My local chamber of commerce is organising their inaugural "OLD BAR FESTIVAL" for the October long weekend. The theme is going to be "OLD" ie. old cars, old boats, old planes (we have a small air strip that light planes can use), old this and old that etc.etc.
Anyway one of the ideas being tossed around is to set the "Guiness World Record for the number of Kombis in one spot", aparently there is no current record.
I know "Kombi" is more of a colloquial (sp?) term for the different Type 2/transporter models so we might be looking for a more accurate description that would encompass all the models up to current day in an attempt to get a larger official number, so any advice or information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Basically after a show of interest so I can give this idea a bit of a push along and if people could give me club contact info so I can pass it on.
I am not part of the organising committee or anything, I just think its a great idea and trying to get it off the ground.
OLD BAR is on the mid north coast of NSW about 350kms from Sydney 1/2hr from Forster and 1hr from Port Macquarie.
Thats long winded enough for now so give us your thoughts and I'll get back with more later.
Cheers

spring, five months away, plenty of time to plan
blutopless2 ·
great idea... would be cool to see heaps of kombis in one spot.
57kombi ·
Sorry to rain on your parade but<
there would have to be over 500 as thats how many they had at vanfest in the U.K a few years ago.
Cheers

five months away long weekend worth a shot no yeh lets go for it
waltermitty ·
Dave if the vanfest 500 were not ratified (witness by thier officials)by guiness then iI dont think they will recognise it. So there may be a chance Mitchell
type_one ·
100%. No guiness official no Guiness record. Still if it was done you could say it was done officially first in Australia. Of course vanfest would cream the record the very next year.
t2 ·
might be on the road by then if so i will be in
winerot ·
500 ! there would be that in nsw alone ive got 4
post only went up yesterday im already planning
on driving down in 5mths with one in tow for show
Special Air Service ·
I know that there has probably been more in one location than what we will be able to accomplish but I think the idea is to create the first "official" record surely we would all like to be able to say we were all part of that. I dont drive a kombi so I wont be able to claim it as my own, I just thought it would be cool for this to happen in my home town. This may end up just being me pissing in the wind but I'm going to give it a little push along.
Cheers

Dont get me wrong I think its a great idea.
I just love it when groups of kombis get together.
Good Luck.

I'm in but this is what we are up against:-

that is cool ..
HotRodMatt ·
There isn't that many in that pic... easy to beat!
A GPS and an ever better image can be made with those buses!
looks like you have more competition from those bloody pommes.

There into bloody everything.

Dave
Special Air Service ·
It would appear as though we are up against it
Beerboy ·
yes but everyone loves the underdog. so lets go for it. count me in.
57kombi ·
You might have a chance after all.
On the Split Screen Van Club site they are talking about the attempt organised for 7th of August and saying that not many will be going as they are charging about $45 for the privalige of being part of the attempt.
Good Luck.
Cheers
Dave
Beerboy ·
yeah exactly but then again I doubt they are interested in the record and more in the 45 bucks x the amount that do turn up.
Special Air Service ·
So you are all saying "Lets have a crack at it"?
I spose the worst that can happen is that we end up with shit load of kombis/vw people at the one spot. I could be run out of town.lol.
winerot ·
sas they wont run you out this would be a economy boost.
anyway sounds like you might have some input with the town
organisers, keep pushing this idea on here for about a month & see
replies if it looks good aproach the organisers & lay it out for them
as maybe they could go with it as part of the promo for the event.
ppl its 5mths away middle of spring & a long weekend to boot(labour day)
nsw canberra & sa three days & as the post says cars, boats & aeroplanes
lots to enjoy, spread the word throught the different clubs, mates with kombi's, this could be the perfect oppportunity for a world beater.
barls ·
try hastings vw club mate they might be able to help you also the local vw mechanics
Special Air Service ·
I'll keep bumping this to the top every couple of days, if I have got anymore important info to pass on I'll put an update date in the subject box so you will know I'm not just bumping it.
Keep the ideas coming, tell all your clubs/associations, mates, friends and enemies. And as it appears the other records are for "VW Campers" I need all you kombi/transporter freaks to come up with a way of being able to include all models (panelvans, campers, buses, utes from 19?? to 2005) or as many as we can to boost numbers. And although kombis are the main ingredient if you drive one of the other "types" as I do you would be most welcome to come along.

This is still on the cards, hopefully I will know a bit more by the end of this weekend coming.
Aparently there was a Kombi in the TV show "Seachange" a couple of years ago called "Daisy" and it is now supposed to reside in the local area. The organisers are trying to track it down i think to use it as a kind of mascot or something, so if anyone remembers this kombi and you know what model/colour/number plate etc it was/is can you please let me know so I can help track it down.
Cheers

barls ·
daisy i remember a kombi called daisy not sure if its the same one but the old man services one called that he might be able to give you a lead on it
twoguns ·
as i said b4 i have one split registered, and another coming soon ( well soonish, or in hte near future when i pull my finger out) anyway, i will have at least one if not two there for ya. 🙅

Special Air Service ·
OK, this is definitely happening on the October Long Weekend and the organisers are hoping 500 Kombis will turn up (got to aim high). This is an official guiness record attempt. There will also be awards for "oldest", "newest", "most miles/kms on the clock", "best decorated", "most people in a kombi", and I'll try for "longest distance travelled to attend",and I will attempt to get a swap meet put on the agenda, to give you guys another reason to turn up. This is not a "car show" so we want all kombis not just the shiny ones, and it appears as though it is for all models from day 1 through that rolled off the assembly line yesterday.
This is to become an annual event so if you all show up the first time it will help ensure it will continue for years to come.
So can everybody please drop me there club contact details so we can get some information around to people.
More later on.
Cheers

I have an idea that they had 800+ vans, bus's and campers, both splits and bays in California some years ago.
BUT the Yanks also held the world record for "trucks" (UTES) but we knocked that off so go for it.!!!!!:thumb
World Records that we are attempting to set on the day include:
The largest gathering of VW Campervans- Official record set by the Canadians in 1999 and stands at 489 Campervans.
VW Campervan cramming- the most amount of bodies in a campervan. This is a new record you shall set.
VW Beetle Cramming- the most amount of bodies in a beetle (currently set at 25).
The fastest engine switch- record set by the Germans using a beetle at 1 minute and 37 seconds.
amazer ·
whats the date?
winerot ·
labour day long weekend 1st oct to 3rd
it suits vw's are a labour of love.
but reading in events forum not sure which one
its not just vw's theirs old cars, boats & planes
on show & i would imagine a festival type of
long weekend.

i am at buellfest that weekend... big ride with the fellow buellers from port mac to gingers.nn[ Edited on 9/7/2005 by twoguns ]
65busser ·
Pity it's so far away for Vic and SA T2's. A more central location would give the record a good nudge. And maybe at a time when there are likely to be more in the one place at the one time....like the Nationals for example.
Special Air Service ·
I am hoping you are now able to see the official poster, registration form & car window invitation. Please feel free to print these out and put them in your place of work/business, give to your kombi driving friends, post them on your club websites etc etc etc.

I've got all the info from the Chamber of Commerce, the running order of the weekend, times, entry form $5 (not to me, the price of entering). They sent it to Indian Autos among others, where I was shopping. They are gonna post it on their site for folks to download later this week they said.
I got a copy if anyone wants one.....electronically......
Special Air Service ·
I too can send anyone these if they provide me with their email address.
More on the weekend.

oh and thanks for dropping some forms off to my old man

OK so the "kombi record" part of the weekend is to be held on Saturday October 1st and yes at this stage we will be competing against the record of 489 in Canada. And as there are "markets" to be held at the same time in the same general area I have been given the go ahead to tell anyone who is interested in a "swap meet" (traders included) they can do so as part of the markets, it will cost you $20 for a site/stall so bring all those parts you want to unload.
We are hoping to get aerial photos of the kombiswhen they are assembled.
There is also going to be the following non kombi related activities spread over the saurday & sunday: tennis tournament, rugby sevens tournament, baketball shootout, day/night cricket, quilt & craft displays, classic cars, old time dance, parades, pony rides, jumping castle, slides & light aircraft activity (we have a small airstrip).
So come one, come all.
More later
Cheers
