hey guys who uses an air box instead of twin air cleaners on twin carbs. cause im looking at making my own cause the intake noise at 110km/ h is terrible. i had one based around a excel air box but its kinda rough and needs more work to refine it to a more pleasant to the eye version. so any pics of what anyone on here uses would be helpful in the design process. this is for my 2L t4 in chaos

i have often contemplated the same thing.....thought about making something out of pvc pipe and running it to a late model air cleaner.
its still only a thought but would be interested to see what others may have done...also
barls ·
i did have one but i dont have any pics of it. it was ugly but did the job.
helterskelter400 ·
i friend did this as a temp thuing for twin webers into cb filter to snorkel on a off road buggy. works so well it hasnt been changed yet; prob not on for a normal car.....
barls ·
thats along the lines of what i was thinking but with the air filter housing on the fan housing. i know i could but one in from the states but i dont have the $$$ for it.
yep...ugly..but thats the idea
question is does it affect performance and is it quiet
barls ·
thanks steve hows the bug going
phil ·
thanks steve..that answers that question
...if only i had a sheetmetal workshop

Hi Barls
No worries. My car, slow, lots of thinking which should help not going down the wrong path later on.

Hi all,
It's late at night and I might have miss-understood your question but I think that my Brother may have done something similar to what you are attempting to do with his Baja.
This air box/filter system was pinched off his '67 which runs a Type IV with an upright cooling system - so it fits on both cars without mods...It was MUCH quieter than the socks and paper filters that he tried and he felt that it made the engine run better. OK, granted it not pretty, but it does do the job.
The Air box is just a modified 'L Bug air filter box. Inside is a standard Paper cartridge filter...
I will attach a low quality pic below...If you would like more pics (or just a better quality version of the one below), just let me know and I can email it to you.
Cheers,
R 🙂

...this time I will attach the image .... D'oh
R 🙂
barls ·
thanks ratty thats similar to what im thinking of doing at the moment, im tempted to modify a lbug air filter with glass but havent had the time. the one i had was damaged in the crash. thats not good that is going slow but im sure once it gains momentum it will gain a life of its own

bus914 ·
check out the alpha sud air box. similar set up. may even fit with a little mucking around.
barls ·
ok ill look in to it
bus914 ·
here's one on a bus
barls ·
looks good mate the only problem is it wont fit in the bug with the upright conversion
bus914 ·
how about this then
barls ·
yeah thats more like it mate i might end up going something similar but with out the turbo for the moment
Bizarre ·
Richard Holzl did it on the 2.8L beast he built.
Yep - induction at about 6k + in that beast....was.....an experience!
They made it up with pvc into a common pod filter and it worked a treat.
barls ·
cool i might try to get hold of alex to see if he has some pics
jakjones ·
wow what a beast !!
oval TOFU ·
if you get pics, don't forget to post em here!
barls ·
of course mate i always share

:kiss
barls ·
anyone else or do i have to go to stf for more pics and ideas

Ultra VW had a dark blue low light ghia in it some time back with a type4 motor and a porsche fan. It was famous for burnouts or something. It had a german airbox system on it. looked really trick. apparently it's off an audi.
be worth looking at.
The other thing i was thinking was, what about a subaru EJ series plenum?
You could cut it and weld it where you needed, then just put a pod filter where the throttle body should be.
Just thinking out loud 😉
barls ·
i dont have a copy of that issue do you peter? if so can i get you to scan the pics for me and email them to me. i tried looking on the ultravw site but couldnt find the one you were talking about
pete wood ·
1st issue page 70, "burnout king"
barls ·
just went and had another look in the collection of vw mags ive got issue 9 of ultravw but no issue 1, on the upside i do have a copy of the hot vw tech book they put out a couple of years ago. does any one on here have a copy of the issue we are talking about.
pete wood ·
Just had another look at it. It's a CSP kit apparently. Check their site ...
thats what im after just did the conversion its about $1100 but i dont have the money so looks like ill have to make one
thanks peter your a champ now ive got a base disign i should be able to make one

pete wood ·
you just like cos its got horns on it :P
[Edited on 14/5/2005 by pete wood]
barls ·
maybe mate maybe :P
here on that someone else suggested but its in the same catogory
I've already got the covers as I brought them from Vintage VeeDub many years ago.
I'll see how I go.
barls ·
im only looking to make one for myself at this stage but if i happen to make something thats easily repoduced i might be convinced to sell them but we will have to see. im going to have to talk to a boat builder about glassing and ideas
barls ·
hey all just got back from the old mans work shop yesterday and was looking at a stock kombi air box in the bug but will have to wait till i get the engine in to size it up whether it will work or not
oval TOFU ·
good luck, lettuce know how it goes..
VWCOOL ·
That looks ace!
Stuff Kombi, use late-model Commodore or falcon stuff
might work ill see what i can do. im not going out to but something else just so i can cut it up ill give you the tip.
barls ·
heres one pyro found for me. thanks pyro.
ive got a few sketches going but wont try anything till i get the engine back together so i can make sure it will fit before i start cutting things up
i remembered to take a picture of the other one i made this time i was up there. its made out of a hyundai excel air box its been chopped and had another duct added so it can be run with the twin carbs
barls ·
ok its been a while since ive posted anything on this. and we have completely changed direction on this one. we are no longer using the kombi air box as a based but are now constructing our own based around a laser filter as its 200mm by 180mm in size and will fit in the area we have cleared next to the alternator. these will run in to 2 ducts that will attach to the carbs. these have come from safari filters. heres a pic of the motor so you can see the space we have to work with.
we haven't decided if the air box will be glass or steel yet and we will decide most likely next time i go up.
barls ·
just noticed i put up the one with out the carbs or linkage so here it is at a later stage
i hope this is what your after pete
pete wood ·
umm, so have you done any more to the air boxes or is it still waiting?
barls ·
it most like will get done in a couple of weeks mate its hard to do anything when your 4 hrs away
barls ·
ok finally started on one decided to modify the one that i had. so it was cut down to the just the mounting ring as shown
i then shaped a piece of styrofoam to the shape i desired
then covered the foam with plastic and then started to glass over it
next time i go up ill do some more ie cleaning up and finishing, and hopefully finish it well at least enough to get it on the car so i can get it running
barls ·
here are the carby tops
the air box now has the inlets for the carbs and is getting closer to being finished now all it needs is to be filled and smoothed so it can be painted
next time i go up ill finish glassing and prep for painting. i might even mount it then
barls ·
just did a little clean up on some of the glassing, it amazing what you can do with a 7 inch grinder
ill get some more pics when i go up in a week or so
VWCOOL ·
good work - keep the pics coming
barls ·
here a little teaser of it almost complete and in the engine bay ill have more next week after i get back
Jeza ·
Looks good Barls
You should try a manometer (the pressure difference meter using tube and water) to see if there is any major pressure drops through your intake system.
i read in fast fours that they tested some air boxs and the best one was the honda civic ,if you try one of these it may be the best bet
aussiebaja ·
the worst part about the pod systems is that if there enclosed in the engine bay they suck in hot air ,an engine will run a lot better if sucking cold air [tunnel rams ]and[ cold induction].admitadly they probably run better with pods than they do with the standard setup ,the pods look a lot better though
VWCOOL ·
Put Hoodjax on it
If you use an airbox/panel filter from a car with much higher power (eg 150kW Commodore), usually there is negligible restriction
malcolm ·
depend on engine bay temps pvc can go soft .
barls ·
here are some better pics of the system
malcom ill certainly keep an eye on it deforming but im sure it will be fine.
stacy this one isnt built for performance but to reduce the intake noise at 110km/h so i can hear the stereo on long drives. vwcool there is very little restiction as i have run this filter before in this cars previous incarnation.
Jeremy i might give that a go later when i get a chance
barls ·
i drove this to valla and man was it quiet on the high way. so im guessing the comination of the airbox and the sound deadening worked
