ok, heres info i have gather alrite..from a few sites...it is mroe a collaboration of the info, so as to clarify what they are saying
u are in fact, well as far as i can tell, talking about two different beetles....
There is firstly the Jubilee, which was produced in 1971, when VOLKSWAGEN celebrated its 20 millionth sale.....I gather that means a car or van of any sort...just under the VW badge. The car was offered in that lovely bright yellow - Saturn Yellow. 15 thousand of them were produced.
However on the 17 February 1972, VW produced its 15007034th BEETLE...which was a superbeetle.
In this honor, it then produced (according to details I can find) 6000 super beetles (metallic blue/silver in color) They have a plaque on the dash, and came with a certificate. from what i can tell from info i can see...it was a 'european only' beetle. I think that means ppl probably had to have it imported especially for them. And as i understand it, some ppls from aussie ordered them in but they weren't 'sent here as a big shipment" per say (offically) make sense??
The following link has pics and things of the car, along with ones of the jubilee.

VW went on to produce 35 (if I've read it all correctly) special edition super bugs through the following years...
hope this helps ppls out....but yes, it appears that we definately have two cars, one which celebrates 20 million cars, and one that celebrates 15 million beetles....
oh, and dont be surprised if u see the titles being swaped over thru other ppls sites and links...I have noticed it, and still nto sure if I've got it rite.
all clear as mud now....
correct me if i'm wrong lee.
PS: still haven't found out how many eactly were sent to aussie land, except i recall, like Lee, reading somewhere the figure was approx 200...
but i like supers so reading about them isn't a chore for me..will keep going
