65 splitty panel repairs updated 14/5

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/37335/65-splitty-panel-repairs-updated-145

frenzix ·

just got this catering panel some of you may be familiar with..

Am fixing the wheel arches from a donor bus... And will bring her down a notch.
the cargo floor had sheet metal rivited on and the original floor is ratshite.. so replacing that with repair panels i have, passenger sill is gawn, also have them.. apart from that it is a VERY rust free panel other sill and front areas are fantasticly good etc. Still 6v and original 1200..reduction hubs etc. Master cylander is cactus. but will convert to 12v soon.. anyway enjoy pics...

frenzix ·

.

frenzix ·

it undertook the ritual pressure blaster in and out and underneath.

frenzix ·

.

frenzix ·

oh its a 65

frog ·

Good for you, this panel has done some k's and owers to match,it even lived near me for a while in Noosa.
Are you leaving the logo stuff?

frenzix ·

i am not sure about the logo, we may take it back to the signage thats underneath that signage.. an old tyre company.. and then take it from gree back to original arctic white.. just maybe.

frenzix ·

yeah its had many owners.. poor bugger needs looking after.

frog ·

Go the tyre company!
Peel off the green scum....it's too modern.

frenzix ·

hehe, it will look sweet

jenz58 ·

Frenzix that's such a cool split panel...

Goodness how do you get it back to the original signage underneath...is it kinda like the archeologists do....scrape real careful....OK it's a girl question

Good luck with it...

frenzix ·

hehe , using fine sandpaper and water u just make sure you don't take off too many layers.

jenz58 ·

...OK cool....just stay off the green stuff when you do it then....you might decide to see if there's another one under the original... which would make it not the original...if you found it

Robo ·

Good score Tim
Good to see its going to a good home.
Rob...

VolksFolks ·

Tim, I Got new Master cylinder if you neew, was gonna ebay it..let me know

frenzix ·

i do andy i do, let us know how much via u2u pleeaese. Timmy

VolksFolks ·

back at ya dick!

byronbus ·

Good work timmy, be careful with those brakes, we dont want another gary now do we...

baybuscamperkid ·

would look awesome if you got back to the original signage. i have done it with the sanding method on bikes before. not hard to do, and has an awesome vintage look when finished, but very time consuming.

Octa ·

Nice... when are you dropping it?

jenz58 ·

...it took a while for that question to come up...yes when??

Well if you're doing the brakes then is that a good time to drop...same area...sort of...OK chick think again...go for it :bounce

matara ·

Nice one Tim!

Just the thing for selling homemade cakes with special ingredients in Nimbin for ya!

Any progress on the 55? Looks like those repair panels will come in handy!

Cheers

Steve

frenzix ·

55 is for sale! i just want the ute to happen

thanks people

byronbus ·

VolksFolks ·

byronbus wrote:Mate, whats the plan for the weekend? Did you spend some time with your wife today so we can play on your split all weekend?

frenzix ·

i met max french the other day barls, he knew you well

barls ·

yeah thats me mate ive managed to talk the old man in to putting a t4 2L in his karmann ghia. so the more cutting the better

byronbus ·

haha

frenzix ·

we bitched about you for hours

barls ·

frenzix wrote:i met max french the other day barls, he knew you well
yeah hes a nice bloke has known my old man for a long time. he have just about anything out at his place, last time i was out there he had a barndoor, a early bug (cant remember the year), a karmann cabro, a californian sunbug and more bugs and bus wrecks than you can shake a stick at

frenzix ·

yeah i went out there, the barny is gone... . now

barls ·

you would have been disappointed mate, the only thing he would have to bitch about me would be that i didnt buy that last bug he tried to sell me, i wasnt keen cause it wasnt a good deal.

frenzix ·

not one of the karmann cabs?

barls ·

no mate he bought a reasonable straight bodied bug but it had some guard damage and wanted to sell me the body but it was a crap deal. cause after i changed the body he wanted every thing left over from the two bugs involved

Resto64 ·

nice pick up frenz
picking mine up next week ,hey mine has those butt ugly rims that yours had on it
so i will be going the black stocky look !!!

frenzix ·

good one.. is it a panel??

byronbus ·

get broadband dude

frenzix ·

among friends

frenzix ·

I can't stand shit cargo floors.. so it as to go

frenzix ·

good night sweet baby

VolksFolks ·

looks shit! but dont they all, just cause i got a panel you had to get one! well we do need one for all the beer we will be drinking at valla 2006 hehe

byronbus ·

haha, good pics

frenzix ·

yeah it's od how the floor is soooo shit.. but the rest of the bus is good, the passenger sill is crappy too.. so that's next on the chopping block.. besides that just a little tidy up here and there .. and voila it will be a very rust free panel.. Andy i'm not drinking between now and valla next year, im going to go crazy.

byronbus ·

you drank today

frenzix ·

one beer..

koolkarmakombi ·

floor shit becuase all that cold stuff caused condesation = wet

frenzix ·

ummm yes there were shhet metal plates riveted down which wont help

VolksFolks ·

What date is Valla on guys...

frenzix ·

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/post.php?action=newthread&fid=75

BenettonVW ·

I've got those plates riveted thing happening.. Giving me the shits big time.. Cause you know that when you drill those rivets out.... SURPRISE!

Grr...

Welcome to the Panel Club.. 😉

frenzix ·

yessss btw this was advertised as a "rust free split" .. yeah besides the rotton floor and the sill... From underneath the floor didn't look to bad, cause the sheet metal was there...

byronbus ·

haha, rust free

byronbus ·

is the pope alive

Stealth ·

Good on ya mate, Panels rock!!
Keep up the good work.

frenzix ·

We took the floor out today, just have to do sonme tidying up

frenzix ·

Passenger sill was full of newspaper and bog..

frenzix ·

sill had to come off.. the other sill is ok.. just a few holes here and there.. will fix properly..

frenzix ·

the end result, have to get the dremmel onto the spot welds and edges etc to tidy up.. I will be replacing the jackpoints on the passenger side too as they are a little dodgy

frenzix ·

.

frenzix ·

this area was a little fiddly.. dremmel will come in andy once again

frenzix ·

and here you can see the passenger sill is out

frenzix ·

end of a good days work. Beer time.

frenzix ·

i have just ordered some new wheel arches.. will do these at the same time

byronbus ·

nice work, but you drank all my beer you bastard

byronbus ·

haha, and this had no rust...had lots of newspaper...and we cut the floor for fun, but will have no rust...

BenettonVW ·

Plenty of bog and newspaper, but no rust. 🙂

Always fun making those 'little' discoveries.. I think we've all found things like that. My battery tray is currently made of fibreglass and is currently pop-riveted on.. Oh yeah.. real dandy.

It's all just part of the fun.
Looking good mate. I haven't touched my floor yet. 1mm cutting disc?

frenzix ·

1mm it is.. they burn up quick .. i have used about 15 already.. also get a cold chisel and good mallet for those spot welds, if the floor is crappy they are too hard to find to drill out. Another good tool is a dremmel. about $100 and will help for the finer finishings.. Good luck with yours mate!
tim

byronbus ·

haha, a dremmel

karmannghia60 ·

Well done Tim, so my description wasn't far off hay! 😉

Dasdubber ·

Good to see you're doing things properly! Great stuff.

By the way I love your work boots in the pic where you are chiseling - I get in trouble for wearing thongs! :P

MikeM ·

Were are you getting the rust repair panels from? I need a passenger sill too.

57kombi ·

Looking good Tim.
As the old saying goes.
Do it right the first time and then you dont have to worry about it.
It seems like hard work but it will be worth it in the end.

Keep the pics coming

Cheers
Dave

frenzix ·

i have a couple of rob kings floor sections... anyone else used them.. any tips?

Thanks for the good comments.

frenzix ·

oh yeah i hate wearing shoes...

frenzix ·

oh and a few i'm getting from roy (schofields), and a few from www.cip1.com (repair panels that is) and i have some of pmgbus' sills and stuff.

57kombi ·

Regarding Robs floor sections.
If they are anything like his other stuff they will be brilliant.

Cheers
Dave

robnjo ·

frenzix ·

Paddo ·

Don't ya just hate it when u don't get what u paid for, can be very annoying.😉

BLUE_62 ·

Looks like ya well in the way to restoring the ol girl back to full former glory. Good to see its getting done properly too with no short cuts being taken.... Do it once, do it right. :thumb

Dasdubber ·

byronbus wrote:haha, yes, except we were told it was a solid rust free bus...but will be rust free when we're finished with it...
Thats the main thing, so lets hope we can all enjoy watching the rebuild progress without denigrating too far into something that has been discussed at length already. 😉

Good stuff by the way, all your time and effort will be worthwhile in the long run...keep up the great work.

BJ ·

haha, yes, except we were told it was a solid rust free bus...but will be rust free when we're finished with it... [/quote]

Did you check this vehicle out?

We'll if you didn't see the vehicle I probably might be able to see your point. But if you did, it serves you right for buying it!!! It must not have been that bad if you supposive VW experts looked at it and only saw the rust when you got home.

I have travelled to Sydney and Melbourne and looked at various vehicles and have decided not to buy them. Just cut my losses on the airflight.

I think you should read the previous post and maybe grow up.

Grock ·

Ah gee, would you look at that! were out of snow cones...

BJ ·

I invitied myself, I didn't see a sign that said "Don't commend on this project if it negative" maybe you would prefer it if I said your doing a good job ( another ego trip I suppose for both of you")

and by the way I only met him once he was down the street in the van.

The final word still has to come from the buyer like no it's to rusted or yes I can repair it for a price.

bugeyedbabe ·

great work frenzix...at least its getting fixed the rite way this time....

byronbus ·

hey i helped him

bugeyedbabe ·

yeah, but then ya took off for two weeks and locked the bus it away from him.....

(probably just as well...having seen his safety foot wear he uses (air))

and the sad bit was...he keep getting on the puter to harasss us all....(u sholdl see what he posted in BA)

anyway, hope ur trip to sydney was good....now ....get back to work, and post lotsa pics for us all to drool over ok...

And if u want me to praise u byron bus...u have to get in a pic or two (with or without the safety wear) and with or without timmy...

cheers boys...

byronbus ·

haha, he had no shoes on, but i had no clothes on, would get sensored if i posted on here...

frenzix ·

hey BJ, don't start crap on this thread..... the forums already in shit just go into general and read the post by benettonVW. I take your comments on board and will reflect upon them tonight whilst i sip on my 17th martini.

Haha, your obviously friends with old mate...
We did see the rust, thats why we paid what we did...was more than we 1st expected, but the issue old friend is that it was advertised as rust free, the guy we bought it off had removed the false floor and riverted it back on and still said it had no rust and removed the generator light and didnt mention the dodgy brake cylinder, but you get that in outback Queensland...

No hard feelings, just filling you in on some home truths...and dude who invited you into the discussion anyway??? [/quote]

For every-ones information - I never took the false floor off and then riveted it back on!!! I took the guys word for it, the one I originally bought it off of, that it was not rusty underneath, why not contact this guy to find out, it was originally advertised here. And to it being rust-free, I didn't know about the sills until Frenzix asked me to take some pics and email them to him, I then realized they were rusty and told him so and Byronbus when they got here, hence the reduced price they bought it for - $5,000, original price being $6,500 I would think that fair, as for the generator light being removed, never did touch the generator, never had to always started just fine, as for the dodgy brake cylinder, seem to recall putting in a bottle of brake fluid and said something to the effect of "It does have a leak so I've put in a bottle of brake fluid", I also put in a fan belt and tool kit just in case, but I suppose you get forgetfullness in Byron Bay dude, so every-one please don't comment until you know all the facts. Frenzix said that he was happy with his purchase after all the crap that was said. And for every-one that is going to say that I hijacked this thread, I am not, if something is said about me personally I have the right to defend myself.

:bounce:bounce:bounce

frenzix ·

hopefully (if the rain lets up), will be getting a floor in the next two weeks, hopefully.

frenzix ·

More piccys as has been more progress, Today spent the whole day grinding off spotwelds and goig around edges just to clean it all up ready for welding, jackpoints are back into shape. We are goign to do all chassis/outriggers etc with POR15 before floor goes in. Passenger sill will come out as well.. thought about using metal filler but i want to do it properly and it's not going to be much more work. Used grinder and wire brush attachement to get the framework prepped and smooth. Primer on to stop any surface rust. First day in AGES without rain so we decided to take the op to get into it.

frenzix ·

fiddly area around heater channels.. but came up real smooth.

frenzix ·

mmmm ready for welding

frenzix ·

doesn't look like we haev done much but to anyone that has done this before will know it takes time to give it some attention to detail. signing out.

timmy.dskmember

frenzix ·

and got some of these off roy classicVW (pacific)..

byronbus ·

A good days work...

byronbus ·

At least we're learning what we are good at...

bob

frenzix ·

i love your bus kombibob, maybe one day they can mate?

byronbus ·

haha, dont be a mullet

[Edited on 8/5/2005 by byronbus]

kombibob ·

cool we can go halves with the puppys
but i dont think i could give any of them away

byronbus ·

bob, did you fit your safaris yourself?

frenzix ·

hehe

VolksFolks ·

haha, you are funny bruce.....

kombibob ·

yes they were pretty easy to fit the frames
the hard part is fitting the glass in the frames

kombibob ·

r u taken d piss?

byronbus ·

no, i just bought some, glass already in...how hard to line up the latches

byronbus ·

the side slide things?

byronbus ·

the others are laughing at mullets, not sure why, they are immature

kombibob ·

easy just push them hard up against the window frame/rubber directly under the latches on the frame mark and drill
with the centre hinge support i drilled two holes in the centre and welded it to the centre piller from the holes
much neater then welding around it,
would be even neater if i painted it better do that soon i think:duh
[Edited on 8/5/2005 by kombibob]

[Edited on 8/5/2005 by kombibob]

byronbus ·

ok, sounds easy, sort of...maybe i should come and drink beers and look at your bus while you do it???
I drove through he carpark at mainbeach last saturday, your bus looks sweet...

Stealth ·

Nice, I like it, keep up the good work. Splitty, splitty, splitty, oi, oi, oi 😉

frenzix ·

Maybe we can swap panels stealth?

Stealth ·

my wife and a few mates would kill me, THEN she would divorce me 😉

I cant wait to cruise withyou guys.

We will need a split panel club soon :thumb there are lots coming to circulation now!

frenzix ·

We cut the drivers sill out today, inner and outer.. THe inner was ok not rusty, and the outer was repairable.. but i have repair panels so why not just go that little bit further hey?

frenzix ·

and from the outside.. we are going to shaev a little bit more off the sill .. make it neater and straighter too. The repair panel comes up fairly high. We found a spark plug in amongst a few kilos of mud/bog in the sill.

matara ·

Tim,

I think you should trim down the repair panel to match the car, rather than trimming the car to match the panel. That way if you screw it up (or need to put another panel in down the track), you just cut up a bit further and put a new panel in. I've got the sills to do on my splitty soon!

Cheers

Steve

[Edited on 14-5-2005 by matara]

VolksFolks ·

Woha, looking great, will soon be worth 25k mate at the rate your goin, well done
