Through no choice of mine it was time for a new bug.
I searched for a while as i had realized i dont have time for another build up.
This one was just about done. A few things here and there but basically done.
Came from Canberra and has been fully rebuilt. A Peter Shelley stock 1916 and just about every thing is new

Bizarre ·
New headliner, carpet, rubbers, seats brakes, motor - a full rebuild.
A head of sound deadner and rust stopper
Even a new dash was put in
Lucky for me - the owner wanted to move on

Had a few troubles with transfering the rego to NSW - but all is sweet now
Bizarre ·
Richard @ V Force has put new struts in and some new Spyders
FInally settled on 195 65s rear and 195 60's front.
These are 4 bolt 130 pcd - so a simple set up
Marty (as in Matini Olive) is a rack and pinion 1975 L bug
Hence the name change from Blue 74L :thumb
Bizarre ·
Thanks Lee - it took me a while to realize the time and effort required
and from the rear
Bizarre ·
and a favourite pic i took today

noice.. clean car
Bizarre ·
The motor is a 1916 but runs stock exhaust and carbs
So all was changed was pistons and barrels. This has taken it to 50 ponies at the wheels and that is a nice improvement.
I miss my Boxster wheels from the last one but the spiders are great. Reckon for 15" they are the best choice. 6" fits lovely under the guards and cheap to boot
I am just going to drive and enjoy this one
EgeWorks ·
Very clean looking car. Do you reckon you will be able to hold out on doing any more mods on it? Also, what is that thing in front of the wiper box? Fuel breather?

Gee she's nice Barry. Are you going to do any carb and exhaust work??
Bizarre ·
NO :bounce
beerdoc ·
Looks good
Bizarre ·
OK - was gunna wait till the rear was lowered but its been a while and i is wrapped over the clock.
Been looking for years for one of these.
Had a bit of fun getting it in. Knocked a wire off the speedo and it sent the immobilizer stupid. Took longer to sorth that than put it in!
Also got an original Empi woodgrain dash set. Its LHD but i think i have gotten away with a bit of artistic licence.
The pop outs have joined in
as has the shifter
It is a CSP short shift.
It is one of the best things i have bought.
You can also see the Dunnydoor brake handle. Nice little touch
I picked up some ratty OG 75L bug bumpers with the rubbers.
A bit of hammer work and some hammertone and they are pretty straight.
Sadly the rear got wiped at Balmain the other day and i have had to bolt the strip back down
A degree pulley has also been added to help in timing
A VW 1303 L badge has also made the rear.
Need to work out what to do with the 2 spare holes though
Running boards. I HATE with a passion the cheap ones and the German ones aint much better. A cheap alternative was the plain aluminium ones with a coat of black
Got a few other mods in the works.
But i need to get the bum down an inch and change the torsion bar grommets before it starts knocking

Hey mate, do your poly bushes squeak. Mine did. Had to take them out - was driving me nuts!

Bizarre ·
Thanks guys.
the polys are fine.
Think we might have given them a squirt of silicon - cant remember.
It is certainly firm.
Stired - but not shaken 😀
Bizarre ·
OK - been playing again. Cant help myself.
Anyway - was too low for an old bugger like me. Raised the front. Went to smaller springs (10"? with a helper spring). That put the front higher than the back. Only by 20mm or so - but it looked wrong to me
So i have raised the rear one outer spline. Perfect now as far as i am concerned.
I have a new set of KYB shocks turning up to replace the cofabs and then i will be done.

yeah sure, you keep telling yourself that. It's never done. 😉

even though you lifted her she still looks sweet nice rims to!
Bizarre ·
To start with it was about 50mm off the rear tyre. He was then dropped to about 10mm below the tyre
Now sits about 20mm above. So about 30mm from begining
Supers look better lowered - not slammed
Bizarre ·
Well the KYB Gas turned up and put them in today.
Totally amazed. They were as hard as to squeze to put in and i thought this was going to stuff the ride.
the ride became pretty hard when i put they Type 3 torsions in and was concerned these were going to make it worse.
But the reverse has happened.
This thing is like on rails but smooth as. The KYBs seem to work "with" the heavier torsions and is a smoother ride now.
Really happy with the set up now.
Did a bit of carb work and this thing jumps like a scalded cat now. Wonderful street car /daily driver
Think i will start playing with the bus now

Ok.... been months.

Well - got fed up with crappy engine mounts and not having propper heat
So - got playing again
First
Some flanged ceramic coated heater boxes
While i was at it i had a spare engine cowl i got powder coated
TO fix the engine shudders (that a crappy Empi quality front engine mount couldnt! 😠 ) we went Berg / Porshe cradle mount
Also got rid of the jello late gear box cradle and went early with poly mounts
The handling is different to say the least
Engine noise is definitely transmitted into th car but the gear changes are SUPER SMOOTH!
No more rocking back and forth in the gear stick
Well worth a days work 😍
Also got myself an angle grinder and got rid of that hood / engine lid seal lip
For a car that lives out side 24/7 they are NOT the best idea.
Anyway - ground off the offending metal and put a Mexican seal on
MUCH better
Pictures to follow
pete wood ·
they're a fantastic upgrade those berg mounts. makes you wonder why VW never went with something similar. the front tranny mount on porsche boxes is very similar to it...only bigger of course. BTW, I like your abarth style exhaust. sound good?
Bizarre ·
Living out side has taken its toll on Marty 🙁
That STUPID system of trim fir the hood/bonnet/whatever and enging lid has rusted.
It is just spot welded on and water WILL get in underneath
This is what i pulled off
Rubbed it all back and painted (🤪) it up.
Martini Olive is a BITCH to match
Its not TOO bad from 20 feet.
Going to do a respray one day - so main aim is to stop the rust and look OK-ish
Pretty happy with the outcome
And them i put a Mexican seal on
Bizarre ·
Other thing i did was something i said i would never do again
I put a set of dual carbs back on
I picked up a set of dual DRLA Dellortos
Took my time and jetted then up pretty well with the help of Richard Holzl
Decent linkage and it runs sweet.
Yeah - i know i have a filter between pump and carbs - but i need it for the line change.
I need to but a conversion joiner thing
I just love the sound of induction in the morning.
No difference in consumption, maybe a little better
Reckon i have picked up a few ponies as well
colonel mustard ·
No plans for a different exhaust mate??? I haven't seen this thread before, but I have to say, most of the stuff you have done is what I want to do with my super. I love how it looked with the spyders when you had it low low. it looked fantastic. I have been thinking about those wheels for while, mainly due to the simplicity of not having to do anything with different stud patterns.Taking off those seal tracks makes it look ALOT!! better, an amazing difference.
Love your car mate 🙂
trickysimon ·
Looking good👍
Whats that big thing on your dizzy?
Bizarre ·
electronic module
It is a Scorcher
Uses standard Bosch module, cap rotor etc etc
sorry to be a pest.... but where did you get the replacement seal for the bonnet and engine lid from?? also, do you leave the orginal style seal closest to the bottom of the windscreen?
Bizarre ·
You can either buy it from places like Vintage where it is a 2 piece kit or go to Clarke Rubber and buy some there
You need a profile like this
You use the original style seal closest to the bottom of the windscreen
Some people use the clip / channel there but that was my main problem area.
So you need to glue in in position
My hood probabaly doesnt sit perfect - especially for out side life.
I could spend time and get it to "press" into the seal to get it to keep more water out, but if you dont do it perfect i fint the hood rips the seal off
I have "bogged" an answer by using a bit of Clarke Rubber stuff with the balloon cut off.
I have run this along the top of my hood and it presses into the top seal giving a fairly good seal
I dont mind the "accent" line
As you can see - i park under a jaccaranda
This is within 5 minutes of being cleared
It is worse in winter when you get all the little leaves
colonel mustard ·
Ah! jaccaranda! I'm allergic to that!
thanks for the photo's. very informative.
Look out, there will be a copy seen soon!
mine (73L) will look similar externally, except im going to have flat black accents (headlight trims, bumpers)... and mine will be a bit more rat look with multi colored panels (not like Col Look though). I also had the trim removed, but the holes are still there. I have a bit of rust to remove when it goes to the body shop to fix the rear end damage... so it will have the cal look seals, and a late rear valance (sqaure cutouts, no bulge). As I said earlier, loving the Vfroce wheels and have been thinking about them for a while (your car being the inspriation), with federal tires {caught the bug for these whilst working on/driving Mazda SP23's}. Im also going for the 1302 tail lights, just because i hate the elephant feet.
Love it mate. good stuff 🙂

Craig S ·
All of the Oval Warriors like to make rude comments about elephant feet, but I don't mind them, and Marty's new bum looks OK to me 😎 . Those CSP LED ones that Colonel posted a bit further up are more what I'd like, but I've got a lot of other things to work on before I throw a significant amount of Euros at buying a set.
Colonel, you are replacing your elephant feet with something earlier aren't you? I would have thought after already being rear-ended by the cops that you'd want something bigger and brighter? 😉
Craig
colonel mustard ·
Well, If a cop can't drive properly, who will be able to?? thus.... Tombstones are on the list. Not too concerned about the lights currently though, but if a set of late guards (73 onwards) came up for next to nothing, I'd go for it. Colonel is a bit of a rat car... but one day I hope its orignal...ish.
colonel mustard ·
Having said that, I only feel that I would like it to look originalish, is due to talking to Dave Carter - who thinks I should keep it looking 1303ish. The truth is, my car is at LEASSSSSSSSSST 5 years off looking as good as barry's or Dave's.
If it were me, I'd get the csp smoked one's, I just find their prices a bit up there, but the products look amazing.
1303Steve ·
Hi Jason
I have some rear 73 on mudguards that you have if can get them picked up, they have a bit of history, they're off Barry's old blue bug.
Steve

1. That sounds awesome Steve, You're a champ. I will talk to Dave (stidub) to see if he may be able to pick them up while he is down in the new year.

New tailights are an improvement over the originals I reckon & heaps better than the clear bastards.

Bizarre ·
Dropped it off at SAS for a test on the dyno to see how the carbs went
Pretty happy with the whole set up
66 HP with the Dells compared to 50HP with the 34Pict
Still running a restrictive exhaust. An getting a custom made jobbie this year.
Reckon i will get to 70HP with a propper exhaust.
This has a mild cam and stock unported 040 heads
Seems a a bit lean on the idles, mains are perfect and a tad rich on the airs
My 1776 had 61 ponies with a similar set up - so pretty happy with this
trickysimon ·
Dammit you beat me 😂
What rpm is that at?
What ratios?
Bizarre ·
Its a stock single sided IRS gear box
Was done in 3rd gear - will work out what ration when i get home and look at my manual
Bizarre ·
Exhaust time
The near stock exhaust is comming off and Richard Holzl is making an exhaust for me
Start with one of these
Add a box of these
Then with a dummy motor and a dummy rear valance a lot of cutting, welding, measuring, Stella and Peroni's you slowly get to this stage
We finished the day here
Will do a trial fit next Saturday
Will be interesting to see what difference it makes.
Going to go back to SAS when it is on
Fully merged, equal length and tried to keep the same number of bends
The header will be ceramic coated when its done and a stainless steel in/out muffler will go on
This all lives ub under the body work with not much at all sticking out
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
Thats a crazy exhaust system. Alot of work has gone into that alot nore than any shop would do unless you made them do it.
Post up a video of it when its on so we ccan hear it.
waveman1500 ·
That's a wild exhaust! Love the car, very nice. Some nice modifications you've been doing to this "stocker" too.
vassy66T1 ·
The stella and peronis appeal to me greatly.
That is one fancy exhaust 👍
Craig S ·
Hi Barry, this is a question of curiosity rather than criticism, but why do this full custom exhaust when there are plenty of seemingly good ones available at a reasonable price out on the market? Is it for the challenge, or because what's available is not good, or why?
Of course it looks marvellous and I'm envious and I look forward to seeing the impact on the dyno.
Cheers
Craig
Bizarre ·
It is because i have a "window of opportunity" in the bank ballance to cry once
Basically the $500 specials from "the shops" are built to a price
The stainless turns brown within the year and a lot of the are not even correct firing order
The collector should be 4-3-2-1 but you have a look and a lot of the $400 ones are 4-2-3-1
they almost all either stick out the back or hang down
this will be completely tucked away
It is almost also a project for Richard as he want to finally sell these competively .
They DO make real power.
I will post the dyno sheet as to what the difference is.
I made 17 HP by putting on the dells
I will be interested in what these make.
So - again - it is a cry once for a true bolt on HP that will last for a VERY long time
SuperOwen ·
What diameter is it? I'd like to see some back to back testing of the different firing order exhausts and see what kind of difference there is.
barls ·
looks almost as much of a work of art as mine mate.
Joel ·
bugger me, and i thought welding up that one of mine was a prick of a job, hope you both had a few sherberts handy for that construction
nice work, that will sound sweet as with a nice muffler on it
Craig S ·
Thanks Barry,
Look forward to seeing the results, and if Richard is going to sell them, then I may be standing in the queue.
trickysimon ·
Looks great!
Also keen to see if it was worth spending the money rather than buying a sidewinder.
Looks like its gunna sit lower than my sidewinder?
Bizarre ·
SuperOwen wrote:What diameter is it?
It is 1 3/8's going to 1 1/2"
The firing order has a lot to do with simplicity in construction
Have a look at some of the pictures of the various exhaust on different websites and it isnt working
if you have the 4-3-2-1 you get a real scavenging effect that almost sucks the gasses out
they changes only the exhaust on Snotty and they picked up 20km/hr down the straight
So - i am hoping for a noticeable difference
Otherwise i will delete this post 🤪
Simon - i really doubt it will sit lower
I dont believe you see much at all below the rear valance
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
If you want HP and something that really works you only go custom. most of the off the shelf stuff is rubbish and cheap quality and yes you are right in saying that 90% of the systems on the market have the pipes into the collector in the wrong firing order. I have seen gains of up to 5hp on formula Vees by simply changing the firing order to be correct into the collector.
Bizarre ·
Almost...................
Its all flanged and ceramic coated
I have the stainless muffler, pipe and flange.
We have tack welded it in position
I need to get another mate to stainless weld the muffler side
Hoping work is quiet on Friday so i can piss off early and fit it
Then back off to the dyno to see what it has done
Bizarre ·
Well - its in
VERY happy
No HUGE power gain but man - the FAT torque it now has!
Pulls from down low
Surprisingly it isnt that loud. Burble yes - loud no
Off to the dyno this week hopefully
Tucks nicely up out of the way
Only thing i would have changed is to have used black for the ceramic coating
anyway................... more soon
I'm off for a (another) drive
trickysimon ·
Looks good 👍
Did you have to rejet?
Bizarre ·
No yet
Seems to be running ok as it is
Will get a reading on Tuesday hopefully and then see what jets are available in the stash

Baz you have got to admit the man is a master of exhausts,I've seen him work first hand and Genius is the best i can come up with and he doesn't mind a beer either which makes him a great bloke.
Craig Torrens ·
Not sure "master" and "genius" are the right words 🙅..........I mean have a look at the weld quality 😊
Should wake it up though Baz !
grumble ·
He is a man not a machine,I don't bag anyone who can fabricate a system like this freehand! If you want machine welds buy an off the shelf product.
Joel ·
off the shelf with good welds?
be sure to exclude empi systems from that search
colonel mustard ·
if you want an exhaust that works exclude empi from your search.

Picked up some Recaro's out of a Proton Satria GTi off ebay the other day
Virtually brand new.
Taken straight out in 2003 and then "wrapped in plastic"
I prefer the headrest than the wings i had before.
Plus these sit at a lower height. I can just about see the whole speedo now 🤪
Reckon the colour is a close match. Apparently they came in grey. That would have been better - but for the price i am happy.
Already have a Recaro base on VW runners. So they just bolt straight on.
Just need to give the base a lick of black
Craig Torrens ·
Wow.looks great Baz 👍
funbug ·
Do you need an engineering certificate for those seats?
Bizarre ·
you need an engineers certificate for changing underpants
EVERYTHING that is not original needs a certificate
These are ADR approved seats that were OEM for a Proton Satria GTi
They are bolted to Recaro bases that connect to the original VW mounting runners
There is no problem getting these engineered
EgeWorks ·
Looking good Barry. That exhaust is great.
trickysimon ·

Flintstones ·
Baz, correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like you have the seats in the wrong location.....
Drivers seat in the passenger side and vice versa.
Love the old school recaros👍
Cheers

Bizarre ·
Dino
you are "sort of" correct
This model has a flip lever on both sholders of the seat - so it doesnt matter which way they go in
I purposely swapped them round so as to have easy access to the adjusting knob from the middle.
There isnt enough room to get your hand down there when the door os closed.
These fit really well (520mm wide base) and dont hinder access to the hand brake in any way
I run door pockets and there is no pressure there either - just not enough room for a hand
It is useful as most people that sit there are "one offs" and usually want to adjust after you have started driving
Barnabie ·
Just read your thread from the beginning. Love what you've done so far, especially the exhaust. Keep the updates coming 🙂

Make sense. At least you can adjust without having to open the door because of the tight restrictions.
Recaro's really do make driving a pleasure, especially on long trips. They are worth every cent in my book.

That was the worst Valla ever, everyone sat in their cabins or went home, hopefully the weather will be good this year.
1/2 the fun of Valla is walking around talking to people, not much fun in the rain

Well - Marty has had more work done
FINALLY got some $$$ together to have a tidy up
Tony Holden at Silverwater gave my car a tidy up with a bubble or two in cancer and a new coat of 2 Pac in the original Martini Olive
There wasnt a lot of rust - literally a bubble here and there.
This paint is a bitch to match so I had it completely dont on the outside
Had the 2nd LHD wiper holes welded as well as the "L" holes so as I could run just the 1303 L badge
Bizarre ·
Also had some holes cut in the engine lid so as I could space out the number plate
Just need to get a trim of rubber to put over the hole
Also pretty happy with how the mexican seals have come up
(yeah - forgot to get some other holes welded 🤓 )
Bizarre ·
Also thinking of a wheel change again
The light coloured wheels seem "soft"
Not sure to go with aftermarket 17" fuchs
or to get some more Boxster wheels and paint them in a deep dark olive green to complement the olive yellow

You certainly like making sure that air gets in!
Paint looks good.
On the wheels, I'm biased, I like the Boxsters, but the black Fuchs make it look meaner.

Barry It looks excellent!!
Is the number plate boot area modified ? IE cut out ? (excuse the beetle nubie !)
Both wheels look the goods.

VERY late 1976 beetles had a thermo opening up under the numberplate light area - my top hole.
I have just cut it out

Any updates?
Did you find the wheel you first had in the first post of decent quality?
I love this colour?

Not a lot - just driving him
Been retired from company car duties a year ago.
Still gets driven to work Fridays and on the weekend.
Just struggled going to meetings on 40 degree days in a suit and an un airconditioned day
Also all this rain lately, and with my car living outside under cover, you still get water in a carb and blocking a jet every now and then
Whatever, finally got rid of the cloth interior.
It just shows the dirt. Having a dog doesnt help. Especially a big dog.
Anyway, got some TMI seat covers and a rear cargo speaker tray.
Still having trouble trying to keep the water off the door cards from the inside.
I have lined it with plastic, but it is still wet in heavy rain.
When they dry, i will pull them and paint them.
Should help a lot
As for your question about the wheels - if you are talking the chrome ones. I diddnt like them. Poor quality chrome, started to rust and wrong offset.
If you are talking the V Force spiders - yep, nice wheel. Especially for a 15" stock bolt pattern

I see you left your motorbike helmet on the back seat 😂😂😂
I know you mentioned spraying the back of the door cards, exactly what I was thinking when reading it. I was thinking of scotch guard though.
I like the 17" Fuchs wheel on there, my 2c.

Barry, I made my door cards out of ply (bit lighter, and more durable I reckon) and primed it well all over before I had it lined.
I also put my plastic waterproofing sheet outside the internal door frame, but inside the window glass - basically, I stuck it to the outside of the inside skin.
This was also to keep moisture out of the remote central locking and the electric windows.

mmmm............... I looked at doing that but reckoned it would be a pain with all the bits there as my doors are not stripped down
Will have to pull the trim off again and have a damn good look again

Not much to add - but I can see the speedo now
Was looking at Seve C's car and he has one of these Head Up read out things
I got the GPS one because I couldnt be arsed mucking round with the sensor
Good solution Barry, I cant believe how good it is not too look down at the speedo all the time. Have you tried it around tall buildings etc?

Went for a drive into the city and all was fine
Certainly helps my son learning to drive

Hi Barry
Do you think we could have class action and VW to pay for these speedo upgrades, after all they are the ones that put the speedo in a hard to read position.🤪

I thought I would add some pics of the latest mods
Dunno if I like the art direction but I sure love the function
Parking outside all these years, I never realized how much water gets inside the engine compartment and into the dual carbs
I put a glass filter/regulator on to see if the crud was coming from the tank - bit no.
It had to be coming in through the filters.
Anyway, I got this louvre from VVDS and I wish I bought it years ago.
No more crud or water in the carbs. No more pops and farts.
