Can anyone refer me to some quality VW books relating to the mechanical side of things? I have "The Compleat Idiot's Guide" but am looking for something which is a bit more in depth, as I'd love to learn about VW mechanics in order to be better informed about my hobby.

Book mark this site and read through it

http://www.vw-resource.com/

One of the best sites around

Have you tried Amazon.com or Barenes and Nobel? they have some pretty good titles usually.

By the way? what is the complete idiot's guide like? I'm thinking of investing in one, I know nothing about mechanics, and my dad isn't always around to fix things for me

E is uncertain!

someone on this forum was selling one, in the parts section i think...

they were selling other books as well...

will see if i can find it.

E what do you drive??? The Haynes VW Manuals are good....you can often pick them up second hand....it is good to have a book you can open up....and look at when you're trying to sort something out...

OK guys...I use mine so that when I come on to ask a question I've already got an idea on what needs fixing...even if I can't fix it I like to understand what n why something is wrongI have them for Types 1, 2 and 3....

The Type 2 I got for someone who went and bought one the same day....I've always wanted a Type 2 and I have the manual just need the ride :thumb

E ·

I've got a simple little type one, but hope to grap a type 3 soon. Queenie, the Idiots guide is a fairly good start, and for someone like me who had no idea as to what to expect about motors, it was a great help. It has a very understandable process for fixing and maintaining you car. However, it doesn't go into much detail as to specific parts and theyre function as a whole.

Thanks guys and girls.

E,
You should be able to pick some reading material at the swap meet at the nationals for the right price.

h ·

scientific publications for vws on mechanicals are cheap and always available at da shop or the swap meets 2nd hand
hope this can help

boersch ·

for general mechanical stuff "Audels New Automobile Guide (1939)" this book has all the theory behind EVERYTHING so you actually learn about what's happening not just how to fix problems

barls ·

try the idiots guide to keeping your vw alive by john muir

bugeyedbabe ·

does anyone have a spare idiots guide??

barls ·

no but micks motors had them on special for $50

bugeyedbabe ·

thanks barls

hellbugged ·

try thhe gene berg site or better still get his catalouge or book of technical articles

The how to Hot Rod VW.s book is a good one too. It explains alot about the different performance options for all budgets, and handling basics.
I have several VW Manuals, the idiots guide, and the above it is always handy to have different illustratons or parts Diagrams to refer to

get a hold of the official vw workshop manual for your year type 1, they are not cheap, but well worth it. heaps better than the gregorys

Chewy ·

Gregorys are shockingly shit, never buy them
Haynes make great manuals

are Scientific publication manuals any good?? theres usually a couple on ebay

The bently manuals are the best

John muirs is more like a novel than a manual, but is good nontheless.
I would invest in a haynes manual before john muirs book
It has some awesome cartoon pictures in it tho!
