Wtd: beetle steel sliding sunroof section

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/38856/wtd-beetle-steel-sliding-sunroof-section

ruckus ·

I know I'm probably dreaming, but I just thought I'd put it out there... you never know.

I'm looking for a steel sliding sunroof section for my bug. So if anyone knows someone or has one sitting in a shed or something???

Thanks for any help, I'm really hoping I can sort this.

Che Castro ·

I do know someone who has 2 Golde sliding ragtop sunroofs in melbourne.

ruckus ·

Is that just to tease Jon or are you saying that they'd be willing to sell one?

vw54 ·

Vintage has one available in Sydney give them a call on 02-9789-1777

Che Castro ·

No i'm serious. The guy i bought mine off recently had 3 roofs in total. Call Andrew at Dub Customs 03 97939250. He infrequently posts here as "ab" here. These are the early style folding ragtop sunroofs if I didn't make it clear.

ruckus ·

Thanks Jon I'll check it out.

Crazy George ·

Mate they aint the 3 folds, if thats what your asking.....They are 56 onward rags.

HTH, N

Che Castro ·

yep the ones i mentioned are 2 fold 56 and later ones

ruckus ·

Turns out it's from an earlier car but will just have to cut the roof and not the pillars (the one at vintage).

What are people's opinions in terms of cutting pillars vs roof skin.

I'm leaning towards just the roof skin as I've been told it's better structurally as re-welded pillars lose integrity due to the loss of internal rigidity (can only weld the outer of the two layers).

Che Castro ·

Cut out the ragtop, step it and plug weld it into the roof. Much much easier than cutting the pillars and trying to align everything up. You're right about the skins as well, if you have seen the section through the roof it's made up of about three different bits in section - some of which you cant get to with a welder.

Doing the pillars would be more work in dressing up the welds as well i reckon, smaller and harder to get to areas (around the gutter rails) and more distortion due to seam welding instead of plug welding.

ruckus ·

Thanks Jon. It's good to have my layman's theory translated into technical lingo :thumb

Hopefully people know what I'm talking about now.

vwtyp2 ·

bugger.
I'd like a pre '56 one.

Che Castro ·

I think volksfolks had one for sale a while ago... it was $800 from memory. someone bought it though

Crazy George ·

roof skin only.. easier & safer for ur nugget protection😉

zjm ·

the roof at vintage is off a 65 and later european I bought it just for the cables then did a swap with borris for some other bits this is the same turret as we got on 68 and later cars. be aware bits for these things are real pricey
I love mine heaps😉

ruckus ·

Got any pics zjm?

vw54 ·

What year is yr Bug

ruckus ·

71 standard

ruckus ·

I've edited the original post. Thanks to all of the people helping me out with rags, but I'm actually trying to chase down a steel sliding sunroof section specifically.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear at the outset.

Why Dave?

jaksc ·

have done the conversion. Pretty straight forward job. Dont need to cut pillars or replace roof. Best of luck finding one.

Kombi_Rescue ·

FYI clayton only produced 86 sunroof bugs in1966 and 98 in 1967 thats why they are rare! dsk steve

nbturbo ·

jaksc-where did you locate all the new seals when you did your conversion? Have fitted one into an Oval and need to buy everything new. Can buy everything from Vintage Parts in the US,but maybe someone here has them.

ruckus ·

Jaksc that looks awesome!!!

Yeah all signs are pointing towards cutting only the roof skin rather than pillars. I'm still 100% on the steel sunroof over putting a Golde in as I don't think it would feel right with the earlier rag (as much as I love them). I'm much happier with the thought of something much closer to the period, don't know why because I'm certainly not a purist.

The main thing at the moment seems to be the cost of associated parts: the cables alone cost more than whole assemblies from the states.

Thanks for the pic. Do you have any more

ruckus ·

Didn't really mean it but the end result seems to be heading more and more towards this awesome swiss bug:

here's a link if anyone wants to know more:

akean1 ·

definatly looks good rob

jaksc ·

Here's one more

jaksc ·

Nearly forgot. Some parts like the cables came from vintage vw the seals and a few others came from wolfsburg west usa. I also reused as many of the original parts as i could. Hope this helps.

nbturbo ·

Thanks for that-all my mechanical bits are OK,wrecked all the seals when I stripped it for blasting.Thats a real looker you have there-well done.

nbturbo ·

Ordered all the bits today to put my sunroof back in.Got it all from Wolfsburg West. Thanks for the tip jaksc.

zjm ·

when I fitted mine I used a SYKES rola stepping tool and put a 1cm wide step in my cars roof and sat the sunroof section into it then miged it in , nice tool really worth the $500 they cost

jaksc ·

how did all the bits go. Get what you needed

nbturbo ·

Yes-they had all the seals I needed, and real cheap. All my plastic hardware(cable guides etc) was in good condition but just discoloured,so ordered all the plastic stuff as well including the handle. Will be able to help someome out with all the old stuff if they don't want it all to look new. They emailed me that everything left next morning so should be here in a week. Thanks again.

ruckus ·

Bump - still looking for the right one. Someone got a mate with one under the house or something?

nbturbo ·

Just to tease you.

squizy ·

I saw a section in Peter Korschs workshop the other day. Not sure the year. Give him a call on 43-257911.

ruckus ·

nbturbo that looks awesome!

Thanks squizy, I'll try them. I assume they're in NSW?

squizy ·

Yeah he's in NSW. Will be off today however....

ruckus ·

Still fishing 🤖

CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·

ruckus ·

Yeah that might be the go I think. A very kind forum member has sent me the ph number of the guy. I've been assured it will be no biggy (other than the correct one) to fit.

ruckus ·

Still fishing

🤓

vw54 ·

Just wanted to make sure you were not putting a steel roof in a pre 66 they look a bit odd

Much better with a steel roof in a post 66 Vintage still has that section if you want it.

It will look good in the 71

vw54 ·

i 4 got to untick the close box

ruckus ·

Thanks Dave 🙄

Nah it's going into the '71

empi ·

CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·

ruckus ·

Yeah right empi. Where's that rag you've got for me again? ...

Chris sounds good mate. Got port fairy this weekend but I can drop the lights down if you want. We still gotta get those seats sorted!
