New kit any one

just confirming for everyone that this will fit from a ej81 all the way up to the modern turbo motors, it includes everything (incl fastners) to mate the ej motor to a beetle, type 3, kombi 1600, 1800 & 2l box and get drive.
all you'd then have to do is sort external motor stuff.... cooling, carb linkages/efi, exhaust, fuel supply, alt wiring, ect.
seagull ·
its ej20 / 22 , I have not tryed it on a ej81 ?
just think about how a vw blots on to a vw motor ,all the same bolts required , nut on to crank is the same .
the only subaru bolts are for the drive hub ( from auto flex plate ) and four for the motor to bolt to the adapter plate .
I dont think it would fit a 2ltr box ( dont have a box to try it too any way)
Klaus ·
This means a modified flywheel is needed aswell , which bolts to the hub ?
seagull ·
stock VW fly wheel bolts on with Vw bolt

Hey Neil,do you have any close up pics of that bracket you have bolted to the auto bellhousing-just near the starter. Are you using it for an engine mount?
seagull ·
Auto mount
O there a spacer behind the plate to make bring it off the starter casting .
I taped the holes out in the auto housing to 10mm

The auto bracket is the * top mount * and the motor sits on the smaller one , I removed the subaru mounts used the bracket and welded my own pick ups .
the bushes large ones are toyota 75 series and the smaler 40 series .you need to run a sleve through the center so they dont crush up when you tighten the bolt .
My front mout for the auto is the same ( 40 series ) , all workes well .
most off road race cars have this type of set up .
I hope this helps , seagull

Very, very neat work you have done there.I assume the Toyota rubber bushes are from the spring shackles.I was going to use Valiant V8 front engine mounts there, but they are a bit bigger than the ones you have used.I don't know if the Toyota ones only on the bellhousing would be enough-I planned on letting the Type 4 hang out like a beetle does. Thanks for the pics-awesome.
seagull ·
O yes there from the spring bushes . I had planed only to run a Vw motor in this , but as The subaru is turn key , service is oly change the oil and clean the air cleaner well what more can I say .
I added the rear mounts due to extra weight of the subaru .
The mounts are neat and may never need to be replaced

You sold this yet???
Andy ·
seagull, are you bolting the type 3 auto into a beetle rear end or using a complete type 3 rear end?
Cheers,
Richard
seagull ·
Dero , I have stock
Richard , I used a stock vw type three rear end from a wagon .I have also used a super bug and cut the horns off .
seagull ·
very early shot
Dero ·
seagull check u2u. I am interested, although conversion is still very much in planning.
Andy ·
Thanks seagull,
I'm actually making a start on my trike (probably take a few years to finalise, so don't hold your breath).
Beetle horns sounds like a good idea, I didn't ralise how much the type 3 relyed on the body for support.
At this stage I'm happy to stick with complete type 3 running gear (motor, tinware, aotu, rear end).
Do you swap in beetle torsion bars for ride comfort?
Cheers,
Richard 🙂
seagull ·
No I just left the type three bars in >I put the trike up in the members rides in a few weeks for all to see and ask ? seagull 🙂

Neil-got any pics ready for us yet?.When you made the front trans mount with the smaller shackle rubbers, what size bolt did you use? I made the sleeve out of 16mm round bar with a 10mm hole.I think maybe a 10mm bolt is not big enough for the torque these things put out.Might try pressing in a 17mm sleeve with a 12mm hole-sleeve should still have enough wall thickness.
seagull ·
I did use a smaller shackel mount ( 40 series toyota ) the sleve I drilled ant taped from each side 12mm .
this way the 25mm long bolts could be removed in side my frame ( was a small area ) If I can find your email address I send you some photos , neil
O bump for my adapter plate 🙂 I can not get over this one not been sold to date .
