I just found out from my university that after four years of study fulltime.... I STILL can't jolly well graduate.
It seems that they failed to mention to me that I need to do 10 core subjects when I started my degree, not 8. So now after being so excited about graduating.... I can't graduate till next year because I have another two damn subjects to do!!!!
BOOHOO :cry

I need some :beer

splittychick ·

That is bad news.....actually that really sucks. You must be sooooooo bummed!!:cussing

I had a similar thing happen to me. They cahnged the course halfway through. and also one of the subjects that was meant to be 8 credit points (engineering subjects are 8 instead of 10, yet have the same workload:o) was listed as 7 so was 1 credit point short. and then 1 subject i needed to graduate was no longer available. went and got a letter from teh ehad of school and they let me graduate. go and speak to head of school. and ppl like that and try and sort it that way?

squizy ·

Can they give you credits in anything at all dodge?

~air fooled~ ·

oh dude that sucks major ass... im sorry for ya!

SKEWtYpe3 ·

that sucks !
my friend is going through similar, uni cant afford a teacher and hence he cant finish up either, plus heaps of other crap that is unbelievable

u aint the only one our government stuffs around, hope u feel better.............in some way.............

dodge ·

I've talked to 3 different people and they all say that I cannot be exempted from these two subjects because the only way to be exempted from a subject is if I've done something similar to them before in another degree or at another university.... and I haven't.
And apparently I've done one too many subjects in my major or something :duh

The stupid thing is, because they are core units (Communication and Australia Asia & Pacific) they are two of the easiest subjects (writing essays and learning about Australia) but they still won't give me an exemption!
I should damn well know how to write an essay by now, and if I don't know enough about Australia already by living here for the last 21 years, well mug me! :cussing

They've given me two choices:
1. Wait till second semester this year and do the two subjects (I'll be working fulltime as well 🙁)
2. Graduate with only one degree (I've done a double degree with a triple major)

I'm thinkin I'll just wait n do the subjects coz I've put too much hard work into this to just graduate with one frickin degree.

girl that sucks...

i'm only in the first of 6years..at least hecs fees weren't this high when you started uni :P

*ducks and runs off shouting wildly teeheehee*

slowbay70 ·

it is just a test from the universe...for sure...but i feel for you, just breathe...dont you just hate hearing this kind of stuff when you feel shitty...but it is the truth

mscabrio ·

All unis are the same ! I am i my last year of my Masters degree and they are still stuffing my enrollment around !

Good luck with the rest of your studies

dodge ·

Thanks mscabrio :thumb

slowbay70, that was a bizarre reply but to some degree I agree... i think there is a reason for this... but anyway :duh

Octa ·

What year did you start dodge? What you should do is look at the Faculty handbook for that year and see how many core subjects were required in the year you started. I work at UNSW in Sydney and that is the way it happens here, your degree/graduation is ruled by the handbook/rules/etc current int he year you started. If the amount of core subjects required changed years after you started then it does not apply to you. Which Uni are you studying in?

Fossil ·

Bad news Dodge - follow Octa's lead been there also back in the 70's but swollowed the bitter pill with plenty of beer for another year :beer

72TWINCAB ·

I'm so glad I never went to uni......

Seems like they stuff you around a far bit by what I've read in this thread.

Fossil ·

yeah but that's also why the charge you so much for a degree

KDFking ·

a similar thing has just happended to my sister ..she was has to do an extra course to get (i think she was just 2 or 3 points short of getting her degree)her degree.she was pretty pissed as they give absolutly no leighway.

dodge ·

hey Octa, I started in 2000, but i changed my degree part way thru.
I did a year of commerce and then changed to commerce and IT in 2001 but they failed to mention to me that I had to do an extra 2 core units....
its probably my fault. I should have made sure I had all the information before i started.

Yes you're right 72TWINCAB, uni is marketed as one of the most important things for a young person to do but its a load of crap! Its just a way for the government to get your money.

I got a VERY well paying, VERY good job for a "graduate" (I guess I'm not a graduate anymore) ONE WEEK after finishing my last exam last year... AND my employers didn't even look at my resume before employing me. Admittedly I knew one of them before I got the job but he had seen my work in a previous job I had and knew my skills. It had nothing to do with my degree.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy my time at uni. I absolutely loved. Its an awesome opportunity to meet other people, but little core units that have nothing to do with the real world should not be pushed!

Anyway, enough of my rant, lol :duh
