Hi,
Had this problem once, the fuel pump was the culprit, replaced it, drained and replaced the oil and no more problem.

I think it's got to do with the fuel pump diaphram. once they go fuek can seep into the oil through the mechanic's that run the pump and get into the oil. Do as the above post. I just replaced my pump only a few weeks ago, 5 mins max. Don't quote my on info but this is what I read on another forum,

drain the oil, change the fuel pump and refill the oil with new stuff. It'll be fine. But don't drive it like that.

Yep, no damage if engine hasn't been running with heaps of fuel in oil.
There is another way fuel can get into the oil, if a needle valve (above float in carb) get's stuck upen, fuel can drain from tank into carb and into the motor. Not as common, but possible (also depends on type of fuel pump you have). Still replace the pump first and see how it goes.
All air cooled VW's are prone to this and it's worse if you park nose up hill.
