farkin won't let you view images unless you're registered.

[Edited on 19/3/2005 by vwtyp2]

twoguns ·

use the browse button on the post reply page.

vwtyp2 ·

if you've got the pic stored on your hard drive, just click the browse button to find it, but it still has to be under 50kb

my daily driver was a Giant XTC3 before I got my licence

speaking of cycling, anybody doing the great brisbane bike ride tomorrow?

vwtyp2 ·

Used to race down hill had a Girvin Flex stem with Xtr then an Orange clocwork, also a Kona Sex-1 that was a cool bike
now that's older than old school.
I remember when the sex one's came out.
mates were riding Diamondback Dual-E's at the time.

just picked up this baby today to replace my previous hardtail..
that looks like a sweet trails ride, you'll have stacks of fun with that for sure. 🙂

geeez bikes get addictive and cost ya heaps!!
yes, easy to get addicted.
and can be expensive if you want it to be.
My DH rig would cost over $10k to replace.
I have just as much, if not, more fun riding my FR dually which is worth only 1/3 of that.
I ride with guys on sub $1000 bikes that are having just as much fun.
You don't need to spend big $$$ to have a great time.

Yep was a while ago , but thats what happens when ya turn 18 and get yo licence and a first car (Vw DUH!) So kinda replaced one passion with another!!
Do have a bit of a thing for lowrider bikes......

oval TOFU ·

wicked thread!.......

I used to ride a 2000 Giant Yukon til I sold it coz I went OS. I'm going to be getting a Raceline Max real soon (like, as soon as my bloody bug stops consuming all the contents of my wallet and bank account!). I'll be upgrading the flimsy Hayes Sole (single pot) with Hayes HFX-9XCs with 6" rotors. I could go for the DH type (and 8" rotors), but that would add an extra 200 grams to the bike - and I wanna start getting into trials.(gram counter!:P) It'll only be running Deore - I may switch to SRAM 5's or 9's in the future. Wouldn't mind getting a nice phat/fat 39mm Sun Rim Intense Mag 30 rim for the rear too... one thing at a time... one thing at a time.. get the bloody bike first!

vwtyp2 - wish I could have the cash for two dedicated bikes - you lucky sod!:kiss btw, great fotos of you airborne!

Chewy - like wise!

oval TOFU ·

so, what's everyone's fav riding hole?

PS: more pics of action!

oval TOFU ·

oh yeh, whats everyone's opinion about forks with lockout adjustment? Durable enough for bombing (I've got the Matinou Skareb's with lockout in mind)

Jak Rizzo ·

AAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhh u youngsters. I used to race downhill, but back then it was all about just flatout speed, Mamoth Mountain style rather then jumping buses. I was Central Coast Downhill champion 4 years in a row back in the late 90's (what are u laughing at, isn't that a title that everyone wants? ) & beat regularly the likes of Mick "airtime" Edwards who was a fully backed GT rider at the time, I also won on a fully rigged bike, couldn't do that today I'm afraid.
I also raced the State & National Cross Country Series, but now I'm concentrating on the 12 hour enduro races.
God I love mountain biking, I can go anywhere & I can piss off road riders when I tuck in behind them for a few k on the road, even with 2.35 inch tyres, before turning off to hit the next mountain. I generally train 2 hours a day min.
Great stuff!
regards
Jak

Man, can't believe I missed a bike thread!!
I'm a roadie at heart (I'll take you on Jak :thumb ) but have been getting into MTB orienteering for the last few years as well. Besides all my road/commuter bikes I have a Mongoose NX dual susp. and a Kona Stinky Dee. Need to add a good hard tail to the range though for the riding I do.
😎

vwtyp2 ·

hey TOFU, the max is a cool bike. I ride with a guy who has the Gravity.
with the upgrades you wanna do th yours, maybe you should look at that?
another guy I ride with has Fox F80rt forks with like a SPV valve in them.
He reckons their great, but take a bit of getting used to.
Check out this months AMB for the feature on Cudlee Creek (Fox Creek).
that's prob. my fave. riding spot.

Turbo54 ·

BENNETS or Kangarilla Forest!!!! I am running a bitzer. Craftworks Slalom frame, Alex Rims, old thrashed XT components, a chain that has been hammered together by rocks at the top of Sleeping Bag about 3 times, my GT flat pedals off BMX. It's a real hacker but great fun. Snapped a Giant clean in two about a year ago and just got the frame and put all my stuff on it. Dan when do you want to go out? Sunday Afternoon maybe??? Around 3:30. Let me know whens good for you.
T54
Also have a SE Assasin and a old Aluminium SLA race bike (1983) from my kiddy BMX days. Very 80's. Black frame with all gold brakes, rims, handlebars etc.

subaru.freak ·

I ride DH MTB, I ride it hard, but I'm one of those who doesn't enjoy the hype and pretenders that go along with it.

Jak Rizzo ·

subaru.freak wrote:I ride DH MTB, I ride it hard, but I'm one of those who doesn't enjoy the hype and pretenders that go along with it.
Like the guys u see riding on the road, only on weekends, full suspension, with slicks, fantastic😀

Bring back John Tomac, the all time legend mountainbiker!

NigeType3 ·

BMX Haro 24"
BMX GT 20"
Roady MonoC (carbon forks & rear end)

hahaha!:vader

vwtyp2 - I was considering the Gravity, sounds good with the Easton riser bar and stem Hayes 9's brakes and XT gear etc, but I dont think I really need most of it. I think I'd want a lockout on the forks rather than an extra 30mm of travel.. also.. i just plain dont have to moolah! (even though I can get it for $250 cheaper than retail!):repuke Whats there to get used to with your mate's Fox forks?

Wouldn't mind heading to Mt Buffalo before the snow season starts. I heard thats a nice playground out there

[Edited on 6/4/2005 by oval TOFU]

vwtyp2 ·

Whats there to get used to with your mate's Fox forks?
there's no compression over small bumps, only the big stuff.
so you can get out of the saddle and over the bars on climbs and there's no bounce. But when they take a hit, they behave like normal.

(even though I can get it for $250 cheaper than retail!)
He He, I work in a bike shop, so I get my stuff for wholesale.
and in most cases, less staff discount too. So most gear is wholesale - 10 to 15%.

If you need stuff, let me know, I may be able to look after you on price for some things.

oval TOFU ·

ah yeh, I've read up on forks with the threshold lockout - nice thing to have i'd reckon.

kustomkool ·

My son races BMX i used to be pro elite but cant be phucked these dayz...

oval TOFU ·

Just got my new Raceline the other day! I've upgraded the brakes to Hayes Nine's (from Soles single pots) and the forks to Splice's (w/ lockout). Bit heavier than the XC I was used to before, but much smaller frame and fun to boot! Can't wait to go urban bashing around the city!

Chewy ·

Sweet get some pics Tofu!
Making a few changes to my bike at the moment, building a custom fork using 1997 marzocchi uppers/internals and 2001 Z.5 20mm axle lowers. just need to make a couple of internal bits so they are compatible.
also selling the XT 4-pots, puttin the hayes cable on the front and XT V-Brakes on the rear .
Sold my DJ3s the other day for $300 too.
oh and Im going back to 26" wheels.

oval TOFU ·

I'll get some pics soon! Why the combination of the uppers and lowers? Sounds like you'll hava a bit of moding to do? And why the revert to cable brakes? I thought you'd at least want a top front brake and mayeb cable disc or V on the rear...

vwtyp2 ·

hey Chewy, what do you want for the XT's?

Tofu, a lot of DJ's run cable brakes cos they're cheaper to repair, and you can run them though a gyro.
I forgot about that fork price for you, but I'll get on it now I'm back from holidays.

Chewy ·

Why the forks? because old marzocchis are quality shit, everything bolts together (instead of being cyrofit and one peice lowers) and they are cheap.
With a 20mm axle and 100mm travel these forks will be as good as anything I will ever need.

Changing the brakes cause I need money, and the forks Z.5 lowers have Post mounts not IS mounts. And I dont need brakes this good.

VWtyp2, they are front and need new pads, just bled tho.
Was thinkin around $180

by the way, Im not a dirtjumper, theres just no trails or downhill around here!

helbus ·

I used to have a Malvern Star with 28" rims when I was a young boy, too high, nearly didn't make it to manhood with that bike 🙂

Didn't have a bike for a long time, but got me a Giant Iguana to go to work when I had no licence. Haven't ridden it for about 3 years now.

Cal67 ·

Hi Guys,
There some sweet bikes here, looks like there is a strong link between VW's and MTB's. Here is a pic of my bike and me having a bit of a huck. Just started the Sunshine Series downhill races a couple of weeks ago, I will be stoked if I get through the series with no breakages. Anyway any one up for a ride on the Goldie can contact me as I am out Mt Tamborine every weekend.
Greig

Cal67 ·

Damn re-sizing, I can never get it right.

oval TOFU ·

send it to me and I'll fix it up - I'll jack up the brightness too, so ppl can see your mug!

Ah, cool.. that old $ conundrum... hate that. I've been mulling around my shed looking at the VW stuff I could sell to make some more money, but I tell myself to think long-term and that it'll be easier to just have everything sitting there for me to put together instead of sourcing them again - P&C's, Genie extractors and exhaust, a split case gearbox, 36HP engine other crap....

I got such a good deal with my Hayes Nines that I couldn't pass them up! I'm one of those ppl that like to have some of those 'nice to have' upgrades. The single pots they replaced were terrible anyway - they felt worse than the generic V's on my old Giant Yukon

oval TOFU ·

It'll be sweet to get a nice wooden slater roof rack and strap ya bikes to it when you have to some far out place for a bomb..

Making the rack mount is the easy bit, getting a rack is the hard bit, definately worthwhile though even though I can't shuttle 5 people like I can in the ute.
Greig

oval TOFU ·

No worries, sorry about the colour differentiation in a couple pics..

Looks like you had a bit of an audience (look fit!) too.. You just running stock componants?

I really dig the slatter bike rack. Care to share what the front (MTB) axel retainer looks like and how it attatches to the rack? And the rear wheel/chainwheel too?

Jeza ·

Heys guys

Fantastic thread.

I ride both Road and XC Mountain- although I've been riding mountain for a lot longer.

However I hate mud.... so winter riding is usually rocky or on the road, and the occasional forte into muddy forest tracks to remind myself why I try to avoid the thick sludgy stuff. This usually results in a bike that doesn't work properly for several months.

The Mountain stead is a stock Scott Boulder...except the front forks - which got a much needed upgrade to Rock Shox Dukes when the bottom of the range Manitous gave up. The Beetle soaks up any other money I could otherwise be frivolously spending on the bikes... oh for a Ti frame with Fox shox 🙂

CU
Jeremy

vwtyp2 ·

hey Tofu, tou can get the Delta/Aztec rack mounts from your LBS.
If they haven't got them, ask them to order them from Dirt Works.
they are QR only, but you can get 20mm to QR adaptors.

oval TOFU ·

I think i've seen them in the catalogue - $89 right? Then its a matter of getting to gether the $300 for a slatter rack! (only a wooden slat rack will do on my oval!) I wonder you can hang the bike off the back of the bug on one of those rear mounted luggage carries - bumpy VW ride may not do it any favours during transit though (if it's not mounted by the forks)

[Edited on 19/4/2005 by oval TOFU]

Go on to FARKEN.net and grip sport do some cool bike carrier stuff.
there should be a link as they sponsor that forum.

Chewy ·

Farkin with an I, not E.

Cal67 ·

Hi Guys,
Here is the photos of the bike rack I made up, as mentioned all I need to do is either make an adaptor or by one.
The bike has been modified with an XT medium cage rear dereailer, Aireal Chain guide (42T), Maxxis Highroller and Minion, ODI lock on grips apart from that it is standard.:thumb

Cal67 ·

Cal67 ·

vwtyp2 ·

I wonder you can hang the bike off the back of the bug on one of those rear mounted luggage carries
it's a bit tricky, cos there's really nowhere to attach the top straps, apart from the door frame.
I used to carry my DH bike on the back of my '64 "Bluey".
the wheelbase of the bike was pretty much the same as the width of the bumper brackets.
I just sat one wheel on each, and run a tie down strap from the bars to the wheel arch, and from the seat post to the other wheel arch. never a prob.
I used one of the strap on bike racks on my Karmann Ghia, and never had any drama.

empi ·

I like the mods Cal67 way cool . been scratchin me head as to how to do it... only if i can fit the lowrider bike......

NigeType3 ·

Sorry chewy this is better

http://www.farkin.net/

oval TOFU ·

my new baby.. second to my bug of course! 😉

oval TOFU ·

.

NigeType3 ·

mmmmm that looks sweet
THe other weekend one of the guys got in the top 20 DH with that bike.
He is a great rider but also said the bike was better than the old 125 he had.

oval TOFU ·

exact same frame and brand? He would've upgraded most of the componants though..

vwtyp2 ·

yep, they're both made by Kinesis.
so are the Avanti Manic and Hot Dog, Diamondback BSX, Haro Escape series, and many others.
Kinda like how the Raceline DH bike has the same frame ax my Oryx, which is the same as the Azonic Eliminator, and the Mongoose DH bike last year (the blue one) was from the same factory)
I had a Haro 8.3 last year, and the year before. Definately dialed geometry.
Kinesis is now gonna market frames with their own name on them.

oval TOFU ·

I think the 8.3 frame looks great - bit like a split ute - a bit humpy up at the front where the top tube meets the head stem - just looks well proportioned...

Whats it like riding a hardtail DH instead of something with 4"+ rear travel? More of a challenge?

vwtyp2 ·

at one of our more pedally DH tracks, I was about 15 seconds faster on the hardtail, just cos it pedals so much better.

this is now why I got the X3 instead of the 8.3. 6" on the front and 7" on the back, and I can still climb hills. awesome.
and speaking of copies, the Haro uses the ATLAS design rear end, as developed by Ellsworth. No wonder it rides so nice.

NigeType3 ·

Riding a hardtail on the course Im talking about would be hard as hell. Its a fast course but bloody rocky so it would be hard to keep ahardtail pointing in the right direction. The guy im talking about was only 7 seconds of the leader and 13 seconds faster than me.

I stuffed up my start but for the rest of it felt like I was traveling at light speed. When hitting the rocks it was BAM DA BAM BAM all the way to the finish. I was well stoked with my run and had some good coments from other riders on the hill. And this guy cained me on a hard tail.

oval TOFU ·

Sounds awesome Nige -sounds like a heap fo fun too! - well, there's in centive to practise more 🙂

oval TOFU ·

How much do all y'all bikes weigh? Mine's just under 15kg i think - seems a bit heavy for a hardtail?

And wheres ppl's fav places to ride in Melb?

(just Read up on Cudlee Creek in this issue of AMB - yum!)

Turbo54 ·

Go up to Buller in the off season. I have travelled over a couple of times. Awesome.
Chairlift up - downhill down. The people are great. You can stay in the Uni of Melbourne's Chalet for about 20 bucks a night and the chairlift was about 60p/day. Lots of local riders so show you the way and if you do go... see if you can get on a run called shoehorn or something (cant remember) its a cross country / downhill that is about 15kms long.
I wiped out 3 times on it but everyone did. Word of advice. Take as much spare parts as you can. Because there is only 1 bike shop they can charge whatever they want. A chain was nearly $80. Have fun. I went in the first week back of school in jan so it was me and a few friends, some locals and we had the steep hills all to ourselves.
Turbo54

NigeType3 ·

That sounds cool my mate Tim and I were only last night talking about a MTB holiday somewhere and Cudlee Creek did come up. Tim has one of those people movers for all his kids and where thinking bikes on trailer 4 riders and big road trip over to Adelade. With four of us fuel will be OK and no loss or damage of bikes from baggage handlers.
Just need 2 more riders.

Practice and more practice me thinks hit up another DH race track last monday was heeps of fun the ground was nice a tacky which led to some nice railing corners. Unfortunatly the forcast for the race this weekend is rain so it will turn to goop.
It all good Nige

oval TOFU ·

Sounds so sweet Turbo54! I'm hoping I can make it up there before the snow season - actually, it would be perfect if I can get up there just befoe the season starts, then I can stay up there and snowboard when it gets deep enough! .... dream dream dream...

I wonder if Mt Hotham runs their chairlifts during the off season like Buller does?

Turbo54 ·

yeah Hotham runs. The downhills are a lots more basic and fast. Lots of long fast firetracks.
Buller was the pic because it has both, fast sections but lots of technical tracks through scrub.
Either would be good. There is a shop called NRG on both mountains run by the same people, give them a call about when the seasons are on. Think they might be closed now.
T54

Chewy ·

finnished the custom fork! Its a beaut, I love it.
turned out as good as I could have hoped.
A 40mm spacer a mate made was added to move the mounting point for the internal assembly up in the lowers to allow the 1997 Z.1 internals to fit in 2001 Z.5 20mm lowers.
mmm all bolt up

Chewy ·

The spacers the big cylinder at the bottem.
This made it a bitch to assemble the forks as the damper/stanchion had to be installed first, then the bushings and seals installed with the stanchions in the way.

Chewy ·

yum
4" travel.
HSCV High speed compression valving
20mm QR lowers
Open oil bath
Bolt on disc mount
Bolt on crown
Bolt on arch
Adjustabe rebound, compression damping and pre-load
made in italy
beautiful

[Edited on 29/4/2005 by Chewy]

Chewy ·

Oh and they've cost me about $100 😀

oval TOFU ·

you da man! Can't beat it at that price! -and the satisfaction you did it all yourself!

vwtyp2 ·

great work.
too bad it's only 100mm 😎
for dirt jump, that's ample though:kiss

Chewy ·

Yea but its a good 100mm :kiss
enough for all my needs..
Need to put some 7.5wt oil in them tho as the 10wt I have in them is still a little slow even with the dampening as fast as it goes.

oval TOFU ·

I wish i could lurch...

i think my bike is too heavy...

Chewy ·

Too heavy?? 15kg is allright.. my bike was 17.1kg with the boat anchor DJ3s on it.
Its down to about 15.5 now and when I put the 26" wheel on the back, which is really light, it should go under 15.

10 splines is ISIS right?

Whats a strong cheap BB?... 😠

NigeType3 ·

Far out man that looks painfull. Is that a bmx bottom bracket or mtb.
If bmx I have good kranks & cromo shaft that won't brake Im not using.

My season ended this week. Alfter prcticing for DH race last weekend I must have tweeked my good knee (didn't realize ar time) but the day after I was getting strong shooting stabing pains through my knee as I walled.
Dosn't look good as this pain is caused buy over extending the knee joint which mean a ligament tear of somekind will be seeing specialist soon.
dam knees

Chewy ·

Hey Nige, its an MTB BB which runs a BMX 10 spline axle.
Whats the axle you have??
Could be interested in grabbin it off ya
Cheers

oval TOFU ·

ouch-yes

part of the fun - supposedly yes too...

yeh, time for some nice fat Truvative arms now...

What happened exactly?
Something like this link? http://singlespeedsteed.co.uk/vids/kettlesdrop.mov

Chewy ·

I was jumping my dirtjump to flat.. for some stupid reason.
Wont be doing that again any time soon.

The axle is pretty BMX specific
19mm / 145mm 10 spline

vwtyp2 ·

hmm.. euro bb shell too.
maybe some DMR Cheiftains.
tubular crmo is probably more suited to your needs than forged alloy.

Chewy ·

They are square section CrMO BMX cranks, with a BMX spindle in euro BB with press fit bearings.
I dont think I will be snappin them any time soon
Just need a better spindle.

NigeType3 ·

Ill dig em out tonight and try email a pic to ya
Oh shit its shopping night tonight Ill do it as soon as I can .
I know there not profill but similar

Chewy ·

Thought you guys would like to see this.
A mate did this on the Weekend..
The landings out of shot down in the lower right corner.
Well over 20ft.

Chewy ·

He was landing with barely a noise from his bike, was smooth as.
He ended up doing it 6-7 times.

Starbug ·

this thread looks like more fun than i can possibly imagine...

i got a cheap mtb for daily commuting (about 15kms a day) and i love it!
but i cant even jump it up to the kerb! i find this strange, seeing as how when i was much younger on my old mtb i could do some crazy shit (for a girl) and used to ride some decent trails.
it could just be the 10 or so kilos in the rear basket, or...

Nice one.
I hate jumps where i can't see the landing from take off.

I munched my foot 2 weekends ago on a 6 foot drop so decided to upgrade my bike for next race. (if I can't ride it I like to play in the shed)

Got new FSA cranks, E thirting chain device, X9 trigger & der, pro tapper bars and SIC stem (bolts to top of boxxer crown).
Im not doing this cause I just have shit loads of cash but everything is just flogged out so bad on my bike as it hasent been replaced for a few years.

Didn't now how i was going to perform this year so I put off upgrading untill I new it was worth it. Last race I was in the top 3 of my grade again (vets) and just missed the top 20 by a few seconds. So with more time on the bike and luck I may make it.

Also Im having problems posting pics of cranks shall I just email them ?

Cheers Nige
