G'dat peoples,
Alrighty, the 91 twinny i checked out the other day sold, just as well, 2 pricey for me at $13000 and really prefer the older look.

So have just checked out a 75 twin, body rough, rust in spots, paint worn back to bare metal in spots, interior bit shabby , but damn, I love it.
What's wrong with me? 馃檪

So he's asking $6000 ono, very friendly fella. Seems to trundle along well, he seems to think it's a 1600but not quite sure, and I really don't know.

Now the dilema is they seem really rare here in Perth, so I've searched thru the board looking at prices, how to know if it's a good buy?
He'll probably go just below $5000.
Wondering if it's worth trying to get one from interstate, what a pain....

Any advice or feedback greatly appreciated, I have a good gut feeling about it, even though she's a bit rough, though a lot of work needs to be done in the fixem lookum niceerest body type thing.... 馃檪

some for sale on here in Sydney with no reg but blueslips in good condition for around that price just check in the buying and selling of cars

Paid the same amount for mine, but it was in excellent condition. I took my time though - over twelve months to find one, and I would have seriously looked (full mechanical and roadworthy inspections) at about five or six before deciding. The biggest trap with twin cabs is that they are comparatively rare, with the few that were around leading a hard life, and therefore the price is generally high, reflecting more their rarity value than a good solid vehicle.

If you do buy a rough one;ie floor rusted, gates trashed, battle scars, no rego, etc, then keep to around $3500 or less for a Bay. You'll need the cash to fix the panels. - the rear floor area is particularly time consuming. 1800cc or 2litre is better for all round driving.

$6000 plus should at least buy a straight Bay twin. It wouldn't need to be pretty, but avoid the rust and panel work for this price. Splits are a different matter. If you find a split twin for sale then that's a miracle. If you find one that the Flinstones didn't reject then you're onto a good deal.

They are worth the effort though. There's a picture of mine on the opening page of the website, www.vwma.net.au

Cheers
Craig

The Old Dual Cab Kombi .... I would say that a good dual cab with a Roadworthy and some rego should pull between $5000 - $10 000. If you pay less then that you have to expect some issues. With a D/C I would strongly recommend you get a third part inspection as most have had a hard life.

Due to the design of the tray rust is very common in the sills and rear floor, be carefull.

I paid just over $7000 for mine. I was after a good straight body. Even at over $7000 it still has a couple thousand dollars worth of rust / body work to be done. It is ,however, the best driving kombi I have ever had and one of the straighest D/C I have seen.

AT the end of the day you get what you pay for. If you are going to buy out of state then make sure you get a full written report from either the RACQ / NRMA or a reputable VW show. Information and inspection is the key.

For what it's worth, I have looked at quite a few recently.. After the hasty purchase of one that turned out not so good, I am prepared to take my time and be patient..

I have a 71 that was relatively rust fee but shabby.. It had a great 1835cc setup.. I bought for 6500 and have spent (say) 4000 on it.. It is a daily work ute and is bloody beautiful..

I have a 75 that was bought as a resto.. It had known rust issues but I was still prepared to take a shot at it.. i bought for 2000 and (after some preliminary work) turned out to be too far gone for the prioject in mind.. it is now a parts donor..

I have a 78 that is needs a full ground up resto.. No motor or g/box, some minor rust but NO structural rust) I bought for $300

I am looking at about 5 others right now.. most are overpriced..

I sent the following to someone else that was looking..

"I guess you can put them in 4 categories..
1/ In need of full restoration $500 - 2000
2/ Tidy and running but NOT rust free and will need attention at some stage $2000 - 6,000
3/ Good examples, no major rust issues and can be driven and enjoyed without foreseeable problems $5,000 - 7,500
4/ Restored, rust free examples $7,500 ++"

I've got one here in Adelaide.
'76 model.
Subaru EA82 engine.
NSW rego till October.
I'd put it in StenGuns category 2.
$2500.
You could drive it back to Sydney tomorrow.

Wow fellas, thats some great info...
And Buggy Brad and Craig, cheers for pics, i am now green with envy 馃檪

I'd say the one I'm looking at fits into stenguns number
2/ Tidy and running but NOT rust free and will need attention at some stage $2000 - 6,000

It has 2 dents which I might be able to fix myself, the rear gate has been badly hit and rusted out in a corner, looks a pain to fix.
A bit worried by a 1600 motor, though she seemed to hum along fine, sat on 100k no prob.
Though what she will be like with some weight i don't know.
Will have to look into how much a spray job is these days...

thing is here in W.A they seem damn scarce, plus i want one NOW 馃檪

So, vwtyp2, email sent your way, lets see what ya got馃檪
Cheers fellas

If you look into the engine bay and tell me what the engine number is I can tell you what engine.

Also if the engine looks flat with twin carbs or if it is upright sort of with a single carb in the centre. If it is a 1600 then it should be upright with a single carb.

Any idea on what revs it is doing at 100 ? That will also help us tell you what it has.. or take pictures.

booga 路

Hey Brad,
Pretty sure it looked upright, and at the moment single carb, he says he spent 3 grand getting it rebuilt a year ago????
Sounds extreme?
It used to have twin carb, added xtra i believe, he took them off as needed adjusting all the time, and lots of red dust where he lives.

No rev counter, foot to the floor.
Also i thought as the paint is worn back so much, maybe that's ok, as i didn't see any patch jobs, prob original paint.
Oh, btw, he's also the fella who bought the 1991 D/C i looked at, $13000, that's why he's selling this one....

And also, how to tell if clutch is worn?

ever looking,
Boogs

Fossil 路

$6k is steep for that and sure you'd pick up a better one for similar money and less to spend

booga 路

Damn, I'm hooked here, no work 2day i see 馃檪
Fossil, he says he'll go about $4500

Being a sculptor, i kinda like the old paint look, mm, scarey to think what my sculptures look like you think馃檪
WAs wondering if i could take out the dents, fix rust and clearcaot it?
oh dear.......

StenGuns 路

It sound like your onto a good thing.. I like that fact the paint sounds original so there is nothing hidden..
If it's a type 1 (upright motor) that has been setup to run twin carbs AND if he's spent that type of money on it, It could be an 1835. This makes your spend all much the better.. Try and get him below 4k

StenGuns 路

Also.. get some good pictures
