A sydney club has to run one of these, and not on a Huntley weekend. OK, so this isnt entirely original, I have stolen it from the US. Its a poker run.
You have a cruise to some location, but on the way, you stop off at 4 locations and pick up a random envelope with a card in it. When you get to the final destination (a look out or pub, whatever) you get the final card. The best poker hand wins a prize of somewhat, just something little, maybe a little trophy.
Maybe you could run it with navigation run type questions on the way, maybe you would be able to swap cards with others on the way.
There's probably more details to be thought of. But firstly, is it a good idea or is it lame?
CoopGirl ·
Why does a club have to run it??
Why can't it be an AVD event??
Maybe a few people from each state could become the AVD social organisers and on the same day in each state we could hold a National Poker Run!! Well maybe that is going too far.... but I am serious about the AVD social committe.... I'll be the first to put my hand up.

I already organise 6 hillclimbs per year so I am very reluctant to offer my assistance. Anyone can run it. An individual, a business... I only said Sydney because I want to go! Shoalhaven or Illawarra is fine too. Probably better since that is where I am.

Poker runs have been done before. Even in the VW scene.
They are great fun cause the winner is random!
They are popular with bike and rod clubs.
If proves popular Coopgirl and I can get one together pretty easily....
squizy ·
I like the idea of state AVD organisers.....interesting concept.
CoopGirl ·
I'm on the ball today! lol
However.... as there are so many members in NSW maybe we need Southern NSW organisers and a Northern NSW organisers.

Where do we stop?
Maybe just a calendar organiser... Someone who maintains a calendar that is viewable by all. Someone dreams up an run/event/happening, looks for a free weekend. Get's a few people together and gets it happening. Put the major events on there too.
Coopgirl and I organised several events under the banner of "No Clubs, Just Dubs" (while we were still members of a club). A few things went off quite well.
Just gotta watch that the events don't get swamped by clubs. Fine if members come but when they go in regalia and the like they tend to stick together and not associate/mix which was the point of organising things through here....

Errr and the insurance thing?
HotRodMatt ·
amazer wrote:Errr and the insurance thing?
Don't rely on any club event being covered by insurance.
Just ask the insurers. If a single car there is known to the organisers to be not 'legal' then there is no insurance for the whole event.
But that's a side matter...
As far as I have been advised, insurance is only a requirement for an "officially" organised event. A bunch of people turning up at a publc park for a barbeque requires no more insurance than the vehicles they turn up in being registered and insured.
The advice I have received also implies that a group of people can meet up at a certain point, discuss the best route to get to another point and travel at the same time to said point and not be considered to be an "organised" event.
Infact, this is preferable to a club cruise as liablility is limited to individuals involved any any "incident". Where as if a club that is not legally incorporated partakes in an "organised" event liability belongs to any or all members.
The legislation that protects people organising family reunions in parks is the same that protects people organising affintity groups meeting in public places.

Well I assume that posting a poker run on aussieveedubbers, putting cards into envelopes and handing them out is at least a slightly organised event. Its going to be hard arguing against it.
I know I wouldnt be involved in organising or 'not organising' anything without having some insurance. Absolutely nothing at all. Lets say for eg if someone slips or trips and damages some knee ligaments. Its going to mean a lot of time off work. They are going to want some money from somewhere to pay for the car and the house loans. Even if they lose the case, you are still going to be out for legal expenses. Insurance isnt an option.
squizy ·
That's why a lot of us are now into "non-clubs"....just groups of people who just happen to meet up at the same destination.
HotRodMatt ·
And why we left (well one reason) a club.
It's insurance wasn't worth anything because the club knew that a number of cars hadn't been engineered which had modification that required engineering. All they had to do to get around that was make the members sign each yer with their renewal a statement to the club that to the best of their knowledge the car/s they take to events are legal, registered and insured - putting the onus on the individual for their legal compliance.
Also they weren't properly incorporated. (Good idea to check the incorporartion of some other clubs - they are public documents - and make sure they have limited liability.) When not incorporated (or incorporated without sufficient limitation of liability) if insurere says we're not covering that because... the aggreived can choose to sue any or all members of the club.
The RTA and Legal Link type organisations in each state are happy to tell you what is and isn't an "organised" event.
amazer ·
Yep I understand that, but from my non lawyer background, I say its rather fallible. The person who gets injured is quite possibly also a member of the non club, and when his or her lawyer gets up on the floor and starts stating how a non club is exactly the same as a real club only without a constitution then the finger is going to be pointed at some one.
I dont see the point of a non club either. Just find one where you fit in and go with the flow and the insurance. About 10 yrs ago I didnt like Illawarra so I moved to Sydney. I'm happy now. I assume I am just missing the point.
Anyway, dont let me hijack my own thread with insurance worries. I just want someone to organise or non organise this non event becaus eI think it would be fun.

The Sydney Hells Angles just held there annual Poker run.
so where do we start from ??? and we need at least 5 people to be at different location to hand out the cards etc ...
HotRodMatt ·
You don't actually need anyone at the locations....
I've been on two, one were there were people handing out cards at 6 locations - you could dis and swap at the last.
The better one the cards were at certain locations, you had to discern by clues given at the first meeting point (breakfast). When you had all five you went to lunch at another location. You then opened the cards to see what you had.
Five businesses provided the sausages and rolls and drinks. Their name was on one of the five cards. - The cards were just photocopied with the business card and taped shut.
The new Sydney Corridor (Regional Park) looks good, good facilities, close to M4 and M5 and lots of open space.... First stage on Elizabeth Drive just opened...

When I did the navigation runs for WSCC I just picked a friendly looking business along the way. A Milk Bar, Service Station etc. Once I got people to go in to FM spares and ask for a beetle radiator cap, in return they got a token. I've also had them ask for a half cooked sausage and things like that. If they dont give the exact wording as on the paper, they dont get the token, at least if the shop plays the game. Another time I had the evil thought of not letting the shop in on the game. That would be so fun to have a hidden camera there. Start from Wollongong Lighthouse and end up at Shellharbour 🙂 Or you can start somewhere in sydney and end up at cataract dam...

I'd rather not go on the Poker Run if it was organised by a club and just organise an AVD BBQ at a nice park. We don't need insurance for that!
Clubs organise club events for club members and prospective members..... I don't want anything to do with a club... I want social outings with like minded people from this forum. I don't want to attend some clubs recruiting session.

Well that was my original suggestion.... A couple of people from each state form a social committee (even if it is just for one outing ) and each state holds a poker run on the same day. I thought it would be a bit of harmless fun.... but..........
amazer ·
You can organise it Coop, no problems at all. Just let me know the start time/venue.
ClassicVW(pacific) ·
ClassicVWpacific will donate a prize no problem.
How about have a registration fee of a couple of dollars and all proceeds go to the Laeukemia foundation, or a similar charity

If you are volunteering to organise the Qld one... then that's fine with me.

Then you will need insurance....

If you supply date time rules etc I am sure the clubs up here wouldn't mind getting our heads together
