Wanted - 24mm torsion bar

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/36971/wanted-24mm-torsion-bar

J&SBlue ·

Upgrading my buggy to have thicker and longer torsion bars. I am using the spring plates and torsion bars out of a 58 chassis. One of the torsion bars is quite pitted which makes me wonder if it is any good.
Anyway, if someone has a spare single or set of 24mm, long torsion bars please let me know.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I assuming that type 3 wagon torsion bars will fit as well ?

Thanks,
Mark.

Use all Type 3 Wagon gear - pressed steel torsion bar thingos (end caps?) instead of cast and thicker torsion bars for higher spring rate than std Beetle. I think they are the 24mm ones

EDIT: eeek! IRS or swing?!

I have a set of Type 3 available ..... $150.00 if your interested.
there a matching set Left & right

J&SBlue ·

VWCool : it is swing axle - that is why I need to use the old oval spring plates and end caps.

vw54 : thanks for your reply. Is that $150 just for the torsion bars or for everything from a type 3 ? All I can use from a type 3 is the torsion bars.

Thanks Hutcho but a bit big for what I need I think.

Mark.

Thats $150 for the torsion bars.

J&SBlue ·

VW54 - can you do me a favour please and measure the length of one of the torsion bars. I want to know if the type 3 ones are the same length as the Oval ones.

Thanks,
Mark.

J&SBlue ·

Cool. Thanks Dave.

amazer ·

grrr were you at the nationals? I had mine there for sale, same price as daves. I think the bars in question are actually 23.5mm.

J&SBlue ·

Sorry Amazer, I wasn't at the Nationals.

Ive just found n measured the torsion bars...

they are 676 mm from end to end outsides. Let me know if you need them.

J&SBlue ·

Thanks Dave.

Just checked mine again this morning to make sure and they are 626 mm long.
Looks like I have to get oval torsion bars only which is a bummer.

Thanks for your help.
Mark.

vw54 ·

well there is a bit of lea way in the torsion housing from memory, so the bar will fit into the tube and allow to float back n forth.

What chassis do you have ??? and what are you doing to it again.

J&SBlue ·

It is a 69 chassis and I am just changing the torsion bars from the standard to the longer stiffer ones from an oval. I have no idea whether the longer bars will fit.

vw54 ·

Are you converting it to IRS at the same time or is the pan already set up this way ???

J&SBlue ·

No this is a swing axle setup. That is why I am using oval rear suspension parts.

vw54 ·

I suggest that you call Boris at Vintage and advise him the set up you want ... he will no if it will fit up or not.

I also suggest you convert it to IRS while your doing the job.

J&SBlue ·

Thanks Dave.

There is no need to convert to IRS. Swing setup works just fine.
