So, place your vote, what do you prefer? (note: regardless of the model of the displayed, classic beetle, it is refering to all pre-1994 beetle models)
Personally, if the New beetle was built like the old ones, (giving it that special originality that the old one had) and it was just as compatible as the old one into making "New Beetle Bajas" and buggy kit cars, I would probably like it better than the classic one. However, I think its all right, but I believe that the classic beetle beats it by a long shot.
So whats your opinion,

I will take Old over New,
Reasons:
1. I can afford the old one.
2. Old ones were made for the people, and it was cheap. New one is a little out of the normal persons reach. (same as Holden Monaro)
3. I can work on an old one in the back yard without the laptop handy.
4. More people love the old one and are happy to one that has been looked after.
However the new one has:
1. Comfort.
2. Fuel economy.
3. luxury.
But i will stick with my old '76

I prefer the old style beetle reason because its affordable to almost any one and you can drive it as is, cut it up into a baja get rid of the body and make a buggy. There easy to fix all u really need to work on it is a 10, 13, 15, 17,19 socket/ spanner and a flat and phillips head screw driver if it breaks down (not that it would )on the side of the road
Not a big fan of the new vws as they seem too technical and they are made of plastic and if i wanted a plastic car i would buy one from the toy shop much cheaper
Vws beetles aren't mean to have water in them??? whats with that

I have the new one because of modern convenience factors and the fact that I don't have to fix it myself.

Hi Chris!! Welcome to the forum to begin with! One thing you will come to know is that alot of people on this forum arn't open to change, they like what they like (which is usually classic VW's) these people have a name...which I learnt not so long ago...'PURISTS'! But really I think that stands for narrow minded, stubborn old fogies. :puke
I personally fell in love with the old Bugs, I owned a 1970 as my first car and now I have just bought a 1968. I love these because atm when I don't have a great amount of $$$ I can modify the bug to what I wish!
:sandrine BUT I LOVE the new ones!! Stuff everyone who bags them out. Eventually when I save up I am going to buy a new one and I am going to wave to every other bug I see, but I will still keep the 68'. The main thing is Chris that you buy what you want and don't listen to people's negative comments. 馃槈
vanderaj 路
I am biased as I owned one of the new ones. The Beetle has had its day, and the New Beetle is here now. It's far more comfortable, frugal, and can keep up with even the fastest of modern traffic. And stop, too. Shame about the little bits built by Bosche and Delphi (generally in Germany and engineered by Germans) which let down this (and all A4 platformed cars) from their shoddy design and too-cheap construction. Otherwise, these Mexican built beauties would be a goer.
Anyway, it's not a German 121 bubble car. It's a Californian designed, Mexican built Beetle look alike. Name one other modern car that has guards? The old 121 didn't.

And you people wonder why AVD is bagged to the $hit on other forums. You dont have an open mind to other peoples decisions and likings and you just right them off. If somebody has bought a New beetle it is their decision and liking, at least they have decide that VW is a great name to get in to. For $25000 i personally think this is cheap for a great quality built car. And if they decide to go one step further and join a forum i certainly 'wouldnt' recommend them to here. I am actually quite suprised from some of the comments on here, there were some people who i thought actually appreciated and admired the build of the New Bug. But much to my disgust you have disappointed me again. Dont get me wrong, i admire and appreciate the people who restore a classic but i dont have the time or the money to continually be replacing an item every weekend, or every second day. I dont earn alot of money, im a beauty therapist for god sake, i earn crap money. But i saved my hard earned money to buy a new bug, and i dont regret any cent of it. This is my second new bug and has set me back $..... hahaha not telling cause then that would cause more of a stir. Lets just say that it beats a WRX and also fully sic VL calais. Y2K,
As I have told you many times before, your bug is mighty sweet. There are many people both on and off this forum that would give their right arm to own (or even drive your beast!).
EVERYONE ELSE
I find it interesting that people are quite willing to say that the don't like the new beetle (fair enough, everyone is entitled to their opinion), and when the new beetle owners get defensive (and why shouldn't we, it is pretty dissapointing that people who are supposed to share our passion, bag our choice), the "classic" beetle lovers say crap that we need to get a thick skin. BUT if the shoe was on the other foot, and the new beetle owners said stuff like the older beetles are crap etc etc etc then we would have a riot.
Some people on this forum really need to practice what they preach.
I note that it was asked why Y2K is still on the forum if she doesn't like what is discussed, if you take note of her posts, she is hardly ever here, which is a damn shame as she is a fantastic girlie who is lots of fun and is very passionate about her VW. And that's what it should be about !
Most people on this forum are pretty cool, it is a pity that there are some w#$&^*% that spoil others enjoyment !
I don't agree with polls like this, I think that it just causes too much trouble.

I'm not nuts about either. I like my old Beetle because it was cheap, and I've learned a lot from working on it, but if I'd had more money to spend on a car there's no way I would have bought either. My car has endeared itself to me, but when the perfect next car comes along I don't think I'm going to feel bad for very long as I watch it's new owner drive off.
Also, why's everybody so against plastic cars? There are plenty of classic and plastic cars.

hahaha i really love this site.... just such an awesome cross section of society with the freedom to speak ones mind! i like it when shit gets stirred as all the opinions come out of the woodwork, people get pissed and others are like 'oh dear, big group hug needed! love in the air!' hahahaha.
personally i didnt see anyone really shit on new cars so far in this thread, maybve Y2K is still burnin about something said a while back.... some people on the forum do need to learn that an opinion is just that, an opinon, and not cram it down others throats... but some people maybe need to mature and be less sensitive maybe?
personally, air cooled all the way for me due to the following reasons- simplicity, original timeless designs and soul... for a lot of people the vw is like a mate, sometimes bitch hahaha.... i dislike the new vw's due to costing big $ to repair, plastic souless feel and the price tag! oh and the service you get from some VW dealerships. ive had my thread deleted where i had my rant on that issue....however 'reliability' (apart from the many lemons), smooth ride and air con are great things!
foxy_fuchsia 路
I actually think it is great people start a discussion like this...maybe once and for all we get some values across and stop this pathetic rivalry when we are all here for the same reason!! Like mscabrio said many people on this forum are pretty cool but alot are :cussing
And it's true, if someone came along and started a thread saying 'Why the hell would you drive a 30 year old, run-down pregnant roller skate, that doesn't stop back firing or dripping oil??" For one, I am positive 100% you would have a defensive comment to come back at that with and I am sure a riot would be started and alot of people would be offended.
It's not very nice to say to someone 'Well why are you here then?"...people who buy new beetles and join a Volkswagen forum like this obviously want to share the passion with us and isn't someone who randomly thought, oooh I'll buy a new beetle!! And you can always tell those types of people as they don't wave and 'don't get it'. But I think people should start showing NB owners a little respect.
And you know what AERECOOLED!! when my 68' BEETLE is complete in about a months time I will be driving around looking for cafes!!!!! Does that make me a 'style queen'? PFFT! I think you have a problem and with insults like that on this forum I think you are just jealous of the new beetles (MAYBE COS YOU CAN'T AFFORD ONE!!!). Like I said I will happily drive my old bug around until I save up MY HARD EARNED MONEY just to buy a new beetle!! And I hope by then I will be treated with more respect on this forum.

That's crap. Here's why (adopted from a post of mine in 2002).
Maybe one of the old timers here can fill us in (for I wasn't born yet in the heyday of the Beetle), but I had the distinct impression VW was NEVER in the $13,990 drive away price bracket. Never was, never wanted to be - they always thought themselves as a premium European product and traded on that.
Comparing by relative costs of Beetles versus Holdens (the Big Mac cost of living approach)
According to the Holden web site (use Google), the Holden HQ Premier cost $2394 new in 1971, which is roughly equivalent to the Holden Commode Acclaim, as the Premier wasn't a bottom scraper car. The Acclaim 3.6 V6 is second from the bottom of the range, so I think this is a valid choice. The Acclaim is $39,050 at the dealers.
In 1971, the 1500, being the bottom of the VW range then, was slightly less expensive than the Premier at $2059 according to this link:
Using the same ratio, an 1500 if sold in today's money, would cost about $33,600 now. The NB 1.6 Miami (the bottom of the NB range) doesn't - it's $25,990 RRP.
Comparing by average weekly wage
In 1971, the average male wage was $4,352 per year, meaning you'd own a Beetle 1500 in about 24.72 weeks assuming you paid no tax and could splurge a complete salary on a car. In November 2004 using ABS figures, the same average wage is $973 per week. Munging using average wage figures, this means you can own a NB Miami 1.6 in approximately 26.76 weeks, meaning the New Beetle - at worst - is only 8.2% more expensive to buy in real terms, making the adjusted value of a new Beetle 1500 if sold today at best around $24,000.
Figuring in statistical bits and pieces
Due to wage restraint, J-curves, CPI and non-CPI money-for-jam figures and the chicken I sacrificed and the spread of the tea leaves, the real purchase parity figure of a VW 1971 Beetle 1500 if sold in today's money lies somewhere between $24,000 and $33,000, and three out of four of the models of the NB range lie in that range, and the top of the range is still less expensive than the Holden Acclaim. Therefore, NB's are not a rip off => QED.
If you look at the VW range in 1971, it included the 1500 (entry level VW and entry level Beetle), Super Beetle, Type 3's, KG, Buses. Translating out, the Beetle 1500 is like a bottom end Polo, which you can have for $16,990 at the moment, far cheaper than the 1500 was in real terms. The bottom end Polo has more interior room, more passive and active safety (airbags, ABS and EBD), and more gadgets (like aircon, power steering, and a CD player) than a 1500 did, which just had high backed seats and a collapsable steering column.
Modern VW's are cheaper, faster, safer, more fuel efficient, carry more, and are thus are very good value for money.
Yours in Lies, damned lies and statistics,
Andrew

agreed. I think the biggest myth is that beetles were dirt cheap to begin with. They had less power and were smaller than their GM and ford contemporaries but they cost the same. they were marketed as a premium product because they were european.
I dont hate NB's, I just don't think they are very good value in terms of space, ergonomics etc compared to similar cars in its price range. A bit of a form over function design. Although the classic beetle is pretty crap space wise as well, although the reason is that it's design is rooted in the 1930's.

No, because modern safety standards prohibit it, and due to monocoque construction, which all modern cars use. You can't turn the 411/412 (replacement for the Type 3), Golf (replacement for the Beetle) and Passat (replacement for the Type 3 and 4) into buggies either.
The closest you'll get is a cabriolet, which has roll over protection.

Fair enough. Chrysler in the 1930's realised that the primary motivator for car purchase is not function, but design. They also started down the path of yearly model changes to encourage rapid turnover of vehicles. This is now a unversal aspect of the modern car industry.

So...you take a beetle and make it into a baja and of course it's for looks, and so they feel 'cool'! If it's not for that reason then why don't you go and buy a 4wd!
New beetles still have so much character and what Andrew said was right. If you look at the different dollar values comparing 30 years ago and now, it has changed significantly! You will find the old beetle compared to the price of the new one works out to be the same! So in reality it ain't that much more expensive! errrr, not quite right... i bought my 4 vw's because they are fun, different, have soul and character... looks also, but it was in no way the only reason that i bought vw's. if your buying something entirely based on its appearance rather then is practical functions and so on then maybe some people need to question how did they get a point in life where its no longer whats inside that counts? this is actually relevant to many aspects of society of course..... "when did i become so superficial and shallow that i need trendy items to establish and define my social status".... anyway, i'm in no way throwin rocks here, if you buy something cos it looks great to you then thats fine.. but to buy it cos you will then be considered 'cool' by your peers is a bit of a wank...
So...you take a beetle and make it into a baja and of course it's for looks, and so they feel 'cool'! If it's not for that reason then why don't you go and buy a 4wd!
this is a perfect demonstration of narrow mindness! you make a baja just so you can look and be cool! hahahahahah
go check out the off road section to see how these things perform and handle compared to a big and EXPENSIVE 4wd. people do this to get a great off road vehicle that is a volkswagen that can take a lickin and keep on tickin, unlike many modern 4wds!!
sorry if ive upset you at all, i'm just sayin how it is... i work in the auto industry and see dreamers every day come in and spend daddys big bucks to have a new car that buys them 'coolness'. at vee dubbers we tend to have a laugh at those tossers...

I didn't say appearance was everything, I said it was a major component! And then there is that VW's are fun, have soul, character ect. I agree with that! But just because something isnt 3 decades old doesn't mean it doesn't possess these things. The reason I love beetles so much, apart from what they are, is because it's like a big VW community whereever you go. And everyone else just doesn't get whats so special about them.
And with bajas yes they are great lil cars but why I said that is because I don't have any use for one which is why I would opt for a normal or new beetle. If I wanted an offroader I would go and buy a fun old bush basher 4wd to play in the mud and take on the beach. It's not that I am narrow minded it just that is my opinion, but like I have said previously everyone is different!
Unfortunately I don't have a rich daddy or trust fund so when I buy a new VW is certainly won't be about 'coolness' as you say.
~air fooled~ 路
hey did you see all the 'cool' people hiding in the bushes of the baja above!? that guys now the coolest kat in town with that mad ass black baja! hahahaha:P馃槈:P馃槈:P
dont take it personally foxy.... all you were talkin about was looks as the reason why you bought things!

Oooh, and don't take it personally 馃槈馃槑馃槈

Foxy you need to chill out. And at least get the spelling of my name right.
I was not bagging any specfic owners or the New Beetle I was just making a observation. The next time you see a N.B at the lights tell what type of person looks back at you.
The N.B is fine for people that like the Beetle shape and want all the luxs but to deny what it was styled on is a joke. And the interior is an ergonomic nightmare.
If I want to arrive at my destination in a moulded plastic aircond
clone with comfy seats I will take the bus but if I want to drive It's the CLASSIC for me. Each to there own! seylavee!
bugeyedbabe 路
know why i like the classic...well why i like MY beetle...
cost me $500.00...can paint flowers all over it, and butterflies, dragon flies lady beetles etc.....
ppl look and go ...way crazy...
but more than that...edith sings for me...each morning i go down stairs, and promise to put a new picture on her, if she sings the dak dak song...
dak dak dak dak dak dak dak dak dak dak dak
and u know what else....i bet ppl had a similar argument to this 30yo...only it was 'which is better...the ugly little beetles, or ford/holden/valient etc...
and they will in 30 more....
what do u like best...classic beetle (1994 or earlier) new classic beetle (1994+ ) or NEW beetles...(2024+ models)

I only sometimes stay here cause their are a FEW people who are friendly and accepting of what i drive. My first example of friendliness was at Valla, when i drove in i was recognised by the man himself....yes Jim Gow...he recognised me. He went out of his way to introduce himself to me. The same goes for mscabrio and handycam. The rest of Valla was a night mare from a NB owners point of view. Just look back at some of the comments on these pages and this was yelled at myself, mscabrio and handycam everyday of our stay. And these people werent being discret either, at our face as we drove past. Some of them were probably peeps on here. Oh well thats life hey

y2, thats so mean...to hear ppl treated u like that is just incredible...
tell u what...
i'll grab a cabin at valla, and forget it being about what u drive...anyone can come...but u have to sit a 'nice' test...no-one is permitted to bag another persons car....u all have to sit and find 5 ncie things about every one elses ride, write it down, and hand it to them (with ur name at the bottom)
so whenever ppl are mean to u here ont he forum, u can get all those little peices of paper out and see that not everyone hates ur ride...

I still don't see much of this demeaning going on...
Quite a few bag the cars cause after all it usually comes up as "What do YOU think of them?"
But consistently a few NB owners take it to mean they hate them personally.

SOME N.B owners have a Complex.

I really think this type of "POLL" should go into it's own caterory so we can read all the crap from both sides in the future. These discussions do absolutely nothing but stir up emotions and shit that just makes us all look stupid.
I wonder if the internet was started in the 60's would we have polls asking: Do you like the old classic 40/50's split window/oval window compared to the "NEW" Beetle with padded dash, big rear window, disc brakes, stick shift auto, dual port motors and all that fancy stuff?? Bloody yuppies in there "new" 70's beetle 馃槈

Well ALL VW's Air or Water will be very welcome at this Sundays (17th) VW Jamboree in Melbourne.

I think people try and get personal on here and what I first sensed when this topic was posted was that a few people were trying to in a way 'attack' Chris, the new guy. People can have there opinion but you can discuss it in a decent way where no gets upset...I mean saying a nb owner has a complex?!
I just think we should be able to talk about things like this without slander because after all they are all VW's!!

You want everyone on this site to have an opinion(yours) or otherwise they are slanding or belittling other owners? get real! the question was put, people answered, some added comments or observations. I have reread all the thread and no one person was slandered. I am not jealous of the N.B Y2K has a nice Beetle with lots of trophies to prove it , but it is not my cup of tea. If that makes me a Purist old fogey, whos car breaks down and I smell like oil,(your words) then I will wear that as a badge of honor. So brand me now and file my life under CLASSIC OWNER/DRIVER.:thumb

No disrepect, but have you ever driven a new beetle ? I am happy to take you for a drive in mine. Believe me it is no plastic childs car !!!!
Once you sink your ass into my cabrio's heated leather seats you will realise that it is pure quality !
As for it only being a city car, I only want a city car. If I wanted a car to go off road I would buy a BIG FWD, not a chopped up old beetle

When you find 20 inch rims for the new cabrio, then let me know. I can't find anything bigger than 17's !!!!!
What do you mean when you find 20inch rims?
Nearly every tyre place sells 20inch + these days.
I walked into Tempe Tyres and he said please tell me your putting 20+inch on that. I said no just 18" thanks LoL
Y2K 路
yeh but what he says and what he would find out are two different things, as far as i know you can not get a 20x7.5 inch rim, well maybe in america. The offset on our bugs are a weird set up, very rare indeed:P and thats as wide as we can go with out putting wider guards on. I know when i dumped mine with the coilovers its not as low as it can go. the wheels are stopping it from going further, but i do believe a 65-70mm drop from standard height is enough for now馃槈

Yes mscabrio, you can find 20inch rims for it anywhere you just have to find out stud pattern/offset ect but they can do that for you, but any rim that has that same stud pattern will fit. Just dont go to Bob Jane!! Go to a place specialise in mags like Ozzy tyres, tempe tyres...do a search in google or look in the yellow pages.
I put a piccy below to show you some hot beetles with wheels from Ozzy Tyres-

hehe, yes Ozzy = australia I gather and I have had so many friends go to Bob Jane and get ripped off and they will try and sell you there brand, no one elses. Have a look at the temp tyres website...
They deliver anywhere in oz and you could just get your local mechanic to fit them and balance them? But there would have to be a place like this in Vic!

I vote for classic.... because its classic, and the other is a funny shaped mexican golf. Even though I have displayed my lack of affection for NB previously, I do find myself attracted to the aquarius blue cabrio. But it has to be aquarius blue. I almost like Mellow Yellow, but not quite.
What is it about tempe tyres????? Why does every second ricer cruise around with a back window full of TT sticker? Shits me to death. Are wheels and tyres so cheap that you would feel obligated to drive around giving free advertising for eternity?
You find a lot about tyre quality when you try to drill a 2 inch hole in them... which you do a fair bit of when maintaining a race track. Drilling through a Bob Jane 'out of rounder' will give you the giggles.

Woooooohooooooooo, My cabrio is Aquarius blue, I hated it at the start, I wanted Harvest moon but had to wait too long. But now I am so glad, it is my fave cabrio color and not that common!
So is that what that the TT sticker means ? I have seen it on Nissan's but never knew what it meant

Tempe tyres will drill the rim to fit your car. As you will find alot of there tyres come with no holes and they get drilled out to suit your car.
You could fit 20's easy. As long as your sensible and dont want the tyres sitting inside the gaurds.
Which bug are you talking about Y2K, Im guessing the new one? 馃檪
Ohh Theres this new bug near me. its that Green colour but the owner has bought everything possible chrome for this car. heres a list.
ALL CHROME:
Mudflaps
Fuel cover sticker
Door Handles
Scratch plate
Round the window chrome trim
Round the door chrome trim
Round the boot lid chrome trim
Rings round the lights
Ugly Front chrome cover looking stick on grill.
Id hate to see inside of it. They must of just selected every part on a website for them and orded it.
Every part on this car is chrome. and they have ruined the car it looks so cheap. Not to mention it has $900 bob jane chrome wheels. This car is terrible and a disgrace to beetle. They drive past with this big grin and i laugh.
The best time was i was at the lights and i had the ugly green one infront of me, sitting there picking on it what looks shit with my girlfriend and a little kid in the car next to me looks over and gives me the thumbs up and goes "Yours looks better" hehe.
I just dont know how people can ruin it with junk. They must of spent $1000 of dollars on plastic chrome assories.
The most we have agreed to put on the new bug is Chrome door handles.
mscabrio 路
That's funny FATBUG !
The only chrome bits on my girl is her twin Porsche look alike exhaust that was custom made, otherwise she is clean. That's why I want such in ur face wheels. I am not into more chrome than that !
There is a black new beetle that is parked near work and the owners have used lots of accessories but they are satin chrome and it looks a little funny
FATBUG 路
Yeh some people go abit overboard and think it looks good.
We only have Chrome rims and a Chrome Dual Tip Exhaust by Hurricane Headers. Reccomend anything by them.
The exhaust place i go to has about 12 units and its liek a complex and they do everything to do with exhaust and even make there own systems. They do a top job. www.liverpoolexhaust.com.au
