The Wollongong Sporting Car Club is targeting young
drivers looking for off-road sites to test themselves.
Events secretary Chris Fraser said the club, which runs
regular hillclimbs and other events, would like to get
drivers off the streets and into a safer, more controlled
environment.
Years of Operation: 53
Number of members: Around 60
Aims of the club: To provide a grassroots level of motorsport and an outlet for those who wish to have a bit of legal fun in their cars.
Membership restrictions: Members cant get involved in competition until they are 14 but youngsters can get involved in officiating or other duties.
Meeting times: 7:30pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Illawarra Motoring Museum on Northcliffe Dr, Kembla Grange.
How did the club start: A group of motoring enthusiasts got together in 1952 to organize reliability trials and similar events and gradually it developed into what it is today. Our members have competed in all levels of motorsport from observation runs and motorkhanas to drag racing, speedway, hillclimbing, rallying and endurance events.
Most enjoyable aspect: I enjoyed competing but have now stepped more into the management side of things and get a great out of organising events.
Major annual events: The NSW hillclimb Championship is one event we host and this year will be held on May 15 at Huntley Hill, West Dapto with drivers coming from all over the state. Another major event is the Bathurst Speed Weekend held in December and open to members of CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) affiliated clubs.
Why did you join the club: I was about 18 with my first car, a Kombi Van and I wanted to have a bit of fun in it off the streets and without the prospect of losing my licence. I was never going to win any events but it was so much fun.
How long have you been a member: Around 14 years.
Final comment: We are trying to get some younger people into the club and I would encourage anyone interested in motorsport to come along and see what we are about. We run six hillclimbs per year, which are single car events. Entrants compete in 6 categories depending on the type of vehicle and the extent of modifications and each has different classes for different engine capacities.
