The Notch is quietly taking shape , panels ready for paint etc , body on hold til cage goes in and all welding etc done. Car will be a 2 seater only , back seats gone and filled up with bars. Once fitted i can get some paint on it and paint cage body colour.
A nice squareback was too good to resist and i needed some wheels. Butt ugly front indicators being late model (soon sorted , if not i'll soon kick them off the freakin car!!!! ) but a nice car either way. Few things to sort but no major biggies , few w'ends work. Nicely slammed , throw my brms on and we have ignition Houston馃檪 !
On reflection the car has the lines of a drunk hippo on heels but ugly cars look soooo good lowered , i suppose it's all about taste , beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.
Got some plans for this baby !

Yippie now home! Drives like a dream though box is a little noisy (maybe no oil?) .Picked up this morning and spent the day detailing the beast. Lovely and straight ! A few small jobs needed , a little tidy here and there and we're good to go.
BRM's get tyres t'w so they be on before the w'end and it's being slammed the next week. Gonna be low! Rear and side venetions ordered , headlight grills to fit and swap over to early bumpers with flat4 towel rails.
Toying with also fitting the turbo thomas extractors as these are not long for this world but we'll see on that. Apart from that and an oil change/service and thats pretty much it. Guards will get swopped in time with early indicators.
Can't get over how comfortable the car is and how well it drives , slamming should soon sort that out! LOL

Rubber is 165 rear , 145 front. The cars going 2 at the back and 3 up front so it will be pretty low. On BRM's i reckon thats about all your gonna get to fit and thats what i was told by alot of folks aswell. The 165's will be tight fit by the looks of it. Only other option is lo/pro's which is a matter of taste and not mine to be honest , not on a 15" rim , has to be a big rim to carry that look off. Matter of taste.
Was going to get the whitewalls(thin) done this w'end but with new tyres they have to have over 2K on them before they can be whitewalled. Their is an oil that is put into the tyre before it's stored and this oil seeps out whilst the tyre is new and fitted to a rim. This then greys the white paint and looks shite. Have to put that idea on hold for a while then , bugger!
Having fun with this "Pimp my square" phase i'm going through but Paddo fear not , the Notch is cooking away in the background , alot of money being spent aswell!
Funny how projects go but some how i've ended up with a restowagen and what will be a very race/rod inspired Notch. Funny old world!

Venetions all in! All 5 of them!! I like that panelvan look and went for a resto version using the venetions. Not cheap to do but I'm stoked with how it's come out , bit different and worth working over Easter for!!!!.
Visor and rain deflectors go on t'w time permitting and as mentioned it's getting lowered on Thursday. The exhaust will get replaced with the Turbo Thomas as this one's had it and will scrape too much anyhow.

Well after some careful measuring and scratch free mounting the visor's on. Has been set as low as i can and to try and work off the roof line as best as. Bit by bit and ALOT more bling my restowagon is taking shape. The swap to early bumpers and slammed will give it what it really needs. Lowering happens this Thursday and i'm like a kid waiting for xmas:thumb

Well we've got the square closer the ground. In type3 selecta talk it's gone to stage 2 lowering. Wanted to go a little lower but have to realistic for lots of sensible reasons , sorry i'm getting old and drive Sydney roads! Saying that a quick drive has already shown that i chose wisely as i hit a few big pot holes and heard the odd rub , drove over a speed bump and heard a slight scrape would have been a nightmare if id gone stage 3. Car still drives nice suprisingly and will get a new set of gas shocks next w'end to replace the knackered old ones and some new lower ball joints.
Gearbox noise is from a worn main bearing and will require a recon or box swap. I will use the box from my Notch as it's an L bug box which will be great for the Square , taller gears and straight swap. As the Notch is getting an attitude a new close ratio is required which i'll keep my eyes open for in the future.
Lots of w'end / tidy / bolt on jobs to keep me busy on the square but so happy i've got vw wheels again. Managed one pic before battery went! Bugger!

Frenzix the rims were bought in from CIP in the US. Saved about $300 that way buying a set. Originally for the Notch but that will now run Centerlines or Erco's which again will come in from US (Direct) and be heaps cheaper.
Went 2 up front and 1 (inner) on rear. As mentioned it could be lower but would be just too much of a pain driving in Sydney. Also my girlfriends got a fat arse so it will drop when she gets in, LOL!!! God hope she doesnt see this LOL
The only other option is to put it on airbags , there is a kit available at about $3,500! One hell of alot of money but would be the ultimate.
Swapping bumpers is next job!

LOL , how low do you go, seriously the car can just about ride Sydney roads. Went on my first cruise to the northern beaches and it did rub few times aswell as the front being mega light. Pull the old shocks off next w'end and replace with new koni's so hoping that will sort out the ride for the better. Bumpers will also be test fitted to see what mods i have to do. Worth it though , should work out okay along with new light lenses. Did have a few reservations about going early on a late but up until now it's going okay and i'm well happy with the square. Lots more to happen yet!

Just bought some Pop outs for it and a 12v early wiper motor for twin speed power but not looking forward to fitting that......................gotta take the whole dash out to get to it!!!! Nice.....NOT!!!!
I fitted some firestone F560's on the front when I changed the wheels and it raised the frt about 1.5".................didn't hit anything in the usual spots but the car looked shite...........front end was almost higher than the back!!! Switched back to Conti eco contacts and BANG..........no worries!!!! 馃榾

Cars settled now and sitting nicely. Change to new Koni's up front has made a big difference , steering still pretty light though! Fitting the KYB gas rear ones next w'end. Hope this helps with some of the rubs i'm getting while crusing around. If i had a whitewall it would have been rubbed off by now! Guards are being rolled this week as i can JUST about get a finger between the guard and tyre.
Also made a start on swapping the bumpers , rear first. I have decided to "slot" the bumper brackets for 2 reasons. I want the bumper to sit a little further out than normal and also it makes it easier to fit and adjust. I'm after a longer , lower look if that makes sense????
The rear is easy enough and there are no issues with the FLAT4 over rider /towelrails. The front is a different matter!
I love the shape of the late type 3's but the bumper and indicators are a different matter. The indicator lenses are huge and look awful. Apart from welding up the hole in the guard and fitting early style ones he only other mod you can do is to buy clear ones ( which i have on order ).
HOWEVER when you fit early front bumpers with rails on a late T3 it doesnt clear the lense properly. What is need is a flush fit one but there isnt such a thing. Until now!
Sitting on my workbench is a half finished flush fitting lense , approx 20mm flusher all round. Test fitted they look really trick and a huge improvement. I tested on some old lenses and found a way of shaping them without breaking or cracking them. It takes a while to do but i will end up with flush fitting lenses and able to fit the rails up front aswell. This mod can also be done to the rear but not to such a degree. Maybe in by about 15mm from top . This i'm going to do with the all red lenses i have. Simple stuff i suppose , alot of time though.
Got alot more bling etc coming for it and the biggie is the flat4 full roof rack for it that should be fitted very soon. I can here Kai screaming at me but it has to be done . In readyness for some summer crusie and camp outs i have got a huge tent , massive thing , big car port on it. I will actually have use for a rack now aswell as somewhere to show off the esky's , longboard skater and dragster bike!
Oh yea also got some new plates. Nothing fancy just somethign to get it of those new ones issued. only cost $50 and $100 a year.

Okay bumpers are go! Anyone wanting to put early bumpers onto a late do it , it's easy enough. As said the rear was pretty much a bolt in fit. Before mounting the early rear bumper and brackets i lengthened the bolt holes on the brackets by 15mm. This allows the bumper to clear nicely , sit out slightly and gives me the look i was after.
The front has been just as easy though requires welding. I marked the original bracket where it came through the body work. I then took the original off. Then fitted the early bumper to how i wanted it to sit and again marked where it went through the body work. From this i cut the late brackets allowing a large overlap and likewise the early ones. I then slotted the holes on the brackets . Clamped together and test fitted they fit great. Again i have pulled them out by about 20mm to try and gain a longer look. All was going great until i had a call from my mate with the welder to tell me he couldnt make it! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Looks like it will be done t'w so i'll be able to show you the front. This front bumper swap will only work if you are changing the front indicator set up. I'm running towelrails and they foul the indicator lense. Ideally a swap to early wrap arounds or dome type is best suited for that early look however requires a guard swap or similar which means paint etc etc. I have chosen to flush fit the standard lenses by about 17mm which not only looks pretty trick ( say it myself) but clears the towelrails. I now have some clear ones which i will do the same to as soon as i get enough courage to rip into $130 worth of lenses. Also started flush fitting the all red rear lenses today , very slowly , again big bucks!!!!!!
I knew the bumpers would make a big difference and i'm chuffed with how they look. Anyone wants to do the same call me and i'll gladly help you out.
Put a final coat of paint on the roof rack , changed the flat4 's colour from silver to white. Taken alot of tricky taping up but worth the time. The white colour goes heaps better with the rest of the car and gives it a different look. Will be on next w'end hopefully.

Finally after alot of steady handed trickery i have lense #1 done and flusher than a panty pad and low as it can go. Could go flusher if i started to gring away the actual light assembly, LOL, which i will do now ive thought about it. So okay heres the nearly finished version of lense #1.
Some of you may think this is a load of tosh but i have taken this from a drunken late night staring at my car for hours and realising how freakin ugly these lenses are to actually having a desired outcome and not messing up some lenses. Without changing the whole indicator , welding or paint i'm chuffed to f##k! Lost over 25mm sticking out! I have to state that no cracks splinters etc were put on the lense. They were crazed and worn thats why i took the plunge.

Have some clear ones now but will wear these a while ( takes ALOT of time to do this!) Soon to come as is white flat 4 rack!!

I really like what you did with the turn signal lenses. I have always hated the way they were so humongus. I have been wondering about the clear lenses, but have heard that sometime they don't fit too well.
How did you maintain the right contour as you ground or sanded it down? What did you use? Did you make any sort of mold or pattern.

Will all come apart again when the bumpers are rechromed but will polish up ok for now.

Nice work, squares are great, and you've done a spectacular job on a late model one.
Those indicator lights of yours are fanstatic, thats the one turn off with the late T3's is the HUGE indicators.

Bit of an update!
My trip to the UK did have it's upside as i managed to bag a few things for the square. The yellow tyre pin stripes were a nightmare to fit but now are all good. I've added some rain deflectors which fitted a treat and look right at home on the car. Finally got the all red rear lenses fitted and also the flush mounted clear fronts which came out looking better than i thought. The turbothomas full system is quieter than i thought but makes a nice thud all the same.
Future plans are roof repainted , new B/J's , lowered another inch at the front , electronic ignition and a tune. Still after some driving lights though , need 3 of them! Apart from a new set of carpets thats pretty much it , oh yea a new box is required fairly soon aswell! It's an on going project and hopefully will be cruised all summer long! Go the square!!!!!

Sam the headers are 1 5/8" . Good for up to around. 1914cc. Motor is a strong 1600 , Next week will sport the electronic ignition and a set of 40's. Nothing too flash i'm afraid.
