Does anyone feel like their baby just doesn't wanna be on the road? Seems like everything that can go wrong while i'm doing a semi resto, is going wrong! Hence, keeping off the tarmac longer! AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!

Boozer ·

I know exactly how you feel. I had a thread around here somewhere that went into details, but anything that could go wrong did, plus more.

Fossil ·

sometimes yo can't take a trick eh????

theverybigtallman ·

i used to be able to drive mine for 15-20 minutes at a time before it died. always something small but there so much it could be it take you ages to diagnose problems...

oval TOFU ·

yeh - where is that massive post? I red some of it, but I wanna make myself feel better - anyone know what the link is?

baybuscamperkid ·

i dunno, but theres a pretty good post by me a little while back along similar lines. definitely a bit of hitlers revenge in there, but if you tame the beast then it will be good to u, just gota get past the hard part and learn to laugh (laughter helped alot)

kara&herkombi ·

Yeah some days i do think he is haunting me from his grave but ive learnt to just laugh now!! hopefully i can just keep laughing

Oasis ·

Me too. Fix something, and something else breaks or falls off. Last week fix one headlight and the next day the other blows. Tacho dies. Carby manifold comes loose.... Blah blah.. All little things for a 35yo car I suppose.

I want a corolla... Shit, did i say that??

VWFOOL ·

ive always wondered why they get called reliable, hav i just jinxed myself?

robnjo ·

the kool thing is that most thing we can fix when they pop up...but they pop up at the wrong times.
you get there mate😉

kara&herkombi ·

Yeah VWFOOL i always wonder why they get called reliable too!!! Yep think ive jinxed myself too!!

And something always goes wrong at the wrong time... like needing a new head 2 weeks after i just quit my job 😠

oval TOFU ·

Maybe I'm just clumsy or born under the wrond star, but even little things like dropping a nut into the crawl space between the front firewalls, or, just because there's an opening to the heater tubes on my engine, will mean that something else won't drop onto the ample amount of floor I have around me, thats bloody right - it'll drop into that space where I'll have to take apart 3 other things to get to it - stuff that I had just reinstalled! F....

yeh, I don't know where ppl get reliable from - or good fuel efficiency. Equivalent sized engines easily get better fuel ecconomy - but who the hell wants to drive an 82 Pulsar??!

sigh, but I'm nearly finished fixing my oval - only have to install the engine (God I hope it mates to my gearbox properly) and then wire it up (far out, I hope I don't short anything out) and then chuck in the start motor (please please turn over..), bleed my brakes (I wonder if any crap has gotten into the lines?) and I'm sure there's a plethora of other things that are out there to bite me in the arse...

oh how I wish I could laugh all the time...

winerot ·

you pat the dash & say thanks always works for me

oval TOFU ·

heh, I'm temped to punch it instead, but i know it'll cost me in panel beating - then I'll be punching myself!

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

What you all need to do is make them all really fast and then old zig hi man wont be able to catch you well thats my plan he hasn't caght up with me yet nothing wants to die out and about and if it does i can still drive it home classic example is out at baja park got stuck in a major mud hole and filled motor up with sand and muddy water but still drove it the 200km home didn't sound good when i got there and i had used 5-6 liters of oil and gave the guy at the toll both a bad case of smoke in the lungs but i made it yippe it must be scared of a tilt tray

oval TOFU ·

hehe sig heil... that reminds me of Cartman from SouthPark when he dressed up as Der Furehr and kept on popping outhte "heil"s.. heh

mscabrio ·

I had a 68 bug once upon a time that did odd things, ran really well and then broke down on my way to a uni exam or something and then one day when I was driving past someone's house to have a bit of a sticky beak the whole engine let go and dropped a big oil trail, almost like it knew that I was trying to spy !!!!!

Try spraying your cars with a mixture of lemon juice and water, don't know if it works but I read it in a spells book. You have to chat a few things also, but can't remember what they are ???????

[Edited on 13/5/2005 by mscabrio]

oval TOFU ·

lemon juice = acidic=not very good for your car?

scottbugged ·

Took my bug off the road after a rego inspection found out my seats were to loose and wobbled, that was 18 months ago and the car is still sitting in the back yard with motor, seats, carpet, head linning and wirring all removed. Every time if fix 1 problem I find another 1, I come close to not fixing a problem incase I find another setback. :cry

oval TOFU ·

yup.. i know how ya feel...

Boozer ·

here's my wonderful post about my baja.

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

Holly shit its those frigen type 1's i tell ya its good to see that you learn from pain by not putting a jap in

oval TOFU ·

yep, my bug likes to shit me up the wall - the gearbox doesn't seem to shift properly - it's been reco-ed with zero kms done on it... see my post in TechTalk.. aaaaaaaaargh

kara&herkombi ·

Ahhhhh hitler is haunting me again today!!

Backfiring when not accelarating, took her to the mechanic, he had a quick fiddle (was pulling in too much fuel), seemed good, drove home still did it!!!!!!!!!! GRRRRRR i think i did something wrong in a past life!!

Kara

oval TOFU ·

I think I must have been a stooge in the SS in my past life then...

bajachris88 ·

How are the type 4 engines instead? Are they just as bad?

oval TOFU ·

[bitching&moaning]
OMG here's some more of my bitching - or should I shut up coz this happens to more people than I think?

- I installed my 40HP on the weekend and it took me about 4 hours instead of the one hour that I was expecting.. here's the short version of my epic gripe... I had to strip the engine down to the long block - that means, take off the the rear pulley wheel didn't fit) take off the fan shroud (because the generator/pulley wheel was getting in the way), the carby, the exhaust.. still didn't fit, so had to take off the intake manifold too. Still didnt' fit - even with the tilting and nudging. Oh, what's this? the rocker covers are going to bind on the body now, off they come... ooo now is that old black oil all over my chest now?! nice. So now, the engine just barely fits by a bee's d!ck, and then, I've maxed out on the extension on the jack that's under the engine. So, lower the engine back down again (all while the side tinware is rubbing like crazy on the engine bay seal), steady it with bricks, then lower the rear end of the car on the car stands, then shimmy the engine back into the engine bay, just. OK, so I've finally go the four bolts in to hold the engine onto the gearbox. Manifold goes back on, it fits. But surprise surprise, the exhaust won't fit under the rear apron and the outlets aren't low enough to clear the apron either (no exhaust cut outs on 54's ya see..)...

I've removed VW engines twice before, and they never gave me this much trouble. I know oval engine bays are small, but this is a 64mm stroke 1200! Shouldn't they fit easily?

[/bitching&moaning]

I really must have done something really bad in a past life...

aggri1 ·

Jeepers, sounds like some fun people! ;-) I recently found out my splitty has bent parts on the rear end. Like spring plates. I bought it that way, it's my own fault, but my inexperience (better than 'stupidity' hey?) let me down. So I now don't know what to do with it... Gotta see if the torsion bar housing is bent. Might become a paddock bomb (no, not a splitty!). Even the rear door doesn't shut straight!

With regards to the typeIV engine, my bay's one has been a real pain. There's something wrong with the fuel system, no idea what, seems temperature related. Makes her run on two cylinders. Year and a half and still not sure it's fixed (hasn't done it for ages, but it's winter now...). When she's running properly (95% of time) she's great!

You gotta love 'em. I'd never recommend a kombi to someone who'd get all stressed out by little things like the engine stopping while you're driving along. Like whoa, chill out man!

Cheers, Aurel🙂

zjm ·

this all sounds very distressing
I have a big problem with my vw too about every 600 km I have to put about 38 litres of unleaded in it I reckon it should get 900 km to a tank
I now know why you guys dont like us watercooled blokes

anyone for GOLF? hahahahahhahahahahah!:thumb

oval TOFU ·

600km? aaaah I hope I'll be getting that from my 1200 -when it turns over...

I managed to fit the muffler, its just that the exhaust outlets dump straight into the rear valance - any ideas to correct this? Cut and shut the outlets so they exit at an angle?

ColumBUS ·

replaced lower control arm, suspension bushes and tie rod ends... and my headights stop working... go figure

Doug Sweetman ·

I've had my superbug (73) on the road and registered for about 2 and a half years now, and I am still fiddling with the front end trying to fix a recurring shimmy.

The electrical system seems to make its own mind up what it wants to do for me, the headlight adjusters dont work so my lights point straight at the ground......

I went to replace a bearing in the alternator and snapped the cast pulley center...

Its all just part of owning a car this old I guess. At least seeing as I have disc brakes on the front end I am not always getting the drums skimmed because they are out of round !
