·

Lots if you can find them.

Dasdubber ·

Expect to pay approx AU$500 for a pair of complete good condition early popouts. You can get them cheaper but make sure you ensure the latches are there as these are almost impossible to find seperately. Keep an eye out on ebaymotors.com and thesamba.com - they come up every now and again.

ringoschariot ·

$500 jeez! theres certainly a market if someone was going to manufacture replicas

Dasdubber ·

Yep, late model ones can be had for $200 plus...but the earlies are exy. I'd hate to imagine what the split ones (Solid aluminium frames) go for!!!

You may be lucky but if you get a pair for under $500 consider it a good deal. :blush

Menangler ·

I have a set of early ones, the glass has some scratches, latches are good. $350.00 + POSTAGE

robnjo ·

... and there look like a set on eBay at the moment, not mine and hope they are early ones, need to make sure though.

KDFking ·

the pre 60 beetle(i think) are worth around the 250-300us$(about 300-350au)plus postage.just look on ebay.com ....usa.plus just saw this on ebay.de a pair of split window beetle popouts sell for just under 2000 euros!!!but just jump on ebay.com and type in vw popouts.the early ones are slightly smaller vertically and if im not mistaken they also have different knobs.but with the aus and us $ very similar its a pretty good time to buy:blah

BenettonVW ·

Cheap Dave..

Menangler ·

Jim, I think so!!

The ones listed on Ebay Australia are late ones, the seller is saying they didn't fit his '72 Bug so he is selling them as early ones, there is going to be one very disappointed Ebay buyer when they go to fit them in a early Bug!

BUGBOY ·

I have a few sets if you don`t buy Daves.
By the way his price is very good.😉

beerdoc ·

So can you learned wons tell me for sure that these pop outs on ebay at the moment will fit a 75L

BUGBOY ·

Ask how tall they are as early windows the glass is about 290mm.
I`m sure they are late model due to the latches fitted to the glass and not the frame.

robnjo ·

I got late ones on mine, I can check the height of mine for you when the sun comes up...and ask the oz ebay guy how tall are his.

beerdoc ·

awesome thanks guys

beerdoc ·

Oh sorry to pinch your post ringo

Dave, how scratched are they? Have you got/ can you take pics for me? Have they got good inner seals?

Thanks Mate, Nectar.

ringoschariot ·

as luck would have it I managed to grab a pair off Ebay usa for $220 Aus including shipping last night.

thanks for the offers guys.

Dasdubber ·

Excellent work, that is much cheaper than I envisaged (and cheaper than I had to pay!!).....Dave's sound like an awesome deal.

Well done, when I was looking I couldn't find a set under $400 no matter where I looked. Good stuff.

ringoschariot ·

the ones currently on ebay australia are 290mm, so I guess
they will fit early beetles.starting price is $100 with no bids as yet.

Herbie ·

I think they are easy to tell apart as the early windows have the latch attached to the glass and the late windows have the latch attached to the frame, Or is that the other way round?:P
I bought a set in Memphis for Herbie for........ Wait for it............. Did I mention they were earlys?...............complete with latches.........How much would you expect to pay?............but wait, dont answer, you also get a free waterpump and a set of steak knives, for...........Drum roll continues.............Fifty Bucks.
And I will sell them to you for $20, ..... Incredible you say? thats right exclusive offer here folks just $20, thats all you pay, 100 easy payments of $20.........:duh

Actually, Daves offer, above, sounds quite reasonable for such a rare commodity.

As Dave said above, these ones on ebay are for late model beetles (eg. late 60s like 1968 etc) that have the large rear 1/4 windows. They will DEFINITELY NOT fit an early 60s beetle.

As stated above the latch attaches through the glass on the late ones....but attaches to the frame on the early ones.

I have emailed the seller to ensure he knows this as someone may very well get pretty pi$$ed off (I know this happenned to my mate when he bought a pair of "early" popouts off thesamba...which turned out to be late ones). :cussing

bugeyedbabe ·

maybe they go ur orders wrong with his...he bouth them for a late one and they won't fit, thus why he thinks their for the early model

cheers

Dasdubber ·

Not sure why they don't fit his 74 as I thought these had the same size rear 1/4 windows as a late 60s beetle...but I am certainly no expert on these later models. The frames are supposed to be smaller than the opening (but not smaller than the inner lip that the pinch welt attaches to) as the rubber is what seals against the body....maybe he thought the frames should sit outside the opening. I don't know whats going on there...

All I can say though is that they will definitely not fit an early 60s beetle

:kiss

ringoschariot ·

can someone confirm that these will fit a 67?

robnjo ·

ok, just checked mine and their height is 345mm...and their on a 71sBug.
Rob

ringoschariot ·

iam starting to get the feeling that ones i bid on and won (but havent paid for yet)are for a later beetle. can anyone post a pic of an early popout?

robnjo ·

could early one have the hinges in the glass if their not Originals?
...like aftermarket ones?

ringoschariot ·

I think iam going to have to be a non paying bidder on the
windows as I strongly suspect they will not fit early beetles

Unity-28 ·

dont do that....you have bought them, so pay for them, its not the sellers fault. At least tell the seller what happened, and maybe send them a few bucks for the stuff around! you must remember that 65 and later bugs in the us, have the larger sized windows....

This pic doesn't show the latch itself but you can see:
A) The two rivets that hold the latch on from the inside, and
B) No HOLE through the glass which is how the latch attaches on the later ones.

Aftermarket ones that I have seen don't have any aluminium frame at all - they are just glass with the latch through the glass (like late model originals) but just seal against rubber on the body (if that makes sense).

This pic doesn't help much re. identifying popouts but you can see them open on my bug here:

ringoschariot ·

now i see the difference. the seller advertised them as pre 65 pop outs. I certainly dont want to pay for them but will offer him some cash for the mess up. although they were wrongly advertised.

BUGBOY ·

Research before you bid.
As some model beetles have different size windows.
The best way to tell is latches fitted to the glass are late model and latches fitted to the frame are early.
