Well after much discussion, I’ve negotiated with John Baremans who is the manager of Drag Combat, to host our VW Nationals 2005 Drag racing event.
It will be on Sunday May 22nd at Western Sydney International Dragway
The VW Nationals is open to all Volkswagens, both air and water cooled, as long as the vehicle is a member of the Volkswagen Audi Group, and will cater for both Street and competition (ANDRA) vehicles.
There will be separate races run on the same day, consisting of 2 Brackets - Fastest 8 VWs, and All Volkswagens.
Note: Entrants are also welcome to run in the Drag Combat event if they choose providing they meet the criteria of entry. Entry forms and further info available from www.dragcombat.com.
Please note that you can only entry one class.
Drag Combat caters for all makes and models of 4 cylinder and rotary-powered vehicles, includes a car show and shine, dealer trade shops and car club displays. It runs to ANDRA Sport Compact rules and classes.
Entry :- Car and Driver $55.00
Spectator $25.00

Just got an email back from John Baremans. He has shown heaps of support for VW racing in the past and now. He appreciated the thanks I sent him.
I hope on the day all those that see him thank him for the support.
speedster356 ·
Yeah, lets ensure there's a big VW following, if any interstaters out of towners need accomodation info and the like, just post here and I'm sure we can make it a bit easier for them at this end.
Peter Leonard ·
Oh yes. This is good. verrrry good. 😀😀

VWMA Editor ·
I'll be attending the event to cover the story for Issue#7 of VWMA, and will also be pit crewing for Neil 'Wally' Penboss and his car BUGGER from Brisbane, after convincing him that this event is one not to miss.
Catch-up then.
Cheers
Craig

Peter Leonard ·

this sounds like a bit more trouble than i had initially bargained on....
gayanne ·
Yeh thanks Dave got my invite in the mail on Friday.Theres only one prob, my car does not comply to the rules with body and custom work which is specified. But they are good rules which will prove the quickest street rego, have fun JVLRacing.
vw54 ·

John I didnt expect your car to fit into that class. It can still run in the open class.
Are you coming along ??
gayanne ·
Hey Dave not this year but deffently next year. Thanks JVLRacing.
LOWBUG ·
Hey Dave got the papers, not sure if I'll be right to race, but got a question or 2.
Who wrote the Berg trophy rules? no prob just curios about things like having to drive the car for 15 min at 110kph. Who decides, and on what basis does scrutineering take place, and by who'm?
What about engineering and paper work, there was a bit of BS flying around last year about this, I don't think that Ill be able to get an engineering report done by then for my recent improvments, plus not sure that car will even be ready. The last thing I'd want is anyone to start bitching on the forum.
Other than that I like the rules it all makes total sence.
Hale Dave

Geoff in conjunction with Gene, drafted up the rules a few years ago. I hold them and get to scrutineer as well.
It would be a shame if you carnt make it ... we need / want a good VW representation at the event, so we have a better chance of getting off the ground next year.
HotRodMatt ·
vw54 wrote:so we have a better chance of getting off the ground next year.
Wouldn't a track hire solve that problem?
I'm sure a lot more VWs would be racing too knowing they have exclusive use of the track. The locked in absolute confirmation would also make people be prepared to travel...
Last guys I know that hired the track were quoted 5 - 7k. They got it for 5,500. That's just over 100 cars at $50. Gate is then profit.

Also, remind Peter Pike of his email 24/02/2005
posted by Peter Pike on Dragster.com.au
WSID conducted a successful Street Bracket race, Burnout competition and the VW Nationals over the Easter weekend last year.
And again...
posted by Peter Pike on Dragster.com.au
that we had ran a successful event on the Easter weekend last year
Shouldn't be any problem getting his support.
vw54 ·
yeah i couldnt agree more LOL
LOWBUG ·
What about engineering and wether the car is actualy street legal without out it?
Bug_racer ·
Whats the deal with the spare tyre and late model vw's / Audis . Does it really need to be there ? Do the same rules apply for air cooled and water cooled ?
vw54 ·
yep it has to be there for all cars.
vw54 ·

yeah thats for a private practice, no spectators and a whole lt of other conditions.
Full track hire is around 28K, last time i ask
Peter Leonard ·
Dave, you have u2u...
vw54 ·
bump so whos coming along 4 a look or racing
Peter Leonard ·
i guess i'll be there minus the spare tyre... if you're sure, dave.
Bug_racer ·
So what about r32's ? They have a tyre repair kit . Do they have to run that as well ? Does it mean you have to run the toolkit as well ? Late model cars are heavy enough they should at least be able to take out these things which rattle in the rear
speedster356 ·
Changed the clutch in the Speedster today, just need to set the wastegate pressure, clean the big injectors, fit the new NOS nozzles, slap on the drag radials, polish the carbon fibre body and it's all go....just kidding. 😉
vw54 ·
Bout time you got it going
Yes the spare must be in but you can take out the rattling bits
dangerous ·
Anyone been back back on the dyno in prep for this event?
Bug_racer ·
I have 2 r32's going . Do they have to buy a spare tyre and try and make it fit in a space thats too small for it ? These rules should really be updated
vw54 ·
What ever they come with standard will be fine.
1303Steve ·
Hi
The reason that a spare has to be fitted is that on a Beetle etc, it is an important part for crash protection.
A few kilos in heavy car is less burden than in a lighter car.
Steve
Bug_racer ·
If it is only a safety concern then all watercooled VW's shouldnt have to run with a spare tyre . Its the same story with the fan belt . There is no practical way a late vw/audi can have the belt removed for a run and then re-fitted . The a4 / passat cars have to go into service position to remove the belt . I know its a big advantage for the aircooled cars and I would just like to bring the playing field a little closer for air and water cooled vw's otherwise there will be a big rift in the vw community .
Peter Leonard ·
:duh
ohh kaayyyy....
LOWBUG ·
Wow I here the can being opened right now.
1303Steve ·
Hi
Its still a saftey concern on a watercooled car if you get hit up the bum.
Steve
vw54 ·
Pop
so r u racing chris ???

dangerous wrote:Anyone been back back on the dyno in prep for this event?
all going well the turbo oval will hit the dyno @ SOUTH COAST ROTARY on wednesday , where Kevin will assist me in setting up the microtec to suit the new turbo system. Will let you know how it goes .
:jesus
Peter Leonard ·
when do competitors turn up at WSID?
I'm gonna need a few hundred praccy runs (gearbox allowing)
HotRodMatt ·
So how many pre-entries are there Dave?
Will we see a good number of dubs?
I know a couple of cars were entered in DC before the nationals came into play...
vw54 ·
We have about 20 or so to date but MORE would be good....
How about running yr Red Bus down the track. ?????
Peter Leonard ·
is anyone going to have a lockable car in the pit area? My pit crew just disappeared. Need somewhere to stow the toolbox, and i'd rather it wasn't in my car while it's doing barrel rolls along the 1/4. will there be an AVD area or something?
"... long time watcher, first time player.."

Maybe if I pulled the engine and put it a bug....
Can't drive and shutter bug at the same time....
vw54 ·
Why whats wrong with running your bus, its dosent matter how fast you go as long as your out on the track having fun.
HotRodMatt ·

I thought you'd rather see pics than the brick going down the track...
In a couple of years the bug will be done and it'll get it's run...
If we're lucky Coopgirl's square will have a run next year...
CoopGirl ·
He can't race and take pics at the same time.......... only a woman is that talented!! LOL
jenz58 ·
I'll be there to watch on Sunday.....thought I'd come up and see these cars I've only seen pics of, or sitting at a show idle....really looking forward to it :bounce
Peter Leonard ·
cool, jenz!! you can mind my toolkit 😀
and leave your reply for bad attitude, they're nice, clean ppl in here remember😉
speedster356 ·
I think all the VWs will be pitted together, there shouldn't be a problem with security. I'm getting out there before 08:00.
