where can i get an independant valuation done? at the moment my lovely bus is only insured for $1800 and i want to bump it upto atleast $3000 if only so as it isnt marked as a write off as soon as anything happens.

If you insure with Shannon's or Vigil they will do a valuation for you. The only other way would be to contact an independant automotive assessor. There are heaps that should be listed in the Yellow pages under Loss Assessors.

Oh also the possession of a valuation does not always mean that is what your vehicle is insured for. If it is current market value on your policy, then that is what they will pay out.

To get the car to the point in value where it won't be 'written off' you will have to have it insured for 8-10K due to labour costs etc these days. Better to get a classic policy that allows you to keep the 'wreck' if it is damaged. Keep in mind, one dented door and busted headlight might be $1000 for labour, paint etc etcat today's rates.

VWCOOL is correct, the only way to make sure you keep it is to have that stated in the policy, dont just take the insurance company/broker's word for it.
If you insure it for $3000, that would mean if you have a dent in the door and they need to replace the door, they would more than likely write it off, You might be able to get a door for $100 but the crash repair will charge about $800 and then paint and then labour,
With classics like VW's you are absolutley out of your mind if you dont have agreed value and retention rights.
Just my rant.

i agree on this one cause when i wrought off chaos i got the $7000 payout and kept the wreck which i pulled about $5000 worth of stuff out of so its worth it

mine is insured with shannons - get get the "valuation" to get agreed value i just emailed pictures to the "consultant"- all four angles and a couple of the inside

Shannons are the way to go, we have had about 8 vw & other cars over the last few years insured through them for full comprehensive and they never question the amount that we put on it to insure eg twin cab 78' for $7,500 they are always very helpful.

well unlike shannons GIO has agreed to insure me for a very reasonable price with all my modifications and my age, and they have told me that if i get one of these valuaions then submit it then my policy will be changed to suit this. will definitely find out if i have salvage rights (forgot to do this)
