Hi all,
I took my kids to the Australian War memorial here in sunny Canberra over the weekend....as they hadn't been for years. One of the things I wanted to do is get a good current photo of the Kubelwagen which they have on display.
Of course...guess what....it was recently removed to their work area for a minor refurb. Apparently it had some rust starting to appear, as well as some scratches and marks from the general onlookers (it was not roped off, visitors can basically hang off it). They believe it will be gone for another couple of months, before returning for display.
Thought you all might like to know...I'll keep you posted if I find out more.
Here are some of its more interesting details:
- The vehicle is incomplete with many items missing. This includes the spare wheel, the dashboard, a windscreen wiper motor, both wiper arms, both side mirrors and all the door handles.
- The engine is non original and is a post war Volkswagen beetle unit.
- The bullet holes in the windscreen are thought to be original.
- This particular vehicle served with the German Afrika Korps and was brought to Australia from Bardia in Libya. The markings indicate that it was attached to a field artillery unit of the 15th Panzer Division.
