Rang my local VW dealer this arvo to try to get a wheel alignment done on my 72 beetle the receptionist said "yes we do wheel alignments" and then put me through to the workshop when I asked about prices. When I told the guy in the workshop it was for a 72 beetle he then proceeded to give me a thousand reasons why he wouldnt be able to do it. These ranged from "I think it would be to small to fit on our machine" (how small is a Polo these days?) to "I dont think we would have any data for a car that old" & "I dont think I have the correct spanner to fit the camber eccentric" in other words he just wasnt interested in doing it. Needless to say I wont be going back there in a hurry.

what ever happened to VWs legendary service from the beetle era? :duh
do they even stock many beetle parts these days?
sax ·
Bike dealers wont even look at anything over 10 years old.
As if a modern VW dealer would know where to start with an air cooled car🙁
They dont have any parts for the new stuff let alone vintage cars. Things like carbies and tinware are totally foreign to the
retards in the workshop.
Thats why we use old vw shops or do it ourselves.

SAS, you are obviously keen on being over charged for things hahahaha.... take it elsewhere man, you would get a better job for cheaper most likely...
i work in a dealership and as sax said, the 'retards' have no idea when the vehicle is over 15 years old and they honestly dont care half the time....

When I was buying my cabrio a guy rocked up in the most gorgeous 70's chop top and wanted to buy some part for it. He virtually got laughed out of the dealership !

Late last year I was talking to my (then) Holden dealer after picking up the Commodore from its Service. At the time I was looking into a tune up and check for the beetle so half-heartedly asked them whether they service 'older' cars. They proudly said they can easily do any cars, no matter what age.
I then stated the year and model (69 beetle), basically joking to myself that they would knock it back. Sure enough, I was told that I could book it in, but it would have to be a while before they could do it. Reason? 'We would have to get some of the more experienced mechanics to train the others in the use of points in these cars, probably have to read up on it too'. Yahoo.
I thought I would feed a bit more line here, waiting for more bait to go. 'Could you do a radiator flush as well?'. Apparently no problem, as long as I can direct them to where in the back the radiator is, as the younger guys might not recognise it first up.....
I know it isn't a VW dealer, but still pretty funny! Yeah!

Hell - glad I got a good friend who runds and tyre adn wheel business @ Brendale in Qld and he doesn't give bullshit and give great service and advice.
Fossil ·
Asked Robbie to check my 1973 Bay Kombi Wheel alignment and it was no problem - the inspection nda check cost me $10.00 for this - It workied out to be as close as it could be
77bay ·
Hey Fossil,
Is that Robbie at tyre and wheel solutions at Brendale? I was speaking to him the other day, on the phone, about some rims for Genevieve and he is more than helpful than anyone else I've had dealings with. He'll be getting my business when the time permits.
kustomkool ·
this is nothing shocking..
barls ·
hey sas they dont even keep any parts for cars over 15 years old. my old man bought most of there stock for aircooled when they offered it to him, the next week the rang up and wanted a part in the box and my old man sold it back to them for almost what he paid for the lot
Freddie Fender ·
Go to a tyre shop for a steering alignment, any reputable tyre shop can usually do a steering alignment. I had one done the other day, no problems at all.
frenzix ·
went to jax the other day.. $32 later the beetle drove sweet
WABaja ·
You can do it yourself, at home for free, with 2 broom handles a tape measure and a couple of spanners... That's all mine's ever had and it hasn't scrubbed tyres and behaves very well going down the freeway at 110...
Fossil ·
77Bay it sure is Robbie King @ Tyre and Wheel - he's great adn takes the time + his service is the best I've come across
Fossil ·
He helped me out one Sat arvo as he was closing shop at Superior Tyres @ Aspley - a puncture in a tyre on my SS Commodore and since then he has got 6 set's of tyres and a set of mags out of me

Care to expand on your method? :duh
barls ·
hes adjusting the toe in/ toe out on the front end
oval TOFU ·
yeh, I know, just wanted to know how he does it exactly.
The fronts should have 1-3mm (?) or toe-in and the rears should have about 2mm of toe-out....
btw, who knows how to align the rears? (the accurate measuring part, not the actual physical method 😉)
