I have decided I need to get my butt into gear and tomorrow I am going to the gym to join up for a month and do aerobics! I am sick of making excuses and need to lose some weight and tone up. I have lost 20 kilos since last year and I know how hard it is without support. So let's all get together and see if we can do it together! What do you say?
Even if it is going for walks 3 days a week and eating healthy that's gotta be alot healthier than doing nothing. Let's all try this together and see how much healthier we feel and how much weight we can lose in month.
Who wants to do this?

I would love to go but I am a hyperactive, bulimic, turec syndome case with a compulsive disorder. So I walk really fast while swearing at people then throw up and clean up the mess. Not good.

Stuff it!
I did a medical in January. At the end of it the doctor sits me down & says, your 105 kilo & smoke a pack a day. what are "WE" going to do about it?
I said , you've just done all these tests on me, am I healthy?
He rather sheepishly said yes.
So my reply was I'm going to do f#ckall.
I think I'm the last of the proud heavy weights....😎

You go!! woo hoo! As long as you are happy and feel healthy that's all that matters. Myself, I like a bit of meat on a man 😉 But its how you feel that matters........

haha i lost all my weight going vegetarian last year... i put it all back on during the hsc... damn.
good luck. ive taken to riding my bike everywhere so im on the right trail! yippe go us!

im with kikko... except ive been vegetarian for 11 years.
bikes rule!:bounce
ive been riding mine all weekend, up and around the huge hills of paddington, granny-mode all the way!
im also thinking about taking 1 hour out of my 4 hour uni break of a wednesday to do some yoga in the botanic gardens. yes, i know i will look strange, but at least i'll be super-healthy and relaxed for chemistry lectures 😀
you dont need to spend money on a gym foxy, just get a bike or go swimming!

I'm vegetarian but that doesn't stop you putting on weight unfortunately.
Martial arts does the trick for me - full body and mind workout with purpose.

Good luck Foxy...and well done with what you lost already...it's not easy to start loosing...I stacked on a lot of weight when the kids were little...seems an occupational hazard for mums ....felt so much better when I got it off....I didn't diet or join a gym...just general life changes...and some travel on my own ... I just walked every where and ate when I felt hungry but not lots....
Star buggy I did yoga for years....it doesn't look funny...and is a fantastic form of excercise and very relaxing.....and it makes you so flexible...Thai Chi also good...that's so cool to do in a park
I'm so not a gym person...I go crazy in those places...
If you want to be super fit do traditional Thai kick boxing...I found a school near here where they had a non combat class.....do all the same things just don't spar....it's great for getting rid of tension and pent up frustration....kick and punch it away...also good form of self defence training...
Aikido another good martial art which lots of women do
I find the Eastern forms of excercise great for the mind as well as body...can highly recommend them

I'm up for it. I lost alot of weight when I was pergnant with both the babies but I have put it all back on. It is hard to look after myself when all my time is taken up looking after the kids. I need to make a conscience effort to not to eat crap and I am also trying to stop smoking, so I am battling two evils at once. I need to get off my arse more often and walk..... or if I had the money I would join a gym but as walking is for free I'll start with that.
I'll let you know how I go.

depends on how energetic you get.
i read somewhere that hormones released during sex have something to do with toning muscles, so i guess that even if you're the lazy half you will still get a little toned:P

frenzix ·
few i was a bit worried about that
HotRodMatt ·
First thing
Never NEVER ever weigh yourself.
Measure your chest, waist and hips.
As you lose fat you will tone and possibly gain muscle mass. If you lose 5 kilos of fat you may/probably will gain 3 kilos of lean muscle. Fat weighs bugegr all. Muscle is heavy.
If you don't have time for structured exercise make sure you move. If you want to have 5 buscuits walk to the pantry get one. Sit down eat it and walk back for another. If you use a plate, walk to the sink and put it there - don't wait until you have to take a few things from the table keep going back and forth. Use stairs rather than elevators.
Don't pay attention to height weight age formula. It's bullshit pure and simple. The only way to know where you should be weight wise is to include body fat percentage and muscle mass into that formula.
No one would look at me and have any idea how much I weigh. I love laughing at doctors who figure me to be about 85 kilos. They die when they find out they are wrong by on average 30 kilos.
Fossil ·
Could do loosing a few Kgs myself but finding the time is a bummer - missus reckons halve your beer intake and it will be a good start - damn that's 1 stubby a day - possibly if she'd listen adn give me smaller servings of food it may be a better start
Special Air Service ·
As an amatuer Triathlete My race weight is between 70 & 72 kgs wringing wet (when Im fighting fit) Currently 80kgs and feel like a sloth compared to when Im in shape. Not that I could be called overweight at all but its just not what I am used to feeling / looking like. I havent had a great deal of time to train / race lately due to my Twins being born but i am currently on the come back trail.
My advice to anyone is that its all about using up more energy than you put in to your body, so basically you need to be moving as much as you can, and make sure you enjoy what your doing(excersize wise) otherwise it is just another chore you have to do.
Remember if being fit was easy everybody would be fit.
foxy_fuchsia ·
Good advice guys!! check back here every few days and tell us how you have been goin. Today I went to an aerobics class, which I think is better than sitting on a treadmill and doing weights. It's alot more fun.
I am going to go again tomorrow as well! How is everyone going with the walking/yoga? Tell me what Yoga is like coz I have always wanted to try it. We should get a few people on here together around bris and try Yoga together. I have heard there is a place in Brissie that do a different kind of Yoga in a hot/steam room. It's suppose to be really good and sweat all of the toxins and weight off.
Foxy
HotRodMatt ·
SAS got it right. Move more than you eat.
If you like a full stomach and enjoy eating then move considerably more or eat lots of stuff that takes more energy to digest than it provides. High water content foods like lettuce etc give you the oral satisfaction of eating without the caloric intake.
When I was fighting I weighed 140kg minimum. My intake was phenomenal. But my muscle mass meant I was "working" all the time. I would still swim, work out, spar and run but would never lose weight only build more muscle mass and tone it. Do not be afraid to weigh more, concentrate on losing fat and inches.

Good advice matt,
the best thing that i do is judge how much you loose by how your clothes feel on you.
If the jeans that you haven't been able to get into for 2 years all of a sudden fit, that is when i feel good.
What sort fo fighting did you use to/still do Matt?
Lee.
barls ·
ive lost 15kg just this year and want to loose another 10 or so. but if i build more muscle ill most likely stay the weight i am now

I joined weight watchers after christmas and am walking 2 outta 3 days and I've lost 10 kilos and lovin it.
HotRodMatt ·
Boxing, Lee. But being a super heavyweight if you don't knock them out in the first or second you don't want to fight anymore.
After that, while I started losing my size (took 4 years to reduce down to 105-115kilos) I took up medieval fighting. Not the latex SCA shit - real high carbon steel swords, 20 kilo mail coats, spears and axes. Strength endurance speed and other boxing skills helped there too.
koolkarmakombi ·
Another point to consider is to really reduce your portions. Learn what a kilojoule is, and read the label of the food you eat. Check the portion size too. The ice coffee I drink every morning at work has two 750 odd kj (at home now) potions in it- about 1500 total. Thats the same as a whole lean cuisine (large)
Eat every meal and have morning and arfternoon tea. Dont buy shit because if its not there you cant eat it.
Endocrine disorders are a bullshit excuse ( as said by a Professor of Endocrine medicine) If you eat more energy than you use, you store it in your fat cells. If you eat less energy than you use, you use up fat cells, stored energy in your liver and other chemical storage systems.
I feel so much better when fit and lean. I can be fat and fit. Currently a new parent, I am unfit and fat and in desparate need of a good loooong sleep. So, Foxy I am on the mission too!
BettyBoop ·
Hot Rod Matt's got the right idea - CHUCK OUT SCALES!!!
Put it this way - would u rather drop 3 dress sizes or lose 10kg n still be the same dress size - its WAT YOU LOSE - not how much! You have to ensure you're losing fat but maintaining muscle mass. If you get a special machine you can hook urself up n find out those percentages - pppfffttt who's got the money for one of those - but i know i'd rather be 3 dress sizes smaller and weigh 2kilos more than to lose 10kg n be the same dress size - ya follow? 😉
Theres all sorts of things being said about wat kinda food you should eat - and sooooo many views of each one of them! I'm currently doing the Aitkens thing - I havn't weighed myself nor measured - I am eating healthier and power walking 3-4km each session 3 times a week... and I feel FANTASTIC... and being fit isn't about how much u weigh either! Sure it helps but its not the be all n end all... great to see this thread!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
Ciao

when I am training for Ironman I cant physically consume enough food to keep the weight on but thats doing anywhere up to 30 hrs of training each week. You have to move it to lose it.
also if you can manage to fit in exercise twice a day say morning and arvo you will be boosting your metabolism twice a day (you continue to use energy at an increased rate following an exercise session) and the more muscle mass you put on your body the more energy you use just standing still, so hit those weights people. And at the first sign of hunger drink water as your hunger signals are usually signs of dehydration initially.
CB Hotdog ·
Since around Xmas I've been trying to focus on health and fitness.
I gave up smoking around November :party. In December I started swimming 3 times a week - but that was because I was on holidays, now that I'm back at work, I just go once on the weekend. I also started Yoga which both Gazza and I do each Monday (which I love and would highly recommend to anyone interested). And, when I can drag my lazy a**e out of bed, I go for a morning walk (usually once or twice a week).
My let down is the food department!! I'm a sucker for anything sweet and it doesn't help that my partner (Gazza) works at a bakery and brings home lots of yummy breads and treats (howz that for an excuse??).
So although i need to step up the pace a bit with the exercise, I really need to focus on food portions/calories/intake etc. And i agree, it's definitely about burning more than you consume.....
Good luck everyone - I'll let you know how I'm going - depending on the results😉
Denise
So my focus is the food portions/calories - and stepping up a bit of ex
I've still gotta wlearn the eating thing. , and try to walk 2 mornings per week. But i still need to do more - and learn to eat less

since xmas i decided it was time to do a bit of lose the weight routine but i thought arrh bugger it.. :duh
it didn't really work for me so had a rethink...
i started by walking the dog 3-5 times a week, eating less crap and tried to balance carbs, protein and fats and getting my metabolic rate up..
since then i have lost about 3-4 kgs, got my met rate up and now RUN 3-4 times a week..
i also went on a detox for 3 months (nearly 1 month thru)
WOW! i feel heaps better and have stamina to run places..
i'm amazed... :o
i never thought i could do it...
i may go to the gym soon but as finances go i'll keep running and walkin the dog
ive tried to learn in my thick head it is a lifestyle change for the long run and it helps to have a partner that will support and participate in it as well!
Emu ·
I've managed to keep off the kilos for the past 2 years, down to 105kg now (though the doctor wants me to lose another 10). But through the use of quality vitamin supplements (not that stuff from the supermarket), some regular exercise and trying to eat healthy, I'm starting to build some abs. Goal for this year is a six-pack.....(not a slab)
vanderaj ·
Foxy, great idea.
I'm 132 kg and want to get to 80 kg but more importantly about 25% body weight as fat (the top end of "normal"), rather than my currently morbidly obese level. My goal is to be around 100 kg by the end of the year, and by 80 kg by the end of 2006.
I tend to weigh myself about once a week under the same scary conditions - Monday morning just after waking, whilst in the buff. I know what people say about not weighing at all, but my scales also have a fat % thingy, and that's what I am looking at. I also like losing the cm's from my waist, and that's a nice feeling too. The actual kg figure I could care less about.
As for changes to food consumption, I find bog standard WW simply doesn't work for me. Last year, they trialled a different food pyramid which had more protein and less carbs (a la Atkins, however without the fat), and that worked really well for me. Then for some unknown reason, they stopped talking about it, and when I rejoined this year, they had gone back to the "secret" carb restriction plan they use (the 14 sugar points coupled with advice against eating too much pasta and starchy foods). I wish they'd get honest with themselves and lose the focus of the low fat - it's failed and fails miserably for almost everyone but the lucky few.
Atkins worked for me in 2002 (I lost more than 15 kg using it), but organizing the food was difficult to do when I was constantly travelling. I no longer travel, so it's easier to fall into a routine. However, despite Atkins working well, I doubt I will use it as I know the modified high protein / low carb version of WW works, and I'll stick to that.
I long (10+ years) ago optimized my food intake (note I don't say diet) - I drink about 2l of water a day (at least), I don't eat ice cream, I don't buy chocolates (but I seem to have some at least a few times a month) and and I don't buy or eat biscuits. I don't take sugar in anything... except muffins. I don't drink for the most part. I rarely have any sugary drinks - I can't recall the last time I had full strength Coke by choice... it might have been 2003 or thereabouts. However, I know I fall down in two areas:
* I eat too much, almost all the time
* I eat too often from the wrong food groups (carbs - I love muffins, McDonalds, etc) instead using them as treats
I am working on this. I have started eating green salads for lunch with no carbs (ie salads not salad rolls like I used to), and I try to avoid eating carbs with dinner (ie no potatoes or bread). The breakfast muffin will be replaced eventually - I need to wean myself off them. They are 7 points, and incredibly yummy. My view is that I can cope with them when I am 27 points a day, but it's obvious the 14 sugar points a week are being seriously violated as I'm not losing weight right now.
I have resumed going to the gym. I went today for example. (But I spoilt it by eating half a chocolate egg - which is the last of my easter eggs/chocolates). I recently moved my carpark to be about a km and a bit away from work, and that's great - I get at least 30 minutes of walking in every day just because of the carpark's location. Coupled with the gym, I should start seeing results soon.
I've attached an image of my fat chubby face tonight.
Andrew

foxy, the yoga that you do in a steam room is called bikram yoga... i would NOT recommend it for anyone who isnt an intermediate with yoga, or hasnt done yoga in a while and is getting back into it.
if you arent fit to begin with, then its most definitely a no-no.
its VERY taxing on your body. not only are you stretching and manipulating muscles you dont often use, but you are doing it in a very warm and very humid environment... sure you lose weight, but its water you are losing.
if you want to try what bikram yoga is like, pick a very humid summers day when the temperature is around 35 degrees in the shade, and do a 45 minute yoga session. its unbelievably hard.
i spent my entire summer holidays doing a 30-90 minute yoga sessions 5 days a week in the hottest part of the day... i went to bikram a few times and it was not much different.
*sigh* i wish i had more time to do yoga like i used to!
though, i did ride my bike to uni and work for the very first time today... dodging traffic and pedestrians... i think ive ridden about 16kms today!

Try lite n easy for the short term. I know that it is one of those gimmiky things but it really works. Starting is always hard, allowing someone to take over what you eat and how much can be really beneficial until you have the willpower to do it yourself. You can't stay on it for long as it becomes boring and makes you feel sick after a while. I have been on this program twice now and haven't gained any thing that I lost.

Don't do it Frenzix and Byronbus! Or if you do have something healthy!! :P I don't go to maccas anymore after watching that supersize movie. Well done Andrew on making the 'lifestyle' change (not diet) I know you will start seeing results very soon. When people are bigger they tend to lose weight alot more quickly. When I first realized I needed to do something about my weight I went to the doc and he put me on a tablet called reductil...yes it's a tablet but I saw it as something to kickstart my weightloss. Obviously you have to eat a healthy diet with exersise and I dropped from 95kilos to 90Kgs in just 2 weeks. I lost 10Kgs just by changing what I ate and using reductil.
Since then I have dropped another 10 on my own even though it has been a slow process! Ultimately I will be happy when I get down to 65Kilos but I will reasess that when I reach it.
Tomorrow I am going to get up and go to the gym, I am so sore today though! Yeterday morning they had us running around outside I was stuffed. But it's great where I do it, they warm you up properly, get into the aerobics and then have a relaxing yoga/warm down session.
Let me know how everyone is going!!

Queen_Bug .... it is very easy to gain weight again once you've had it...those cells are there waiting to expand again to what they were...
Denying yourself pleasure is a no no I think cos then you feel deprived...it's a chore...allow yourself to be naughty occasionally like if out and you want a sweet but don't bake a sweet at home if others aren't going to eat it and you are tempted to graze
Weighing food is a boring chore...just be sensible...weigh yourself each week...think about what you've done if you've gained a bit of weight and try not to do it until it drops off again...
Wearing loose clothing only hides your body and makes it so easy to fill the clothes out :jesus
Holidays are hard to get through...it so easy to graze a lot more...but don't punish yourself...just walk lots or swim more....and remember the best excercise of all.... mmmm don't deny it:sandrine

I'm going to bring my running shoes to work and go for a 20 min walk/jog aroung the botanical gardens at least 3 times a week. Its dark when I get home now and there is no way I am going walking alone in the dark, the fact that I live in a small estate only means there are less people to help me of something does go awry. I've changed my diet dramatically since summer, but in winter its just so tempting to go and get something warm like a pie or burger or something

I have been pretty religious about my food intake, and I've lost about 3 kg since the first post. Hwoever, I can feel it slowing down as I've not done any exercise beyond the car park being a long way away.
I already drink lots of water, so that's not going to help. Portion control is also under control as well.
I'd recommend you all have a look at is the Food Doctor Diet - it's a portion controlled, low GI balanced approach to food intake. There's no real fads in there beyond the low GI component, but honestly, that's why this approach is working for me rather than the very similar WW program. It is basically a low fat approach to correct feeding. About 30-35% protein, the rest is low GI complex carbs and minimal bad fats. Plus I love the way it sets you up properly - five small meals rather than three big uns, coupled with no high GI foods after 3 pm. You can have high GI simple carbs, just not all the time.
Need to join the gym at the Docklands so I have no excuses not to exercise.

Buy a kombi (not running), have it delivered to the bottom of you long uphill driveway..
Then dont ask anyone to help you push it up the hill...
When it gets really hard to push get two rocks and a big lever,,
Next lever the old kombi up the hill,, one inch at a time..
Took me 2 and half hours.... phew !! good workout though!!
Good luck to all on a health binge...
Ps. I'm a Vego and you can still gain weight !
Pps. If you wanna give a Maccas watch "SuperSize Me" It will put you off for a while...

I only started a few weeks back. All began with a taunt about gym junky wife and city to surf run. So I signed us both up to do it, and she isnt as cocky as she was. Just received my gear today. If you see a guy laying flat on his back about 5kms in (number is 40863) and paramedics desperately trying to bring him back to life.... that will be me.

I tried ultra light last year and I will admit it is a good program. I only kept it up for 1 week tho when i was supposed to do it for 4 weeks. In that 1 wk I lost 4 kilos and have still kept it off and have taken off a few more kilos since this thread was started. It's all to do with having your body in ketosis and burning your own fat. But I am doing it the good ol' way, going to weight watchers with my mum. I have also hired a treadmill that I have been using the last 2 months.
So all is going well. How has everyone else been going?
