Mk1 GTI's

Hey all.

Hope someone might be able to help me. I live in Queensland where I'm trying to get my hands on a mk1 Golf GTI and I'm not having a lot of luck.
Can anyone tell me where I could find one? I know of plenty overseas, but I'm not prepared to shell out for import taxes etc. etc.
Alternatively I've heard lots of cases of people putting Audi or other engine in Golfs. Would it be possible to put a 1.8 in an LS or a diesel mk1 and has anyone out there tried it?

Umm yes there are a few around here and there. I have a 5door desiel gl, which is running a mk2 Gti motor and gb. it might eb the way to go, get a 2 door mk 1 and put a later model gti engine or similar in. a 20v 1.8L audi engine and gb............................:thumb

Thanks BiX. Just seen a guy in Morningside driving a bright purple mk1 with all the body kit. Felt tempted to chase after him and see if he fancied parting with it, but I guess that'd be too wierd!!! Anyway, my hopes are up!

i had somebody do that when i ws in my beetle. I know guy (harding european) said that he doesn't do much mk1 stuff any more, mainly mk3-5 and audi. I did hear about a mk1 gti 3 door that had jsut been done up for racing but was being sold.... i had just gottten mine so was a little annoyed. guy said best bet for parts if we can't find easily in aust, was over the net form the US?

Should jump on VWVortex in the Australian regional forum. We are always on the lookout for Mk1's. There are have been a couple of genuine Mk1 GTI's coming up in the last couple of years. Otherwise, 2 door Mk1's come up fairly regularly around the place. You planning a GTI replica, or a modded Mk1?

Hey Simon. A friend of mine is selling a 2 dr 79 model GLS Mk1 for $800. U2U me for details. It is in Canberra, but that year model is good and rare!
