Is there anyone here who hates rap more than me.

Stanley ·

I'm sittin' here looking through AVD as you do on a Saturday morning, with RAGE on in the background.
Now i'm setting myself up for abuse here, but what is it with rap and hip hop...I don't get it.
Eminem, Ja rule, snoop dogg, p. diddy, chingy....WTF.
I've been watching for 20 mins and besides a U2 havn't heard any decent music yet...where's all the rock.

Now I maybe one of the mature members (in age only) of the forum but I love my music some live concerts i've been to include iron maiden, whitesnake, U2, Deep Purple, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits and only recently Killing Heidi.

Each to their own as my son plays it but I tell him it's shit too.

Although I dont mind linkin park and Jay-Z

~air fooled~ ·

nope, i agree, 95% is utter shit about bangin hoes and drive bys.. a great example for our youth of today eh!?

pete wood ·

AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP SUCKS!!! :cussing

(the only exception is 1200 techniques, but even then....)

I'm totally over the stuff, JJJ, get over it!

Robo ·

Im with ya on that one! Rage used to be one of my favorite things to watch, Its been taken over by stereotyped rubbish! Where are the new bands with their own style, instead of re doing old stuff or all that copycat shit they have now! Bring back the oil's, Angels, Led Zep, Bowie, AC/DC and other like them! Kids of today are deprived of real music.
Rob...

pyr0 ·

the only thing close to rap ill listen to is that hilltop hoods song 😉

i refuse to listen to anything else thats even close to it

frenzix ·

Hey i kinda like some of the gansgter rap , but only 2pac and quality artist like that. Most rap they play on TV/MTV/RAGE whatever is shit. White guys shouldnot rap too. But then again i like any music from death metal, jazz, classical through to rap.. any style of music

[Edited on 12-3-05 by frenzix]

byronbus ·

all music is crap, listen to the purr of an 1835

Stanley ·

I'm with ya there frenzix...just as I hit send Casey chambers came on with her pony song...:puke

Greenday now......

frenzix ·

hahaha don't you love commercial shite, video killed the radio star

Boozer ·

I HATE IT! I REALLY REALLY REALLY HATE IT! arrrgh! they're all the same!

Robo ·

What was that picture of a piece of machinery you posted on the other thread a while back! that may be able to rectify the situation a bit!..😉
Rob...

Boozer ·

me?

Robo ·

Yep!
Rob...😉

Boozer ·

wat this?

Robo ·

Yeah
Thats the one!
Rob...😉

Chewy ·

I'm more of a metal man myself
But there is good hip-hop out there, its just you'll never hear it on TV/radio
Its pretty rude to rag on the whole genre of music when you only hear the SHITTIEST SHITTY SHIT through the media

bit of a generilisation methinks

Midlife crisis ·

I agree Crap oops Rap and Hip hop is SH!T but they did just play Stevie Wrights Evie part 1. Long live AC/DC Black Sabbath Deep Purple

Marc

pete wood ·

Spoken word can be done well, RUn DMC, Beasty boys, Faith no more, etc

but when every sentence ends with "uh hu" or "nigga", I'm totally over it. We don't need ghettos or drive bys to be cool.

Remember Jimi Hendrix, he smoked weed (not that I advocate that), said outragous things and died young, but at least he actually added something. 😎

Gangstas mostly aren't even real gangstas, and the real ones stopped being gangstas so they could make money rapping badly. everyone should just get over it, they're not real rebels. :o

koolkarmakombi ·

depends,

Maxi Jazz (Faithless) is the man.

Gangstas with their pimpin ho'in stuff is a waste of airtime.

Why do rage and video hits just show that shit, there is plenty of other new/old tunage........

Scissor Sisters rage last weekend was awesome though!!!

kkk

steve-89 ·

I 100% agree HIP HOP is crap, every song sounds the god dawm same. The music stations should start playing METALLICA, LED ZEP, AEROSMITH and TWISTED SISTER. there the cool band that need to be played more not this hip hop shit that is heard on the radio today.

cheers steve.

Che Castro ·

Heh it is a gross generalisation. Its like saying you hate punk when you listen to good charlotte and blink 182.

50 cent, eminem, jay-z, xzibit, chingy, nelly et al are the ultra commercial side of hip hop. They dont really take all the gangsta stuff seriously, it just sells records to white kids. This genre of commercial hip hop is intertwined with ever so cheesy "R&B" which the marketing people decided to euphemistically call "urban" music.

There is much better hip hop out there that is less well known and doesn't get mainstream airplay like Sage francis, Mos def, blackalicious etc, and then there is other stuff like DJ Kraze, Invisible Skratch Picklz which is purely just turntablism which has no words. Also old school stuff like Run DMC, grandmaster flash and the furious five, whodini, de la soul, public enemy, NWA, beastie boys is fantastic.

I like aussie hip hop too, because it is honest. They dont try to rap in american accents, they dont try to rap about life the the ghetto and rubbish like that. They are more honest than "retro rock revival" bands like jet, the bees, the shins and all the other "the" bands which are all about image.

I like AC/DC too 🙂

oh and Killing heidi is crap :p

frenzix ·

ACDC? Are you serious Have they had a good song in 20 years? or Metallica? THey used to be good... iron maiden? Man they must be like 20years ago aswell. Twisted sister? Yeah they used to rock! But they are a little washed out now.

Hip Hop isn't crap it's just like every music there's crap and good...

It sn't wise to be so narrow minded with one music genre.

Stanley ·

Not my first choice either but for $22 a ticket...:P

Che Castro wrote:I like AC/DC too 🙂

pod ·

whatever happened to good old aussie music, like the mentals ,icehouse ,the models ,oils ,radiators, bands that wrote and played most of there own songs not this copy cat sampling load oh SHIT, will they ever learn to play there own songs

aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhh somepone send me back to my teenage years in the 80`s

akean1 ·

in melburn there are a lot of live music venues, lots of stuff a lot of people will never hear. some great hip hop gigs aswell as folk, rock, jazz, etc. from the subtle to the obscure. its good to expose yourself to all styles without judging before you hear it (going out with friends and thinking "oh no, not a [insert music genre] night, this will suck" you set yourself up to hate it before you heard it that way. you migt like it, or you might not, but the odds are someone is feeling it, and dos'nt need to be told you think their taste is shit, doing this usualy creates barriers and cuts off a lot of communication:kiss

DIY-DUB ·

Hey im goin 2 either piss everyone or no1 off with this, same as cars and all else im open 2 all kinds of music, hey i like Midnight oil, pink floyd, ACDC, meat loaf, offspring, older silverchair, usher, 50cent, eminem/D-12 later albums, some country is ok, frank sinatra, billy joel, elvis, icehouse, jet, linkin park, men @ work, metallica, lost prophets, story of the year, talking heads, nick skitz, chemical brothers, cypress hill, scribe, klubbheads, DJ alligator, powderfinger, greenday, living end, warp brothers, chilli peppers, etc im sure i could think of more but u shoul dget the idea, music is cool all of it has its time and place, surely ppl would agree with that

MickH ·

Rap is CRAP.:repuke

bus914 ·

Possibly me.

Early Rap was the voice of the black people uniting them against inequality and oppression.
Gangster rap on the other hand seems to shift the focus and pit them against each other diffusing all potential political power.

Not a fan of Rap, hate Gangster rap.

byronbus ·

My favourite cafe in byron is called twisted sister

akean1 ·

any body ever been to see a freestyle rap gig?
some peoples minds work so fast, can be verry impresive

killakornkobb ·

i listen to rap crap, but keep it too oldeskool like GM Flash, Old Bad Boy family stuff.. like Biggie.. Slick Rick, NWA and Tupac.. aswell as newer (and older) Redman/Methodman, and Jay-Z which is all pretty decent..

the new commercial rap Blows (and dare i say it) suchs at the same time

Werd :thumb

akean1 ·

yo yo yo , all! who's goin to da haters ball?

Stanley ·

For the record.......I don't like rap it's just not my thing...But i'm not implying in any way that I don't like those who do.

My son enjoys his rap and hip hop *sigh* but when he cranks his stereo up in his room with some D12 or Ja-rule, I crank mine up with some led zep, maybe some sabbath or then again maybe some Super Jesus....then his mum yells at us both and tells us both to grow up, then we'll settle on some linkin park.

Robo ·

Hey Kafer man
How come ya know all their names!..:P
Rob...😀

Starbug ·

gangsta rap is stupid... just some scared little boys trying to be tough.

like bus914 said, rap used to be about fighting the establishment, living life tough, fighting the powers that be.

oldeskool rap is great, actually has some meaning! it was something new and revolutionary for its time... what gets played now is just some little angry men trying to out-playa eachother.

and i like australian hip hop. i like pretty much anything that isnt mainstream top 40 music. everyones ears respond to different sounds in different ways, what you think is shit might be a symphony for some. imagine a world without music? even gangsta rap would be a welcome sound then!

ancientbugger ·

Now I just feel sorry for all the poor kids growing up with the shit. I mean when I'm sodding around with the car I'll be there humming away to myself or singing (in a fashion) anything from the 60's 70's or 80's but what will these kids be able to hum/whistle whatever when they're older:jesusCertainly not Rap crap!!! There that's my 3 pennys worth:thumb

jenz58 ·

I guess hip pop is not our scene here really...if it wasn't for MTV stuff then we would be listening to something else

Do they have it as much over in the UK? We do seem to follow the American trends :jesus...but yes...good stuff does come outta there...

Was in NYC 12 years ago...went to a club....the best rap.... must admit it was good...some kid of 13 yrs got up and was amazing...got those words out real fast n with attitude ....everyone in the place was off their faces...These are the people who started it...street life...story telling to their beat...GET DOWN!!

Yep what we see on TV are pimps and their hoes....and all look and sound the same ...argh!!

bertie_beetle ·

rap and hip-hop, each to their own i guess, but sounds shit to me. i have to admit though that some aussie hip-hop is good for a laugh simply 'cuz its so crap.

I'm more worried about the good charlotte/simple plan crap which is ruining the reputation of old skool punk/hardcore. if i get one more person tell me i look like a member of good charlotte i'll roll 'em so hard......(not really, i couldn't roll anyone, but i'll give them a dirty look)

long live Bad Religion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jenz58 ·

I just have an eclectic taste in music...it all depends on the mood....but very raely hip hop/rap unless I'm at a place that plays it and we're up and dancing....I like to go with the flow so long as it doesn't happen often with rap

jenz58 ·

...we can all be narrow minded in our own ways :sandrine

frenzix ·

sorry for that outburst

jenz58 ·

wah you deleted...does that mean I have to delete.... 😉🙂

bertie_beetle ·

uh-oh....is this thread going to deteriorate into something like the infamous "music sharing" thread........

you might like rap, you might hate rap, in the end, who cares, listen to what you want to listen to......'cuz the fact is we all like VWs......the sweetest sound ever

jenz58 ·

...dak dak dak ...sweet mmmmm:thumb

frenzix ·

hehee sorry jenz.. but i thought about it later (i do that alot) and decided it wasn't the most tactfull way of dealing with this.

frenzix ·

that music sharing thread became quite funny actually

The thing that annoys me about rap is the poor images presented of women. Apparently, according to rap artists, all women should be gyrating in bikini's and bending over and touching their toes etc etc. Great examples of how to treat women being set there.

Give me 80's Electonica and Pub Bands anyday.

DIY-DUB ·

any pub music is good as far as ive heard

hehe I'm sure all rock bands present excellent examples of how to treat women too 😀

ColumBUS ·

im a fan of the aussie hip hop scene, such as 1200 techniques, hilltop hoods, koolism etc. they represent success in something dominated by american culture for a long time. they rhyme about struggle in the music industry, struggle when times are hard, and celebration of successes, no mention of bitches anywhere. they live life for fun and rap because they can and they love it, not because of bitches and riches.

plus when koolism won the aria for best hip hop album, they told the americans to fuck off... when the black eyed peas presented them with their aria!

ColumBUS ·

but i think you all know im a major fan of music, with my main favourites being metal, ska, reggae, jazz, rock, junglist drum and bass. im in a metal band myself, ive sung with a ska band, plus im a badass beatboxing, um... badass

Herbie ·

I have 2 thoughts on this,
1. People relate music to memories or experiences, Every style of Music is "CRAP" to someone or another and some stuff just hits that sweet spot.
2. The music industry, or should I say the record industry is a joke, and we consumers bare the brunt of that Joke.
We have allowed these companies to tell the general public whats cool and whats not.
Whats cool is what they have to sell us, reguardless of whether its shit or not, their marketing people have ensured that it comes across as "cool" to the majority of impressionable people, Just like Smoking did.
There is no open market for music, and as total proof of this fake "most Popular Census" go into Sanity and get a top 40 chart, the go to HMV and get one and then Whichever other store you care to look at and for some amazing, inexplicable reason, each chart is almost totally unrelated to the other.
Why? Coz its bullshit, the figures have not been unbiasedly collected for your convenience, its merely a menu of their most profitable stuff cleverly named the "Top 40" in the hope that the newcomers to the world of consumerism fall into their web of deceipt,
Its all about making money and the best way for the record company to make money is to buy the product as cheap as possible by cutting very lean deals with musicians and then dictating to the consumer by misleading them into believing that everyone else is buying this product, because its cool.
Just because the consumer doesn't understand Why Its "cool" doesn't mean that they wont buy it as so to be part of the "IN" crowd, Its called Peer Group Pressure, and if you've ever known the story of the Emporers new clothes you can see that this is not really a new thing at all.
People are their own worst enemy and the majority of the people are gullible but they are still the majority, and Majority rules.
This is why they dont just ban the sale of cigarettes, because right or wrong it will be unpoular on the whole with the majority of Voters and it would remove a huge revenue stream that has been placed there as Tax under the false cover of pretending that the government cares.

As A Proffesional DJ of Some 15 years or so I can tell you it drives me nuts.
Can you play Christine agaliras Dirty for me?
Have you got any Brittny spears?
Do you have any RnB? Like they would even know what RnB was!!!!
They are actually asking for record industry dictated comercial hip hop that is the cheapest product the record industry could buy, by getting Black Artists from poor backgrounds with $signs in their eyes to remix content that the record company still owns from the last time some artist got ripped off. The new hip hop artist gets a much smaller cut than an original Artist can demand because they own nothing original and know that there is another Poverty stricken wannabe right behind them waiting to take their place.

Its a disease called greed and its invented by man,
Heck the people who rebelled against the establishment in the 60s have now marketed the rebelion of today.
Sure you can be an individual....... But you'll need the correct "cool" individuals Baseball cap, and the correct Fashioned rebelious individuals oversize pants, dont forget to wear them with your arse hanging out, Cos Thats "cool" no matter how much your senses {and anyone else who didnt get the big brother Memo} tell you that is makes you look like an absoulute dick who cant dress himself, Oh and Heres our ridiculously overpiced Shoes and Tops with our Companys official "cool Logo" on it so you can spread the disease to all your friends to make us even richer at no expense whatsoever to us!, coz they will know who to come see when they are ready to hand over their money and become "cool" too.

I will say this however, I like that all the young girls find it Fashionable to wear clothed that need to be taped down so that their tits fall out as soon as they get drunk and the tape gets weak, I dont think I will ever get sick of that, or how they have to shave their Genitals so their pants dont have combovers because they dont actually cover themselves up. I think Thats Way Cool!!!
Not all is lost!!
And Yes Kafer I probably hate todays Rap music more than you.

ColumBUS ·

its sad to see that punk is dead, the music industry fat cats saw the rise of underground punk bands, and marketed it until it was the next cool thing to do as it was different and rebelling from their last consumer driven plague of RnB.
good charlotte and avril lavigne and the likes dont do it to rebel from society, they do it to make dollars.

did you know that before avril signed a contract she was a gospel singer?

these days there is no such thing as anarchy, even the former hardcore punk rebels such as manson have become tools. and anyone who doesnt conform is banned from playing. aussie indy metal band sadistik execution were banned from playing in australia, the uk, usa etc etc, anywhere that the band held a fanbase. do you know why? because the metal band were too extreme to fit into any record label. limp bizkit can have people die in their mosh pits, but they can play anywhere they want. because they make money for one of the largest record companies ever.

has anyone ever heard the song 'sell out' by reel big fish? sums it all up in one short sweet song, funky ska tunes as well!~

ska's not dead, its just that nobody like it... Los capitanes - canberran ska band

dubcab ·

Wow this thread has struck a nerve with a lot of people. Basically I,ll listen to just about anything but yes some of the shite that gets fed to us on telly is very ordinary. Without video clips it would not sell, simple as that. I think some people are getting confused as to what they are listening to, because there is not a lot of GENUINE rap or hip hop on the telly, its mostly RnB/ urban. It really is just image based music. Some peoples idea of rap is very interesting indeed. All I can say is dont taint everything without guitars with the same brush. Whats in my c.d. rack? system of a down, vivaldi, nirvana, magnetic fields, portishead, streets, rage against the machine, smog, nick cave, big day out and jjj compilations, white stripes, carmen mcrae, donovan frankenwrieter, cat empire ROCK, METAL,DANCE,POP,JAZZ,CHILL, its all good at the right time of the day or night. Get some variety into ya ! Please dont try and tell me that MMM have any relevence in TODAYS society. Ahh.....the good old days.....teenage mullet fury:duh

The one thing I love to do is go and see a pub band that may not necessarily be "perfect", but damn they write their own stuff and do the best they can, enjoy it and the crowd will decide whether they do an encore.

i'm not a huge fan of rap (ie i hate most of it). Linkin Park and Jay-Z - their album wasn't too bad, but that worn off as well.

I really like Prodigy and that type of music.

Rage against the machine weren't too bad.

And if you want no idea what a bloke is saying, go for some rammstein.

ColumBUS ·

nah all you need to do is buy the english version albums for rammstein

look up a band called behemoth...

i love the prodigy, chemical brothers etc. in fact i like any style of music that makes me feel something, whether it be the exhilaration of deep bass running through your body at a fast rate, the adrenaline rush of rocking out in a mosh pit, pure happiness when in a skank circle... i live for music these days

Im with kikko, I just like good music, It can be anything, I dont have any specific genre (although I do love my metal)
I like to listen to Johnny Cash, and then Blood Duster
