I'm going to go overseas next year (when i get my degree) to teach english.. but i cant decide whether to go to japan or south korea.. both have positives and negatives.. so im abit confused to which one i should go to..
so has anybody been to one or both of these countries or worked over there??? and what do you think?
Thanks
Kara

south korea is about to be nuked by the north, and japan is more than likely about to be swallowed up by a tsunami. It's a hard choice.
kara&herkombi ·
😠 Thanks mate!!
killakornkobb ·
my aunty and uncle spent last year over in japan teaching and loved it!
go there🙂

Me
I would love to go to Japan, but Sth Korea is also an interesting place. Depends what you want to try and do. Whats the pay in each like? what are you able to do in your spare (if you have any) time? What or how far does your money avctually go in each place?
I'd probably sway to wards Sth Korea, but thats just me.

Japan Japan Japan... The people are MUCH Friendlier and the food is nicer too...
Their culture is more "Western-ised" than Korea and the Japs just LOVE VW's... Take an old beetle over with you and sell it before you leave... Buy a house back home with the profit you make from the sale...
They pay Big money for good condition old VW's...
kara&herkombi ·
Yeah im kinda swaying towards japan!!
ive got friends over in korea but my mum and dad are moving and i went to their block of land today and it just happened the neighbour came out.. and got onto the topic and he used to own a english school in japan and could possibly set me up with a job...so probably the best option.. plus abit scared about the north korea situation.. thanks for the comments!

Plus they actually EAT Dogs in South Korea.....
So, If You go there... please don't eat any dogs.....
and the Japanese kill whales even though they are protected
and the agreement iwas signed by Australia in 1986, We haven't killed any whales since the whaling station in Western Australia was closed down...... many years ago......
How they could kill a wonderful creature like a whale.....
Now Japan wants to kill HUMPBACK Whales in Antartica waters.... Australian waters.....
Humpback whales are on the endanged species list..******
If Australia can do it.... so can Japan & Norway.....

I think thats the best i have ever seen you post Lee, well said
haha
seriously, well said..
kara&herkombi ·
Trust me.. i wont be eating no dogs!!!!! :puke
Killing whales is soo horrible.. they are beautiful animals!!
i wish we could do something about it..but unfortunately its
hard to change things when you just the little guy at the bottom!!
Che Castro ·
Hehe about eating dogs, we eat beef which would seem horrific to a Hindu.
I liked Japan when I went there, there is a pretty good VW scene there it seems. There are a lot of foreigners teaching english, although watch out that you don't get into a "hostess" job 🙂
Haven't been to S.Korea, although I would like too. Everyone goes to Japan, so be a bit different and go to Korea. If you don't like chilli you might not like a lot of Korean food. They are crazy about chilli!
kara&herkombi ·
i LOVE chilli.. so that would be ok!!

I'm going to teach in Japan once I've got my black belt and have another year and a half of teaching experience. I think I'm going to go to Korea and then China, or the other way around. There are heaps of jobs in China over the next couple of years because of the Olympics.
So I wouldn't limit yourself. Spend six months in one country and then move on.
Just my 2c. :thumb
SKEWtYpe3 ·
i've had/got friends teaching in china, in ex-pat schol$$$
they are loving it, enough spare time to live, untaxed $, supplied with accom in a secure compound and all transport to work etc.......
japan would be an easier place to live longterm i would say

Which art are you getting your shodan in ruckus ? I'm just being nosey as I've started to do karate (GKR) and am loving it (late starter at 25, but its doing good things for my balance and coordination, plus I enjoy the kata and need the exercise, throw in some cultural interest and its all good).
I had the good fortune to go to Japan for a couple of weeks when I was 12 (school exchange). It was fantastic. I'd have to choose Japan for a few reasons, mainly Automotive (love all those crazy jap cars).
Both countries have awesome history about them, and heaps of cultural aspects to get you interested as well.
I'd feel safer in Japan than Sth Korea, and I'd hazard a guess the people probably would be slightly more friendly in Japan too, though thats mostly dependant on how you conduct yourself.
Either or, but like Ruckus said, try and do both if you can !
ruckus ·
Seido Juku Doug. It has its roots in Kyokoshinkai. My girlfriend's mum used to do GKR, seems to be a VERY strong style in Aus.

Doug Sweetman ·
Yeah, GKR was originated in Adelaide in the mid 80's by Kancho Robert Sullivan, and spread from there. Apparently 40,000 members worldwide now, and getting big in the UK too.
I never realised until I started that there was so many different forms ?
Anyways, enough highjacking for me !

Japan is the go - more westernised
Freddie Fender ·
Vietnam is another place to check out too although visas and teaching gigs could be harder to come buy. Drop me a U2U as I have an English professor mate inJapan who could probably through some more light on the teaching aspects over there.
jenz58 ·
Korea would be cool.....have heard only good things about teaching English in Japan....and a friends daughter has taken on her second year in Taiwan....she loves it
If you've got the chance go do it....
Mmmmmnice fresh chilli I'd go...luv it...
I guess if you don't know it's dog then it's not gunna harm you by eating it...yes we see it as cruel but they don't keep dogs as pets normally... they have become a trend amongst the rich maybe.
We grow a bit when we travel...become a little less ignorant maybe when we see how it is in daily life
Why when we talk about another country it comes down to what food??? It must be our survival instincts kicking in.....dare to explore a little it's fun...
OK agree with the whales... big issue
SPRINTSTAR ·
Well said Jen, unfortunately there will always be a few 'Rednecks' out there who still live in the dark ages.
VolksFolks ·
I love dogs, for sure why not eat them, easy to breed, easy too keep, mighty tasty (so i have been told) but not for me!, as for the whaling, another thread has been started so comments will go there.
I adore asian food especially chilli, love the way they cook,
all comments aside, personally i would go with Fossil! Japan
Andy
VolksFolks ·
not with him, but with his comment.. haha

I had a friend that was payed lotsa $ to be a caddy on Japanese golf courses - They payed for her accomodation, taught her japanese and all she had to do was talk to the golfers! Good deal me thinks!!
There is plenty of traps for young punters, so have your back up plans for your own safety. That said there is plenty of reputable businesses that will be able to help. There may be more demand in Korea so more $, but Japan would be my choice!
Im intending on heading over to Japan later this year for about 6 weeks of whale eating, seal beating fun! jk!!
There is so much that i admire about Japanese culture, but so much that disgusts me ethically and environmentally - but look at any country and thats what you get!! Hey look at Australia - We are destroying our environment at an alarming rate, and for no tangible reason...$ is not a reason, particularly when there are sustainable, alternatives
...There has to be a middle ground there somewhere...
