Im a fan of fantasy fiction, as well as religious texts.
but my biig passion is shakespeare... i have quotes and plays strewn across the walls of my room.
anyone else here a big reader? it was my passion before Volkswagen
Boozer ·
everthing. mostly. though if someone asks me if I've read a certain author I dunno even though i've probably read tons of their books. and lots of webcomics!
ColumBUS ·
boozer have u read jean m. auels clan of the cave bear series? interesting woman she is... announces that a 6 book saga detailing the life of character ayla, writes four, then stops.
that was in the 70s
she released the fifth book last year. i assume the sixth is coming out a looong time ahead of us. but a brilliant read all the same
Lams ·
I don't enjoy reading. maybe it's because english is my 2nd language, I am not able to read quick. Maybe it's because I'd rather play Gran Turismo...
I spend most time reading WHEELS and VWMA. but I do realise I should read other stuff for growing my vocab!
I did read that series of novels by (forgot) about a female soldier in an invaded country. I'm sure some of you read those too!
Starbug ·
sci fi... sci fi...
did i mention sci fi?
i have a bookshelf full of the stuff... its awesome!
if you ever feel like wasting a few weeks/months reading sci fi, then go for Peter F. Hamilton.
his books are usually about 1500 pages EACH (and theres usually 3 in a series) and they are VERY GRAPHIC!!! his imagination and the depth he goes into astounds me... believe me, once you start reading you just CANT stop!
but at the moment, the only things im reading are textbooks 🙁
Bizarre ·
Not a big reader - more a holiday reader
Went into a 2nd hand book store on the gold coast a few years back and this sweet old 80 year old put me onto Robert G Barrett and the Les Norton series
Sex - violence - drugs - more violence (in a nice way)
What i do like is a know all the places he talks about - Bondi, the X, terrigal, Morouya etc etc
frenzix ·
im a holiday reader too.. When was in tassie read most of michael moores books.. i like to read non fiction
frenzix ·
or political
ColumBUS ·
hmmm wasnt a fan of michael moore. i thought he had a fresh new outlook on politics in the usa, but as i read on i found he was just another liberal, the only difference being he has the balls to be heard
Queen_Bug ·
I read anything I can get my hands on. Crime, adventure, fantasy, romance, ficton, non-fiction,political,true crime, classic....I combine my two loves, reading and VW (I drive to the library or nearest bookstore!)
Chewy ·
I love war books, true storys or just an accurate account are what I like best.
Reading THE FIST OF GOD at the moment, about Iraq invading Kuwait in the early 90s.
squizy ·
VW Trends, Hot VWs, VWMA, The SMH....used to read a lot of Kellerman, but now mainly grab a book when on holidays. Murder mystery's, that sort of thing.
Then there's toilet reading......so the VW mags are there along with Who for the crossword. :thumb Sorry....is that too much information?
frenzix ·
i like anyone that doesn't like george bush, and little george bushes AKA john howard. I don't care if they even bend the facts, reason? because it's only fair to do it that way for an even arguement.
frenzix ·
yeah toilet reading is definately time for mags, i read womans day, no idea, 4x4 mags, vw mags or i have even been known to read a hebrew dictionary.. no joke
frenzix ·
not that i understand anything in it.
byronbus ·
Frenzix I have a hebrew dictionary and a greek dictionary...enjoy them both
frenzix ·
*phew* If i'm not working come over this arvo to pull on things
byronbus ·
Dude dont hijack peoples posts, thats what the lismore post is for...
warb ·
Well, I've always been a firm believer in the three R's: Reading TV Guide,
um... Riting to TV Guide, um...and Renewing TV Guide.
Che Castro ·
I've been reading trainspotting for the 2nd time in the last few weeks. Only really read it on public transport. I'm a bit on and off with reading, sometimes I will really get into a book and read it before I go to sleep or in my spare time. But mainly I read on public transport or when I am waiting.
Also read the Da Vinci code recently partly for laugh. It's difficult to take it seriously these days. Probably one of the first fictions I have read with product placement in it. Just terrible.
Before that I read, White Teeth, Myra and Myron, LOTR.
mscabrio ·
I am a big fan of Stephen King. I like the beejeezus scared out of me !
But at the moment I am a nerdy masters student so the book that I am currently reading is titled "health care systems in Australia",
ColumBUS ·
health care system in australia... freaky stuff!
another thing... this should be in the confessions thread... i love romance novels. bring me back to a time where seduction wasnt a shot of tequila and a slap on the rump; but a rose on the doorstep, an outing to theatre, a poem, a letter...
i think im going to cry....
Queen_Bug ·
Since when has Tequila and bum slapping been seduction? anyone who slaps me on the bum gets a kick in the balls...I'll take roses and poems and theatre anyday
bugDbug ·
VW crap, UFO & Aliens. We are all doomed

$2.63 homebrand baja ·
*sigh* ahh kikko, if only you were a little older and furrier. I would happily be your unwaxable queen. Rump slappers suck. :cry there is romance out there, I am sure of it. I just have to stop rummaging thru trashcans :P
Doug Sweetman ·
Just rereading the Wheel of Time series for the third time, in anticipation of the 12th book, just so I have the story straight in my head before I dive in again. Awesome series - I read it as an escape from the real world, I really get into the books.
David Eddings, Steven King, Brian Lumley (Necroscope series was great), Terry Goodkind, Allan Dean Foster, Piers Anthony etc etc etc.
I was raised on Sci Fi / Fantasy - have been reading it since I was about 8.
barls ·
romance isnt dead its just sleeping im sure i saw it on its perch a little while ago.
barls ·
btw im a science fantasy fan as well. love Robin hobb and Tad williams
pete wood ·
textbooks 🙁, bible (it's my job).
Any fiction I can lay my hands on, any car mags I can lay my hands on (except meathead V8 ones), the paper over people's shoulder on the train....:P
ColumBUS ·
two hoodlums lust and sex in ricers bashed romance back in the 80's... he was reading poetry to his girlfriend courtship in the back of his splitty when they rolled up and beat him senseless with sticks.
he's still in a coma, but he'll be out soon... ive been donating my blood sweat and tears to bring him back
warb ·
barls wrote:romance isnt dead its just sleeping im sure i saw it on its perch a little while ago.
romance is pining for the fjords.
barls ·
your not alone in that one mate. ive also got a snail that can count if you ever want to replace him :thumb
Queen_Bug ·
I like to think that romance is comming back....
You're right about guys your age treating women like crap, thats why we all go for older guys
ColumBUS ·
so queen bug do you have a favourite romance novellist?
barls ·

:duh looking for harold holt??? :duh
ColumBUS ·
i think he was swimming with chivalry and modesty at the time...
Queen_Bug ·
I can't pinpoint a favourite as such, but I do like Jane Green.
I read a lot of Wilbur Smith...he has a bit of romance in every novel
~air fooled~ ·
i only read non-fiction, dont waste my time with fiction as i prefer to learn rather then dream and imagine, i do enough of that at work... i just prefer to learn in what time i have to read...but i love reading.... use to read up to 7 papers back to back every week on top of books at night and TIME bla bla bla... too much time spent reading and not out enjoying myself sometimes so i stopped that... one memorable book stands out from when i was like 14 or so... A Garden For Eden. The story how an american child was kidnapped and ended up alone and left for dead in the middle east and he was rescued by a secret PLO camp hidden amongst the sand dunes of the desert. he ended up learing arabic, reading the koran and becoming a 'fedayeen' (spelling?) , freedom fighter.... basically he was trained as a soldier from a young age with the other arabic boys... cant quite remember the ending now but wish i could read it again....anyway, back to work zzzzzzzzz zzzzzzz zzzzzzzzz
baybuscamperkid ·
i find Philosophy novels, especially Sartre's the most rewarding (and damn hard to read), Stephen King is good (especialy the Stand), the dude who wrote Ice station is good fun (like a Bond or Vin Desiel movie in a book, only with MORE action) most crime/suspense novels are a good read, but some writers are down-right disturbed!
ColumBUS ·
my favourite author would have to be shakespeare!
but modern would be raymond feist, terry pratchett, sarah jacobs...
if you have a lot of time on your hands, find the battleaxe trilogy and the wayfarer redemtion trilogy.
sometine known as the wayfarer redemption saga, it combines fantasy, action, science fiction, romance, supernatural, thriller... everything in the one series... note that its 6 books long and the shortest is 750 pages, so be prepared for a lot of sitting.
bertie_beetle ·
wow, its interesting to see that so many people still read these days. thats awesome. most people my age don't read very often, including myself. i have the attention span of a 3 year old ADHD kid on red cordial, so i avoid long novels. i like to read some of the books by Dr. Karl Kruzelniscki and stuff like that, with random weird facts. i also like eastern philospohy teachings, stuff from the Dalai Lamma is always interesting.
i am yet to read the DaVinci Code, i will one day.........seems weird.......thats good
barls ·
i found the deathgate cycle was better or the Robin hobb assasin trilogy followed by the live ship traders then finished by tawny man series was better
ColumBUS ·
only one person has noted an australian author... airfooled. matt riley wrote ice station correct? or a riley of some sort.
dodge ·
i mainly read philosophical stuff or non fiction these days. i'm with airfooled... don't like unreality...........
ColumBUS ·
'people who do not read fiction are simply afraid of what they cannot understand.'
Poe.
dodge ·
i read fiction through all of my younger and teen years and now i think i've "grown up" and want to read something about real life :P
i wasn't condemning fiction Kikko, merely stating that i'm in a different phase of life at the moment :P
ancientbugger ·
I read history and find it absolutely fascinating how you can read so many books about the same era in time even the same battles but get so many variations on the same thing plus how history is continually changing and not set in stone as you would expect (ie being changed to suit modern politically correct times). As you can imagine this can get very heavy so I always keep The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy handy for such events:thumb
pod ·
am reading Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy trilogy at the moment , love to read Wilbur Smith,Stephen King and Robert Ludlum and some spy type paper backs titled The Executioner , Able team as well as real stories about crime in australia like the vampire killer and the sheila who killed her boyfriend and skinned him and cooked bits of him for his kids, so read a variety of stuff i suppose

OK for me fiction...Thomas Hardy...he paints pictures with words...I can smell the dew covered flowers....feel the wind...imagine the hardship.....oh....and feel the 'excitement'....he has a way with words that man...
I love to read and be able to see pictures...if I writer can't paint then I don't read fiction....and if a non fiction writer doesn't get my interest then I don't finish his book..I do have lot's of unfinished books...
My husband never left a book unfinished....he devoured them....and had so much general knowledge...like me he read all sorts...OK not the arty ones so much....fiction and politics
ColumBUS ·
anyone here also a fan of poetry? im loving keats and coleridge, romantic poets of course!
baybuscamperkid ·
yay for pod and the hitch hikers guide! read it years ago, great fun series. the 'dirk gently's holistic detective agency' series is awesome as well. my current MSN screen name is "to fly, all you must do is forget to fall" 😎

yes, my P.E. teacher bore the name Mr. Arthur, and thus it was always arthur dent for him.
we also named our art teacher slartibartfast

For people who paint beautiful pictures I love Don De Lillo "White Noise", also Jhumpa Lahiri, Arundhati Roy (the God of small things), Michael Oondatje (In the skin of a Lion). Also an Australian... Tim Winton's "dirt Music". As for poetry, I LOVE W.H. Auden and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. For mythical type books I like George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien. Non Fiction I like reading disturbing books like "The New Rulers Of The World" by John Pilger, and "Hegemony or Survival" by Noam Chomsky. I loved "Sophie's World" by Jostien Gaarder. It is a great overview of philosophy throughout history.
penguin ·
Yeah
love Hitchhikers. Got the DVDs of the series now, but the radio shows were little different from the TV series, still good to listen to though.
but have to thank a psycho exGF for introducing me to Terry Pratchett 🙂
Aside form that, just VW mags :P
Queen_Bug ·
I love classics. Dickens and Austin are two of my loves....my favourite book of all time is Lord of the Rings, I know its not really a "classic" but I think it should be considered one.
At the moment I've started on Don Quixote and War and Peace keeps begging to be read, but with so many trashy quick-read crime novels on the market, I keep putting the harder ones off...Particularly while I'm trying to study law, that takes a great deal of concentration.
ColumBUS ·
law takes the fun out of everything... :blush
during my schooling years many moons ago i read of mice and men, the great gatsby, pride and prejudice, brave new world, 1984, animal farm. many more. i couldnt believe it when people complained about having to read! the art of the written word is lost on my generation and it saddens me.
fortunately there are a few out there who still cling eagerly to their hordes of books (like me)!
helbus ·
I read aussieveedubbers
Queen_Bug ·
I dont think that the art of the written word is lost, I think that it has merely been superceded by the visual component. A lot of people of this generation still find books enjoyable, but sometimes its easier for some to just go and watch the movie.....I never do though, the movie often ruins the book. One good example was "The Count of Monte Cristo" the movie was nothing like the book....I left the theatre feeling cheated and robbed.
E ·
19th Century literature, High Literature, Thesis.
George Orwell, Brett Easton Ellis, Italo Calvino, these are a few of my favourite things.
I despise Dan Brown. "The Da Vinci Code" was the worst literary work I have ever read.
bus914 ·
Manuals, practical guides and other techy crap. I liked to read fiction when the days had more hours in them.
