When were semaphores discontinued? The page linked below states 1955 AND 1962 - it can't be both! My 1959 beetle doesn't have indicators on the fenders, and does have non-semaphore indicators on the B pillars that flash. Are these non-semaphore ones later replacements of original semaphores?

1959 was the last year for semaphores

The change that they're talking about in 1955 was US only from what I can tell, where they went to the bullet style indicators, as it says low on the front fenders. 59 sounds right for semaphores, ive seen 58's with em.
Here's the US bullet front indicators, like the stance on this one BTW

it was november 1960 on Aussie bugs. Same time they changed from the hump tank to the flat style, as well as changing from the black screwtop fuse boxes to the later 8 fuse ones on the underside of the dash. The euro '60s had semaphores too

Thanks guys!

Definately late 60. The flashing lights on the B pillars are replacements to fill the gaps, apparently fitted from Europe. I had someone of the forum tell me this last year when I was asking the same.

I have to find some of these lights ('Elephant Ears') for my 60 when I start working on it in the next few months.....

You can have the 'Elephant Ears' off my '59 as soon as you give me a pair of semaphores :thumb
