nbturbo, they are twin duel 50mm throttle with and old old haltech computer, motor is 2332cc 84x94 street eliminator heads and 1.4:1 ratio rockers and a custom grind cam. Made 136.1hp at the wheels but injectors were leakin soo this time i hope to see some more numbers.

Alex-those monsters are quite large for that engine-do you have any probs with low end throttle response? Obviously you don't run a MAP sensor with the monsters.Your fan shroud turned out really good.Love the colour.Painted mine Coca Cola red. What brand are the Throttle Bodies.Like how the injectors are in the middle.Good for clearance and fuel rails.

looks great alex
Alex Holzl ·
thanks people!
they are monster valves too. when it was running before it wheel spun off the line and pulled like crazy through the gear. They are microtech throttle bodies, even with the fuel rails on the inside i still had to cut a wedge out of the middle of the manifolds to make the throttle bodies clear the body! Yeah im very happy with my fan should and tinwear it needed a good refresh! do you have a picture of ur fan should?
here is the old dyno sheet with the 1.25:1 rockers.

Hi NB,
Are you going to run a intercooler behind the Fan shroud?
You could fit a plenum and cooler and then you wouldn't have to run the pods on the side.
I have been researching this quite a bit lately as I trying to get the whole lot to fit in engine bay with a normal fan and I think I have found a way. The way you have set it up looks very similar to some of the setups in the US which have proven to be great but with the extra space you have I think you could do better. Email me and I'll send you some ideas.
Looking good!
T54
nbturbo ·
I'm not going to fit a turbo-just injection with single centre throttle body.I have to plug the ends and fit a cross over pipe and the TB mount.Haven't built it to turbo-set the CR too high for that-running 9.5:1.
Alex Holzl ·
Hey NB
sorry didnt reply to you email my inbox got wiped. The red looks awsome, did you spray it or was it red gell coat? What size Type 4 is it?
A little update on my car, not much has been done just getting things machined again and again. Put some new tyres on my Simmons and put them under the guard as its on jack stands. OH and make some brackets for an RX7 oil cooler under the front bar. ( I know its gonna look ugly but sometimes things have to be done.)
alex
nbturbo ·
I bought it with a red gelcoat-but it looked shithouse. No, I had it painted in a 2pak with some clear. The motor works out to be 2733-82x103.It's got a forged C/W crank and forged JE slugs.I see your using the same front guards as me.I can only get 7 inch wheels under my fronts and still clear everything and have a decent turning circle.
Alex Holzl ·
Nice should be a tough motor!! same as my bros but he has 105mm pistons and barrels.
What size wheels are they 15'' 16'' 17''?
nbturbo ·
Alex,I need to run an extra oil cooler as well.I have bought a fibreglass extension to fit a Type4 cooler to a Type1 fan shroud( Mike Sharp makes them) I also bought a thermostat sandwich plate for the oil filter and have made a box using the fibreglass extension to house another Type4 cooler, and will fit it behind LHR wheel with a 4inch flexible hose going forward to a thermostat controlled fan, alongside the trans. Will only need 2 real short hoses from the filter to the cooler.Hope that makes sense.
Alex Holzl ·
Man school gets in the ways of progress on bloody car!!!
Anyhow...* Ive been busy latly rewiring the engine bay as there was just too many wires in the one area and it looked like a major mess. So ive moved the wires back inside the car and i have put the wires through the firewall straight to their location.
*I made some copper oil lines up, running from the rear to the cooler under the bumper and back again. Now just waiting for funds to build up again to get some braided lines and fittings...
*All my brakes are now on and have been bleed. I am running EA falcon rears and our custom big brake setup on the front ( porsche rotor and twin pistion brembo). All painted lookin spanky and ready for some hard use!
*I used some wider hubs to increase the front track of my car to make it handle better, so the wheels now didnt fit in the guards so after 6 months of seeing my car 1 and half feet off the ground i put her on the ground to start hacking my front guards to cover the wider front track. (takes guts to take a grinder to the paint work on your car!!!) its all good doing one side but then you have to make the second side match!!!
and and and and ummmmmm need more money and i can finish!! so close now!

Alex, is your dad manufacturing the fan housing as a kit to sell ?
Also how much trouble did you have to get your full rollcage signed off by the engineer?

Alex Holzl ·
Hey craig
We have the moulds for T1 and T4 fan shrounds and we have the specs for the mounting bracket for the T1. We dont deal with the fan bits as yet but we can get ahold of better quality alternators. So we can get most of the bits together but i wouldnt call it a kit as yet.
A full cage can be legal if the front half is bolt in and padded from shoulder height up. (It may have to be all bolt in cant remember what he said.)

Hey Alex
Why do you have that twiddle knob to play with for the + or - 10% ???
Alex Holzl ·
its for the computer. +10% means richer over the full rev range and -10% means leaner over the full rev range. i use it at the moment coz the cold start is way to rich.
alex
vw54 ·
So whats the use of having a U beaut EFI computor if u have a twiddle knob ???
Isnt the putor susposed to sort of the fuel problems ??
why is the cold start too rich do u have too big a injector ??

I have a simular issue. A vw's enrichment is tricky to setup. If you base it entirely on engine temp from the crankcase the enrichment will happen too long. Especially considering that I have 6lt of oil capacity to heat up. This means it runs rich for too long until the engine's at temperature. I ran my 1641 turbo this way.
If you use a head temp sensor for enrichment its a little better, butif the engine has run up to temperature and then cools to 1/2 temp and starts again, the computer thinks its hotter than it really is so it will run lean. My 2332 turbo is setup this way.
The compromise is to get two sensors to control additional enrichment, but all engine management i've seen uses only one sensor for fuel adjustment based on the coolant temp. A mate over seas wired two sensors in parallel with some sort of fudge it circuit in the middle to fool the efi system into controlling enrichment better. This works but the coolant sensor also tells the ECU when to switch on fans and coolant pumps so that adds an other issue.
Drivavility is the reason to run EFI, plus its the ONLY way to be able to run and tune a turbo system reliably. I can drive at 1000 RPM in 4th gear and floor it and the engine doesn't falter. It just pulls evenly. Carbs that rely on air speed to vaporise fuel can't deal with this at all. Even with the most radical of drag cams an EFI engine will still idle smoothly and run steadily at low engine speeds.
waltermitty ·
The orange roof linings from Alexes mum it was here flockarti (sic) rug from the 60's.
Hey Dave do you remember when you were Alex's age? I do I always wanted to twiddle my knob. LOL. Still dont mind occassionally.

Iswinkels,
I have been following a thread on a US based EFI site, the following may help with your sensor location:
Wide Open Tours has a fleet of 30+ VW Type-4 powered buggies. They use my ECU-422C-1. They run three tours a week at 500 miles each. The upgrade from the Weber carb has been a great success with the fuel consumption being lowered by 35%. They also use a DIS system, without a " cap and rotor " the rain, mud, dirt never stops the cars.
The best place for the CLT temp sensor I have found is in the valve cover, near an exhaust valve spring. The readings of the engines (CLT) temp are then very close to a water cooled engine.
The next main event for them is the Baja 1000 with many stars as thier drivers.
Cheers Paul
Alex Holzl ·
hey guys
I have seen on some heads a tab that is there for head temp or in our case for the cold start warm up sensor. Im thinking of changing to this soon, but i might run a thermostat on the oil lines to increase the warm up time instead.
